He has a good heart. He treats people like they matter. That is one of the reason why I respect and like this President. Talk about POTUS looks, is fine, talk about how nice he looks, is fine, but this is a man who has a heart, who does his best to treat people like they count, they matter. And it’s real, nothing phony like Mitt.

Well said, Anniebella! President Obama treats people with respect and compassion. Even little children instinctively know that he cares. That is why they are always joyous when he holds them. On top o that, he seems to be genuinely at ease in his interaction with people from all walks of life.

I feel like “Oh. My. God. Chandler Bing.” Seriously. As soon as I realized what PBO said I had that Janice moment:

Speaking of comparison, the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw today’s kiss to the well-wisher was that I couldn’t remember Bush kissing, or being kissed, by a citizen. I’m not saying it didn’t happen, only that it occurred to me that i don’t remember an instance.

Sen. Grassley: GOP Will Not Filibuster VAWA

The GOP has come up with their own version of the bill, which strips the added protections for Native American, LGBT, and undocumented victims of domestic violence. But with 61 cosponsors in the Senate, the bill with all of its provisions will likely pass.

      April 18, 2012 at 7:20 pm

Why are democrats in the senate signing onto this crap??? they should force the issue out in the open so that people can see the manipulation that is going on

I so wish PBO will veto this bill and ask the Senate to send him a “clean Violence Against Women Acts” bill.

      • 51 japa21
        April 18, 2012 at 7:33 pm

The original bill, not Grassley’s stripped down one is the one that will pass. The Reps have discovered they don’t dare filibuster it because they already have bad press. Grassley is just trying to appease his homophobic, native american, immigrant hating base.

There was a presentation on The Importance of the Violence Against Women Act at the White House today. It was powerful and very moving. Vice President Joe Biden who was the original drafter of the bill asked a very simple and poignant question: Exactly what are we arguing about here? After 17 years of helping victims of violence why would there be any question about re-authorization?.

The reason why Senator Grassley and his colleagues are having a cow is that they have been exposed big time. The GOP war on women is real. Add yet another item to the list. Everything was fine as long as no one knew about their objections to a bill that should have been a no brainer. It’s just remarkable that the addition of LGBT, Native Americans and immigrants “victims” was so offensive to the GOP. Now they are saying the Democrats are playing politics. How is it possible to be this morally bankrupt?

Sorry if this has already been posted. From TPM:

Just in, this statement Assistant Director Paul S. Morrissey of the U.S. Secret Service’s Office of Government and Public Affairs on the prostitution scandal rocking the agency:

“Although the Secret Service’s investigation into allegations of misconduct by its employees in Cartagena, Colombia, is in its early stages, and is still ongoing, three of the individuals involved will separate or are in the process of separating from the agency:

    – One supervisory employee was allowed to retire from the agency.

    – Another supervisory employee has been proposed for removal for cause, which requires a 30-day notice, an opportunity to respond and the right to be represented by private legal counsel.

    – A third non-supervisory employee has resigned.

The remaining eight employees continue to be on administrative leave. Their security clearances remain suspended.

The Secret Service continues to conduct a full, thorough and fair investigation, utilizing all investigative techniques available to our agency. This includes polygraph examinations, interviews with the employees involved, and witness interviews, to include interviews being conducted by our Office of Professional Responsibility in Cartagena, Colombia.

Since these allegations were first reported, the Secret Service has actively pursued this investigation, and has acted to ensure that appropriate disciplinary action is effected. We demand that all of our employees adhere to the highest professional and ethical standards and are committed to a full review of this matter.

I am wondering what it will take for the MSM to call Mitt on his constant lying. His lies are easy to debunk, but our MSM refuses to call a lie a lie (at least when the liar is from the GOP). I think our best hope may be our comedians. They are usually most effective in finding the tragic flaw of a presidential candidate and crystalizing it in a way that sticks to the target and shapes public perception. Be it Letterman, Leno, Kimmel or SNL I hope they will find a way to expose Mitt as the pathological liar that he truly is. Jon Lovitz can make a comeback playing his pathological liar character (that’s the ticket).

    • 62 globalcitizenlinda
      April 18, 2012 at 7:30 pm

I am afraid that the MSM will not call out mitt the entitled liar. it will be up to us ordinary people using the internet and person-to-person communication.

the media are mainly 1 percenters; the MSM also needs a tight race in order to make loads of money from the opposing candidates

Chipsticks, thanks for sharing VP Biden’s speech on re-authorizing the Violence Against Women Act. VP Biden is the real deal. How in the world do Republicans with daughters, who oppose this bill, sleep at night?

By the way, WHO is Brian Darling? 😦 😦 Given the fact that my offspring has completed this year’s college courses, he is home tormenting my ears with political nattering, which interests him for some weird reason. Anyway, there was this Republican shill, name of Brian Darling, speaking in support of Nugent and the fact that he never said anything wrong; that he was speaking to NRA folk and his comment about chopping heads off was in the context of the election, yada yada. Darling also thought ‘Obama’ was ‘weak’ because he couldn’t act decisively re the Secret Service only saying he ‘will be angry’ IF it turns out they acted inappropriately in Cartegean. Romney, of course, would have beheaded them all right away (my take on his comments). Naturally i was going bananas cause offspring wouldn’t turn it off, and I was listening to him practise for a banquet appearance this weekend. [Secretly I think he was trying to get me out of the room because he didn’t really want to practice the pieces I wanted to hear. Since he’ll be playing for people primarily in my age group I was trying to influence his selectios. (He’s one of those ‘snobby’ classical types)] Anyway, Brian Darling was an idiot whom i’d never encountered before.

    • April 18, 2012 at 8:02 pm

Never heard of Mr. Darling. Sounds like he’s angling to be Mitt’s mouthpiece.

That’s just it, GoB, I’d never heard the name before, yet he sounded very conversant with the GOP talking points drivel. There was a Dem counter puncher whose name I didn’t catch, as I was hyperventilating that this other idiot was polluting our foreign airwaves.

lol…I was talking with a co-worker about cable news today. Haven’t watched it in 3 years because I would react the same way you did. Now I just read and watch clips. Feel much better.

Yes, I’ve found that once you have a clearer picture of the issues, the players and their (lack of) character it’s really hard to listen to misguided/misinformed people singing the praises of, or excusing, republican ‘evil’. It’s even harder to listen to those who pretend to have insight denigrating this President. There is only one person who turns on Cable news in this house, and it isn’t me. Wonder if he’s going to get a summer position out of town? Please, Lord? 😆

Whaddya know, Americans believe in global warming.

A new poll released Wednesday shows a majority of Americans “believe that global warming made several high profile extreme weather events worse.”

The study is titled: “Extreme Weather, Climate & Preparedness in the American Mind” and it was conducted by the Yale Project on Climate Change Communication and the George Mason University Center for Climate Change Communication.

Ford is in the process of making big changes to its overall strategy, and its first all-electric car, the Focus Electric, helps show how the company is evolving.

The company’s new direction offers “the power of choice” to consumers by producing gas-only, electric-only, and hybrid models of all of its cars and trucks, with the first all-electric model coming from the popular Focus line.

This strategy closely mirrors what Samsung is doing with its mobile devices: If you have the ability to make every possible combination, you theoretically create the best chance of connecting with consumers of all tastes.

Today, I was able to the test drive the Focus Electric at a Ford event in New York, where I live. (Don’t tell Ford, but this was the first time I’ve ever driven in Manhattan!) I don’t have a car in New York, but as a son of the Midwest, I know how important cars and trucks are to the vast majority of U.S. consumers.

    It sounds good!

    From Political Wire (h/t Donna)

A new Democracy Corps survey in the 56 most-competitive Republican held congressional districts finds President Obama now edging Mitt Romney, 48% to 47%. In December, Obama trailed by seven points.

Key finding: “Democrats are winning the image battle, up and down the ticket. While half of the voters in these districts register cool feelings toward the Republican Party and Republican Congress, the Democratic Party has enjoyed an 8-point bump in favorability since September 2011, and Democrats in Congress have seen a 7-point rise.”

Also interesting: “The Ryan budget is in trouble. Just 41% support it in these Republican districts with no description other than the fact that it cuts spending. When described, including using Ryan’s own language, support collapses to 34%.”

    The survey is here: http://www.democracycorps.com/strategy/2012/04/democrats-gaining-in-battleground-and-ryan-budget-could-finish-the-job/

BRUSSELS — Senior Obama administration officials, faced with stepped-up enemy attacks in Kabul and war weariness at home, pledged a long-term commitment to Afghanistan on Wednesday and said their strategy to end the U.S. combat role by the end of 2014 remains on track.

Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton took part Wednesday in the last high-level meeting of the NATO allies before a key summit next month in Chicago that administration officials hope will finalize the U.S. and NATO’s relationship with Afghanistan after 2014. A critical part of that partnership is a commitment by Washington and its allies to fund the cash-strapped Afghan government’s security forces.

The United States and its allies have generally agreed to spend about $4.1 billion a year on Afghan army and police forces after the end of combat operations in late 2014.

“History proves that insurgencies are best and ultimately defeated not by foreign troops but by indigenous forces,” Panetta told reporters. “When the Afghans do their job, we are doing our job. When the Afghans win, we win.”
