By John W. Schoen, Senior Producer

The recent run-up in oil and gasoline prices may have run its course – for now.

Thanks to easing demand from a slowing global economy and increased production from Saudi Arabia, the oil market is coming off a two-year cycle of tightening supply, according to the International Energy Agency. That’s helped snap a 13 percent surge in oil prices since the start of the year.

Much of that run-up was fueled by fears of a cutoff in supplies from Iran, which is the target of U.S. and European sanctions aimed at curbing its nuclear weapons program. Those sanctions have been applied in stages since the start of the year.

But traders may have overreacted to the potential impact of those sanctions, according to Julian Jessop, chief global economist at Capital Economics.

Mitt Romney is using a nice trick of waiting until October to release his 2011 returns – building some some kind of expectation that we will find something bad in them, knowing fully well that there’s nothing to see in his 2011 return. What we would like to see are his returns from 2000-2007, before he was aware that his tax returns would come under scrutiny.

There had to be a reason that the McCain camp switched from Romney to Palin AFTER they reviewed his tax returns…something wasn’t right, and that’s why we aren’t interested in his 2010 and 2011 returns because he already knew he was running for President when he filed those.

I’m looking for our Columbian Obot—–hope he’s there.
2 other quick notes—-Brian Williams, when talking about Obama’s tax return, noted that Sasha’s real name is Natasha, which I’m sure most of you already knew, but just in case…..
And Ellen was doing a little tease about Michelle Obama appearing on her show on Mon.—–not sure if it’s by satellite or what—–but they were trading funny jokes back and forth. They were talking about Michelle’s last appearance there when they were having a push-up contest, and Michelle said she could have done a lot more but she didn’t want to make Ellen feel bad. And Ellen was showing old photos of Michelle teasing her about being in a chair at Pier 1 etc. Funnier in person than in my sad retelling, but tune in.

Romney has a nerve challenging Pres Obama’s gun rights record, when Romney’s the one who actually passed anti-gun legislation AFTER pledging his allegiance to the NRA and touting his ability to kill “varmints”. (Who uses the word “varmints”?)

I’ve never understood the fascination with Steven Colbert. He has never once made me laugh. Chipsticks on the other hand is a genius and keeps me smiling and laughing with her razor sharp wit on a regular basis.

          • April 13, 2012 at 7:47 pm

I love Colbert and think both he and Chips are deliciously clever.

            • April 13, 2012 at 7:54 pm

Well, Dotster and Tien Le, you’re both very kind, but I honestly don’t think there’s a funnier person on planet earth than Colbert, he actually leaves me weeping. It’s weird though, Tien, some people others find hilarious I don’t find funny at all. Aren’t we a strange breed?!

I agree totally, Tien. On the occasions I’ve watched a Colbert segment I get his point but I don’t usually laugh out loud. CC on the other hand actually makes me laugh out loud very, very often, to the point where my offspring comes over to see what’s so funny ‘on the blogs’. Truth is, hanging around Chips Chica, TODville and the President as he speaks and travels I have ‘the best medicine’ daily, and often in large doses! No wonder I feel in such terrific health most of the time! 😆 😆 😆

I wish I could transfer the skepticism in offspring’s voice when he asks too, CC! It’s like, there goes my crazy mother cracking up with her ‘blogs’ AGAIN! I mean, what do they know about humour? He manages to concede on occasion that the joke was funny, but not always. Sometimes he just rolls his eyes. Other times he condescendingly asks, so what’s on the blogs today? Ah me, the confidence of the young that they alone have the answers.

[Not sure I want to be known as a cracker-upper, 😉 though I ave been told that I have a weird sense of humour on occasion. ]

Florida’s gov, Rick Scott, was also dressed casually when he greeted the President during a stop on the way to Colombia. Unbelievable. I’m sending an inquiry to the State Dept.

Blogger was really great until Google bought them. {{{{{ARGHHHHHH}}}}})

I see PBO has arrived safe and sound, which is always a HUGE relief. I hope he’s enjoying himself and that we get to see him working over the next couple of days. I just looked up the time difference for Cartagena and I’m surprised to learn that they are in standard UTC/GMT. Woot!!

60% as an average in Gallup. There was an earlier poll (not Gallup) that was 67% I believe. The make – up of the sample is a favorite Gallup trick. The numbers that matter : 74% Dem 63% indie. Ive decided to call the indies “swing voters”. They aren’t independent they’re persuadable and I figure a good 10, 15% of the electorate. These are the people Romney lies to.

It is pathetic that Michele Bachmann now has a national platform and is asked for her opinion.

Harold Ford, Jr. now is an executive with Morgan Stanley which is never mentioned. He rants about the necessity of the oil industry keeping their tax benefits, but is presented as being a Democratic spokesperson.

Hmmmmmm! I’m feeling so good!!! I went to the grocery store a while ago and broke my number one rule. I bought ice cream. I’ve been having cravings for my favorite flavor: coffee!!!. What’s funny is I’m not so big on drinking coffee but i loooooooove coffee flavored ice cream!!! I’m gonna feel so guilty after eating this serving though. That’s what’s so horrible about ice cream. The guilt immediately afterwards. 😦 Oh well. I’ll cross that bridge when I get there. 😉

Lisa, skip the guilt, enjoy the coffee ice cream. On the rare occasion that I have it, coffee ice cream is my flavor of choice. Now if I’m only having ice cream (as opposed to having it for dessert after a meal) I’ll go with butter pecan. Yummy!!

I used to work in an old-fashioned ice-cream parlor. I can make a DANGEROUS banana split!!!! Whhheeeeeewwwww, baby!!

never had a banana split. I always thought it looked too decadent and too much. I’m a very conservative girl when it comes to most things. Plain coffee ice cream is it for me. When my friends and I go to Dairy Queen, of all the different flavors, I get vanilla all the time, once in a blue moon I’ll try the cookie and cream but I never finish it because it’s way too sweet. I don’t even like chocolate ice cream. Only vanilla or coffee. 😉

They’re more formal than they look. They are badly wrinkled in the heat. These shirts are commonly worn in South and Central America. Generally, they’re well-made with tucks, tiny pleats, embroidery, etc. We’ve been at many formal functions in nearby countries (have never been to Colombia) where they are commonly worn. It’s only ten degrees north of the equator and is HOT!! I absolutely wilt in the heat of Ecuaddor, Panama, etc. I’ve been near men wearing suits in similar latitudes — and honestly, they often stink! It’s not that they’re not clean. It is that the heat and sweat can be oppressive.

Misconduct alleged against Secret Service agents

    Associated Press

CARTAGENA, Colombia (AP) — A dozen Secret Service agents with President Barack Obama at an international summit have been relieved of duty because of allegations of misconduct.

The Associated Press received an anonymous tip that the misconduct involved prostitutes in Cartagena, Colombia, the site of the Summit of the Americas. A Secret Service spokesman would neither confirm nor deny the allegation.

A U.S. official, who was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter and requested anonymity, put the number of agents at 12. The agency was not releasing the number of personnel involved.

The incident threatened to overshadow Obama’s economic and trade agenda at the summit and embarrass the U.S. The White House had no comment.

Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan would not confirm that prostitution was involved, saying only that there had been “allegations of misconduct” made against Secret Service personnel in the Colombian port city hosting Obama and more than 30 world leaders.

Donovan said the allegations of misconduct were related to activity before the president’s arrival Friday night.

The American Nazi Party traces its ideology to George Lincoln Rockwell, who founded a post-war National Socialist white supremacist movement in the US.

The group reportedly holds meetings in South Carolina and lists a postal address via a post office box in Michigan.

The reminder of 20th Century ideology comes at the end of a week in which Florida Congressman Allen West said publicly that as many as 81 members of Congress are active members of the Communist Party.

I know she is smart enough to figure that out for herself, but I’m glad I wrote her giving her support for what is right. I firmly believe that if we write and make our voices heard, it will make a difference. Where Rachel leads, others will follow. But, I have to say, I had switched her off again last week, and caught the tail end of one of her shows where the Republicans had attacked her on her investigations into Wisconsin. At the end of her show, she looked into the camera and told the right wingers that their meanness only makes her stronger. I decided to give her another chance, and just fast forward when she starts her nonsense. I think several parts of her show today were excellent.

Actually the president is an amazingly fortunate man who has overcome enormous barriers to become the most powerful leader in the world. In every international trip he takes he is greeted with love by the people and treated with great respect by other world leaders. He also accomplishes exactly what he sets out to do. Presidential international trips are the most complex organizational and logistical projects to carry out, requiring a huge support team. Good advance planning makes the difference between a smooth meeting and one filled with logistical missteps. The number of things that have to be planned out are mind-boggling. The fact that a SS security team misbehaved while “off the job,” is unfortunate for the SS and its reputation, but it is no reflection on the president who always presents himself with dignity and class. The SS in DC acted swiftly and appropriately and there is really nothing more to be said. PBO cannot personally supervise every human in the federal government anymore than a four-star general directly oversees an Army private. So if the press wants to go gaga over every little thing that anyone remotely connected to the president sees and does, let them. Too much of this nonsense and most people just tune out of the faux outrage of the day. Life has too many real problems to spend time on this level of media idiocy.

      • April 14, 2012 at 8:01 am

I agree with you that thus President handles everything nicely. That Is not my point.
My point is, the media has a blackout until something frivolous happens.
I appreciate the civil discourse, some people upthread, launch personal attacks instead of talking to me and trying to refute what I say.
Thus, a discussion on why the media only focuses on the Presidents trips after something, well, not good happens.
I remember one trip, Chuck Todd was all the way over in Austrailia, and he only talked about Herman Cain and Donald Trump.
Not a mention of the President, once.
These are facts, I am not making it up!!!

          April 14, 2012 at 8:28 am

Then your comments ought to be about the media, which have nothing to do with the President’s luck. Many of us have made the same observation about the media’s blackouts of the President’s overseas trips. I personally have posted several comments to that effect on this very blog. Yet we’ve not ascribed it to the President’s “bad luck” because it has nothing to do with his luck or lack thereof. It’s all about the MSM’s poor decorum and it reflects poorly on the MSM and the MSM ONLY.

          • April 14, 2012 at 8:44 am

Ok! Fair enough. It’s not how I see it. The media is to blame, now time for some good luck, like say, no Israel bombing of Iran would be good luck, no euro debt disaster, would be good luck etc!

phoenixriz…twelve Secret Service agents were taken back to the U.S. from Colombia for allegedly consorting with prostitutes. They were part of the forward detail and taken out before the President landed. A new detail was sent. I just commented that I’ve read, and known agents, and those that serve the president (whoever it is) do tend to get arrogant and feel above the law. These are rotated rather frequently now. The work is stressful and often almost 24/7. The Secret Service acted quickly and correctly and got what I would call rogue agents out of the way.

Okay so my last link went over like a lead balloon apparently. Maybe this one will do better. It’s an excellent article – not funny this time – about the way the far left depress the vote, and what we can do in the election to counter it.

“We Have Met The Enemy, Libs, And He Is (Too Often) Us”
If you want to know why the progressive movement keeps spinning its wheels, and why the right wing minority keeps on making policies and having their way, the answer is really simple, and it’s right in front of your face every single day.

It’s called winning elections. At the very least, it’s making sure the worst people don’t win elections.”

Please take good care. We had over 700 lightening strikes here last night and it was quite the show. Very powerful and intense.

This article is over a year old, but it points to the similarity between Canada’s Stephen Harper and the Repubs, and the disimilarity between the two countries’ media.

This never gets old. Can you just imagine how out of control Harper would be if he had won that battle to allow lying on Canadian broadcasting? He’s already got enough hubris to attempt to dismantle the Canadian health care system – who does that!?! I loved this question in the article, which received several of the very examples that the deluded commenter so arrogantly demanded:

“Just once I wish someone would actually come up with an example of one of these lies that liberals are so quick to claim Fox spews out of their broadcasts. If you cannot come up with at least one verified example of a lie that was from Fox news and not one of their opinion contributors, which all of the news orgs have, even the holy of holies, the NY Times, then maybe it is time for all of you to stop lying about Fox lying.”

Here’s a funny clip from today’s Ellen show. While FLOTUS was in Jacksonville, FL today, they cut live to Ellen’s show to recognize a large group of girls of the military at the naval base:

Congrats on the great news CollegeKay. I don’t think anyone here doubted that you would win.

I think it was a very sweet gesture that lady did in painting that picture for PBO. As someone who can’t do anything close, I can just imagine the pride she felt as she spent days working on this, probably hurrying to finish in time for his visit, only to be turned away. How sad.

I gasped for her when I saw it had fallen.

Her dreams were dashed and to have it fall because of the search was just adding insult to injury in my opinion. I hope it find it’s way to the intended recipient.

I agree. She should be allowed to meet the prez.

Looking more closely at the PBO painting, the upper left corner, there is a faint face painted. Can’t tell if it”s of Jesus or his mom. It’s definately there watching over him. Check it out.

That lady really put herself into that for him. She must love him as much as we do.

Yes, now I feel terrible for my initial comments and wish I could take them back, but I honestly wasn’t aware of what the good lady was trying to portray 😦

I’m not aware of what you said. Last few days I’ve only been skimming through late at night with an occassional quick peek from work when I can. Last night I was finally able to spend time on twitter again trying to retweet links from here. So I must have missed it. Certainly did not mean to make anyone feel terrible.

I was just struck by the gestures which people just want to extend him for the way he touches all our lives.

          Have a great day.

            Don’t worry – It’s not you LunarSea 🙂

Last night I made a “WTF??!” comment to the effect that I didn’t understand why the President was crying in pic. I thought at first it was some kind of protest painting. But other people corrected me by pointing out that the painting was meant to convey PBO the night his Grandmother died. So I realized that’s what it was and felt bad that I had jumped to conclusions initially! That’s all – I’m fine now actually. I hope the woman gets to meet our President or at least have the painting delivered to him, so she knows her efforts were not in vain.

As for the SS forward detail. Compost happens. It’s not like PBO wined and dined his donors at a bondage club with campaign cash. If the media wants to keep harping on this we just need to remind them…loudly.

It would be nice if they started talking about these issues, instead of focusing on trivial nonsense about the President.
Plouffe was just on the Bloomberg Channel, I suggest you watch that interview, he is awesome with messaging, he has the facts down pat.

  84. April 14, 2012 at 8:12 am

David Plouffe was awesome on Bloomberg just now, and Julianna Smoot asked real questions.
    Good interview!

PBO debunks Romney lies in Telemundo Interview

According to Reuters, when the president was asked by Telemundo about Romney’s claim that 92% of the people who lost their jobs in this recession were women, he said, “Everybody who’s looked at this claim knows it’s bogus. What he doesn’t mention obviously is that all these job losses, both men and women, took place as a consequence of the worst financial crisis and the worst economic crisis that we’ve seen since the Great Depression,” he continued. “They’re a direct result of the policies he wants to go back to, and I think the American people understand that.”

Ed played a small clip last night on his show. I hope Chips will be able to find a segment from that interview to post for us!

    • April 14, 2012 at 8:31 am

And these are facts. That is another good response by the President.
Bet it gets ignored by CNN and the like.

They can ignore it all they want – it’s on record and there are numerous ways of bypassing CNN etc to disseminate the information. This is the age of Youtube and Twitter, and as the WaPo noted, these alternative media are “hurting Romney.” I believe they “hurt Romney” because they allow the truth to be disseminated unfiltered by the corporate talking heads who will spin everything pro GOP.
