EJ Dionne: Conservatives are not accustomed to being on the defensive. They have long experience with attacking the evils of the left and the abuses of activist judges. They love to assail “tax-and-spend liberals” without ever discussing who should be taxed or what government money is actually spent on. They expect their progressive opponents to be wimpy and apologetic.
So imagine the shock when President Obama decided last week to speak plainly about what a Supreme Court decision throwing out the health-care law would mean, and then landed straight shots against the Mitt Romney-supported Paul Ryan budget as “a Trojan horse,” “an attempt to impose a radical vision on our country,” and “thinly veiled social Darwinism.”
….. Romney pronounced himself appalled …. yet could neither defend the cuts nor deny the president’s list of particulars, based as they were on reasonable assumptions. When it came to the Ryan budget, Romney wanted to fuzz things up. But, as Obama likes to point out, math is math.
And when Obama went after the right’s willingness to use the power of the Supreme Court for ideological purposes, conservatives were aghast – and never mind that conservatives have been castigating activist judges since at least the 1968 presidential campaign….

Paul Krugman: Oh, boy. It turns out that the WaPo featured on its front page a report by Charles Blahous of the (yes, Koch-funded) Mercatus Center – although the Post describes him as a Medicare trustee, giving the impression that this is somehow an official document – claiming that the Affordable Care Act will actually increase the deficit. Jonathan Chait does the honors…..
….. this is basically a sick joke that doesn’t pass the laugh test. Unfortunately, it seems that some news organizations don’t have mandatory laugh-testing.
More here
Steve Benen: ….. The problem, which the Post article didn’t mention, is that Blahous’ research falls apart under scrutiny. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities’ Paul N. Van de Water easily dismissed the Republican’s report.
…. I can appreciate the fact that these budget figures can seem complex, but certainly a guy who worked on entitlement policy for Bush/Cheney should understand the basics here, and the basics tell us that Obama’s health care law helps lower the national debt. Whether the right finds this inconvenient or not is irrelevant.

ET can exclusively reveal that George Clooney is hosting a fundraiser for President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign – but there’s one thing he won’t do to help the president.
Clooney tells ET, “I’m proud to do whatever I can to support the President… as long as no one asks me to sing.”
… Clooney will host the president and about 150 supporters at the event on May 10 at his home in Los Angeles, California …. tickets will run $40,000 each, with proceeds going to the Obama Victory fund, a joint fundraising committee of Obama for America, the Democratic National Committee and several state Democratic parties.

Morning Japa, is your heart beating a little faster?!
holy smokes, she’s so gorgeous
Isn’t she?! Morning Pugeretto!
Wow. The two pictures are from a Vogue shoot in 2009? Wow. Just wow. She and PBO could both have successful careers in the modeling industry. Their faces, lines, forms, profiles, the way clothes fit on them, their bone structure……wow. Just wow.
Good Morning Chips. 🙂
One of my all-time favorite photos of FLOTUS.
Congrats japa!!! Happy Wednesday to you!
1st! Good morning.
morning
ha ha ha 3 posts with same timeline!
Right can we say three way tie!
Spooky!!! It looks like the WordPress judges awarded Japa gold – if I was you or Proud Former WH Intern I’d go to court on this one.
Good morning to every one!!
Congrats Japa!
Man I would love to start every day looking at POTUS and George Clooney.
Good morning. Look at those two gorgeous older men. I’m grateful to Mr. Clooney for his unwavering support of this President.
“older men” – you are so sweet!
To me they are young punks.
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
😀 😀 😀
ck, I finally figured out who your dead-ringer is – Kyla Pratt (of Dr Dolittle flicks fame).
People tell me that all time lol
It’s been bothering me for the past two days trying to recall her name and in which movie I had seen her.
you are so spot on amk.
Oh, CK, it made me laugh when you said older men. They are both so young–they can still drive at night, hear out of both ears and probably have very few back and hip pains. Be still my heart. I once talked to a woman in her early 80’s who was “dating” a man in his late 70’s whom none of her friends liked. Her reason? He could drive at night. Once you’ve found someone like that, never let them go.
Aw that is sweet. Love has no age limit…:-)
thats so cute jackie… my grandfather (passed away now) remarried at the ‘young’ age of 89… she was 85.
I love that : “older men” ~ for me.. they’re eggzackly the right age.. finally hot men at 50.. yes yes yes 🙂
8.2 earthquake in Indonesia, posible tsunami!
I hope all those people are Warned!
Good morning all.
My long week-end ends today and I am back at work tomorrow – so what to do today….. I will think of something (lol)
Morning everyone, have a good one, enjoyed these wonderful pictures today/Axelrod-dog-on-Mitt’s-car video.

As American troops prepare to leave Afghanistan in the next two years, leaders from both countries are laying the foundation for continued cooperation once U.S. forces depart.
“There’s no doubt we are in a critical juncture” in Afghanistan, Defense Minister Abdul Wardak said on Tuesday. “But after years of struggle, tomorrow’s goal is in sight.”
Wardak and Afghan Interior Minister Bismillah Mohammadi met with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, at the Pentagon Tuesday to discuss the way ahead for U.S.-Afghan relations.
The meeting was the third one for the U.S.-Afghanistan Security Consultations Forum. But it was the first forum meeting with Panetta as DOD chief.

The Bogus Obamacare-Deficit Study
By Jonathan Chait
————————————————–
Indeed, the whole argument is so bizarrely weak you have to wonder, “What is this doing on the front page of the Washington Post?” Here is what I think is going on. The author of the Post story, Lori Montgomery, is the author of a recent debt-negotiation narrative that seems to have been spoon-fed to her by John Boehner. Montgomery inserts a few cautionary notes into the story, but basically frames it the way Blahous would like.
Blahous is the Republican trustee for Medicare, so that title offers the hook for a paper he writes that, by adopting some mighty odd hypothetical scenarios, says that Obamacare will boost the deficit. Blahous’s government position gives the claim enough juice that it can be pitched as a “study” by a government official, as opposed to just another Republican-authored polemic, which would never receive such prominent or relatively credulous coverage. The next step is for conservatives to adopt Blahous’s figure as the “true” figure — but of course never to apply his strange assumptions to the GOP budget or to any other proposal — and browbeat the media into citing that alongside the CBO figure, for “balance.”

http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2012/04/bogus-obamacare-deficit-study.html
yup.
The fucking media will parrot these lies as factual counterpoints.
Amk, seriously, did you feel the aftershock of the earthquake??
Yes. It lasted for about 10 minutes intermittently. Wifey was out with her mil to go a newly opened state library. They were returning home and saw many people running away from tall-rise office buildings. I was with daughter and son at home. Daughter freaked out and made us get out of the house. Son was joking about it. No great shakes. 🙂
Oh bloooooooooody hell. I would have been embarrassingly hysterical, or frozen with fear – not sure which. Is your son’s most loved tune ‘Always look on the bright side of life’ by any chance?
“No great shakes” 😆
Yeah, he is the clown in the family while the daughter is the worrywart. Guess which one takes after the wifey. 🙂
Hmmm…… that’s a toughie amk, give us a hint? 🙂
I’m glad you and your family are ok amk.
Thank you donna. BBC says no immediate reports of damage or casualties in Aceh,Indonesia. Hope it stays that way.
OMG, that was a HUGE quake. Terrifying. Glad to hear you and your family are safe.

All sorts of Hearing in GSA employees. This is all inside the Beltway chatter, nobody even knows what GSA means.
Does, the Republicans Really want to get rid of GSA, who takes cate of the Government Books?
The Democrats should call their bluff and say ok let’s repeal the GSA and save money.

Love that other boy’s (in blue & white tees) envious look thinking wish my dad had done that.
Intriguing, balanced photo—-beautiful face on the girl on the rt. (gray stripe) who is intent on beautiful President Obama who is intent on his high five with the little kid who is intent on connecting with President Obama.
The May NATO summit in Chicago is bringing delegations from some 40 countries–leaders from NATO countries and nations who are contributing troops to the Afghanistan conflict–a major topic of discussion at the summit. Presidents or Prime Ministers, Defense Secretaries and Secretaries of State or Foreign Ministers will be feted at a series of dinners on May 20.
Last month, the White House announced President Obama will host what is being billed as a “working dinner” with the NATO heads of state on May 20 at Soldier Field, not far from the McCormick Place complex which is the headquarters for the the summit.
First Lady Michelle Obama will also be throwing a spouse dinner that night–with one possible location the Symphony Center complex associated with the Chicago Symphony.
The Sun-Times has learned exclusive details about more NATO Chicago entertaining the NATO Chicago Host Committee is organizing:
*Also on May 20, a dinner will be held at the Field Museum for the national leaders whose troops are part of the NATO force in Afghanistan–but whose countries are not members of NATO. This group is known as ISAF–International Security Assistance Force.

No doubt he’ll try Jovie, great patriot that he is 🙄
CHART: THE BUFFET RULE AND TAX FAIRNESS
————————————————————————–
The Buffett Rule Asks the Wealthiest to Pay Their Fair Share
Nearly one-quarter of all millionaires (about 55,000 individuals) pay a lower tax rate than millions of middle-class families. Warren Buffett has famously said that he pays a lower tax rate than his secretary, and he agrees that isn’t fair. To reform our tax system, which is currently tilted in favor of very high-income households, President Obama has proposed a basic principle of tax fairness called the Buffett Rule.

Tune in, show support, see how we fare against all their Rovian bullshit Politics.
That is all!
Yes, will watch. Thanks Jovie!
Love this:
Excellent. The O-team is not playing. They will not allow Etch a Sketch to slide to the center as the GOP is hoping.
Good morning Chips, I like this video also, It’s a summary of exactly, who Mitt Rob Me Is
Gooood Morning Chipsssssssss…Gooood Morningggggggg…TOD FAM….
what an awesome video….says it all..tweeted and posted this on fb…
i think we will all have to remind folks about this as Romney begins his desperate move back to the middle….
but i say to my neighbors and friends and co-workers….look at what happens when the Repubs are in control like they are here in PA….and all over the country….attacks on women…attacks on civil rights….attacks on workers rights….
i hope that we all do Remember…
Presssssssssssss ON!
Romney is really stupid. I am also certain he meant to say “extremely” conservative but somehow “severely” came out instead. He had a brain fart. It just does not make sense any other way.
Oh? I thought zombey meant to say “severely mendacious” and it came out “conservative”?
Hope the team has similar ads on how the rethugs have constantly attacked women’s right and health, especially in the last two years. wapo has a piece today on how mehmney lans on turning the tables on Obama on this. the writer seemed to be having an orgasm over it.
They have consistently hit a few important messages like social security, contraception, immigration and jobs over and over again instead of going all over the map even though the rethugs have been everywhere.
Excellent. On record, just in case etch-a-sketch tries to re-invent himself. As is the plan.
“No surprises, No Runarounds.” That is the theme of new rules the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau proposed Tuesday for the companies that “service” your mortgage.
That means your mortgage payment would be immediately credited; your records would be accurate and up-to-date; your statement would be clear and easy to understand; and you would be notified months in advance of a rate adjustment.
The rules would officially be introduced this summer and finished by January 2013, the bureau said, adding it was given authority to impose the rules by the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.

He’s in Chicago? Didn’t know he was driving down Lake Shore drive. 🙂
Good one Japa. I live close to LSD in Hyde Park. Beautiful in the summertime!

Hey TOD don’t forget, FL Michelle Obama will be on The Colbert Report tonight on comedy central at 11:30PM ET/ 10:30 PM CT.
Ah, thanks for the reminder UT, I’d completely forgotten!
Here’s a Colbert tease—his genius on display—–“debunking” GOP’s war on women

Genius is the only word, Dotster, adore him!! Thank you for the link.
Thank you. A classic.
Just finished watching the whole segment. He was hilarious.
He’s way better than Jon Stewart these days. Stewart is sometimes funny, but his personal issues with President Obama cloud his ability to be funny, so it comes out as petty and mean. Sad.
Btw- Japan needs to shoot down the NK missle.
It’s the only play they have, no way can they allow that thing to separate into outer stages!
This is a good debate on cspan and an unbiased moderator!
The RNC spokesperson has been lying from the get-go. He has not articulated Romney’s vision, because Willard doesn’t have one. Has only lied about PBO’s record – which is exactly what Romney plans to do for the rest of this campaign. The voters are fed up. The American people are disgusted. They want a vision and explanations of where things are and how far we’ve come and where we hope to go. President Obama does not only have a record, but he continues to have a vision of where he wants to go and a strategy of how to get there. In addition, he has the trust of the American people. Romney has NONE of those things and no amount of dirty money squandered in negative ads will help him.
Woodhouse seems more reasonable, a lot more facts. Has Spicer on the defensive!
Brad Woodhouse is a good Surrogate for the President.
PRESIDENT GEROGE W. BUSH ENTERS THE 2012 CAMPAIGN JUST IN TIME TO TALK TAX POLICY
On the very first day of the contest between President Obama vs Mitt Romney we get a stark reminder of the wreckage left by the Bush administration. The timing on this is just remarkable considering President Obama was in Florida talking about tax fairness and the Buffet Rule. And on top of that I would like to thank Karl Rove for deciding it was a good idea to run an ad giving GWB credit for energy gains and not Presdient Obama. Mitt Romney is joined at the hip with GWB. He is epousing the exact same policies that got us into this mess. Rachel Maddow had a long segment on this last night.
Bush tax custs leave stinging legacy

Did you see it?
Lol!
Hey TOD My tweet was read on C-SPAN Washington Journal for the second time in a row! Wooohooooo!!!!!!
I’m beginning to think that CSPAN is looking out for your tweets!
I saw it, I just posted about that. You had him on the defensive.
Nice job!
Great spot Jovie!!
That is good news UT, congrats!
UT, you legend!!! You’re going to have to hire an agent soon!!
Woooooot!!!
congrats ut, you twitter warrior. msm hacks must be shamed for their shameless shilling for the rethugs.
GO GIRL!
Ha! Is Brad Woodhouse putting this RNC dude on the defensive or what?
A thing of beauty!
I guess the RNC will not be having anymore honest debates in cspan anymore, because they are getting their clock cleaned!
It’s hard to win a debate w/o facts. The facts are on our side.
Although I can’t watch, from what I hear here and other places, the Dems are trying something different this year. Instead of playing defense, which actually gives the advantage to the other side, they are playing offense, challenging the Republicans. This forces the Republicans to defend the indefensible. They are used to having the Dems almost be apologetic and are having difficulty dealing with a party that stands up to them.
Like most bullies, they move along thinking they congtrol the situations. Well, Dems are getting fed up with being bullied around and are standing up to the RW.
I can’t wait for the REAL debates between the candidates themselves.
Good morning everyone!
Hello sleepyhead!
I am high on Benadryl – allergies are kicking my butt … Not even Romney will piss me off right now :-).
“I am high on Benadryl”

Good Morning, Chips & TODville – VC in the village for an hour or two! Hope everyone is off to a good start this Wednesday morning! 😆 😆
127th!!!! Morning VC 😉
😆 😆 😆 A very special ‘Good Morning’, Boss lady.
Why did I think
a) I could sneak in because you’d undoubtedly be busy?
b) you only keep score up to 100?
**whisper** psst, CC! You can put up the next post now while I’m hovering over the new post button and no one else is paying attention.
It’s coming verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry soon…….on your marks, get set….
Today will be the day TOD hits the 9 million hits mark. Hope you are prepared for us all to drop in for the party you are hosting, Chips. ANd then start planning on the 10 million party.
9 mil..wow! Chips, oh how your baby has grown! 🙂
Japa, I think I’ll bake another of my delicious cakes for the party – maybe like this one?
Aye yi yi…. Japa, be very careful!
Chips! I notice your FR page was and is still linked to KayKay’s page, but now that Ck has won, if you put it back to YOUR page, i’ma ready to help you meet your goal! Let us know when to start pushing buttons, okay? Love you Dear!
Ah Pamela, you’re verrrrrrrrrrrry kind, I’d completely forgotten that link. Thank you!
Brad Woodhouse was A+ on C-SPAN Washington Journal this morning. He hit Sean Spicer with fact after fact after fact. Spicer was on the defensive and all he did was attack, attack, attack. He had no idea what the GOP and Romney’s vision for America is. Woodhouse articulated all of PBO’s accomplishments. GM is alive, we were bleeding jobs under GWB, we’re now creating jobs, ACA, Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, comprehensive healthcare coverage for women under ACA. He went on and on and on. He hit the GOP hard about their war on women and pointed out that Democrats are out-raising the GOP and out-polling the GOP in terms of support from women. He also pointed out the evils of Citizens United and how the GOP aka Rove is planning to raise $200M to destroy one man.
Quite simply, Brad Woodhouse was great.
I know!
‘He hit Sean Spicer with fact after fact after fact. Spicer was on the defensive …’
😆 Utal, this is what I think/hope will happen from here on out. The President has meticulously and consistently cleared away all the usual arguments that the Repubs used to use to muddy the waters and has created an environment where the facts can be more clearly seen. Now he and his team has room to highlight the facts. Repubs have nothing to offer, NO FACTS that counteract the President’s position, and so they are left with ‘his tone is mean’, ‘we didn’t flesh our points out this way’, ‘he’s picking on us’, AND IMO they are so incapable of independent thinking or logical reasoning that they can’t come up with intelligent rebuttal. As the President has said more than once when he speaks to the country ‘These are the facts’, or words to that effect. PBO does not need to use dirty advertising – we are at a point where ‘just the facts’ and good GTV strategies will make a world of difference because the nation is gradually waking up to the real 2012 elections. Good timing all along, Mr. President! I sure am happy to be on your side. 😆 😆
Well, one thing Republucsns can do is Spin. But, not very good on the defense!
Exactly, Jovie, and PBO has been narrowing the spinning space so they have less and less room to manoeuvre. Now they need to defend their position in order to gain traction but they have no experience doing that. Instead of making an effort to learn how since 2008, they ramp up their lunacy and declared war on their terms – ‘We’ll make sure he is a one-term president, so we don’t have to change anything’. As usual with Repubs there’s been no plan B. Pres O, thank you for the change you’ve been bringing to the American political arena.
Chip,
Tampa bay Times Front Page headlines and big picture of POTUS-

Great headlines!
They used our pic Jovie!

Good Morning Everyone! I wish you all have a beautiful day today! Chips, I just wanted to pop in for a quick sec to thank you for the scrumptuous picture of George Clooney and that gorgeous guy next to him with the tuxedo and the billion dollar smile. I can go about my stressful day now with something yummy to think about! Thankyew, thankyew, thankyew! 😀
Love the hi-five in picture #1 too!
FLOTUS and Jill are on Tour today and Thursday. 1 year anniversary of Joining Forces initiative, many events planned!
Yesterday, Romney was trying to say that Obama has actually declared a war on women because soemthing like 94% of the jobs lost under Obama were held by women. Well, ignoring that there have been job gains under President Obama, let’s look at that figure. In actuality, of thos jobs lost which have not be regained, the majority probably were held by women. Because a lot of these jobs were public sector jobs, specially teachers and clerical, positions where there is a majority women participation. Of course, what Romney didn’t say is that these jobs were lost do to states (particularly Republican controlled states) slashing funding for education and that the President went to Congress several time to provide funding for the states so this wouldn’t happen and the Republicans refused to provide those funds. And of course, the media didn’t correct Romney.
My point being, of course, that Romney, unintentionally, provided more ammunition for Dems to talk about the Republican War on Women. Their attacks on women are not only in terms of personal choice but also economically.
Japa, I have your wonderful post all set to go, will wait til after PBO speaks.
Hope you corrected my spelling errors. 😉
did you read the wapo piece on this ? what a fucking disgrace for journalism.
I saw the rally in Delaware yesterday on C-SPAN. He is making no attempt to tone down his lies. PBO “hates business”, “apologizes all around the world”, blah, blah. A planted woman in the audience asked him how was he going to fight the lies of the Democrats. My blood pressure jumped too much to hear how he answered. The debates are going to be fun.
Good morning everyone. I am so glad I have this place to go to. I was on Yahoo first to check on the earthquake and saw two negative headlines “Obama’s money woes” was one of them, and “New Low in Support for Obama Health Care Law” and I felt really bad. Now that I’ve come here, read all the great articles, I feel much better. I feel sad, though, for all the people that have to read those lies (I didn’t click on them to read them) who believe that crap. Grrr
Worth noting that many of the articles on Yahoo come from the Associated Press, which has had a pro-GOP for many years now (in 2008 the AP editor in chief briefly entertained the idea of leaving to join the McCain campaign). So anything you read there should be taken with a grain of salt.
“pro-GOP slant”
I guessed that before, but it’s good to have it confirmed.
