The United States and Brazil will sign a new agreement Monday designed to promote more air travel between the countries.

The U.S.-Brazil Aviation Partnership Memorandum will be signed by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Brazilian Foreign Minister Antonio Patriota, Clinton said Monday in remarks in Washington, D.C.

The memorandum builds on another agreement signed by the two countries last year and is intended to promote more and safer air travel between the United States and Brazil.
ā€œWe think that’s a win-win,ā€ Clinton said Monday in comments. ā€œIt will promote not only our aviation industries and business travel, but also more tourism and exchanges,ā€ she said.

Hi All! I heard positive news on the radio I wanted to pass on. On a local radio show here in L.A., I heard a person from Bloomberg news being interviewed about the job numbers last Friday. The person said they interviewed 88 economists and they said the 121,000 jobs added last month was a anomaly in the job numbers. The economists they interviewed said they thought the numbers would go up in the coming months.

I had a cool thing happen to me I wanted to share. I have 2 Obama stickers on the back window of my car. One from 2008 that is worn, but SO cool. It says “Yes we did”. The other is for 2012 for Obama/Biden. A woman came up next to me with a big smile and thumbs up the other day. That’s unusual here in Orange County in Southern Calif., as there are a lot of conservative folks. Made my day! :o)

      • 72 0388jojothecat
        April 9, 2012 at 3:56 pm

I travel to the Orange curtin and one time I was there waiting in line at a grocery store, I was reading a magazine with Mrs Obama on the cover. The lady at the checkout said “I just love her, she is so nice and a beautiful woman”, all I could say is “yes I agree”.

        April 9, 2012 at 4:14 pm

My mom was driving my car with my 2012 sticker, and a woman at the gas station went delirious because she pointed to her bumper sticker and celebrated finding another Obama supporter in a pretty red town in Ventura County. They ended up talking for 20 minutes about how wonderful President Obama is and how we’re lucky to have him. I know I get encouraged every time I see a 2012 bumper sticker on the road.

Ok, so my first post in an earlier thread did come out a little too breathless, but it was reacting to the receipt of the email asking for references. So cooler heads are prevailing right now.

So some advice was that maybe i could go above my immediate supervisors, but that is a no go as well, since the Lab Mgr would be no better than the supervisers, who are good people, just very much a “catty” bunch for lack of a better word and they also can’t keep their mouths shut about matters that are not supposed to be for anyone other than supervisors i.e. they gossip too much and they have been known to pick favorites and use these favorites to snitch on other within the lab. As for the Lab Mgr I have seen and heard first hand about her ability to hold a grudge and be completely rude and downright condescending when she feels slighted or somehow maligned. To give you an example, my friend moved back home to NOLA and when she had her exit interview with the lab manager, essentially the lab mgr told her that “they” had decided to chose to give her the opportunity to work here since she was from NOLA and they figured she “needed” an opportunity. My friend informed the lab mgr, that no, in fact she CHOSE to work for them, she had 3 offers for employment and she chose the hospital because she thought it would be a nice place to work not the other way around as if she never woulda had that opportunity otherwise. She is also NOT above using her knowledge of your employment portfolio as snark or “i’m just playing” kinda BS. Another incident, where an employee was discussing a home she was looking at, not necessarily planning to buy, but just her “dream” home. The Lab Mgr looked at the home and said “with your salary”….WTF! The employee was so taken aback that she didn’t say anything, but later she was PO’d that the Lab Mgr would say such a thing in mixed company. So no, the Lab Mgr is NOT an option.

Anyway, here is the letter I wrote to the recruiter. Whatever her answer, I think I’m gonna go with the Senior Tech route rather than Sup/Mgr.

My name … I have applied for the Med Tech position in Microbiology at **** in ****. I received an email asking that I provide a reference to continue the process and that the references have to be from at least 2 of my direct managers. I am very interested in the job, but I’ll be honest, I am reluctant to provide references from my current managers due to the fact that I have not informed them that I am seeking a new position elsewhere particularly that I am seeking new employment in another state. I am concerned that I will be risking not necessarily the loss of my current job but more likely, I am afraid that if I do not get the job at **** that it will create an uncomfortable work environment at my current job due to the mere fact that it will be known that I am/was seeking employment elsewhere…
Thank you in advance for any advice you may have.

    • April 9, 2012 at 3:52 pm

lamh35 and others, I would caution you about putting too much specific personal info on any website or blog. This is a very cozy place but there are a lot of lurkers out there. I just think you can’t be too careful.

      • April 9, 2012 at 3:53 pm

        April 9, 2012 at 4:02 pm

Understood, but it is already known that I am a Microbiologist and a Med Tech, but you are right about the place name. I had forgot about that. But unable to change it since there isn’t an edit button.

        Maybe Chips can do it?

        • April 9, 2012 at 4:10 pm

Hi Lamh, I deleted the company and place name from your comment, just to be on the safe side.

        • April 9, 2012 at 4:10 pm

To your original purpose, I would advise that you leave out all that wording about your fears. I would simply ask, “can you assure me that my supervisors will not be contacted unless I am a final candidate?” Or, “Will you notify me before you contact my current employers?” This is a routine sort of issue and most professional hiring staff are well aware that this is a sensitive thing to negotiate. But I think it’s a good idea to put forward the best referees you possibly can from among your immediate line of authority.

      LAMH35,

When a company asks for references from Direct Managers, they don’t usually mean current managers. They are expecting you to have this from your prior job(s). If you don’t have it, don’t even mention it unless they mention it first.

Here is the article about the commemorative basketballs that were used at the Easter Egg Event today.

Today’s White House Easter Egg Roll included the usual sights: Tons of kids, lots of games, the Easter Bunny, assorted costumed characters, and the president and his family.

This year also featured the Barack Obama memorial basketball.

Players on the White House basketball court used a few red, white, and blue balls emblazoned with a portrait of the nation’s 44th president.

Obama signed some of the balls and posed for pictures with some of the professional players who attended the egg roll.

GOOD GOVERNMENT – “A Day In Your Life”

    This is a real eyeopener.

    ————————————-

Though we usually fail to notice it, government programs and policies improve our daily lives in innumerable ways.

Ask yourself this question: ā€œWhat has government done for me lately?ā€ If you are like most Americans, you will probably answer: ā€œNot much.ā€ Many people feel like they pay a lot in taxes but don’t really get anything back from government. Surveys show that 52% of Americans believe that ā€œgovernment programs have not really helped me and my family.ā€1 But let’s see if that is really true. Let’s examine a typical day in the life of an average middle-class American and try to identify some of the ways that government improves that person’s life during that 24-hour period.

Attempting to be crystal clear on just how real the #WarOnWomen is in the context of the total lack of real freedom these #KOCHSTER minions are:

Moreover, the lesson plan for the next 7 months needs to bring as many of these folk to the realization that President Obama is fine with them keeping their gun, but would also like them to have health care, the right to organize for fair work conditions, as well as their wife, daughter, mother, sister …. being treated with the dignity and equality every person deserves.
