Wednesday: PBO will host an Easter Prayer Breakfast at the White House. Christian leaders from across the country will join the President at this breakfast for a time of prayer, reflection, and celebration of Easter. Also on Wednesday, the President will sign the STOCK Act, which makes clear that Members of Congress are subject to the same insider trading laws that apply to everyone else. This was legislation the President called on Congress to pass in his 2012 State of the Union Address.
Thursday: PBO will sign the JOBS Act, which includes key initiatives the President proposed last fall to help small businesses and startups grow and create jobs.
Friday: PBO will deliver remarks at the White House Forum on Women and the Economy. Later, the President and the First Lady will mark the beginning of Passover with a Seder at the White House with friends and staff.

Chips, this is an excellent read onthe Health Care Debate in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court GOPers themselves are on trial here. The NYT editoral states clearly:
………”If the conservatives decide that they can sidestep the Constitution to negate Congress’s choices on crucial national policies, the court’s legitimacy — and the millions of Americans who don’t have insurance — will pay a very heavy price. Chief Justice Roberts has the opportunity to avoid this disastrous outcome by forging even a narrow ruling to uphold the mandate and the rest of the law. A split court striking down the act will be declaring itself virtually unfettered by the law. No truer words spoken. I would hope that if they struck down this law, Americans will open their eyes and see the Roberts Court for what it is. An extension not only of GOP, but the Teaparty.

Does the Court care? Does Roberts care about his ‘reputation’? did they care about Bush v. gore (yeah, yeah, before Roberts’ time but he epitomizes the mindset of turning the law on its head for partisan gain), Citizens United. Do they care? I think the ‘younger’ justices like Roberts and Alito in their own way actually believe that their dark vision of a darwinist America is the right vision. They were chosen not because they were smart, thoughtful legal scholars, but just because of their ideology. Are they capable of shame?
What can work to our benefit: Citizens United has not become ‘business as usual’ in the American mind, but a symbol of something deeply wrong with our system and the courts. There are Americans putting together Citizens United and Bush v. Gore and a third similar decision represents a disturbing pattern that could galvanize voters in November. If the image of ACA had been clearer in public perception up to this point, this wouldn’t be as heavy a lift. Could we still use it as a means of getting voters to the polls? You bet we can — but it would be easier if people like Chris Hayes and the rest of the media had had the kind of conversation he moderated yesterday on his show on the condition of health care in this country and the immense benefits of ACA and what will be lost if the bill is struck down. Imagine if there had been that kind of message for the last three years, from a responsible media and from the administration who underestimated the effort of the American people.
I’m more hopeful the law will survive because insurance companies are now balking at repeal. I’ll try to find the link to what I read yesterday. They have already made adjustments that will be complicated to undo and the easiest path to profit for them is actually insuring more people. Even they recognize that there is just so much you can wring out of the people if your pool becomes smaller and smaller. One can hope.
Something ironic occurred to me the other day: corporations are ‘people’ who not only get the benefits of being a corporation like immunity from personal liability,lower taxes, but all of the other benefits of being an individual. What is ironic is that if the personal mandate and ACA are struck down, actual people don’t have the rights and benefits as enshrined in the Constitution. It is unconscionable beyond words.
Now our one hope is that the five Republican justices decide to read a newspaper instead of redstate as their source of information.

I am in complete agreement with you 57 and female. The justices (small j because they no longer deserve a capital) don’t give a rip about what Americans think about them. They haven’t suffered any consequences for their activist judgments, so why would they think any differently about how they might be viewed in the case of the ACA?

No. Please don’t get rid of the recent comments lists. Sometimes WP messes up and the recents comments list allows me to see that you’ve put up a new post and that’s the only way I can get into the new comments thread.
New posts (the last 10 posts by chips) will still be there, ut. The recent comments utmost lists the 10 comments and pretty much useless, imo.
Sometimes WP acts funky for me and I don’t see the last 10 posts by Chips so I need her to leave the recent comments lists as is.

G’day all! Som of us don’t have the magic boxes, and the recent comments list is very helpful, mostly for seeing who is where, as at times those of us slow-coaches are trying to catch up. On the other hand, as the list only captures a few recent posts, maybe it is not so important. One thing I like about it however, on a really lengthy thread, it can save a great deal of time scrolling to the end of the comments.

FLOTUS seems to top herself with every new look. She has really come into her own in these last several years with her successful initiatives and her growing self-confidence in herself and in her role as first lady. I think that confidence just glows in her and makes her a luminous presence in any setting. Everyone else on any stage just shrinks in comparison to her the way they do when PBO is there. It’s always a joy to see a beautiful, intelligent person blossom like Michelle Obama has. It’s what every mother would love to see in her children. Mrs. Robinson must be very, very proud of her as are we all.

Almost forgot to comment on how beautiful all the Obama women looked last night on the KCA!!!! First Lady was rocking that outfit, and both girls looked so adorable! I watched the whole show with my grandson Jordan, even though I did not know many of the folks on there. My grandson, he’s nine, kept telling me I need to watch Nickelodeon more so that I will know who all those young kids were:)…. I did enjoy the show, although I would have hated being sprayed with all that green goo…chat with everyone later!

Forgot it was Palm Sunday. Maybe that’s where my Catholic friend is instead of going to a craft fair with me. However, her usually sane parish is going batshit crazy along with Cardinal George here in Chicago. At least her two daughters are liberal, much to the consternation of their father. Ha!
And what a fraud he is. He thinks his children will remain celibate until they’re 30. They are 13 and 17, and once they start to have sex he’ll crawl over broken glass to get them birth control pills.
The 17 year old is probably already doing just that.
She’s a tad backward. However, she’s been cast as a serving wench at the Renaissance Faire this summer. No matter how much her parents have sheltered her, I expect a different kid after this summer.
I was born late in my family. My brother was 15 years older than I. We had lost an 11 year old sister to an aneuysm 11 months before I was born. By the time I hit college, was doing theatre and pulling all-nighters at college putting on shows, my parents were done with raising kids. My mother encouraged me to find some roommates, move out so she didn’t have to see me wandering in at 5:30 a.m. She figured she’d done her job, I was going to do what I was going to do anyway and I had a good head on my shoulders and would assume the consequences of my actions.
I was blessed with parents who raised me to a responsible adult. It was to my good fortune, because they were both dead by the time I was 21. I knew how to function and take care of myself, thanks to them. They didn’t leave me any financial security (although I benefited from Social Security survivor benefits until I was 22, thank God) but they left with me the skills to function in the world, and my good FDR-Democratic, social justice liberal politics.

Good morning, Chips and TODers! Last night, I was shadowing a couple of kids while their parents weren’t available, and was “forced” to watch the Kids’ Choice Awards for hours – and saw Mrs. Obama! Her outfit was to die for, and her presentation was great. Then they showed her dancing while sitting in the audience, with Secret Service agents up on their feet, too! Almost made it worth watching all that green slime and hearing all those cutesy songs, although I did recognize a couple of songs that I actually liked!

The answer to the broccoli argument is the home mortgage argument. That the ‘choice’ to not buy a home has some effect on commerce and the economy has been readily accepted for generations, but the choice to not buy health insurance affects absolutely every citizen at some point in their lives. It is even more compelling than the home mortgage interest deduction.
Hopefully Justices Sotomayor and Kagan are reading left-wing arguments today (yes, even though the vote has happened, minds can be changed). Hopefully, Scalia and Alito are reading some elementary text on how insurance works, since they were clueless.
When people were unhappy with Verrilli, this is why. If he had shot back the broccoli argument with the home mortgage interest deduction argument, there would be a lot less hand-wringing.
Really? When have those prone to handwringing *not* jumped on any opportunity to do so? They don’t play fair or honestly. If it hadn’t been that, it would have been something else. /shrugs
Thanks for sticking around. Unfortunately, this doesn;t really work. There is a difference. The mortgage break is a deuction which reduces your taxes. It does not increase your tax load. For the insurance mandate, there is an increase in your taxes. There is no mandate to get a mortgage. It only applies to homw owners. Apples and oranges.
Damn. Thought we were on to something. I see the distinction. The rest of the post referred to the terminology used in the law, which seems to be a focus and is making my head spin this morning.
There’s really nothing that really compares to healthcare that affects commerce if everyone does not purchase health insurance or have some type of insurance for their healthcare. Not even car insurance but with so many drivers on the road, if everyone who drives but DOES NOT purchase auto insurance, it affects the cost of insurance to all drivers. Yes, people have the choice not to drive, but due to the lack of true mass transit in most states, people drive…adults and teens drive. This is like one of the courts talking about cell phones, could the government mandate everyone purchase one, I can borrow someone’s cell phone, I can’t borrow someones healthcare card when I get sick. Yes, I can go to an emergency hospital who will treat me but if I don’t have insurance, they can make me stable and as long as I can walk out on my own, they will release me even if I am still feeling sick. That’s what happened last year here in CA, they were releasing sick,poor, homeless patients and putting them in a cab and dropping them off on the streets.

Health reform will reach its full promise in two more years, when 30 million more Americans will have health insurance, when women will no longer be discriminated against in their insurance rates and when states will create health insurance exchanges to help streamline the currently confusing and chaotic insurance marketplace.
Beyond better health insurance, health reform has catalyzed a quiet revolution in the way hospitals and doctors are meeting their patients’ needs.
Using a combination of carrots and sticks, the Affordable Care Act is fostering better teamwork and coordination among medical providers, improved use of information technology and a greater focus on the outcomes that patients value most.
There are many provisions of health reform that will help us find and eliminate wasteful care, reduce medical errors and reduce health disparities.

The Supreme Court has now heard arguments for and against several provisions of the law, but the reality is there is no going back.
The changes in the way we provide health care are long overdue, and health reform provided the needed kick-start.

I have a funny to share. My 72 year old husband is learning the computer. Pretty much, he can’t seem to get past the Chicago Tribune site, although I’m trying to teach him how to get to blogs, etc. He can do a search but doesn’t understand what to click on when he gets there. This was particularly hilarious yesterday when what he was searching all came up in German, but I digress. He read me a portion of this letter and I wanted to post it but I couldn’t find it easily since it was from yesterday’s paper.

I know it is a tall order but those of us who support health care reform, PBO and common decency of one’s right to have health care MUST SHAME THIS SCOTUS.
we cannot just sit back and let the rightwingers un-do ACA just because they hate PBO.
In terms of affording and accessing care, PBO will be just fine no matter what the right wing SCOTUS does about the mandate and the law. The ones who are going to loose will be us ordinary people who need the health care reform to work.
We have to confront this court with personal stories and our own arguments in order to amplify PBO’s arguments
How? They don’t read our correspondence; they are completely removed from the realities of American life. Plus they have proven time and again they are immune to shame.
They are not immune to who we vote for. We need to vote out every Republican and gop policy across the country. Just like the gop did, it has to be grass roots starting with school boards, mayors, local legislatures, state governors, attorney generals, judges, secretary of states, on and on. We allowed the rich to buy our politicians in the pass 40 years and this is the result. We are smarting and paying closer attention now and we need to continue the fight.
Yes they are immune to who we vote into office. They have their jobs for LIFE. Doesn’t matter who is in office in any branch of government at any level. The only recourse we have is keeping a Democrat in power in the White House and a favorable Senate for when these vacancies happen so they can be replaced with reasonable people who care more about the Constitution than who takes them to dinner.

Just as a word of caution – besides the usual braying from the media, there is no indication whatsoever that the Supreme Court wil overturn the ACA. This has been all the media’s speculation. We have seen this movie before. We know what it’s about. I think we should wait until the ruling is announced to make a judgement and and if the ruling happens to be against the ACA, what the substantive impact of that will be.
Of course we don’t know. But the questioning by the conservative justices cannot be ignored. We all remain hopeful but from mainstream conservative lawyers through liberal court watchers, the consensus is that the questioning was craven, political, partisan and phenomenally uninformed and uninterested in legal precedent and their own previous rulings. Their pattern is activism of using the pretense of law as a club against what was considered normal for most of our judicial history. We can’t ignore that either. We’re coming late to the game, but it is immensely important that we do our utmost to inform the public of what this law really does and how much it has already accomplished and will accomplish in the future. The stakes are very high.

I would take my cues from PBO, Senator Reid and VP Biden than from any of these – regardless of what their consensus may be.
I am hopeful and will remain so, but what would you expect the President and the V.P. to say in public? That they were worried? There is no serious reason to derail this law. There would have been a time when no Supreme Court would have bothered to hear this case at all. But this Supreme Court is rather unique in its blatant disregard for law and the Constitution over partisanship. I’m not taking my cues from the likes of Chris Matthews or Jeffrey Toobin, who has only played a lawyer on TV rather than actually be one for about 15 years, I’m reading serious analysis. A lot of it, and believe me, hopefruit2, I’m looking for all the good cues I can find. There is hope to be gleaned from some aspects of the oral arguments. And a derailment of this law plunges millions of Americans, including seniors, back into the abyss dramatically. But I can see them rationalizing that that’s Congress’ problem, not theirs. These Republican justices are looking for any and every opportunity to undo the government’s responsibility to regulate commerce for the general welfare. This is the kind of lawyer John Roberts was. I can see Boehner keeping the prescription drug fix for seniors in with a voucher or some such nonsense, and placating seniors. They are nothing if not crafty.
I am hoping that the fear of political backlash will at least give Kennedy pause. I don’t have much hope that they have a shred of decency or concern for their ‘reputation’, when it is precisely a dismantlement of everything progressive since the New Deal that they crave as their legacy. I’m hoping that they understand that such a precedent could have unintended consequences on the profits of their corporate masters in other instances. I’m hoping that they are paying attention to the fact that the insurance industry actually would like to try it this way, although I am sure there are plenty of lobbyists who would rather derail ACA, gouge profits out of the system for the next decade and not give a damn what happens after that, while millions of Americans suffer.
The most proactive things we can do is get the word out about how important this bill is and how much good it has and will accomplish in the future so that we have a solid majority of Americans either cheering its win or understanding the consequences of derailment and ready to remove Republicans from office with renewed vigor.

President Obama has openly and publicly criticized the Supreme Ct in the past, and he would not hesitate to do so if he felt that their actions would result in a dangerous situation for the American People where the ACA is concerned. Being so cavalier in the face of an imminent threat to the one piece of legislation that he fought so long and hard for is not consistent with PBO’s modus operandi.
PBO has always been upfront with the American people when he felt that the Republicans (whether in congress or Supreme court) were attempting to derail progress by undoing important accomplishments. For example, PBO ALWAYS acknowledges when the Republicans are blocking important bills or siding with Wall Street, Big Oil, etc, and he keeps saying that this election is going to require even more work from us because the forces are even greater than they were in 2008.
Why would he and VP Biden so naively and casually gloss over the ACA if they indeed felt that it was in grave danger (or were not sure what was going to happen)? Giving a false sense of security is patronizing and not going to help the millions of people who will be left hanging if they no longer enjoy the benefits derived from the ACA. I seriously doubt that our President is that kind of person – nothing in his behavior thus far has suggested that he is. Even on a political level – in an election year, why would he engage in that sort of behavior? This man is not naive, nor is he callous. Ditto for VP Biden.
Precisely. The public must be made aware of how important this bill is. If they don’t know, they won’t fight to stop Repubs in November. It has never been more critical to not allow Republicans to take any more power. The courts are pathetic enough without giving Republicans more chance to ruin them for the next two generations.
1) This SCOTUS will not be shamed.
2) The oral arguments are theater and may or may not have anything to do with the eventual decision.
3) Health care reform will go forward no matter what SCOTUS does.

I had a quiet dinner with a few friends who were on the fence about their lack of knowledge of the ACA, in my opinion. So I had a “Drink To Your Health Lite Dinner.” They had ‘choices’ of their drinks provided by me as well. The menu was Rack of Lamb, and Garlic Roasted Chicken. green with mixed fresh vegetable with lite Olive Oil, Rosemary Hot Bread.

We had a lovely time getting to meet 4 people who were not of ‘our circle’. and everyone present had health issues and some had children who had children in college on parents insurance policy. It was an interesting group.
I attached to each wine glass and tea pots (I collect tea pots for myself) one item that the ACA does. As they sipped their drinks they were asked what they knew about that item that was attached to the wines and the teas. Believe me, I knew that they did not have the facts, so it was laughable but yet sad.
Then I gave a simple answer from my sheet for the lack of knowledge. When we finished the evening, they were so excited to know that they had a tool to go to: HHS.gov WhiteHouse.gov etc. to get the information and share with others. I had made a hostess gift favor for each to carry with them. It included a dessert wine(you notice that I did not serve dessert), little slips with HHS.gov, WhiteHouse.gov sites for them to go to. I also included the DOJ site. Some have friends with children in law school and soon will be looking for jobs, and want to work for the government.(DOJ puts out job openings as well on their sites.)
We had a lovely non-confrontational evening(maybe a little tipsy) but they left with more workable knowledge than they came with to the dinner. The BIGGIE was some did not know that President Obama made this possible in the ACA. Remember I said up front that I noticed that some were on the fence, not knowing who or where to give the credit. I believe that because of the atmosphere that was created at the dinner. They are now more than ever ready to come back to the ship and really continue to work to help all of us get POB re-elected.
We all may not be able to get a dinner with POB or our FLOTUS, but our friends can get a “Dinner With Us,” especially those who have given up a little or have been getting their news from unreliable sources. ‘We Can Help Make The Change We Need’ with a wine party, a dessert evening, a musical evening, a BBQ get-together, a jazz evening, a card night, a sorbet or ice cream evening, a favorite pie evening, or a plain ole ‘Let’s B Political Tonight.” Do you thing. This emporium for girls and women — some under age or forced into prostitution — is in turn owned by an opaque private company called Village Voice Media. Until now it has been unclear who the ultimate owners are.
That mystery is solved. The owners turn out to include private equity financiers, including Goldman Sachs with a 16 percent stake.
