HEADLINE: A Class Trip Meant Much to Mexico

// MEXICO CITY β€” After weighing the risks of traveling to Mexico, the parents of one American teenager decided to allow her to join a school trip to Oaxaca, where students volunteered at an orphanage, visited archaeological sites and sipped vanilla milkshakes on the honey-colored town plaza. The fact that the parents were President Obama and the first lady, Michelle Obama, and that the teenager was their daughter Malia, thrilled Mexican tourism officials, who are trying to redefine the country’s image as it has struggled with drug violence. //

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Today, as President Obama went to Ohio State University to discuss the all-out, all-of-the-above strategy for American energy, the White House announced new funding to advance the development of American-made small modular reactors (SMRs), an important element of the President’s energy strategy.Β  A total of $450 million will be made available to support first-of-its-kind engineering, design certification and licensing for up to two SMR designs over five years, subject to congressional appropriations.Β  Manufacturing these reactors domestically will offer the United States important export opportunities and will advance our competitive edge in the global clean energy race. Small modular reactors, which are approximately one-third the size of current nuclear plants, have compact, scalable designs that are expected to offer a host of safety, construction and economic benefits.

In a bitter primary battle between two sitting congressmen, one Democratic House member is accusing another of selling out President Obama by watering down healthcare reform.

Rep. Steve Rothman (D-N.J.) released a web video Thursday attacking Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.) for allegedly giving up on the public option when the House was tackling health care reform in 2010. But Pascrell’s campaign pushed back, arguing he fought tirelessly for the public option and played a major role in shaping the sweeping legislation that Democrats championed.

Rothman and Pascrell are squaring off in a June primary to determine whose career in the House will come to an end.

Having dispatched with a small business measure and congressional insider trading bill, the Senate is poised to take up a bipartisan measure that would overhaul the cash-strapped Postal Service’s operations next week.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who has called the postal legislation a priority in recent weeks, filed for cloture on Thursday, setting up a Monday vote on the bill from Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Tom Carper (D-Del.) and Scott Brown (R-Mass.).

Carper said Thursday that he welcomed Reid’s decision to move the bill to the floor, and said that Congress had to move fast to help an agency that has lost billions of dollars in recent years.

I heard the main reason the USPS keeps operating in the red is because for years they’ve spent the money it brought in on other stuff. Wish I could find the past article. The info disappeared as quickly as it came.

I used to think there were just ‘some’ corrupt members of congress. Now I hope there are ‘some’ that are not corrupt. But that hope is fading

Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) announced Thursday he will convene a committee hearing to consider whether to make it a federal crime to participate in bounty systems in sports, such as the one used in the NFL’s New Orleans Saints locker room.

“Bribing players to intentionally hurt their opponents cannot be tolerated,” Durbin said on the Senate floor. “We have to put an end to this.”

You can still post under your old name by doing this in wp account.

Hover your mouse on the wp account name (top right corner).

In the drop-down menu, click “Edit my profile”.

In “display your name publicly as”, put your old name (or any name you want).

Save changes by clicking “Update Profile” at the very bottom. Voila.

For example, I changed my name just now from “amk for obama” to “amk”.

Irish political party Fianna Fail has said it will seek to expel its former leader and prime minister Bertie Ahern in the wake of the Mahon Tribunal.

The tribunal found that Mr Ahern failed to truthfully account for a number of financial transactions, but did not make a corruption finding against him.

Mr Ahern said he had never “received a corrupt payment”.

However, the party said the findings regarding Mr Ahern constituted “conduct unbecoming a member of Fianna Fail”.

The Irish government has asked the Irish police to look at the findings of a report into corruption in the Republic’s planning process.

In its report, the Tribunal rejected the former Taoiseach’s evidence about the sources of money in his bank accounts.

In a statement on Thursday, the former taoiseach said he had never done “anything to demean any office” he had held.

    • March 23, 2012 at 12:59 am

He’s a tough nut to crack, that one. I like him personally – seems funny, charismatic. But professionally, he seems like he’s been handed everything in life, and doesn’t really take into consideration the impact of his actions on real people. I can’t believe they’re lowering taxes for the rich while enforcing austerity on their people – it’s irresponsible and outrageous. But, people voted for him, so they’re paying the price.

So Nate Silver continues his Romney pimping by saying that Romney’s GOP rivals have missed opportunities with Etch-a-Sketch gaffe partly because Romney has the support of the establishment, and the financial backing of superpacs, and it’s a good time in the calendar year to make a gaffe like this because folks will forget soon, and blah blah….

We already know that Romney will be the GOP nominee – so that makes PBO his chief rival, not the GOP contenders. And don’t claim that folks will have forgotten Etch-a-Sketch by then. They won’t. The Obama campaign and DNC camp will make sure of that.

I’ve actually seen Air Force One land. It is the coolest thing. The first thing that is cool is that there are NO OTHER PLANES IN THE SKY. You know you are waiting for AF1, but there’s really nothing to see. Then in the distance, there is the smallest speck of a plane, but you see that hump. The unmistakeable hump on the front of AF1, and the blue, gold and white livery.

Then “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” comes into focus. VERY COOL, indeed!!

I’m still watching the UStream feed. Wonder why it stopped? I thought they were taxiing to take off.

LOL! Y’all I have to tell you this story…I’m giving away my age, but I’m to hyped to care tonight.

I was on the organizing committee for the prom my junior year in H.S. The band that we arranged to play at prom backed out at the last minute and all we could get was 3 dudes from the marching band who were trying to start a little R&B group. They only knew how to play one popular song. It was “Brick House” by the Commodores. They played over and over and over again… all night long. Ad nauseum. Interspersed with a few football fight songs. Someone went home and brought in a boombox so we could have some music while they were on break. On top of that I broke with my boyfriend the week before prom cuz he cheated on my and ended up going with this nerdy guy who could barely speak, but had a crush on me. He kept asking me all night if I was having a good time. All I could was just smile and say “sure”. Ugh! It was the saddest thing! I swore I never wanted hear that damned song again. But I can’t escaped it. It’s like a musical “GroundHog Day” Curse you Lionel Ritchie!! πŸ™‚

US lawmakers have released $88.6m (Β£56m) in development aid for the Palestinians that has been frozen since for more than six months.

The move comes after two senior Republicans from the House of Representatives dropped their opposition to freeing the funds.

One of them, Rep Illeana Ros-Lehtinen, said the money must not go to the Gaza Strip, which is run by Hamas.

Timeless, gives me chills. My older cousin Henry who I thought was the coolest black man on the planet when I was a young pre-teen, introduced me to Sly and the Family Stone with this song along with ” thank you falettinme be mice elf again” …

Everything about these guys is cool…I actually have this ALBUM…giving my age away? The fact that this music is timeless, is a testament to how good they were.

Just popped back in. Has anyone see George Clinton’s movie “Cosmic Slop”. If not and you can find it, check it out.

Spoiler alert: Any black person darker than a brown bag got taken away in the mothership. But still see the movie.

Woke up and followed the bad girls here. You sassy Miss Thangs, love your music choices. Reminds me of slow-dragging at the house parties when the parents left the room. All hugged up, nice and slow, with the sweet bad boys. Better exit before I go too far down memory lane.
