Steve Benen: At the most recent debate for the Republican presidential candidates, Mitt Romney wanted to show off his understanding of international affairs, and told the audience that Syria is Iran’s “key ally” and Iranians’ “route to the sea.”

Iran, of course, has 1,520 miles of its own coastline – and doesn’t share a border with Syria….

Today he has an op-ed in the Washington Post, calling for …. shaping a U.S. policy towards Iran that’s “the same as Ronald Reagan’s.”

Um, Mitt? The Reagan administration sold Iran weapons, in violation of an arms embargo, in order to help illegally finance the Contras in Nicaragua…..

Suh-weet! You got a really good smile here, OurManFlint! 😆 This man ALWAYS lightens my heart. His and his wife’s smiles alone can boost the national health. I wouldn’t be surprised if there have statistically been fewer stress-related illnesses or heart problems in USA since their arrival in the WH

        Evening!

I missed most of the President’s press conference today, but the part I saw was fabulous! His responses were masterful, so well delivered, just about one of the best – I think – he’s ever conducted, among a million bests!

JOB, Chips Chica seems to have a secret cache of Obama pics that were not previously published to keep us salivating non-stop. Not that I’m complaining as I totally appreciate the new views, but I have to admit I wonder with whom she has behind-the-scenes connections. I lurve the happy, relaxed face AND the way the body wears the dress. 😉

vc – You are right about Mrs. Obama’s “relaxed face.” She always looks well rested. Reminds me that my grandmother used to say you’ll always sleep well, if you “have a clear conscience.” And you are also right about the secret cache or hidden treasure trove or personal stash of new photos that Chips keeps bringing to us: who care where she gets ’em, as long as she keeps sharing!

JOB, l am way past ecstatic that CC can Periodically Produce Previously ‘unPublished’ Pics of the Pres & his family from her secret cache, but I confess I also love to tease her at every opportunity. {She sometimes hits back so beautifully I watch in admiration. I know, that was catty. Meow.

  6. March 6, 2012 at 7:16 pm

Darnit, I guess I’m a pol fanatic then, cause I wasn’t gonna watch the returns, but now I’m watching it cause the coverage on MSNBC is not half bad it’s definitely way better than CNN. CNN in an effort to be “fair and balanced” relies too heavily onf wishy washy old school partisans on Dem side who just are NOT willing to go for the jugular and are too quick to be “respectful” to the other side. The only 2 people who actually put up a fight is Paul Begala and Roland Martin and unfortunately Roland’s out at CNN and there is only so much Begala can do. Donna Brazile I like because she’s a NOLA homegirl, but she is just too concilatory towards scumbags like Ari Fleisher and the like. Also, the anchors on CNN are not tough at all. They like to talk tough, but other than Wolf Blitzer occasionally the whole anchor cast of CNN are patsies.

So my predictions: Romney wins OH and possibly TN.

My hope just cause chaos is that Santorum wins OH and TN.

    But I still think it’s Mitt’s night.

Uh oh, Pres. Obama said “I make no apologies for being chauvinistic.” Let’s see how long it takes for that comment to be taken out of context.

    • 50 Jessica
      March 6, 2012 at 7:23 pm

Wow, your right. That will be taken out of context. I had to look up the definition online. When I think of chauvinistic, I think of someone who is sexist. I didn’t even know it meant militant devotion to one’s country.

      • 51 Melanie
        March 6, 2012 at 7:31 pm

He said the same thing in the speech in NY the other night and I was like huh?? Had never used the word in that context before.

      • March 6, 2012 at 7:44 pm

It’s because the only time we ever hear that word is in the phrase, “male chauvinist pig”, someone who feels superior to and demeans and belittles women. We rarely hear it in this other context.

    • 53 Hachikō
      March 6, 2012 at 7:29 pm

      POTUS said that?

      • 54 Jessica
        March 6, 2012 at 7:31 pm

Yes apparently it also means fanatical patriot and militantly devoted to one’s country. Did not know that whatsoever.

        • March 6, 2012 at 7:45 pm

Neither did I. Always thought it was sexist. See, he can “school” us too. 🙂

        • 56 Hachikō
          March 6, 2012 at 7:46 pm

Ah! So he used it in that context. Thanks!

        • March 6, 2012 at 9:16 pm

Jessica, the use of chauvinist to mean “super patriot” was how I first learned the word in my high school days before the women’s movement. Oh how time does fly!!! People used to say of the proud and haughty Charles DeGaulle that he was a French chauvinist. Any president who can casually use the term “international fora,” as PBO did in a Newsweek interview, would be very familiar with the original meaning. Yes, PBO knew exactly what he was doing.

      • 58 LOL
        March 6, 2012 at 7:33 pm

Yeah, he was talking about promoting America as far as wanting the country to have the best roads, bridges, broad band, etc. And as Jessica said it means a totally different thing. This will surely fail if the Repubs think they have something. Yes, the man who has 2 daughters, an independent minded wife (WHO HE WORKED UNDER) , who was raised by a single mother, and then a single grandmother, is chauvinistic. Yeah, good luck with that.

    • March 6, 2012 at 7:35 pm

Ok, now I KNOW hes screwing with them now. None of those fools would know the “other” definition for chauvinistic, and they will probably pounce like a cat in heat on that one.

        March 6, 2012 at 7:44 pm

Aslyfox, it’s actually the first definition. It’s just that, somehow, it got tagged with “male chauvinist pig” He is really messing with their heads!! I think it’s hilarious!! 😀 😆 😀 😆 😎

        FreeDictionary

        chau·vin·ism
        n.
        1. Militant devotion to and glorification of one’s country; fanatical patriotism.

That’s why I only identify myself as an Obamademocrat. I really get pissed off with most of the democrats in Congress (with a few exception) with their lack of visible support for President Obama. They’d rather stayed in the background talking to useless reporters about their disappointment in PBO, and how he doesn’t call them on the phone or invite them to the WH. Basically they want PBO to babysit them and do their jobs for them at the same time. So disappointed with the lot of them spineless and not fit to be called democrats. I don’t know what I’m going to do after President Obama serves his final second term in office.

No, the emoprogs were hyperfocused on her when they were still in the “OBAMASUX” mode. Now that she and PBO are clearly in the team, the interest is gone. But the true Democrats are going to vote for her come November.

          • March 6, 2012 at 9:21 pm

Elizabeth Warren will have the great good fortune to be running in an presidential election year when turnout will be very high in a blue state like Massachusetts where Dems outnumber Rs. It’s early days.

It’s very early still and voters aren’t paying attention to the senate – yet. Once Elizabeth Warren starts to campaign and debate scott brown, you will see those numbers change.

PM Carpenter had a post on this, saying that once she was branded as liberal her support fell in relation to his. It was more a post about how we let the word liberal get away from us, so there weren’t a lot of details about the race. Sorry I don’t have the link — haven’t figured out how to cross link on my iPhone. I have a lot of faith in Warren, though!

LL, I agree with you. It is so hard to be first when there is so much to savor here. Thank you, Chips for everything! I just viewed the whole press conference of the WH pool of fools. That was so wonderful from beginning to end. He keeps taking those wannabe journalists to school and back.
I just love to watch him chew them up and spit them out.

The lady in red is so “hollywood”. She sits as she has arrived and everyone there should be glad that she showed up. Why do the same ones get the front row seat? They are so disgusting. While watching them ask questions, I could not believe that they get paid to do this and was hoping that Sandra Fluke would pop inand ask an intelligent civil question.

There was no interest or mention of the devistation of the victims of the tornados nor any follow up question of the President’s plan to support homeowners and especially the armed forces families. They were so busy trying to setup the President with aha questions.

I had the pleasure of meeting Congrssman Payne at an event last year. What a wonderful man and an avid supporter of the President. It touched my heart that he expressed his condolence to his family. We have true gentleman for a President.

‘There was no interest or mention of the devastation of the victims of the tornadoes nor any follow up question of the President’s plan to support homeowners and especially the armed forces families.’

THIS is what I was hinting at when I popped in on my lunchtime. Whenever I check out a press conference I get the distinct impression the so called reporters have absolutely no interest in what is being said. They never seem to at least reference the current point/s raised by the speaker before launching into their prepared GOP questions. IMO they do not take anything new to their own audience because they are never open-minded during the presser. I once asked Jay on Twitter why these guys are not rotated out of the front, or something similar, but got no answer. 😉

Jovie, it does boggle the mind that people think Rick Santorum shows empathy with their problems–a man who can’t see beyond his own nose. As for Mitt, he skipped that word empathy in the dictionary and throughout his whole life. It takes a human being to feel empathy for another and, with Mitt, one part of that equation is missing.

It’s so obvious from twitter and the on camera folks that Romney has won Ohio. It’s like when POTUS was gonna announce that we had caught and killed Osama Bin Laden. You could tell that the reporters knew what the news was, but they had to try their damndest to keep it mum so as not to upstage the POTUS.

This is exactly how is seems to be going right now in terms of Ohio.

Romney is leading in Ohio by 3 points. The fact that Romney cannot beat Santorum in Ohio by double digits bodes poorly for Romney in the general. Romney only beat Ron Paul by 12 points in VA – when he should have swept Virginia with at least 70% of the vote.

It sure would save a lot of wasted time and money, and take these no-ideas Republican politicians from the public sphere. Maybe I should drop the suggestion of a specific new voting date on social media like the OWS original instigators did? /just kidding. I do know – I think- that the November election date is governed by law.

Elizabeth Warren used to be a Republican. She probably has very conservative views in certain areas even though she seemed
“progressive” when it came to economic issues.

Saw a Yahoo news title when logging onto the site tonight saying Palin is staying open to being the GOP candidate. I guess she figures she can wait until all the hard work is done then get nominated at the convention. I have not figured out why she has not come to the realization she cannot stick with anything to completion. In researching her during the ’08 Primaries I discovered she had quit many things in her life besides later the Governorship. She quit as Mayor, then the energy job she was appointed to before the election to AK Gov. It seemed like when I read her online info that she might have adult ADHD. I had had a student teacher in my classroom with it once and recognize the symptoms.

From Williards’ press conference. So whatever the Question is, say you have been clear and/or straightforward and then bash the President and lastly wrap it up with some nonsensical gibberish. Oh yeah, and don’t answer the question, Rinse and Repeat.
    ——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-
Question: You said you stand with the Syrian people. Would you support airstrikes like John McCain has suggested, or barring that or other direct involvement from the U.S., how is your position different from that of President Obama?

Romney: My view is that we should state very clearly our opposition to Mr. Assad. The president took a long time to reach that conclusion. I also believe that it is essential for us to work with Turkey, as well as with Saudi Arabia who are of like mind with us in certain respects with regard to Syria to encourage the arming of the Syrian rebels.

I also believe it’s important for us to recognize that the Alawites should receive communication from us and from others — that there is a future for them in Syria after Assad. Our — in terms of military action I have not taken a step at this point to encourage military action on our part. That’s an option for us, but have not reached that point at this stage. I’ll continue to be briefed week to week as to the developments in that country and uh, and that could change at some point in the future, but at the current stage I’m not favoring military involvement, direct military involvement by the United States.

Question: John Kerry went on the Senate floor today and denounced your op-ed statement on Iran as empty rhetoric. What’s your response to that?

Romney: My view on Iran is pretty straightforward — and that is, this president has made some extraordinary errors. This president did not put in place crippling sanctions when he came into office. He has dawdled for three years to finally get sanctions in place. Secondly, when the people of Tehran went to the streets to protest a stolen election, he had nothing to say. And then with regards to military action, he seems to be more concerned about Israel potentially taking a military action than he is about Iran becoming nuclear. I think it’s very important for us to make it very clear that a nuclear Iran is not acceptable to the United States, is not acceptable to the world. And believe that is something that I should continue to speak about and I hope the president picks up the same refrain.

    Source: Politico

    • March 6, 2012 at 8:28 pm

Question:Why are you trying to sound like Barack Obama in this press conference. Saying straightforward over and over again still makes you sound like a jackass.

    • 149 Obama Grandmama
      March 7, 2012 at 1:42 am

My thoughts on Mitt Romneys foreign policy speeches is that I want my President to be cautious in reviewing the situation before acting or saying something. What I have seen with Romney is he just says whatever comes to mind and then sometimes even within an hour he will say he didn’t understand the question and has a different opinion. That has happened repeatedly and I would like it tallied so that it can be brought up by the President when Romney accuses him of acting too slowly. I’d rather have a complete review with thorough understanding instead of the quick unstudied response that Romney tends to give.

Tweety Mathews’ new thing is to keep repeating that the Republicans are blowing an election “they can win”. I’ve heard him say this at least three times in the past few weeks (I swear I try not to watch him but he’s always on MSNBC) This “they can win” stuff (of course they could win theoretically) is Tweety’s way of digging at the president like he kept doing when he was pimping his JFK book. It’s like he’s saying that PBO is such a failure that the Cons should be competitive. This is total garbage coming from racist Tweety. PBO has done a phenomenal job as president and the Cons have absolutely nothing to offer but hate and incompetence.

I am really tired of Chris Mathews and his disrespect of the president. I ‘m certain if PBO was white, CM would not be spewing this nonsense. I truly believe this and I’m white, btw. F that lying Tweety.

I remember his endless blathering in 08′ about how then candidate Obama could never win PA because of the “rural white voters”. Tweety just loved that. Haha, PBO ended up winning PA against McCain. Now, I loved that.

Saw a clip today that showed why Ann Romney said she was going to speak for Romney from now on. I had seen that clip before but had not seen what preceded that comment as I did today. Her husband introduced her as his heavy weight secret weapon or some such phrase. I do remember the heavy weight part. He caught himself in midstream saying he didn’t mean it the way it sounded. Apparently he has problems with saying unthinkable things in his own life too as who would call their wife their heavy weight weapon? I know if my late husband ever called me that in public or private I’d be a weapon alright but he would be on the receiving side.

Anne, well she’d probably go along just to keep Mitten’s paws off her.

why does Romney’s eyes always looked red-rimmed like he had a big cry right before he came out?

    • March 6, 2012 at 9:56 pm

Since it’s not fashionable in high society to hold his nose, he’s holding his breath so he won’t breathe the same air as the sweaty masses. The build up seeps out through his eyeball sockets, thus the redness.

I really think there is something wrong with Mitt Romney. How is it possible to have someone running to be the leader of the free world and everything he says or quotes is a lie? He just makes stuff up. And he lies with such ease? This is so dangerous. He is a pathological liar and I think he needs help. This is not normal. I have no idea what Romney stands for and on top of that I don’t believe a word he says about anything. The thought of him being anywhere near the White House is just horrifying.

      • 338 Obama Grandmama

I have said before that I think Mitt is a pathological liar too. I think it is dangerous in that the person lies about absolutely everything without even having a reason to lie. It goes into not even knowing they are lying. How would foreign leaders ever believe anything he says? I am amazed how many of our own believe him.

    • March 6, 2012 at 10:51 pm

Caught part of Romney’s speech tonight and noticed something wierd – what’s up with all the rapid eyelid blinking? That’s AWESOME.

And it’s my wish for all the 1% who mock everyone else, and have no clue.

      I want them to –

      – not have bus fare.
      – worry about paying rent/mortgage and not know if they’ll be evicted.
      – have to choose between medicine and their next meal.
      – not be able to find a job that pays all their expenses.
      – live paycheck to paycheck and still have to do without things because they don’t make enough to cover the basics.
      – know what it’s like to eat a lot of Ramen.
      – understand what it’s like to be homeless.

I want them to understand we are all our brothers’ keeper.

Eventually I want them all to really understand what Jesus meant by, “What you do to the least of your brothers, you do to me.” As well as the entirety of The Sermon on the Mount.

I want them to be ashamed in their hearts and know that President Obama walks the walk of a student of Christ, and that they are more like the hypocrites Mathew speaks of in 6:5.

http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/03/06/438790/santorum-single-mothers/ In 1994….wonder if he feels the same today?

“What we have is moms raising children in single-parent households simply breeding more criminals,” he said. When Santorum wasn’t comparing single mothers to animals, he still pressed the issue of out-of-wedlock births and crime. He told the Philadelphia Inquirer in 1994 that “we will never solve the crime problem unless we solve the welfare problem. They are deeply intertwined.” […]

If Rick Santorum wins Ohio, does he just get bragging rights for winning the state or a lot of delegates too?

    • March 6, 2012 at 10:17 pm

Santorum didn’t qualify for delegate counts in some counties in OH, so he may win popular vote and therefore “bragging rights” but Romney may still win the most delegates.

    • March 6, 2012 at 10:50 pm

Brit, this article is much longer and has a detailed description of how Ohio delegates will be awarded. Santorum’s lack of organization will hurt him here.

      http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/03/rick-santorums-ohio-delegate-problems-pile-up/

In the three districts where Santorum did not submit a delegate slate at all, he will not be able to receive any delegates. In the six where he submitted only a partial slate, he is eligible to be awarded only the number of delegates he submitted, assuming he wins a particular district.
Chris Maloney, a spokesman for the Ohio Republican Party, said the leftover delegates will be considered “unbound” and the campaigns will be able to file a petition with the state party to claim them. Once such a petition is filed, Ohio GOP Chairman Kevin DeWine is required to impanel a “committee on contests” composed of three members of the Ohio GOP’s central committee to sort out the delegate awards.
What’s clear is that Santorum will be competing in Ohio on Tuesday handicapped by the fact that he is ineligible to receive nine delegates and perhaps as many as nine more, or more than one-quarter of the state’s delegates.

What’s clear is that Santorum will be competing in Ohio on Tuesday handicapped by the fact that he is ineligible to receive nine delegates and perhaps as many as nine more, or more than one-quarter of the state’s delegates…..

ok wow, Martin Bashir was hilarious just now on MSNBC. Ya’ll should get the video.

He called Mitt Romney the “Prince Charles” of the Republican party.

He’s next in line to sit on the throne, but people in UK would rather his sone Prince William take the throne than Prince Charles.

It seems weird, but the way Bashir analyzed it was awesome!

    Yikes!

  134. March 6, 2012 at 11:00 pm

I’m beginning to think that the last OH vote numbers are taking so long because they are trying to “find” enough votes to put Romney over the top.

How can they give vote totals to reporters, but not the state elections dept?

Oh and I like Steve Schmidt he seems to be genuine, but I think he was being a loyal GOP when he said that even if it really close in OH but Romney “wins” then Romney still goes ahead to the next contest with the wind at his back.

It’s amazing what you can rationalize when you want your team to win.

  135. March 6, 2012 at 11:01 pm

Mo’money’s is going to pull out Ohio and win, but not by enough to make it feel brag worthy. St. Torum gets the bragging rights cause this was a must win for Mitty. Oh well, are the primaries over yet? Can we just proceed to the general, just annoit somebody and get on with it.

Happy Super Tuesday folks! I can’t believe it has been 4 years since I became an Obamabot. 😆 Until Super Tuesday 08, I had assumed that Hillary would be the nominees, and that I would be able to cast a vote for her in November, against the Republican. As a woman, I thought it would be great to cast a vote for the first national female nominee for President. She was familiar, if not a bit *too* familiar in my mind ( I had more than a bit of concern about about the idea of 20+ straight years of alternating Bush/Clinton executive power). I knew Sen. Obama had potential, but I honestly didn’t think he would be able to overpower the Clinton Machine, at least not in 2008. When he did so well that night, I paused and let reality fall in; Barack Hussein Obama may be the nominee. It was an almost giddy realization, and I wouldn’t even let my mind go to a possible “President Obama” at that point. I listened to his victory/stump speech, and I nodded in full agreement. For the first time, I felt I was seeing a person and a movement that spoke directly to people like me. I felt like he was someone I could be FOR, instead of just voting AGAINST someone in an election. The next 9 months was such an adventure, and I became a complete political junkie. Nothing will be able to duplicate the emotion of that time, but now I am proud to be a supporter of the most successful and productive president of my lifetime.

Speaking of Obama, have you guys seen this video. It’s Chris Rock, trying out new material in LA, and talking about going to the President’s 50th B-day party. Warning, typical Chris Rock language:

As far as I’m concerned, Romney was the biggest loser of the evening – when you consider the amount of $$$ that he spent and how the media was readly declare him the nominee after he swept all the races tonight. He’s been weakened going to the next primary this Saturday where it will be mostly Southern States, and Santorum might win most of them.

Sorry if this was mentioned upthread, just joined in & was cracking up @ Martin Bashir. Totally paraphrasing here. He said that Mittens is the Prince Charles of the R’s, wanting it for so long, desparate to succeed to the throne but people would rather have Prince William. Mitts is emasculated by his past, can’t convince anyone, and the longer this goes on, people become less interested. He’ll go battered & bruised & fall over the finish line , and then have to face POTUS. Martin! Dude!

Here’s The Woman Rush Limbaugh Is Attacking Today; ‘Totally Bizarre,’ She Says

Limbaugh spent the entire first hour of his program today discussing “The American Way of Eating,” a new book by journalist Tracie McMillan, who logged almost a year working low-paying jobs at Wal-Mart, Applebee’s and other places to learn about the food industry. Despite the backlash he’s faced for branding law student Sandra Fluke a “slut” and “prostitute,” Limbaugh didn’t shy away from the matter of McMillan’s sex. On the contrary, he referred to her as an “authorette” and attempted to tie her to a broader trend of “all these young single white women” who are threatening Americans’ freedoms.

She just said Alaska does not have an accent like how she talks and I can testify to that having lived there for ten years. WASHINGTON — Vice President Joe Biden is stepping up his efforts to help President Barack Obama win re-election, kicking off a series of speeches in states critical to the Obama campaign.
Biden will speak at four events in the coming weeks on key issues in the presidential campaign, including an address next week in Ohio, a campaign official said Tuesday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss campaign strategy.
The vice president has been a top surrogate for Obama, appearing at fundraisers around the country and courting voters in battleground states like Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire. The speeches are expected to mark a more pronounced role by Biden in the campaign as Republican presidential contenders compete in primary contests this spring.
