Sandra Fluke on Twitter

“He encouraged me and supported me and thanked me for speaking out about the concerns of American women. What was really personal for me was that he said to tell my parents that they should be proud and that meant a lot because Rush Limbaugh questioned whether or not my family would be proud of me.”

Obama calls Sandra Fluke, Georgetown law student assailed by Rush Limbaugh

“He encouraged me and supported me and thanked me for speaking out about the concerns of American women,” Fluke told Mitchell of the call with Obama. “And what was really personal for me was that he said to tell my parents that they should be proud. And that meant a lot because Rush Limbaugh questioned whether or not my family would be proud of me. So, I just appreciated that very much.”

The call by Obama is a rare one and a move that signals the White House, like Democrats more broadly, is intent on keeping the spotlight on the contraception issue.

This reaching out to Sandra Fluke by PBO was a beautiful express of his concern for her as a father as well as president. The Washington Post didn’t have to politicize it by saying it’s a ‘signal’ that the president wants to keep the spotlight on the contraception issue. HE isn’t doing that, the right wing doofuses are. He’s responding to a young person who was publicly slandered by a woman-hating pig who happens to have a radio audience. This is PBO from the heart and it doesn’t have to be trivialized by beltway media. They can take any beautiful act and turn it into ugly. I love that he said her parents should be proud of her. They raised a courageous, intelligent women and should be bursting with pride.

This is ABC news headline: “Culture War Update: Obama Joins the Fray Sparked by Rush Limbaugh” I hate the media. They are ascribing ulterior motives to the President. A man raised by his mother and grandmother. A man who has two young daughters. A man who has led a life of empathy and grace. It can’t be that he genuinely cares about Miss Fluke. They have to sully it, like they do everything else. I despise the media.

Really are any of you surprise at what the media does? The fact is President Obama call this young lady and told her to hold her head up high, she has done nothing wrong. Her parents have every reason to be proud of Mr. Fluke. I hope Ms. Fluke don’t let some lowlife four time marry, racists , drug addict get her down. Bravo to our President.

Thank you Jackie G for this comment! I am so sick of the media always politicizing every thing the President does. The President didn’t have to call Sandra Fluke “to keep the spotlight on the contraception issue.” The Republican are already doing that by introducing bills, such the Blunt Amendment. The WP is projecting here! It’s the post that is out trying to drum up more controversy on the issue. A humane gesture by the President to reach out to a young and courageous woman, who was maliciously slandered by a powerful media person, is framed as being politically motivated so as to suggest that both sides are guilty! I tell you. I am really sick of the media in this country!

    • March 2, 2012 at 3:36 pm

I’ve had about five petitions come through my inbox and signed them all, except the one from Daily Kos, which I couldn’t bring myself to click on. Women of all ages need to see what the Republican mentality really is. You are less than human to them and they will only tolerate you if you do their bidding without complaint. This is the bellowing of the last dinosaurs as the sink into the primeval mud. Their pre-Stone Age mentality cannot be tolerated in the 21rst century. They must be soundly and permanently defeated.

It’s gone beyond poison, PJ. It’s one thing to go after a politician or a public figure. But this was a young woman–a private citizen–speaking about a friend. It’s abusive and vile in a way that should disqualify him from being on the public airwaves.

No, I don’t see — can any woman on this board, of ANY age, imagine crawling into bed with that disgusting pile of blubber? No amount of money could overcome the nausea.

I will be trying to put a video together with both women and men saying the following:
“Hi my name is ______, and according to Rush Limbaugh I am a slut”
“Hi my name is ______, and according to Rush Limbaugh my wife is a slut”

I would fight(in my own way) anyone who would call anyone of them a “Slut”. So my heart is full with love and respect for this beautiful and intelligent young lady, Sandra Fluke and all of the lovely daughters she is respresenting on her campus and all over this nation.

Let us give support to POB for stepping up and out on his classy, beautiful man, beautiful son, beautiful husband, beautiful father, and beautiful President of these United States self like no other President in my lifetime has had the courage to do. What an honorable man.

We should have a thread of “Honor Our Lovely, Courageous, and Compassionate Young Ladies.” I taught young people, and I saw how demeaning and very painful some of the junior high young ladies were so crush when the boys would call them ugly and hateful names. It matters. I had no tolerance for that, and I stepped up to the plate for these young ladies many times, but I Never allowed the young men to get away with the pain they had inflicted upon these wonderful young ladies. I spoke to the young men about their actions, and I NEVER not step up to the plate to do so. We must stand together for young women to come.HZ

Obama warns against pre-emptive Iran strike

US President Barack Obama has said it would be unacceptable for Iran to have a nuclear weapon, but warned against a pre-emptive strike on the country.

He told The Atlantic magazine he was not bluffing by threatening US action if Iran built a weapon but that an early strike could win Iran sympathy.

These two situations, Israel and Iran, and Sandra Fluke sum up President Obama wonderfully. The words of encouragement he gave to Ms. Fluke and the sternness shown towards Israel and Iran. His speech to AIPAC on Sunday will be very interesting, if Israel has any thoughts on attacking Iran, they had better think long and hard before they attack. The GOP’s new emphasis on rising fuel costs actually speaks to President Obama’s improving political position

For just about anyone who drives a car, the soaring cost of fuel is a source of real distress. It’s also a very real source of worry for Barack Obama’s political team, and a very obvious weapon for his Republican opponents to wield against him.

And yet, the fact that the GOP is now focusing so aggressively on gas prices is actually a sign of how significantly the political environment has improved for Obama since last fall.

    Afternoon all.

There was a Monty Python skit called “Upperclass Twit of the Year.” I present it here for your amusement.

As you can see, the twits win by being the first to shoot themselves in the head.

That’s what we’re seeing in the right wing right now. On issue after issue, they’re doubling down, becoming more outrageous — shooting themselves in the head. And they have to. The rhetoric that’s spewed out of their mouths for the past 3 years leaves them no wiggle room; either they push on, or they get exposed as the hucksters they are. I for one am loving the spectacle of a sex tourist gasbag digging his own grave. Ms. Fluke is made of stern stuff, and I applaud her for not backing down, and fighting a fight she didn’t seek out.

Hi, COS – just finding out the news myself. Love the fact the sponsors are ditching that creep, after hearing from everybody. I’m so sorry Ms. Fluke had to suffer through this, but she’s smart and mature enough to know it will have been almost worth it.

OMG!! Mrtin Bashir (sp) just put out anb APB for Newt Grinch. He said look for a funny looking rotund man, traveling with a much younger woman and to be on the look out in coffee and food shops. That was hilarious!

OMG!!! Martin Bashir is killing me. Not only does he skewer the GOP with truth, he puts out an APB for one Newton Leroy Gingrich

APB: Look out for a funny looking rotund man with a much younger woman whose hair looks like an uncooked french dessert. Be sure to look out for them in coffee shops and food shops.

    😆 😆 😆 😆

You know what’s interesting about all of this though. Where was all of this condemnation of Limbaugh when he called Mrs. Obama fat (or whatever vile words he used to desribe her). And I don’t remember much hoopla from the media when Glenn Beck was insulting then 11 year-old Malia (he’s out of a job now right?). He’s been utterly offensive for many years I wonder why this was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

It seems as if after Limbaugh has attacked blacks, hispanics, the poor, children and the elderly for over 3 years people are finally waking up with this whole birth control battle.

Jessica – and debbyeOh – I agree with both of you. Just happened to think, also, that the Rutgers women and now Ms. Fluke are not public figures, so maybe that’s why the uprising about both. Even though we know Mrs. Obama and her children should be treated with the same respect as women and kids not in the public eye, some of these awful people think there’s a difference.

I’m still waiting for an influential Repub woman to speak out. Whether in business, politics, or clergy, surely there’s one that has soemthing to say. I’m looking at you Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Dr. Condieleeza Rice, Meg Whitman, $arah Pay’em, etc

Where is our lazy, sloppy media to pose the question to them?

If this was a Dem situation that would be chasing them around the town with a camera and a mic to get a response but the Repubs ALL get a pass.

      • March 2, 2012 at 4:18 pm

I’m thinking the pub women are all in hiding….with strict instructions from their apeman to get back in the kitchen and stay quiet until we give you something to say. I imagine Frank Lutz is working overtime, on how to talk about this. It’s gotta be focused group you know.

Yes Indeed, Donna dem 4 Obama! Where are the media? Why aren’t they asking GOP leaders, both men and women, to publicly state their position on Limbaugh’s vile remarks slandering a young woman, whose only crime was to speak out in the cause to protect the health of all women who rely on contraceptives for a variety of health reasons?

Dr. Rice could have done so much more with her intelligence and hard work instead she uses her voice to defend Bush and his horrible legacy. She could have been an excellent role model for success, especially for black women but it’s ok we have Michelle Obama and Oprah.

The fact that the ones you have identified, cookemom, haven’t spoken up, speaks volumes about the lack of character among the GOPers. These are the people David Brooks was talking about when he used the word “possum republicans” in an article earlier this week. They’re too cowardly to tell people like Limbaugh to knock it off. Boehner and Cantor have issued statements, but they shouldn’t have because they leave much to be desired and are far from being apologies to Ms. Fluke or condemnations of Limbaugh’s behavior.

“So now come the updates after all: John Boehner “obviously believes the use of those words was inappropriate,” emails a Boehner spokesman; and Eric Cantor, also through a spokesman, says “It’s not language the majority leader would condone.”

    President Obama called Sandra Fluke?

Well, I think I’m going to cry. He makes us all so connected … so “we’re all in this together” for the rest of the country.

Thank you, Mr. President, and thank you, Ms. Fluke!

    • March 2, 2012 at 4:20 pm

yes it was touching. I was watching Andrea Mitchell right after Sandra received the call in the green room, waiting to come on air. She was visibly shaken and her voice shook when she talked about her telling her parents to be proud of her.

In one of his more solemn duties, President Obama visited with more than two dozen wounded warriors today, and awarded eight Purple Hearts.

The White House did not permit news or photo coverage of the president’s visit to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.

Officials later reported that Obama met with 27 wounded service members — 11 Soldiers, 14 Marines, one Sailor and one NATO Forces Member.

RALEIGH — First Lady Michelle Obama today stumped across North Carolina for her husband’s re-election, saying the presidential contest would offer a clear choice about which party cares about the struggling middle class.

Appearing at fundraisers in Raleigh and later in Charlotte, Obama’s appearances marked an intensification of the presidential campaign in North Carolina, a state that both parties see as critical in the fight for the White House.

“The choice we make will determine nothing less than who we are as a country, but more importantly who do we want to be,” Obama told about 600 people in packed fundraising luncheon in a ballroom the Raleigh Marriott City Center.

“Who are we?” she asked. “Will we be a country where opportunity is limited to only a few at the top? Or will we be a place if you work hard you can get ahead no matter who you are or how you started out.”

What’s at stake on Super Tuesday
    By Jonathan Bernstein

Even if you believe that Mitt Romney is almost certain to be the nominee — as I do — there’s still plenty at stake in the Washington caucuses tomorrow and the 10 Super Tuesday states on March 6th. Can end the hotly contested phases of the nomination contest now, and pivot to general election themes and unifying his party? Or will he have to spend many more weeks attacking Republicans and worrying about offending conservatives?

I’ll take the upcoming contests in three batches.

First Tier: Romney’s strongest states. These are Massachusetts, Vermont, the Idaho caucuses, and Virginia. This is the group that’s going to give Romney a good day, no matter what else happens. He’s going to win most or all of the delegates in these states, giving him a large lead on the day that the remainder of the contests probably won’t erase no matter how poorly he does in them. Something would have to go very wrong for him in these particular states to really put his eventual nomination in doubt.

    Bad Day for the Bully
    By Ed Kilgore

You never know with these things, but there are signs aborning that Rush Limbaugh’s two-day tirade against Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke may have been a very serious mistake. When the President of the United States goes to the trouble of personally calling the victim of a media bully to comfort her, the bully is getting into the kind of danger zone usually reserved for nasty tinpot dictators and perpetrators of heinous crimes. And when the Speaker of the House representing the party you have lorded it over for many years finds it necessary to denounce your behavior, you might want to consider a vacation of a trip to rehab.

Limbaugh has already lost one major sponsor (Sleep Train), and there’s quite a campaign underway to gather petitions to all his sponsors suggesting that might find a better use of their advertising dollars. So far all Rush has been able to muster is some spluttering at Obama for his Super-PACs accepting a big contribution from Bill Maher, and a half-hearted effort to play the victim himself, a role for which he is singularly ill-equipped.

  53. March 2, 2012 at 5:07 pm

In regard to Rush Limbaugh, I have been on the phone for hours calling sponsors off the list supplied by WiW. I got a few denials, but mostly the people on the other end were listening. I made it clear that sponsorship of such vile behavior would not be tolerated and that continuing to do so may affect their businesses in a very negative way. Several respondents mentioned that they had received calls and were aware of the situation. I hope the calls and petitions continue, so the sponsors take it as seriously as they should.
In addition to contacting the sponsors of the Limbaugh hate show, I think we should also demand a clear statement from all Republican officials and candidates. After all, Rush Limbaugh is such an important mouthpiece of the GOP that the public should assume that their silence equals condoning the attacks on all women. I called the office of Senator Scott Brown and made it very clear that something more than Speaker Boehner’s halfhearted mumble is required. Let them feel the heat – it’s nothing compared to what they will experience in November when all the “sluts” have their say at the polls.

Finallly a GNOP woman speaks out. Of course, now she’s no longer welcome in the NOPE party,

So what have the four GOP clowns said about Limbaugh’s comments? I imagine Rick Santorum agree with every word Limbaugh said. Poor Mitt don’t know what to say. But it is ashame how afraid the GOP leaders are of Limbaugh. Boehner, McConnell, Canter, all of them are afraid to say anything that might make Limbaugh mad.

We have an AWESOME PRESIDENT. Even his critics must recognize the decency and compassion of this man. When I listen to the commentary, I can hear the hollowness with which the #GOP and their supporters, try to make a case for this radioactive, reactionary #WarOnWomen. Some are strident in their defense, but they ‘protest too much’. It is the last, SUICIDAL, gasp of a dying party, and they will go down HARD. The political atmosphere will only get uglier, the protests louder and more strident, and perhaps, more dangerous for all who disagree with them. When their words (lies) no longer work, they will use force. They will pray on the ‘weak and defenseless’. Like all bullies (Khaddafi, Assad, et. al), they lash out in blind anger at their inevitable defeat.

Late to this train, but as a 72 year old woman I am SO proud of Sandra Fluke! She is putting herself on the line with grace and dignity. I’m so glad that the President called her with encouragement and compassion. He is a president who truly respects women. My husband has said for years…..how can any man who has a wife, or a daughter or a sister, not want them to be treated equally? How can any man talk about women like Rush does??? So,I know not only women are upset, but real men are mad and upset too.
So glad to see the boycott beginning to take off!!! Money is what talks.

Carolyn, your husband is absolutely right! I have a daughter and several nieces who are Sandra Fluke’s age. I also have sisters and I was raised by strong women that included my mother, grandmother and precious aunts.

I am proud of Sandra Fluke for standing up for the rights of women to be in charge of their health needs. She reminds me of my daughter (now in Graduate School) who is committed to fighting for the rights of women.

Good evening everyone. I had to come out of my Lurking mode this evening to stand with Miss Fluke. She is a brave young woman, one who is willing to stand up for what she believes in. As a woman, mother and wife I am proud of her and I know that her Parents are very proud of her. I was in tears listening to Miss Fluke talk about PBO and the conversation she had with him, this very loving and caring man I am sure felt her pain. ( I would like to claim him for my Island home) .

This issue certainly deserves coming out of lurking, if ever an issue deserved it. Thanks for sharing your point of view! I was also in tears listening to Ms. Fluke earlier today when she mentioned that the President told her that her parents should be proud of her. She was clearly moved, and it also showed that this unwarranted and offensive attack from Limbaugh has hurt her, as it would any human being. I’m so glad the President reached out to her – it clearly meant a lot to her.

Ms. Fluke has been completely impressive throughout this whole ordeal. We couldn’t have asked for a better spokesperson for this issue.

Sandra Fluke has indeed been such a wonderful representation of all that is best about America…

Smart, articulate, decent, calm and incredibly lovely…

What a testament to her family…

Her parents ought to be proud…

They raised a wonderful human being…
