James Fallows (The Atlantic): … but then he gets a chance to sing at the White House tonight, doing Sweet Home Chicago with Mick Jagger and also B.B. King?? Jeesh, talk about being the most powerful man in the world.

…. The guy does have a charm that is hard to imagine the Santorums or Romneys ever matching ….  for extra enjoyment check out the shots of White House chief of staff Jacob Lew bopping in the background. A real hep cat, for sure!

AP: A surging Rick Santorum is running even with Mitt Romney atop the Republican presidential field, but neither candidate is faring well against President Barack Obama eight months before Americans vote, a new survey shows.

Obama tops 50 percent support when matched against each of the four GOP candidates and holds a significant lead over each of them, according to the Associated Press-GfK poll….

….. Obama holds an 8-point lead over Romney, 9 points over Santorum and 10 points over Gingrich or Paul…. Notably, the survey showed the president dominating among independents, a group central to Obama’s 2008 victory, whose support for him had faltered in recent months. According to the poll, 6 in 10 independents would choose Obama over any of the Republicans.

Marquette: President Barack Obama leads each of his Republican rivals in Wisconsin, according to the new Marquette Law School Poll. Obama leads former Senator Rick Santorum 51 percent to 40 percent and leads former governor Mitt Romney by 53 percent to 38 percent. In January, Obama’s lead over Romney was 48 percent to 40 percent. The president holds a 52 percent to 36 percent lead over Rep. Ron Paul and a 56 percent to 33 percent margin over former Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Charles Pierce: It should be A Very Special Episode, this Wednesday night’s season finale of the 1,329,465,771.5 Republican debates. They should invite the whole cast back, all the people who left the show for their own spinoffs, the way they brought Rhoda and Phyllis back when Mary Richards got fired at WJM. Look, here’s Herman Cain, and there’s Michele Bachmann, and there’s Rick Perry, stumbling and falling into the potato salad. And there’s the formerly invisible Jon Huntsman. Who knew he was so tall?

Steve Benen: Last week, the House Oversight Committee, led by Chairman Darrell Issa, held a one-sided hearing on contraception access, featuring an opening panel of five conservative men – and no one else. Democrats on the committee had invited a witness, Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke, but Issa refused to allow her to participate.

House Dems aren’t taking “no” for an answer …. Nancy Pelosi announced Tuesday that a Democratic panel will meet this week to hear testimony from just one witness: Sandra Fluke….

…. There was, however, an unexpected twist yesterday afternoon … the Republican-controlled Committee on House Administration has refused to allow the hearing to be televised ….. what is it, exactly, about Fluke’s perspective that has Republicans so concerned? The law student wants to share the story of a classmate who lost an ovary due to an ailment that could have been treated with birth control.

Russ Feingold says he was glad that Obama got Anwar Al-Awlaki. What makes this so great is that Feingold is one of Cenk’s and other professional lefts hero’s. I too like Feingold but wished he wasn’t always so ideological.

    This is Mitt Romney

    by BooMan
Tue Feb 21st, 2012 at 08:07:37 PM EST

Based on the January filings with the FEC, Barack Obama has raised more money from small donors (those giving under $200) than Mitt Romney has raised in total. Romney has raised 90% of his money from big donors (those giving more than $200). Without the Super PACS this would be completely disastrous because big donors can only give so much to the campaign and then they are capped out, while Obama can keep going back to his small donors for more. Romney can get around that limitation thanks to the Supreme Court’s outrageous decision in the Citizens United case, but that doesn’t mean he’s not in trouble. The truth is that Romney’s campaign is rapidly going broke.

The Romney for President committee spent nearly $18.8 million against more than $6.5 million raised in January, and it reported $7.67 million cash on hand as of the month’s end.

At that rate, by the time February is done, Romney will be selling IOU’s to the Chinese to keep his campaign going. By comparison, the president has $96 million in cash on hand and no immediate need to use any of it. And, as I’ve noted, most of his donors are in position to give several more times before they’re maxed-out.
    …………………………………………………………
If you’ve spent the last four years surfing in the liberal blogosphere, you might be under the misimpression that Obama’s base is disillusioned and won’t respond the same way they did in 2008. It’s simply not true.

Found this in this month’s Town & Country:

    JEWELRY BOX DIPLOMACY

It was Andrew Jackson who first planted a magnolia tree on the White House lawn, with a sprout from a tree near his Tennessee home. THat Jacksonian impluse to reuse and recycle is alive and well. Jewelry designer Kara Ross has been commissioned to create wood cuffs and trays to be presented as gifts by the Obamas to visiting heads of state and their spouses. The pieces – the bracelets are inscribed with the First Lady’s name, the trays with the President’s – are made from wood that has fallen from the White House trees.

TOP DIPLOMAT — Hillary Clinton tomorrow begins a four-nation trip to London and North Africa, the State Department announced yesterday. In Tunisia, Clinton will meet with “Friends of Syria,” a group of nations that support the Syrian opposition movement. Key question: Will they start mapping out a plan for arming the rebels?

Clinton’s trip comes as the White House and State Department are engaging in a coordinated messaging campaign to open the door to possible military assistance in Syria, the Associated Press reported. “We don’t want to take actions that would contribute to the further militarization of Syria,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said. “But we don’t rule out additional measures.” http://bit.ly/zHTMyk

    Watergate Manufacturing, Inc.

    by Zandar

As Steve Benen notes, pretty much everything is “Obama’s Watergate” to Republicans: going on vacation, eating a hamburger, brushing his teeth, and he possibly may have farted once HISTORY’S GREATEST MONSTER ahem sorry. This week’s Watergate, according to the American Spectator, is…Media Matters.

    No, really.

They’re comparing the paranoid President Nixon’s private investigators hired to find anything they could on his political opponents to…a media watchdog group. See, a media watchdog group that calls out Republicans on their lies HAS to be working for President Obama, who HAS to have an “enemies list” just like Nixon! Q.E.D.!

And former Reagan official Jeffrey Lord spends 8 pages on this tortured logic. Well, really, he spends 5 and a half pages rehashing Watergate itself, and the rest on that bastion of journalistic freedom, Tucker Carlson, and his hit jobs on Media Matters at the Daily Caller.

Republicans Losing Interest in Presidential Race
A new Associated Press-GfK poll finds nterest in the Republican presidential race is slipping: Just 40% of Republicans say they have a great deal of interest in following the contest, compared with 48% in December.

Key findings: Only 23% are strongly satisfied with the field and 40% said they are dissatisfied with the candidates running.

The chickens are coming home to roost in regards to Santorum and the entire Republican establishment is running scared. What did they expect? For years they’ve been using these cultural wedge issues to dummify their base and turn them into of millions of moralizing McCarthyites. Everybody that is not a true believer is an enemy of the Republic.

Well guess what? Now they have a true believer who has a real shot at winning the nomination. He’ll give the base all the red meat they can handle and in the process drive the entire party over a cliff.

    Happy landings.

They all lie. It would be bad enough if they just stood flat footed and said “this is what we believe”. But noooooooooooo, that’s not good enough. They have to tell endless lies about the President. I don’t care if they lie about each other, but when they lie about the President, that’s a bridge too far.

      • February 22, 2012 at 10:59 am

Yep. They want a two faced phony to have the right to lose to The President not a genuine basket case who’s running for archbishop.

    • February 22, 2012 at 9:58 am

The real problem for the Republican Party is that even if Romney gets the nomination (which I still think he will) they will still have to give a prominent speaking part to Santorum at the convention. In th 90’s they were able to keep Buchanan out of the spotlight. But Santorum has too big a following which won’t let him be bypassed at the convention. And we know that Santorum won’t stop spilling his toxic waste just because the party honchos tell him to.

This means that the whole country will get to witness first hand just how crazy the Republican Party has become.Unlike 2008, I don’t expect the Republican nominee to get a convention bounce. If anything, there might be the reverse effect.

      • February 22, 2012 at 11:03 am

A prominent speaking role guarantees he will totally upstage Romney and get the loudest and longest applause at the convention. Something that will damage Mitt as badly as any of his past present and future gaffes.

Good morning Ms Chips and TOD family. Well ,I had a ball, danced away for Carnival in Trinidad, and I have literally spent this Ash Wednesday morning, after massaging my entire body of course, catching up on all this good stuff. Slowly getting back on track after all the fun. You know, it would really augur well for those intense and uptight repugs to free-up and release their craziness in a festival as Carnival. I feel it would somehow give them an entirely new perspective,if that is at all possible!

    • February 22, 2012 at 10:41 am

Sounds like you had a great time. Love hearing about the tropics here in snowy Montana. I think any of the Repubs letting loose at a Carnival is not a possiblity. They all have sticks up their butts.

    Hello everyone,

    Long-time lurker first time poster.

I was looking for a longer version of the SAn Fran Chinatown restaurant video when I stumbled onto this video from ’08 during the campaign when PBO and Biden stopped by a Restaurant in Indiana for an impromptu stop and visit and had some artichoke dip.
It was more informal back then (I guess the Secret service were not yet super-hardasses on the security front yet)

Great to see them both interacting with the people and particularly with the older folk (Joe especially seems to be enjoying it – we don’t get to see that many videos of him interacting with people like we do PBO).

Oh and scroll to 8.10 for our first clue at a future Mr. Baby Whisperer.
Maybe this video had once been posted before here on TOD in any case I thought it would be an interesting walk down memory lane.
    Enjoy:

By the way does anyone know if it’spossible to find the video to the Great Eastern Restuarant in San Fran? I saw the full length thing back at the time but didn’t save the link and now I wish I did.
Also if anyone knows if there was a video of his stop at the Elementary school kids in Medina Washington, that would be great too.

My Indy daughter makes all these CDs for us, trying to keep us current. She’s a music fanatic, sings with a band on the weekend, teaching h.s. math her day job, but she always includes a bunch of these same artists on her CDs—-lots of Keb Mo and Trombone Shorty and Susan Tedeschi etc., so I wanted her to see our very own President Obama could do it too. Also have a Sweet Home Chicago daughter who said she saw it and was singing along. Ct. daughter said no need to send the vid as it’s on every single TV news program this morning.

The #ObamaSings meme is born? The president’s reelection campaign tweeted the footage of Obama singing “Sweet Home Chicago” with BB King and Buddy Guy at the White House Tuesday night, linking the tweet to the campaign’s official Tumblr, which posted the video last night along with (seemingly) the rest of social media users.

“There was a moment in Madison at one of the first big rallies, tens of thousands of people were out, and in the distance you heard bagpipes. I want to tell you, it was as good as any movie you have ever seen. The crowd began to part, and through the middle of it came uniformed firefighters with their bagpipes. They marched to the stage and one of their leaders, Mahlon Mitchell, stepped to the stage and he said, “Firefighters are taught that when there’s an emergency you don’t run away from it, you run to it. This is the emergency. They’re trying to burn down the house of labor, and we won’t let them do it.”

  45. February 22, 2012 at 5:11 pm

The Morning Joe panel should have cut to the chase, instead of letting Graham spout off his nonsense regarding President Obama’s religious affiliation. They should have told him, words don’t mean jack! Anyone can claim to be a follower of Christ, but we shouldn’t judge them by their words, we should judge them by their acts. Based on that and that alone, yes, President Obama is a Christian.

Not only because he says he is, but we must look at the man as a whole, and his life’s work thus far. From the time he was a community organizer, working to help the poor and disadvantaged; to some of the policies as Senator and President that he has fought for, and implemented. Not to mention his greatest achievement yet, his love, respect, and devotion to his wife and children. I’m not saying that folks who aren’t Christians can’t behave the same way, but this conversation centers around the doubt that’s being cast by the anti-Obama folks, regarding his faith.
