    A ‘uniquely terrible’ transportation bill
By Steve Benen – Wed Feb 15, 2012 11:30 AM EST.

As a rule, the details of massive transportation bills in Congress are dull enough to make reasonable folks’ eyes glaze over. But the one pending on Capitol Hill right now is not just another transportation bill.

Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHoog, a former Republican congressman, recently explained, “It hollows out our No. 1 priority, which is safety, and frankly, it hollows out the guts of the transportation efforts that we’ve been about for the last three years. It’s the worst transportation bill I’ve ever seen during 35 years of public service.”

A New York Times editorial called the legislation “uniquely terrible.”

One of the biggest criticisms of the President from the left, early on, was his willingness to bring Republicans into his cabinet, such as keeping Gates and nominating LaHood. LaHood, who comes from a part of Illinois that is full of the crazies, saw what was coming in terms of where the Republican Party was heading and retired from Congress. And he has been a stellar Secretary of Transportation and extremely loyal to the President and his policies. Another example of the President putting competency over ideology.

President Obama will have a major slot to fill at the World Bank this summer, with the institution’s current president Robert Zoellick announcing Wednesday that he’s stepping down on June 30th at the end of his five-year term.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Larry Summers, former Treasury Secretary and ex-Obama economic adviser, have been floated as candidates for the post, according to a recent Bloomberg report. The job does not require Senate confirmation.

The Washington, D.C.-based organization—which loans billions of dollars to developing countries—has been a plum assignment for political insiders since its creation after the end of World War II. The most recent presidents both hailed from the administration of George W. Bush. Zoellick, the former deputy secretary of State, replaced Paul Wolfowitz in 2007.

House Democratic leaders warned Wednesday that a bipartisan deal on the payroll-tax-cut package could be “a long ways” off.

The Democrats are praising the Republicans’ decision not to offset President Obama’s extended payroll-tax holiday, but cautioned that the GOP’s push to shorten the duration of emergency unemployment benefits — and offset that provision with cuts in federal pensions — could sink the deal.

A joint panel of the Maryland legislature approved on Valentines’s Day a bill to legalize same-sex marriage, adding to national momentum for gay nuptials following advances in California, New Jersey and Washington state over the last week.

Committee approval of Governor Martin O’Malley’s bill on Tuesday moves Maryland closer to becoming the eighth state to legalize gay marriage.

The House of Delegates’ Judiciary Committee and the Health and Government Operations Committee approved the measure 25-18 in a joint vote, a judiciary panel spokeswoman said. The measure is expected to go to the full House on Wednesday, she said.

24 Policies That Republicans Supported BEFORE They Were Against Them

    =========================================================

Since President Obama took the oath of office in January 2009, Republicans have reversed their stances on many different policies and beliefs. Here are 24 of them.
    .
    .
Undoubtedly, one could add even more to the list but now you know what policies Republicans once supported and why they are now against those very same policies. If we take Republican claims to love America and their claims that the Founders were Republicans seriously, we could also now say that Republicans were for America before they were against her.

Ha ha! I’m watching the House Budget Committee going over PBO’s budget (CSPAN3). The ‘Pubs are trying their best to grill acting budget director Jeffery Zients. He’s running circles around them, including their fair haired young whipper snapper Paul Ryan. My goodness is this the best they have to offer? He is challenging them on every step and blows their charts out of the water. It reminds me of when PBO took them to school back when they invited him to their little pow wow. And to think they want to get rid of the Dept of Education.

    • February 15, 2012 at 1:04 pm

Okay meeting just adjourned. Paul Ryan looks like he might have caught Walker’s stomach flu. All he can do is shake his head as he leaves the room.

Wow…you must have a strong stomach….I cannot even look or listen to most Republicans

      • February 15, 2012 at 1:08 pm

This one was a pleasure. DWS and Maryland’s Rep were there and made for a great tag team. It was a beauty to behold, cause they got nothin’. The new guy Zients kept taking them back to the Bush days of fail. He called them out for using charts that misrepresented the facts. They looked like kids caught with their hands in the cookie jar. I think I’ll go send in an atta boy for the job this guy did on his first trip to the chambers and as an acting director. If this was the interview, he gets the job imo.

Obama’s Winning The Wedge Issue II

Gallup finds the president’s standing among Catholics basically unchanged since the furor engineered by Benedict’s hand-picked reactionary bishops over contraception and the religious freedom of the hierarchy. It doesn’t surprise me. If the Bishops had picked abortion as their planned attack on the president, and he had somehow (inconceivably) fought back, this would be very very different. But the hierarchy picked the one issue – contraception – almost none of their flock agrees with them on. And notice how there seems little difference between the more devout Catholics and the less dedicated to attending Mass.

I think the revised compromise will help him even more – and the Bishops’ refusal to accept it will hurt them even more. And I think this will be particularly true among Catholics who, like me, regard abortion as far more morally troubling than contraception. Because many of us support contraception not just because we don’t think non-procreative sex is a sin, but because, for fertile heterosexuals, we think it lowers the rate and risk of abortion.

If you really oppose abortion, you should back contraception, especially for those women least likely to afford it outside health insurance plans. But the new rigid fundamentalism of the John Paul II and Benedict XVI hierarchy cannot allow such moral trade-offs. But trading off the rape of children for the reputation of the church? Suddenly they get pragmatic.

Was Romney’s Detroit Policy A Lemon?
Romney is still railing against the auto bailouts, long after his famous “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt” op-ed. The Economist pushes back:

Free-marketeers that we are, The Economist agreed with Mr Romney at the time. But we later apologised for that position. “Had the government not stepped in, GM might have restructured under normal bankruptcy procedures, without putting public money at risk”, we said. But “given the panic that gripped private purse-strings…it is more likely that GM would have been liquidated, sending a cascade of destruction through the supply chain on which its rivals, too, depended.” Even Ford, which avoided bankruptcy, feared the industry would collapse if GM went down. At the time that seemed like a real possibility. The credit markets were bone-dry, making the privately financed bankruptcy that Mr Romney favoured improbable. He conveniently ignores this bit of history in claiming to have been right all along.

Because he’ll say anything. He’s beginning to make Bill Clinton look like a pillar of honesty and candor. I too opposed the bailouts for the same reason as The Economist. And like its editors, I walked back my position after the amazing results came in.
