a word from tally: the gop’s war on women

The GOP’s War on Women, (and everyone else who isn’t them…)

This is long, but it’s imperative everyone understands this, so please read. In fact, go get a beverage……

The GOP is dangerous. I know that sounds alarmist, but I don’t say that lightly. For me to illustrate just how dangerous, I need to explain some basics.

First, how did so many Americans get so stupid?

[Chips raises her hand.] “I know Tally! Pick me! Pick me!”

Yes Chips?

The Republicans have been cutting Public Education funding for the last thirty years, and now globally, we’re ranked 14th for reading, 17th for science, and 25th for math!”

Excellent answer Chips! Correct. I love being surrounded by smart people!

We all pay taxes. Taxes go to millions of different things. No one person can specify where and how their tax contribution is spent. That is the government’s function.

Pretty much everyone has some form of insurance. If you drive a car, you have auto insurance. If you have a job, you pay into state disability and unemployment insurance programs. Even Social Security and Medicare are types of insurance. Even your taxes are a kind of insurance, and pay for Police and Fire departments, among a bazillion other things that most people take for granted.

The most important thing I learned since President Obama’s Birth Control Punking last Friday, is that 99% of America (and apparently 100% of the media), have ZERO knowledge of how insurance actually works……

when we did not have much choice….

Tally this is so clearly written is should be a primer for every member of Congress, every one who’s running for office and every voter. The depth of ignorance people have about what contraception is or isn’t and about insurance is really frightening. You’re so right to pin a lot of blame on the media, which seems literally incapable of understanding any topic they deal with.

Just to show the level of my own ignorance, can you tell me how self-insurance works for some companies? Some commenter said that the president’s solution wouldn’t work with companies that self-insure. But once again, the company itself doesn’t make medical/health decision.

I hope you can get a wider audience for this piece. Maybe Deaniac will welcome one more member of the TOD family.

Companies who self-insure are rare and have ridiculous amounts of money with which to do so. A lot of time it’s only for the owners/officers of the company. They also usually have a stop-loss cap (max the fund will pay per illness/employee), so the company won’t be bankrupted by one person’s cancer treatment. However, it you’re the person who has the cancer under this kind of plan, you might hit your cap, and be stuck not having enough funds to keep paying for the treatment you need.

            For more info – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-funded_health_care

I wouldn’t want to be insured by that kind of a policy.

I have a question. We get my 19yr old daughter birth control pills for her as she was having a period every 2 weeks, but my husband is still paying a co-pay of 20bucks a month. When he asked about the fact that the ACA said we don’t have to pay now, they said no, that’s not the case. How do I get the facts about this?

But I shouldn’t have to pay much for it and I should only pay what I THINK I should pay for it. Anyone that is NOT LIKE ME IS THE OTHER. THE OTHER is not LIKE ME and is NOT AMERICAN and is undeserving. America is just bigger, it’s still the same place as it was in 1958.

The Obama administration signaled that it is stepping up pressure on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to provide mortgage-principal reductions for holders of government-backed loans, a move strongly supported by congressional Democrats.

Housing Secretary Shaun Donovan said Thursday that the administration is considering taking “additional steps to make mortgage principal reductions available to Fannie and Freddie homeowners,” that go beyond recently announced incentives designed to spur a write-down of those home loans to bolster the housing market and economic recovery.

The head of Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac has been purposely refusing to implement any of PBO’s previous attempts at providing relief for millions of Americans. I saw an article where he said he was looking out for his share holders. His comments were so defiant and in your face. I didn’t even know they had shareholders. He has been the primary reason we haven’t gotten further along in dealing with this. I suspect he must have been a Bush mole? Will have to dig some to see what I can find out.

I tell you, what this president has had to deal with in the way of obstruction has been mind blowing.

      • February 12, 2012 at 8:34 pm

And yet, the House Democrats blame this President for not writing down Principal. People like Defazio and welcher, are selectively ignorant.

      • February 12, 2012 at 9:52 pm

Here’s an article about Edward Demarco, the FHFA – the overseer of Freddie and Fannie. He’s the final decider on what mortgages can be written down, and so far, he’s been uncooperative. I saw some movement, recently though. I think he’s getting a bit more pressure. The entire lack of progress on providing relief to homeowners of federal loans can be laid at his feet, in my opinion.

  17. February 12, 2012 at 8:03 pm

Tally, I LOVED the documentary of the Great Sperm Race! It’s wonderful.

I suppose most people on this forum had read about the two new child abuse scandals recently brought to light and now in the headlines — one in California, the other one in Wisconsin? Up there famous for beer anyway.

Are these bishops insane? How CAN they preach about morality with this stain all over their pristine robes? Speaking as a foster child from age 12 to 17, I can’t rage enough about the cruelty and piggishness of lechers having at hand a little girl all to themselves. This includes priests, with all the authority of the Church behind them. The fact that, apparently, none of these moral men had their heads crushed with a candle stick only shows the goodness and innocence of children. Perhaps also that they are small and, grown men, especially those decked out in brocade and satin, are many times bigger and stronger.

    • 65 majii
      February 12, 2012 at 9:08 pm

Another case has emerged in MA, too, Joan. These men have no shame. They should be focused on addressing these abuse cases instead of trying to control women’s access to contraception. They are willfully ignoring the stains on their so-called “pristine robes.” I think the faux uproar over the contraception mandate in the ACA is to deflect from the ongoing child abuse cases in the Church. I also think that the bishops have aligned themselves with the republicans, who are adding wood to this fire, to deflect from the fact that Congress has become very dysfunctional not because of PBO, but because of THEM. In this instance it seems like corrupt individuals seek out other corrupt individuals.

You bring so much knowledge and insight to this forum. You’re not only a fierce advocate for PBO and women, you’re also a fierce advocate for so many others. Thanks!!!

Thank you Tally, and ChipsChica for posting it. This is exactly what I have been saying. I even tweeted it earlier. PBO saved the priests’ face by doing this. As he said in his announcement, he has worked with churches and see they good they do on a local level feeding, clothing, housing and caring for those in need.

He could have come out and said what ppl wanted him to say, ie to tell the priests to back off and stay out of politics & women’s vaginas or else kiss their religious exemption goodbye (i admit that was my preference), but he saw nothing was to be gained by this except to stoke the flames of division, so he was gracious and pragmatic and let them off easy.

You would think they would thank him and shut up but apparently they too are now listening to the GOP and their pundits. I love the collection plates notes idea by the way. I would almost consider stepping foot in a church just to do it, but could not bring myself to sit through the hypocrisy I’m bound to hear there.

One of many reasons why I have nothing to do with the church or religion.

The only thing they left out was to the extent the cervix/uterus assists in the process = more so than they mentioned. The physical contractions the uterus has when a female has an orgasm, actually forces the cervix down into the vagina where there should (hopefully) ne a freshlly placed pool of ready, active, racing sperm, and literally sucks them up into the uterus to help them on their journey.

So if you’re trying to get pregnant, timing is of paramount importance, as is making sure a female has an orgasm as soon AFTER the male as possible.

There was another documentary that actually showed the contractions of the uterus which was AWESOME, and made perfect sense. I wish I could find it……

  34. February 12, 2012 at 8:58 pm

Tally, excellent read. as is most of what you write. Oh what the heck, cross out most and make it all of what you write (unless it has to do with soccer). 🙂
A couple minor additions to what you wrote about how insurance works. There are some cases where the employer does pay the claim directly or where an organization, such as a union does. These are self-funded policies and they consist of two types. One is where the policy is administered by someone else, usually a large company like CIGNA. Then it is called an ASO client, meaning Administrative Services Only. CIGNA is not considered to be at risk as it really isn’t using it’s own money. It bills the employer for the cost of administering the policy and the amount of the claims that have come through. The employer, however, is able to dictate all terms of the coverage. Even someFederal guidelines and rules don’t apply to these policies, although all aspects of the ACA do apply.
The other self-funded type is one called self-administered. This is usually large unions or collectives. The claims come to them and they pay directly to the provider. There are some employers that fall into this category, but there are not a lot of them. The point being that in these cases it is not an insurance company per se that is paying the claim. It is important to note, however, that only the people actually involved in the processing of the claims have any ability to see what the claims are paid for.
Secondly, most large employers can dictate the terms of the policy, in terms of what is covered and what is not, including the formulary. Smaller employers have less ability to do so, as it is harder for an insurance company to assess approrpiate cost of the coverage due to the small size of the group.
The other thing is to expand on your point of there being a large pool. Let’s say I am a church and have purchased group insurance for my employees from CIGNA. (Full disclosure, the reason I use CIGNA is I used to work for one of their subsidiaries.) The policy I have purchased does not cover BC pills (and doesn’t have to according to the new law)nor does it cover abortions or sex change operations. So the church and its employees believe that the ,money they put in does not pay for any of those services. But it undoubtedly does unless it is one of the cases I mentioned above, and even the ASO accounts have money that go into a general fund. This is because CIGNA does write policies that cover those services for other employers. And all those payments come out of the general fund which includes the premiums from the church.
This is where the stupidity you talk about comes into play. Those people that were up in arms about abortion possibly being paid for with federal funds did not want their tax money to pay for abortions. However, what they didn’t realize is that the money they put into their insurance premiums undoubtedly does.

Actually, this is where the long term plan of the Republicans to keep the American people dumb and docile has actually worked against them.

If I were to win a lottery like that, first thing I would do -before claiming- it is have a lawyer create a trust. Otherwise the money not dispersed at time of death goes back to state. With a trust set up the correct way, if you die the money still pours into the trust, with the stated beneficiaries sharing in the holdings. Unless of course you opt for a one lump payment at a greatly reduced purse and ubber taxes.

Not that I have to worry about that…. LOL

And I would never tell anyone I won the lottery. I come up with some alternate story….. sold a treatment, inheritence, foreign residuals….. anything.

          I am with you Tally,

I play occasionally and dream of winning one day and what I would do. I would continue to work or volunteer, setup a trust, charities, and of course to OFA and to re-elect PBO and a host of “real” democrats. I would live debt free and simply…no fancy cars, clothes, jewelry or homes. I’d make sure my niece’s college education will be paid and still collect my social security when I turn 66!

Thank you Tally for this insightful piece of information that fits into every woman’s health situation in every location. My mother died when I was four years old from a botched abortion because back then, contraceptives were not available to women in my country. I will be fifty-two years next month; if only my mother had the option of contraceptives.

To you and all the bloggers on this site, thank you for standing strong in your support for women’s biological rights. From across the oceans, I am fighting right beside you in spirit and prayers. God bless you and your awesome president and first family.

    • February 12, 2012 at 10:36 pm

PWFO, what a terrible thing to have happened in your life at the age of four. And all because churches and politicians felt the need to dictate the reproductive processes of women. So many tragedies occurred because of this and so many blighted lives. I lost my father to cancer when I was five years old and I know how difficult it is to grow up without a parent you loved. I’m glad we’re all fighting together. It just astounds me that we’re fighting battles again that were fought and won decades ago.

PrayerWarriorforObama, your painful story about your mom is similar to what happened to my older sister who also passed away in 1965 because of a botched abortion. She was 23 years and in her first year of teaching. She was also a poet and dubbed in song writing. Because she was not married, having a child would have supposedly brought shame to her Christian family. I was nineteen at the time and I really looked at up to her. Like you, I truly believe that my sister would be around if she had the option of contraceptives; or if these holier than thou Christians didn’t teach that children born out of wedlock were illegitimate children-bastards they used to call them. I am sorry, but I totally reject the morality that interferes with the health of my daughter, nieces, cousins, and all the women in my extended human family.

OMG! Mitt might lose to the social conservative. Brokered convention anyone. Wolfe keeps saying, but what about Jeb? LOL!

    • February 12, 2012 at 9:57 pm

what is the danger of a Brokered Convention

      • February 12, 2012 at 10:25 pm

The biggest danger of a brokered convention is that it makes the candidate appear weak once he is nominated because he didn’t get to the convention as a clear favorite. People are being misleading when they say that another candidate who hasn’t been through the long vetting process we require as Americans can just swoop in and get the nomination. Brokering will most likely come down to horse-trading on the convention floor, each candidate trying to get the other candidate’s delegates to change their votes until someone finally gets enough to win the nomination. A true brokered convention can only happen if the majority of the delegates who arrive at the convention are not bound to a candidate when they arrive. Most of what you hear about now from the media about a brokered convention amounts to a GOP political wet dream where their white knight rides in to rescue them from their folly. Reagan arising from the dead perhaps.

and since reagan was mostly dead during his second term, they probably wouldn’t notice the change anyway.

jokes aside (briefly) i think i read here recently that the brokered convention scenario could not place a new candidate on the final ticket, due to the number of bound delegates already tied to current candidates. that however it may be brokered, it would still have to be one of the existing candidates, with some delegates already dedicated to them. did i dream that up, or is that correct?

thanks tine le for your wonky knowledge and helpfulness, always!

    Wonderful Read Tally.

I watched the various Sunday Morning Political Shows. I applaud Jack Lew and Bill Burton, both of whom did a great job articulating the Administration’s point of view. Peggy Noonan said the discussion ” . . . puts Obamacare forward again.” YESSSSSSSSS. She seemed to think that would be a bad thing for the President and Democrats. NOOOOOOOOOOOO Peggy. Every time we discuss the particulars of Obamacare (love this), the uninformed public has a teaching moment. The more they hear, the more they like Obamacare. In the parallel world, GOP true believer’s mistakenly think most of the country is in agreement with them. WROOOOOOOONG.

Pundits don’t seem to be concerned with what Women think. David Gregory, tool, interviewed Tony Perkins. No mention of an interview with a representative from the Catholic Health Association, or Catholic Charities. No mention of interviews with Men whose wives use/need contraceptives. Gregory and others seem only to concern themselves with the ‘Council of Bishops and the GOP vs the President’, false premise, which causes them to draw the most ridiculous conclusions. Apparently, the only question is whether President Obama is ‘an incompetent Moderate, or a dangerous idealogue.” Wow. Really?

The coming months will be brutal. When the GOP says we are in a fight for the soul of the country, they are right. However, they are wrong about the predicted outcome. The masks have fallen off. They are arrogant and full of hubris, and it is the ‘best’ thing that could have ever happened. The more they shout and scream their ‘victimhood’, the more unhinged they appear. I have never seen anything like it. I imagine this was the mood prior to the Civil War. Their ‘1984’ mentality–Black is White, Up is Down–has become more transparent. Every time they sensationalize an issue, the MSM jumps on it, and despite their best efforts to the contrary, some actual facts and information bleed through. People are being education, drip by drip. ‘The Medium’ is no long ‘The Massage’. The Internet-Social Networking-Twitter have changed EVERYTHING. The Media now brings the Message, but they no longer control it. The GOP has not adjusted. Most have not yet realized that the FAUX News Network has destroyed the Republican Party, with their lies and propaganda.

We are, in fact, in a true culture war. Will we continue to be controlled by religious intolerance and reactionary patriarchal regressiveness, or will we finally issue in the ‘Age of Enlightenment’. Out with the Age of Pisces the Fish (religious symbolism), and in the Age of Aquarius, “the Water Bearer, symbolically and eternally giving life and spiritual food to the world. The water from the vessel washes away the past, leaving room for a fresh, new start. The sign of Aquarius is forward-looking and growth-oriented. Concerned with equality and individual freedom, Aquarius seeks to dispense its knowledge, and its vision of equality and individuality, to all.”

Our President is the Man for our time. We’ve been looking for a Leader, and now we have one. He’s been waiting for us to step up. “We Are The One’s We’ve Been Waiting For. Remember? We never wanted or needed a ‘savior’. That was silly mythology created by the Right-wing propaganda machine and the Professional Left, and in their ‘1984-speak’, they claim it is our vision, not theirs.

The Progressive Train is Leaving the Station, either get on board or get left behind. It is time to make a choice and take a stand.

So nicely stated! Agreed. I say we HAVE to have this fight, and it’s one I welcome. They have been tinkering around the edges for so long, trying to take apart our country, our women, our immigrants, our seniors, our poor and less fortunate. Now there is no more hiding….they have made themselves perfectly clear who they intend to stand for, and it is NOT the majority of Americans.Let’s have this fight now….the country has moved ahead without them, but they continue to cling to a time that was neither idyllic or equal for so many. I stand with my President. He speaks for me. He can’t do this by himself. We must ALL have his back!

This is just spectacular writing. Your post is informative, insightful and a spot on analysis. I am sending this to everyone on my email list and asking them to spread it far and wide. Knowledge is power.

The depravity of the Republican Party knows no bounds, but this is an indictment of the mainstream media. They were accomplices in this contraception charade. They have abdicated their responsibility to educate and inform the public with the facts. In their glee to carry water for the GOP, journalistic integrity was thrown out the window. They are becoming more and more irrelevant with each passing day.

Tally, thank you for this post. I have been on fire about this because I agree with you that this is a matter of social control. I will be sharing this with others. We need to be vigilant and to be fighting back. This is why I was so adamant about folks reaching out to the WH this week to support their initial decision. We need to be prepared for this fight and we can’t let our allies take it on alone. This is about ALL of us as women in this country. The GOP is incredibly dangerous and this is not hyperbole. They simply are and if they get the WH this year, I am truly fearful about what they will push through. It is going to take a generation to undo what Bush Jr. unleashed in his 8 years in office. We are living with the fallout from those years and will be for some time to come. So thanks for this informative, cogent, and important post.

If GOP won the white house they would have up to 3 appointments to Supreme Court which means end of reproductive rights, possibly birth control (Griswold), end of workers’ protections, environmental law, civil rights, criminal injustice, regulations on corporations. Their ideal are young Scalias. President Obama is absolutely right that our future is at stake.

Only an idiot, or a programmed ideologue, can fail to grasp her crystal clear explanations of how insurance works and why what the Catholic Bishops, and their right wing enablers, are freaking about has absolutely nothing to do with contraception and insurance coverage; Rather, it has everything to do with controlling women’s sexuality.

Even in the ultrapolarized atmosphere of Capitol Hill, it should be possible to secure broad bipartisan agreement on reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act, the 1994 law at the center of the nation’s efforts to combat domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. The law’s renewal has strong backing from law enforcement and groups that work with victims, and earlier reauthorizations of the law, in 2000 and 2005, passed Congress with strong support from both sides of the aisle.

Yet not a single Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee voted in favor last week when the committee approved a well-crafted reauthorization bill introduced by its chairman, Senator Patrick Leahy, and Senator Michael Crapo, a Republican of Idaho, who is not on the committee.

“Basically, they don’t give two shits about women.End of conversation.”

That’s it in nut shell, desertflower! Sometimes I wonder: Do these Republicans have mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, or other female family members? How come Republican women who are members of Congress are missing in action? Are they so terrorized that they no longer have the guts to defend the interests of women? How in the world can any one, male or female, be against a law aimed at protecting women against violence? I was not going to go there, but what I read in the article you linked to led me to ask this question: What exactly is the difference between right wing Republicans and the Talibans when it comes to the rights of, and protections for, women?

By the way, DF, thank you so much for all the information you share with us. If I may add this.Be warned, it’s raw…..but, evil this big needs raw.

For people who are ruled by fear – fear of god, fear of hell…perhaps most honestly fear of being revealed as the horrid hypocrites they truly are…this “attack” on their faith plays powerfully. And so it is trumpeted from the political podium by such notable followers of Christ as serial adulterer Newt Gingrich, anti-abortionist Rick Santorum who approved a late-term abortion for his wife, and uber-hypocrite Mitt Romney who was pro-choice until the time came to kiss the backside of the evangelicals in his craven grasp for the nomination. And so, despite the separation of church and state, the overlap of religion and politics continues to simmer deep in the putrescent heart of America, salted and stoked by a cadre of sick and vicious bastards: Palin, Bachmann, Dobson, Robertson, Warren…people who know what god wants are well prepared to force everyone else to comply with their visions.
Where an institution that sanctioned and enabled centuries of child rape finds the nerve to argue any fucking thing from a moral position is beyond me, but there it is. The political and social fabric of the most powerful nation on earth is infected with unthinking hordes of Jesus freaks who take their marching orders from aging virgins and pedophiles in dresses; people who are only too happy to make their silly, edited, rewritten, redacted, poorly translated, inerrant word of god fiction the basis for what everyone else may or may not do.
    They must be stopped.

Feb. 13 (Bloomberg) — U.S. President Barack Obama will ask Congress for $26 million and at least 50 people for a new panel to investigate unfair trade practices by nations including China, whose Vice President Xi Jinping is scheduled to arrive today for a U.S. visit.
The 2013 budget proposal Obama will submit to Congress today contains funds for an Interagency Trade Enforcement Center that would monitor and enforce trade agreements and laws, according to an administration official. Obama announced his intention to create the panel, which would include lawyers, researchers, analysts and agents supported by the Commerce Department and U.S. Trade Representative, in his Jan. 24 State of the Union speech.
Obama is also seeking in his budget an additional $13 million for Customs and Border Protection efforts to target pirated goods, $10 million to post 16 Food and Drug Administration employees in China and three U.S.-based analysts to protect against unsafe imports, said the official, who asked not to be named before the budget plan was announced.

You know, I thought we dealt with this in the 60s! We got the contraceptive pill, life became better, women began to take charge of their lives, it was not political, it was health and medical. I was one of the early ones to use the pill….1966…and it was wonderful. We were so thankful for it. NEVER did I expect it to become controversial. WHY are we acting like it’s 1957???? YES, I know, men want their control back….that’s it in a nutshell. We women have got to make sure people vote, and vote the right way. We also have to pound the Senators on this backing down on domestic violence funding. That is unbelievable that these men would act this way!!! They ALL need to be defeated if they’re up for election. WE can do it.

    • February 12, 2012 at 11:37 pm

“WHY are we acting like it’s 1957???? YES, I know, men want their control back….that’s it in a nutshell.”

Sorry, Carolyn, not all of us men want to control women. Especially not men like me who experienced a loss of a woman family member who had no way out from this warped Christian morality. If women succumbed to human sexual desires (which by the way was between both men and women) and became pregnant they were left to shoulder all the moral guilt and blame imposed on them by religious institutions, like the Catholic Church. If they chose to carry the pregnancy to term, they and their children were ostracized; if they chose to terminate the pregnancy, using unsanitary and crude methods, to spare themselves, and their families from, social shame, they risked their lives.

Yes, I am a man. But I lost a beautiful, loving and talented sister in 1965, because, once she found out she was pregnant, she faced a no win situation. She belonged to a Christian family and she could not face the idea of bringing shame to the family. Instead she chose to undergo an unsafe abortion because there were no legal safe abortions. She ended up dying. The man who impregnated her never lost his status or his life. Besides, he happened to be a very important man withstanding in the community. I don’t know about other men, but I am absolutely determined to never let what happened to my dear sister happen to any other woman. By the way, that includes my precious daughter and all other women in my family. That is why I will be joining you in making sure that people get out and vote to defeat these idiots who want to turn the clock back to the dark ages when the lives and health of women didn’t matter.

I was nineteen when my sister died. Although that was 47 years ago, her memory is still very fresh in my mind. Every time I see these hypocritical, holier than thou, religious fanatics attacking contraceptives and safe abortions, I remember my sister who never got a chance to live because she had no access to contraceptives or safe abortion. And, she couldn’t face the shame to her and her family, as well as the ostracism, for having a child out of wedlock.

There is one area I totally agree with you Carolyn: I too “NEVER” expected the use of contraceptives to be so controversial. To be honest, I never Imagined that in this technologically advanced country (with internet, smart phones, face book, tweeter, etc.) we would elect leaders who are so anti-science, and so anti-progress, and so anti- women’s health. Sometimes I wake up and wonder what century we are in. Technologically we are in the 21st century, since some of us oldies have yet to catch up or understand how to operate all these new shiny devices. Sadly, however, on the social-cultural front It seems that the right wing Republicans are hell bent on taking this country back to the medieval ages. Who knows, listening to Rick Santorum, we may even be going back to the era when women were stoned to death if they were accused of committing adultery. Which leads me to ask this question: How come right wingers are so against fundamentalists Islamist when, if you examine the things they advocate, they have so much in common?

I am going to make sure every woman in my family read this and it should be a must read for Valentine’s Day. As much as I love chocolate, every woman should read this while enjoying a box of her favorite chocolate……or just a Hershey bar will do.

Thank you again. I am going to finish watching the video now! This is wonderful.

Wow…some great opposition research on Santorum at Balloon Juice: http://www.balloon-juice.com/2012/02/12/time-to-lend-mitt-a-helping-hand/ I had no idea he was that bad. Wow.

You mean the holy rolly Santorum is not so holy. Buddies with Jack Abramoff. Well, well, well. Let the war continue. Let Mitt, Newt, Paul, Rick, continue to rip each other to pieces as far as I am concern. None of them is qualified to be President of the U.S.

Thank you so much Tally. I just got a chance to sit down and read your entire article. I tried to read it earlier, but kept getting called away from the computer. I was becoming not-so-nice to those who kept calling me, so in their and my best interest I decided to wait until almost midnight to read it in peace. I caught the tail end (heh) of Paul Ryan saying the same stupid stuff you pointed out in your article. He as being interviewed by George Stephanopoulos who looked as though Ryan could have told him the sky was purple with pink polka dots and George would have agreed.

Tally, Bravo! Bravo! Bravo! What a Masterpiece. I hope that this gets widely circulated. So clear and concise with excellent examples. IMO, if anyone says that he/she does not understand this, then he/she is either illiterate or lying!

Thank you so much for this!

Please consider re-posting this, without the center justifying margins. Makes it hard to read.

And please consider re-posting with headings for each section.

It’s important information, and worthwhile editorializing, too, but it’s not terribly readable if you’re not already deeply interested in these issues.

If you’re preaching to the choir, this is fine. If you’re trying to reach beyond the choir, please re-format.

I’m reposting this and now that you have all seen Jennifer sing. I felt like she was crying inside and was not able to give it her whole gift. I have seen a video today of Jennifer actually singing to Whitney that is wonderful

One thing Whitney and Jennifer shared and that is both know and knew grief and almost unbearable pain. Peace to you Whitney as Stevey Wonder said and bless you Jennifer.

Thank you for posting this link. Beautiful performance. Lump still in my throat from watching Whitney and Jennifer together in that lovefest of song. Almost like nobody else was in the room. I agree that she was not able to give her whole performance. However, she was phenomenal because even holding back just to get through it she gave a great performance that nobody else could have delivered

Excellent piece Tally, I just finished reading it and what I didn’t know about insurance was alot. TOD has the smartest people and I learn so much. I printed this out and will give it to my sister-in-law and brother. My brother is always complaining about what he doesn’t want his tax $’s to pay for. My beautiful neice is in a good public school and will be heading to a public middle and high school. I asked my brother how did he believe that the small amount of taxes he pays goes to all the public resources he uses…public roads, schools, librarys, parks, fire, police, faa (they used to fly alot), fema (when we had an earthquake and future earthquakes), and a host of things that we take for granted. I told him I don’t like my tax $’s going to two wars, lazy congressmen/women who do not do the peoples business but listen and write laws that benefit corporations who pay no federal income taxes and get refunds (as a property owner I’ve gotten nothing but refunds since 1992) but I pay plenty sales taxes and fees in all the things i buy. I don’t have kids yet I help pay for schools which I would glady pay more. Also, he works for one of the large government contractors where the Federal Government is their largest and ONLY customer. HE IS ESSENTIALLY A GOVT WORKER! He complains the government spends too much money yet his employer is laying off because the Govt is spending more on “social” programs and less on “military” programs…WTF? Oh did I mention he’s a christian? I digress…the insurance explanation makes it so clear that PBO punked the GOP and the stupid media. It amazes me how many of these women on fox whose employer pays for their insurance reads what the GOP wants to do and think it won’t affect them too. I signed the petition you alerted us to and I hope more women are paying attention as to what the GOP has planned. I don’t know if you listen to Randi Rhodes but she mentioned the same thing you did about how long it takes to get pregnant. She gives the example by asking callers “if we had sex right now, how long would it take for me to get pregnant”? She also debunks the Plan B pill as an abortion pill because if you are already pregnant the Plan B pill won’t work, you’ll still be pregnant. Anyway once again Tally, good job and a very good read.

Tally, your article is fantastic, factual, clear and on point. It needs to be circulated across media networks. Thank you for posting such an insightful article.

However, although the essence of the article is important; what truly caught my attention is: “If anyone thinks this kind of insanity can’t happen here, I’d like to point out that Tehran once was the Paris of the Middle East… unless (we) have (President Obama’s) back, and gets everyone to understand that if every last one of us doesn’t VOTE come November, no matter how batshit insane the GOP candidate is, we could easily end up in an American that is as religiously insane and restrictive as Iran.” How true! How true!

Beyond the faux distractions coming from Congress, pundits, the GOP presidential candidates and their surrogates, I am hoping that the American electorate is paying attention to what is happening in the states since the 2010 Midterm Elections, especially those states with GOP/TP majority state houses. In addition to taking over the House of Representatives and having taken over the United States Supreme Court with its 5/4 GOP/TP majority, Ayn Rand has taken over, totally or in part, 60% of our state houses! If the GOP/TP gets control of the Executive Branch of Government, the American people will be “up the creek without a paddle.” In my opinion, WE WILL end up in an America that is as religiously insane and restrictive as Iran!

This country CANNOT AFFORD a GOP/TP president at this particular time. It would be dangerous for us all. I am constantly reminded of Benjamin Franklin’s statement when the Constitution was completed and signed by the delegates, “We have a Republic, if we can keep it!” Additionally, I think of Moses and the Israelites wandering in the wilderness for 40 years. For America to safeguard its democracy, it must, in my opinion, do everything that it can to ween out the destructive forces that are determine to change America into a plutocracy with theocratic underpinnings and a dictatorial government controlled by one-party. America must force the GOP/TP into the wilderness, starting with this election. The current GOP/TP legislators and those waiting in the wings are too extreme and dangerous for our Republic and our system of Checks and Balances.

I do not trust Mitt Romney at all. I believe that he is only interested in the title of being President and lavishing in the pomp that comes with the office. I truly believe that he has made a pact with the Koch Syndicate to serve as its puppet. The Koch brothers were one of the first to hold a fund-raiser for him and their “golden-boy” Chris Christie was one of the first to endorse him and is serving as his major surrogate. Christie said that he didn’t think that he was ready to be President; however, he has never said that he wasn’t ready to be Vice President. With Romney, he could become the second Dick Cheney if we allow a repeat of 2010.

Again, Tally, thanks for your enlightening essay and, in particular, drawing attention to the possible U.S./Iran connection. This has been a talking point for me for quite sometime.

  83. February 13, 2012 at 5:21 am

On Monday, the president’s reelection team will unveil a trio of Web sites dedicated to providing supporters with information on the president’s record — and more than a little dirt on his Republican rivals. The campaign has named it Obama’s “Truth Team,” and the goal is to arm millions of surrogates with the facts, figures and talking points they need to engage in ground-level political combat — on their Twitter and Facebook feeds and in old-fashioned conversations with friends and neighbors.

“We believe that our grass-roots supporters persuading their networks to support the president will provide us with the decisive edge in November,” Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said. “We’re providing them with the tools they need to amplify the president’s record, fact-check the Republicans’ attacks and prevent the Republicans from rewriting the history of their records.”

I am thrilled that President Obama and his team are rolling out these websites. I have been waiting for this. I knew it was coming. They had to do this. When you look at the long list of accomplishments THAT SHOULD BE COMMON KNOWLEDGE TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE – BUT AREN’T, you realize how effective the mainstream media firewall and the GOP lies have been in preventing the good news from getting out.

I am just sick and tired of hearing Mitt Romney (and the rest of the Republican Party) lie and make stuff up and the media just nods their heads and seem afraid to challenge their outlandish claims. The media is just useless. So President Obama and all of us who support him have to circumvent the media firewall and get the facts to the American people. These three website look like a good start to that effort.

Thanks,Jovie. I read the article and basically the Obama team is using three different sites. They are revamping “Attack Watch”… to counter lies from other candidates.

KeepingGOPHonest.com will be a site that Obama supporters can go to provide opposition research to the team….for example, the little tidbit about Santorum and his connections to Jack Abramoff and the forced Chinese abortions.

The last one is KeepingHisWord.com and this will be a listing of his promises and accomplishments toward that end.

Buckle up! We have work to do.

While the Republican Party is obstructing and sabotaging the economic recovery, President Obama and his administration are doing the hard work of governing and trying to improve the lives of the American people. Meanwhile, the feckless media focuses on GOP manufactured crises and the horse race. Controversy and who’s up and who’s down rules the day. The facts take a back seat to spin, lies and distortions. We deserve better.

Starting at 11:15 a.m. Monday, when the White House releases President Obama’s proposed spending plan for fiscal 2013, budget geeks across the country will be able to download it on their iPhones, Androids, BlackBerrys and other smart phones.

“You’d be surprised how much public interest there is in the budget,” said Davita Vance-Cooks, the acting public printer, whose office is rolling out the new app.

“It’s not just Washington that’s interested,” she said. “With all of the economic issues confronting us, the public cares a lot about this.”

The app will give users access to text and images in one of the budget’s four volumes, the 216-page book with the president’s budget message, his priorities and overviews of the spending plans of each federal agency. The rest of the 2,000-plus-page publication — the historical tables, “Analytical Perspectives” and appendix — can be read on mobile devices through online links to the government’s digital data system.

  93. February 13, 2012 at 8:40 am

It was a long road back, but President Obama is now back in positive territory in our TPM Poll Average.

The shift comes on the heels of a completed Iraq withdrawal, a legislative win on the payroll tax cut before Christmas, and perhaps most importantly, good economic numbers in January and early February. The President’s numbers have jumped in the last few days in both Gallup and Rasmussen tracking polls as well as individual national polls.

This isn’t the first time that Obama has been in positive territory in the last calendar year. But the other periods of sustained approval were triggered by individual events — the President’s rating went over water after his response to the shooting of former Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-AZ), and continued as the first events of the Arab Spring transpired. After his rating went into negative territory during late February of 2011, it peaked again after he announced a successful strike against Osama bin Laden. Then it trailed off again and fell deeply when Congress and the White House fought viciously over raising the debt ceiling.

Hey you guys check this out – President Obama just fired up a new web thing called the “Truth Team”

    Here’s the linky:

  95. February 13, 2012 at 8:59 am

OBAMA’S REQUEST FOR WAR FUNDING is expected to drop from $145.9 billion in 2009 to about $96.7 billion in 2013. About half of that savings will help finance a major six-year, 50 percent increase in transportation spending, POLITICO’s David Rogers reports. His story is here: http://politi.co/yi98jn

OVERALL, THE PRESIDENT’S REQUEST would produce a $901 billion deficit in 2013, after four straight years of $1 trillion-plus deficits, while at the same time adding a multibillion-dollar new initiative for community colleges as well as transportation, and $770 million in aid to promote democracy in the Middle East and North Africa. http://politi.co/zL1QUv

Tally, Just read your article. Way to go girl! I might change the part where you said “The Morning After Pill not only makes the uterus even more of an hostile environment against foreign bacteria like sperm”. …….”foreign bacteria, like sperm”, I know what your meant, but to some that statement would imply that sperm are foreign bacteria. Otherwise spot on and explains the role of insurance companies and employers.
Why was the push back to Komen and Planned Parenthood fiasco so huge and yet this issue does not have that same push back force?
Why did the media not let women (Like Barbara Boxer, Nancy Pelosi) speak on this issue yet have males on their panels talking on a subject that does not pertain to them? It would be like only having females talking about the side effects of prostate surgery and how it effects men. I am still not sure why someone like Oprah with the $ and TV experience does not have a morning TV show to counter the crap of Morning Joe and the likes. Where is our side in all of this? Where are the sane voices? Why is there no place for those voices that are being shut out?

    • 273 tally
      February 13, 2012 at 2:23 pm

Sperm ARE foreign bacteria where the uterus is concerned.

      *****Watch the documentary I linked.*****

The female reproductive tract is designed to weed out all but the strongest sperm so only the best and strongest DNA is allowed to enter the fallopian tubes to have access to the egg. Once the sperm fertilizes the egg, it’s no longer sperm, and then it’s welcome in the uterus, and can attach itself to the uterine wall.

Before that, it’s a just foreign organism which the female immune system must destroy to keep the uterus pristine while it waits for the fertilized egg.
