PoliticalWire: Obama campaign manager Jim Messina rallied local volunteers in Arizona over the weekend by assuring them that Obama intends to compete in Arizona, according to the Arizona Republic.

Said Messina: “People said last time, ‘Oh, you can’t win Virginia,’ until we did. ‘You can’t win Florida,’ until we did. ‘You can never win North Carolina,’ until we did. And so a whole bunch of people are saying, ‘Can he win Arizona? Can he not win Arizona?’ The fact is you all are the secret weapon we have.”

The campaign will soon have four offices in the state.

Pew Research: Barack Obama now holds an eight-point lead over Mitt Romney in a general election matchup, and he has gained significant ground among independent voters. A month ago, 40% of independents said they would back Obama over Romney – today 51% say they would, while the number expressing support for Romney has slipped from 50% to 42%.

Paul Krugman: Mitt Romney has a gift for words – self-destructive words. On Friday he did it again, telling the Conservative Political Action Conference that he was a “severely conservative governor.”

As Molly Ball of The Atlantic pointed out, Mr. Romney “described conservatism as if it were a disease.” Indeed. Mark Liberman, a linguistics professor at the University of Pennsylvania, provided a list of words that most commonly follow the adverb “severely”; the top five, in frequency of use, are disabled, depressed, ill, limited and injured.

That’s clearly not what Mr. Romney meant to convey. Yet if you look at the race for the G.O.P. presidential nomination, you have to wonder whether it was a Freudian slip. For something has clearly gone very wrong with modern American conservatism.

        Yes, LL, we had the “Cosby” affect in the 1980’s where we wanted to be like the fictional Cosby family where we respected each other, mother, father, grandparents and the importance of doing your best, going for the brass ring…college. Now we have a “real” family that is the anthesis of what the cosby show was about. I hope more young women will be like Michelle and young men will want to be like Barack, to want more than just money but to give back, make this world better than how you found it, to participate in your future and that government is US and it can be good.

            I saw it years ago…I didn’t like that the girl slept with so many men especially during the height of the aids epidemic of the 80’s, not a good message at that time. I liked “Do the Right Thing”, “Jungle Fever” and “Malcolm X”. What is Spike Lee doing these days? Has he made enough money from his movies and is just enjoying himself?

    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-02-13/obama-futures-rallying-in-correlation-with-s-p-500-best-start-in-21-years.html

    The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index’s biggest rally to start a year since 1991 is coinciding with a 15 percent increase in President Barack Obama’s re-election odds, showing growing investor confidence in the U.S. economy.
    The benchmark gauge for American shares has climbed as much as 7.5 percent in 2012, the most in 21 years, as unemployment fell and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke vowed to keep interest rates near zero through 2014, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

    /snip/

    Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and other opponents have cast Obama as an ineffective steward of the economy and his policies, such as the 2009 stimulus plan, as failures. The gains may make it harder for Republicans, traditionally the party aligned with American business because of their appeals for smaller government, said Julian Zelizer, a political historian at Princeton University.
    “For a Republican, good news on the stock market is not necessarily good news for them,” Zelizer said in a Feb. 9 phone interview. “They don’t want to be begrudging about it or complaining about good stock prices. But that said, they’re in a bind. Their major case in this election really depends on a bad economy, so any measure that that’s not true, like the market, undercuts the claim.”

    CONSERVATIVE ECONOMIST BRUCE BARTLETT on “WHERE THE RIGHT WENT WRONG”

    Bill Moyers interviewed Bruce Bartlett last Friday and what we get is a very honest analysis of today’s Republican Party from someone who should know. Bruce doesn’t mince words and manages to paint a pretty dysfunctional picture of a party that has lost it’s way. His very candid comments about Grover Norquist are also refreshing. You will find yourself nodding your head in agreement constantly as he hits nail after nail on the head. Think of this as a crash course on the Decline of Today’s Republican Party 101. It’s about 25 minutes, but well worth your time. It’s definitely tweet worthy.

    =====================================================

    Bruce Bartlett on Where the Right Went Wrong

    February 10, 2012

    In this Moyers & Company segment, Bill Moyers talks with conservative economist Bruce Bartlett, who wrote “the bible” for the Reagan Revolution, worked on domestic policy for the Reagan White House, and served as a top treasury official under the first President Bush. Now he’s a heretic in the conservative circles where he once was a star.

    Bartlett argues that right-wing tax policies — pushed in part by Grover Norquist and Tea Party activists — are destroying the country’s economic foundation. When he called George W. Bush out as “a pretend conservative” in his book Impostor: Why George W. Bush Bankrupted America and Betrayed the Reagan Legacy, Bartlett was fired from his position as a senior fellow at a conservative think tank. His new book is The Benefit and the Burden: Tax Reform — Why We Need It and What It Will Take

    2010 ELECTION VOTERS ARE SUFFERING “BUYER’S REMORSE” IN FIVE+ US STATES

    By Gary Ater

    ===================================

    Yes, as many knee-jerk Tea Party voters said in the 2010 mid-term elections, “I’ll show them who’s running this country!”, and they then voted-in a hand-full of super right-wing governors. Many of those voters are now licking their wounds as they are “reaping what they have sown”.

    These radical governors, in this still down economy, are showing just where their priorities lie, and it’s not with our youth or our schools. As it is with the Republicans in Washington, they are all about supporting the very wealthy and the southern evangelicals.

    Here are the 5 states and the governors that I am referring to:

    >>> South Carolina’s Governor Nikki Haley
    >>> Alabama’s Governor Robert Bentley
    >>> Florida’s Governor Rick Scott
    >>> Pennsylvania’s Governor Tom Corbett
    >>> Ohio’s Governor John Kasich

    Let’s look at what these governors are doing to their respective states:

    ===================================

    Debate suddenly shifts on birth control
    By Amie Parnes and Sam Baker – 02/13/12 08:43 PM ET
    The furor over President Obama’s birth-control insurance mandate appears to have vaporized as quickly as it blew up.

    The White House faced just two questions on the issue at a briefing with reporters Monday, just days after the intense controversy threatened to swamp the president’s reelection campaign.

    While the president’s Friday “accommodation” did not win over the White House’s most harsh critics, some Republicans and Catholic groups have offered measured support, including centrist Maine Republican Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, suggesting Obama might have at least muddied the waters.

    • February 13, 2012 at 11:24 pm

      I certainly wouldn’t have said that the “intense controversy threatened to swamp the President’s re-election campaign”. It was a gift, because there was no way that the GOP could win if this thing had dragged on. Clearly, the MSM is trying to recover the mess the GOP created for themselves by painting this as a bad thing for President Obama that he tried to secure health care benefits for women, in opposition to the men who try to control them. whereas, a bunch of GOP men tried to deny them health care. How on earth was that going to end up badly for President Obama? They think we’re stupid.

    Hey TOD family,

    I need some TWITTER help. I was just getting the hang of it. Then they went and changed the format. How come I see tweets from people I don’t know (and don’t want to follow) but I don’t see tweets from the people I do know and follow??

    For example, I see Bobfr’s tweets here at TOD, I follow Bobfr on Twitter, but yet, I do not see his tweets on my twitter account. What am I missing?

    • February 13, 2012 at 11:37 pm

      Click on his name and make sure you are following him. Also, I’m not sure if its always been this way but the twitter name you sign in with (the one in light colored font and has @ before it) now comes second. Again I’m not sure if this has always been this way but I do know that I kept wondering who are these people?

      For example, in the old twitter mine was like this: @Gobrooklyn AW: blah blah blah . With new twitter it says AW @Gobrooklyn: blah blah and you’re wondering who the heck is AW because the name in bold is the one you paid attention to in old twitter.

      Again, I’m not sure about this. Could be I wasn’t paying much attention before.

        Thanks, GoB. Yeah, I checked to make sure that I was following Bobfr, (I am) but I’m still confused. I think Twitter may have lost me. I don’t have the time or the patience to figure it out. Oh well, it’s not like I don’t have enough other stuff to do.

    Yes, the birth control flap was another nine-day wonder. The public’s interest is short, and this wasn’t worth the time the media devoted to it. However, I think women will not be watching closely!

    Initiating the State Truth Teams-

    President Obama’s Minnesota re-election campaign began in earnest on Monday with the unveiling of its “Truth Team,” part of a nationwide initiative rolled out by the Obama for America campaign.

    Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and a slate of local politicians and volunteers gathered at the state Capitol to kick off the campaign, ready to devote the rest of this election cycle to what they see as myth-busting.

    “We are not going to allow any lie to go unanswered,” said DFL Chairman Ken Martin.

    After not watching the Daily show for some time, I just finished watching John Stewart
    spent about half his show on the contraception debate…he mentioned the catholic
    church and the child molestation scandal…I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed his show, but tonight
    was a thing of beauty.

    Sorry I don’t have a link.

    Woops! That Wasn’t The Plan
    http://bobcesca.com/blog-archives/2012/02/woops-that-wasnt-the-plan.html

    “According to ABC News, that commercial didn’t exactly have the intended effect on the electorate Hoekstra was hoping for.

    The racially insensitive campaign ad that ignited an onslaught of criticism against Senate candidate Pete Hoekstra has inspired a flood of fundraising for his chief rival, incumbent Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich.

    Within hours after the Hoekstra ad aired during the Super Bowl Feb. 5, featuring an Asian girl commending “Debbie Spend-It-Now” in broken English for shipping U.S. jobs to China, Stabenow launched a money “bomb” in response to what she called the “shocking” and “nasty” ad.

    As of Friday, Stabenow’s money “bomb” had brought in $155,720, about $11,000 more than Hoekstra spent on the ad attacking her.

    Woops! It’s good to know that there are areas of the country where blatant racism doesn’t pay off…”

    That Tyler Perry is really a Class act guy: He provided his private Jet to transport Whitney’s Body from LA to New Jersey..I also remember the time..He took those black kids to Disney Land ..after he heard they were denied to swim in the public school swimming pool..Bless him.
