President Barack Obama talks with Anand Srinivasan, 15, in the Blue Room, Feb. 7, 2012, during the second annual White House Science Fair celebrating student winners of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) competitions from across the country. Srinivasan, a sophomore from Roswell High School in Roswell, Ga., was a finalist in the Google Science Fair for his project, which examines the use of electroencephalography (EEG) and prosthetic technology to make a more functional artificial limb. Bloomberg: The U.S. is the closest it has been in almost 20 years to achieving energy self-sufficiency, a goal the nation has been pursuing since the 1973 Arab oil embargo triggered a recession and led to lines at gasoline stations.

Domestic oil output is the highest in eight years. The U.S. is producing so much natural gas that, where the government warned four years ago of a critical need to boost imports, it now may approve an export terminal. Methanex Corp., the world’s biggest methanol maker, said it will dismantle a factory in Chile and reassemble it in Louisiana to take advantage of low natural gas prices….

The result: The U.S. has reversed a two-decade-long decline in energy independence, increasing the proportion of demand met from domestic sources over the last six years to an estimated 81 percent through the first 10 months of 2011 … That would be the highest level since 1992.

…. The transformation, which could see the country become the world’s top energy producer by 2020, has implications for the economy and national security – boosting household incomes, jobs and government revenue; cutting the trade deficit; enhancing manufacturers’ competitiveness; and allowing greater flexibility in dealing with unrest in the Middle East.

… The last time the U.S. achieved energy independence was in 1952…. The shift to increased energy independence is also the result of government policies to depress oil demand …. Automakers have agreed to raise the fuel economy of the vehicles they sell in the U.S. to a fleetwide average of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025 under an agreement last year with the Obama administration.

ThinkProgress: While Catholic leaders and Republicans have distorted the Obama administration’s rule requiring employers to provide contraception at no additional cost, a majority of Americans, including a majority of Catholics, support such a requirement, according to a new poll conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute. The requirement garners support from 55 percent of Americans and 58 percent of Catholics, though the number is slightly lower (52 percent) for Catholic voters. As Igor Volsky reported today, many Catholic hospitals and universities already cover contraception in their health plans.

ThinkProgress: … Twenty-eight states already require organizations that offer prescription insurance to cover contraception and since 98 percent of Catholic women use birth control, many Catholic institutions offer the benefit to their employees. For instance, a Georgetown University spokesperson told ThinkProgress yesterday that employees “have access to health insurance plans offered and designed by national providers to a national pool. These plans include coverage for birth control”.

New Yorker: ….. Romney is relying on a media offensive managed by operatives who have long been at the heart of Washington’s Republican attack machine. One of the leaders of this advertising war is Larry McCarthy, a veteran media consultant best known for creating the racially charged “Willie Horton ad,” which, in 1988, helped sink Michael Dukakis, the Democratic nominee for President.

I was thinking about that the other day, looking at her during the breakfast prayer, it was early in the morning…she looked absolutely gorgeous as usual….

I couldn’t help but laugh at the difference between FLOTUS’ morning routine and mine….how early she gets up, her hour and 1/2 workout in the morning…..

My first thoughts when I wake up is this: ”Oh no, is it morning already?”…I crawl out of bed, take my shower,….the water is so hot that I could steam vegetables at the same time….and that’s it. It doesn’t wake me up, it just make me sleepier.

I start working at 9 but my brain usually wake up around 11……

I wish I had one tenth of her motivation!

I think it’s been long past that we ignore Ron Paul and quit concern trolling over what he says. He has about as much chance as winning as Sean Hannity getting waterboarded for charity. We need to focus on Mitt and supporting ProritiesUSA SUPER PAC.

    • February 7, 2012 at 9:42 pm

And you best believe Paul is going to make sure his district gets all the federal dollars from this bill that he can. Of course then he’ll conveniently vote against it. He’s a huckster from way back. That’s some old school bait and switch.

Looks like the SuperPac outrage from the fake left is exactly like their outrage in 2008 when candidate Obama decided to forgo public financing. The fake left cried their crocodile tears, and Obama STILL won.

And it’s telling that they’re cowering behind Feingold, the man who confirmed the very judges who support Citizens United. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s revealed that Feingold is being paid by the Koch Bros to attack the President over SuperPacs, yet the fake left is still buying the outright lie that Feingold is standing for liberal principles by attacking the President over telling us to donate to ProritiesUSA Super Pac. Feingold continues to demonstrate he truly does NOT know how to fight, hence why he is FORMER Senator Feingold and is partially to blame for, incidentally enough, a Citizens United funded Republican taking his seat and a Citizens United funded Governor now being recalled.

what did BriWi mean by “the frivolity”???? when he showed the picture of PBO with the science fair kids?

    • February 7, 2012 at 9:08 pm

There was some pretty crazy fun stuff today at the Science fair, so they probably showed that. One kid had a cannon that shot marshmallows and PBO wanted to see how it worked. Silly but great fun for all.

  14. February 7, 2012 at 8:57 pm

I have been gone all day and just got back to my comput so I had to spend some time going over the last couple of posts which, unfortunately for you, has prompted me to make a few comments and kill 26 birds with one stone, so to speak.
But first, a little personal news. One of the reasons I was gone all day was my younger son was defending his PhD dissertation in History today at Northwestern. His wife couldn’t get out of work so he asked his mom and i to be there for moral support. If you knew him, you would realize what a big thing that was for him to include us. Anyway, he came out afterwards almost in tears, but we found out they were tears of joy. After 10 years he was told that his dissertation was one of the best they have had in the past several years and he should definitely publish it either as a book or as a series of articles in a scholarly magazine.
The rest of the day was spent with my doing job interviews. I was part of one of the first time unemployment claims figuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuin the last report and now I want to be part of the new jobs reports. They went well, but I have learned in my life not to count those chickens too early.
Now on to things of more substance.
First regarding the Clint Eastwood Chrysler ad. Personally, I was one of those who didn’t see it as aolmost being a commercial for the Obama campaign. But I am thriloled that Rove and other Republicans have made such a big deal of it. First, it has expanded exposure of the ad, and when people view it, they will have that perception of it being a positive statement of the bailout in the back of their minds, and for those who are conservative but view Eastwood as a trustw2orthy inbdividual, it can have an influence.

Second, rgarding the contraceptive controversy. I really don’t think this will have much meaning for the election. Those Catholics who are against birth control are also those Catholics that are against abortion and would never vote for Obama anyway. The larger point, however, is that by refusing to allow for birth control pills to be covered by the insurancethese institutions which any many non-Catholics employed are trying to dictate to those non-Catholics on the matter of birth control. Additionally, birth control pills are used for many things other than just to prevent a pregnancy. There are many disorders where BCPs are prescribed as regular treatment.

On to the whole Super PAC issue. Again, there is somewhat of a misreporting on the whole issue. The Obama campaign has, in the past, been disocouraging their supporters from donating to those PACs. Basically now, they are just saying we won’t disapprove any more and will provide some support. They are not necessarily saying that people should give to the PACs, just not telling them not to. Secondly, one of thngs they are being very insistent on is telling the PACs to be very open with naming who has provided donations, unlike the RW PACs. I was interested to get Bill Pr3ess’ take on this this morning as I driving my on. He has been one of those PLers who has been very critical of Obama in the past. Today he basically came out and said that it was about time. Sure, it is nice to have a principle to stand on, but standing on a principle never put out a fire and a major confagration is what we will have if Romney wins in November.

Finally, Michelle is one fine woman, in every sense of the word.

“Michelle is one fine woman, in every sense of the word.”

and she is uber intelligent and baddass too! POTUS has an amazing woman at his side.

Congrats to your son and I wish you much success in your job search.

    • February 7, 2012 at 9:14 pm

Big congrats on a really big day for you and your family. I hope you and your son find work that you love.

To me it just seems like another day of hot air. None of this will matter in a week or so.

FLOTUS is one of the best things to happen to our country in decades. Truly astonishing woman who provides a shining example of what it’s like to take care of one’s self, be healthy and happy. I think she’s really found her pace with all her projects and it shows. She’s beaming all the time.

Congratulations on your son’s dissertation defense! They say that good news comes in threes so hope you are successful in getting one (or two) job offers from the interviews 🙂 And I agree about the superPACS. The media is just looking for a distraction at this point – so they will try to make a mountain out of a molehill for anything PBO does.

Nice roundup, japa21! First, a huge congratulations to your son! HUGE!!! My husband is ABD…and life got in the way…so I know what it takes to get this far and to have worked so hard and to have that huge compliment in support of his dissertation.Way to go….you must be VERY proud:)

The rest of the noise is just that. Noise. They got nothing and they are getting desperate. They think that divide and conquer is the way to get votes? Good luck with that. The fact that Romney (when he was more liberal…in his other life) has done ALL the things that PBO has done, won’t go over real well in the GE. How does he even defend that? He’s an arrogant ass…and will be exposed as just that…soon enough.I hope that arrogant ass is served up on a platter come November.

    • February 7, 2012 at 9:46 pm

Japa, congratulations on your son. That is a very big deal and he deserves a tremendous amount of credit and good luck on your job hunt. Agree with all your points and also agree that there is a lot of faux outrage going on that will fade away at the first sign of another shining object.

    • February 7, 2012 at 10:49 pm

Congratulations on your son’s dissertation!! What a thrill – you and your wife must be extremely proud. And how nice that you were there to witness it – even though you weren’t in the room, your strength was in the room with him. He probably couldn’t wait to come out and tell you all the wonderful things they said about him in that room.

Congrats on your son’s successful defense of his PhD dissertation. You must be a proud Papa! From what you’ve been contributing to this blog and other pragmatic progressive blogs, it is no wonder your son is so smart. What’s that saying about the apple not falling far from the tree? I always enjoy reading your thoughtful commentaries. The other points you made in your comment are so spot-on. You are also absolutely right: First Lady, Michelle Obama, is an amazing person. She is not only smart, but she has such tremendous zest for life. She is a role model to my daughter, my nieces, and my grand niece who is Maria’s age. They all love Michelle and the entire Obama family.

This is somewhat OT, but I still have to share it with you guys. Over the weekend I was in a very bad car accident. The car is gone and the fact that I sit here and type this post is a complete miracle. I’m pretty sure that I’m still in shock, because I didn’t even cry since it happened, even though I really should have. All that until I saw that group hug of PBO and those young girls, and started to cry for about an hour. I feel a little better now, though it’s going to take some time to get over the trauma. I’m telling you all that just so I can say how much I love you all, even if I don’t know you. Thanks for creating this wonderful home.

But the important thing is that we humans are amazing at healing. Take a deep breath and exhale often.

When I heard PBO talk about those girls from that poor town in Texas I really teared up. I’m quite sure they will never ever forget the support and encouragement from him. His kindness and acknowledgement of those young people who struggle to achieve their dreams is so moving, it just really affects me.

So happy you are ok. I went through something similar in 2010. Had five surgeries and could not walk for 12 weeks. Then had to use a walker and cane for many, many weeks. Am still recovering, but thankful to be here. Cry when you need to; it helps a lot. Wishing you the best.

Really terrible news about your car accident! ThankGod you are o.k. blackwaterdog! You mean so much to many of us! I know I’ve never met you in person, but I was able to experience your spirit of love and courage. It’s you who provided me a home to voice my support for this incredible President. It was you who provided me a home to vent against those who were unfairly attacking the President. It was you who kept feeding me positive information about the President in order to counter the negativity from the right, the emoprogs and lazy MSM. Finally, It was you who linked me to this wonderful site run by Chipsticks, which has filled the shoes you left when you took a rest.

I pray that you recover well. As someone who survived a car accident 35 years ago I still have vivid memories of that acvident. Like you, my car was completely totaled. I spent a month in the hospital recovering from injuries. It took me time to get over the trauma. So I know It will take time to get over your trauma. But you are such a strong person and you will eventually overcome this tragedy. Please know that there are many of us who love you and are thinking about you as you go through this difficult time.

      Wishing you a speedy recovery!
      Nathan

A couple more quick comments. I always get a kick when people say, for example, they don’t want their tax dollars to py for abortions or their insurance premiums to pay for contraceptives, etc. These people obvioulsy have no idea how insurance works. Their premiums don’t get put away in a special box with their names on it, or even their employers name. It goes into a vast pool of funds from which payments are made. Just because a specific policy does not cover abortion or contraceptives does not mean thet your premium dollars are not helping pay for those things.
The other thing relates to the clip with the marshmallow air cannon. I was running that clip with my wife watching. Afterwards I turned and said to my wife “How can people call him aloof and unable to connect with people?” And she remarked that you could tell he was not just going through the motions and that he was genuinely engaged with the kids and interested in what they had done. If this had been done when Bush was there, he would have just gone in there, said cngratulations and left, and then asked when the rugrats were leaving.

Nice post by Smartpants…reminding us why PBO supports science. I especially liked this:

“Promoting science isn’t just about providing resources, it is also about protecting free and open inquiry,” Obama said. “It is about letting scientists like those here today do their jobs, free from manipulation or coercion, and listening to what they tell us, even when it’s inconvenient especially when it’s inconvenient. It is about ensuring that scientific data is never distorted or concealed to serve a political agenda and that we make scientific decisions based on facts, not ideology.”

I just watched a good segment on The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell. He interviewed Jane Mayer and John Harwood. jane Mayer is terrific. She basically said it’s really silly to be criticizing President Obama about the superpacs because he is just playing by the rules that are in place. Want to laugh? Louie Gommert reminds me of my next door neighbor….who, by the way, wondered over to my house yesterday and stood in my driveway, staring at the ass end of my car. I was in my husband’s office and happened to notice some guy just standing there…I said, Why is that guy just STANDING in our driveway? I think it’s the crazy neighbor from next door!”

My husband opened the window and basically asked WTH? The guy muttered something about old people (he IS one) and the fact that they (a bunch of old people) had managed to put up 6 cameras up a palm tree and were SPYING on us. OH DEAR! Told my husband that he had 6 hours of video on the cameras in the palm tree….wanted to let us know to be careful. Good Lord.

Japa21, what a great feeling for you and your family. Enjoy every second and blessings on employment for the both of you.
BWD, I am sort of new here. But comfortable enough to come out of the lurking mode.

I just want to let you know that I am praying for your healing inside and out. I am so glad that you were able to cry, that is part of healing. I am equally happy that a picture as simple as a “group hug” allowed the flow of tears to start the process.

It just confirms that we need four more years…..and then some of this wonderful President. If a picture can bring about healing, we will never know how his speeches are affecting people who are still suffering before he was elected into office.

The healing process has begun and my prayer is that you come here often as you need for the love and respect that is freely offered here among family and friends. In between the pain and tears, as your spirit and body grows stronger, you will look back on this as only a test. And I have come to a realization that every test is meant to make us stronger and build our character.

You are alive! You are a miracle! You are needed here. We have an Inauguration to attend. Much rest and peace.
