        MSNBC Romney’s Economy Problem

Laura Ingraham: Isn’t it a hard argument to make if you’re saying “Ok, he inherited this recession, and he took a bunch of steps to try to turn the economy around, and now we’re seeing more jobs, but vote against him anyway.”

Isn’t that a hard argument to make? Is that a stark contrast?

Mitt Romney: Have you got a better one, Laura? (laughter) It just happens to be the truth!

“I like firing people” , W.M. Romney cheerfully told us in a spontaneous, unguarded moment a few weeks ago on the campaign trail. This week, he fired Brett O’Donnell, debate coach who helped him be successful in last Friday’s Florida debate. Reason was silly, silly, silly…., but to see in ‘instant replay’, a current representation of life at Bain Capital was educational . Made a believer out of me!!!.

Not finished reading the article, but this part* stood out for me. [People think federal employees are making top dollar. The salaries are just fine, but there’s a Pay Comparability Act under which the salaries of federal workers are to be compared each year. Think it was enacted in the ’80s (my earliest recollection of it, when I worked for the Navy). Salaries are compared and the President has the option of increasing federal salaries, if they don’t measure up, or granting a waiver. As far as I know, every President grants a waiver, and federal salaries in many occupations – if not all – end up being LOWER than pay for comparable work in the private sector (similar to how many women aren’t paid the same as male co-workers doing the same work). Anyway, enough of my personal rant, here’s that piece from Charles M. Blow’s article about Romney:]

*This is the same man who in November claimed that federal employees are making “a lot more money than we are.” What?! We? What we? Please direct me to the federal employees with the $20 million paychecks. In fact, The Washington Post pointed out in November that federal employees on average “are underpaid by 26.3 percent when compared with similar nonfederal jobs, a ‘pay gap’ that increased by about 2 percentage points over the last year while federal salary rates were frozen.”

      • 34 Obama Grandmama
        February 4, 2012 at 1:32 pm

Maybe the comparison of Federal workers making more than Private company workers is a projection forward that after all the Right to
Work (for less) Laws are passed the Federal Workers job pay will seem exorbitent (sp?)in comparison. The GOP tries to divide by envy and conquer all the while claiming that is what we are doing.

Mitt is just full of CACA he flops flops every minute on anything, PBO had a great news this weekend and
it will be intersting if the talk shows on Sunday will give PBO any credit and the MSM should ask to GOP
what proposals for creating jobs have they come out with other than just say FUCKING NO to everything so far
that PBO has proposed to create jobs, The GOP are scare shit of the progress our presiden has been doing.

Friday Rachel had a great segment on what misspoke reallly means as Romney claimed he misspoke about the poor. There were several examples of past misspoken phrases that were quite humorous. She said why what Romney had said several times over and over on the campaign trail was not misspeaking.

Another hello to the TOD fam. Hey hopefruit, I saw in the previous thread that you wanted a play by play of what happened on Up With Chris Hayes this morning and why your twitter timeline was blowing up super crazy. You’re not the only one. All of our twitter timelines were red hot! And that was because Chris had Jodi Kantor on the panel. The woman who wrote that gossipy book about the Obamas. The woman who trolled Facebook for friends of John McCain’s 16 year old daughter and got their phone numbers so that she could pen a trashy article about Cindy McCain. Now, I don’t like Cindy and John McCain’s policies and politics but I think that’s despicable. She received a deluge of complaints from both left wing and right wing readers of the NYT and the NYT actually had to address the issue.

Anyways on to Chris Hayes. The panel comprised of Joan Walsh from Salon, Karen Hunter, a publisher and contributor to MSNBC, Kantor, and Baratunde Thurston an editor at The Onion and author of a book that examines being black in America and how society treats African-Americans etc. Chris began the discussion with the good jobs numbers and at every juncture while others were focused on the politics of the good numbers, Kantor just kept going on and on and on ad nauseam about her book. “Well…in my book about the Obamas…blah..blah..blah.” She pointed out that when she interviewed friends and classmates of Romney from Harvard who were liberal and conservative, they all said how warm he was, how he cared about the less privileged, how funny he was. But when it comes to PBO, he’s remote, he’s awkward, he’s not warm, he doesn’t know how to connect with people, the Washington socialites, press corps, & elites complain about how he’s so cold and detached. Karen Hunter immediately dispelled that untruth. She told Kantor to go look at videos of events both big and small and there in color is ample evidence that PBO more than connects with people, has empathy in spades, and enjoys being with everyday people. Kantor then tried to downplay the good economic news by saying that Democrats and PBO still have some warped fear of Romney. That we shouldn’t even be slightly happy about the jobs news because PBO is just like Charlie Brown who gets a football in his hand and fumbles it. Karen Hunter’s expression was classic. Her face was like “Who the hell is this negative bitch?” Karen told her that PBO is not fumbling anything. 23 straight months of job creation/growth is not a fumble.

Then an author Michelle Alexander came on to talk about her book. It was a book about Reagan, and other lawmakers War on Drugs and how it disproportionately affects minorities. The discussion was progressing nicely and then Kantor had to get another dig in at President Obama. She asked the author how disappointed she was in PBO and his drug policies. The author sounded like one of those Tavis Smiley and Cornel West types. She went on and on about how disappointed she was in PBO’s drug policies, that though he declared that he’s not interested in a Reaganesque war on drugs, he’s not addressed the issue about race about this and that and this and that. Karen Hunter came to PBO’s defense again and corrected that slanted view.

Then the real screamer came. Chris moved on to Kantor’s book and that’s when twitterers and TOD twitterers justifiably lost their ever loving righteous minds. Kantor tried to imply that she was the Obamas best friends, that she interviewed them for the book, that she knows the ins and outs of their marriage. Chris – finally – called her out on that vein of thought. He cited himself as an example and said that people not involved in a couples marriage know nothing about that marriage. An outsider can’t tell/write about what the couple is feeling, who the couple are and the intimate details of their marriage because the outsider is just that; an outsider. He also kinda called her out for trying to portray FLOTUS as an angry black woman. She tried to deny it and said she was portraying her as a woman with very strong opinions, very decisive agenda etc. Joan Walsh came to her support and said it’s only the rightwing who slam PBO and FLOTUS ad nauseam. That they criticize them for everything and never give them credit. That was really hypocritical of Walsh considering that in the 08 primaries, she pretty much called FLOTUS an angry black woman because she was a Hillary supporter and a PUMA. Karen Hunter blasted her! (Kantor) She told her not to deny that she got 7 figures for the book so of course she had to include gossipy things that never happened and try to portray them as fact. She told Kantor that she (Karen) as a publisher knows the behind the scenes about how gossipy books are created. That she wanted to get the book out there so fast that she didn’t bother to take the time to fact check her stories. Kantor interrupted her and kept saying that she had multiple sources to confirm the details in her book, Karen tried to question her about the veracity of that statement and Kantor – this is when I thought people on twitter were going to reach into their TV’s and choke Kantor – did the Mitt Romney debate thing. She rudely cut Karen off and was like “Excuse me! excuse me! I’m talking!” Everyone on the panel looked taken aback by that level of rudeness. Kantor then went on about how PBO and FLOTUS are having a private Superbowl party with only family this year because in previous years it was all about politics and politicking. That they always use events like this for politics and not downtime with the family. But they don’t want to get criticized in an election year so they’re relegating it to only family. its all about politics. Karen pointed out to her that they’ve always had friends and family over for Superbowl and it has nothing to do with politics. They’re just like any regular American family who gather with friends and family to watch football. Kantor then also went on about Mrs. Robinson, FLOTUS’s mother as though she knew her personally. It was disgusting.

She was essentially there to peddle her book, slam PBO and FLOTUS, and praise Romney. Thank goodness for Karen Hunter. She called her out on every untruth, every lie, and every opinion Kantor tried to portray as fact. If anyone wants to thank Karen Hunter, her twitter handle is @karenhunter.

It was a hack job on Mrs. Obama by that Kantor woman and I do not appreciate it. So for Hayes to have her on his show, well it’s his show he can have who ever, what ever he wants, but that doesn’t mean I have to watch it. Jodi Kantor is a bold face liar just like Mitt Romney. And she thought everyone was going to buy that book of hers, she didn’t expect the feedback she got. That is because she don’t get that a lot of people admire and respect Michelle Obama. A hell of alot more than they do her.

      • 63 HZ
        February 4, 2012 at 2:04 pm

Meta. I hope that this Kantor person will take her ugly unhappy attitude so place else to promote her envy, hatefulnes, and bitterness about the First Family somewhere else. I am so elated that we are a site who will listen, share our thoughts, and choose to not fill our minds with her garbage.

We will not be distracted with the like of this woman. We represent people who want to help others to make it through this rough time, and one thing we have seen, POB and VP Joe are trying so hard to do just that. When good things are happening, you will always see the ugly instruments of this type of behavior come out in full force and try to steal our joy, but we are stronger than they are.

We will win this battle. I have cried so many tears, prayed so many prayers, sent so many good vibes out toward our POTUS and VPOTUS each morning and throughout the day, and I have faith that he and Joe will be sustained through our thoughts, prayers, meditations centered around them because we have to help so many people.

I would rather be on the side of trying to help get people to register to vote, encourage them that we will come back in the economy and better days will come, but patience has to be in our heart along with out hard work of good deeds to help POB.

I just had the opportunity to share these very thoughts with a middle aged technician who came to repair my computers, and we had a great conversation. I tried to encourage him, spoke of what our President is doing to clean up the mess, and he was so receptive. These conversations will help a lot. So let us be encourage and stay focus.

This hack’s book will not discourage us because we see our POB, VP Joe, FLOTUS, and Dr. Jill’s deeds daily. We will stand as a great family here. Yes, hell, it hurts so badly, but we are strong. We got him elected in 2008, so I do believe we can and must do it again in 2012. We are here for each other.

I love you all so much, and I missed you all sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much!!!!!! HZ

Oh thank you so much UT for this EXCELLENT and detailed recap of what happened. I always felt Ms. Kantor was a Romney supporter by the images she has on her Twitter feed. There is not a single pic of PBO/FLOTUS or anything resembling the Obama administration or campaign. If you are their “friends” as you claim then why don’t you have any pics of them but instead you post a pic of Romney and his wife on your Twitter feed (with a complimentary comment below it)?
