help?

A gazillion thanks to those of you who contacted me recently about a ‘troll’ in our midst, you know who you are – thank you again. The troll won’t be back.

We should be honored, there’s been a pretty major attempt in the last few weeks by trolls (of the Tea and Firebagger variety) to get on the site – they post really smart stuff like:

“I just love President Obama, he’s amazing …. but a right wing friend of mine just emailed me stuff that suggests he’s an America-hating (Fox link), muslin, communist (Fox link), Nazi, socialist (Fox link), evil, satanic (Fox link), fascist who eats white babies (Fox link) and spits them out on the floor, like they’re chewed tobacco – and Michelle is like totally a KGB spy! (Fox link) Please help me reply to my friend with the truth.”

Seriously trolls, you gotta do waaaaaaay better than that.

We’ll get lots more of this cringeworthy crap in the months ahead, so because I don’t have the chance to read all the comments every day, I’d really appreciate if you helped me out by alerting me to this silliness:

So, please email me at theobamadiary@gmail.com if you think you spot one of these creatures.

It usually takes me (at least) a week to reply, but bear with me – I’ll get there in the end!

I just want to keep this blog free of nasty nutjobs, so if you can help ….  thank you 😉

Ok. I hope I can tell the difference. Thanks for all you do.

      @Cindy Swett

I am NOT 100% sure, but a troll would probably write “too sweet”(one can tell) comments fill with MANY links to tea/firebagger sites.

Although i am FREQUENT visitor (everyday to this BEAUTIFUL site, I seldom comment, but I will be on the lookout for trolls!

THANKS, Chips, for an ISLAND OF BEAUTY/TRUTH in a sea of LIES/UGLINESS.

They should just call themselves Democrats or Liberal Conservatives. Tea Party has too many negative connotations – but their intention is good. People are waking up – there’s just too much hate out there.

Yes — I remember seeing a photo someone had posted when they were going door to door for the 2008 Obama campaign. They took a picture of a guy standing beside his pickup truck with a Confederate flag hanging outside his house behind him, and an Obama sign in the front yard! Not that he was necessarily a redneck of course — I’m just sayin’ he wasn’t your typical Obama supporter, if there ever was such a thing. I think my favorite part of the Obama & Biden events I attended was the chance to be with folks I might never run into in my everyday life, and we were all there with a common purpose and a common LOVE for the Obamas and the Bidens. Great times, and they are coming again!

I’m keeping a careful eye on that site. Outwardly they claim to be for PBO and all the “posts” on the site seem consistent with that view. However, when I first discovered the site a couple weeks ago, I noticed that there was a Romney ad link that when clicked took you directly to Romney’s fundraising website. I also noticed that they had recently joined Tweeter but apart from PBO and FLOTUS did not follow anyone associated with PBO’s campaign but followed a lot of Teaparty groups, RNC, and a couple “left” media folk such as Maddow and Schultz.. I then shot Axelrod a tweet alerting him to the site.

I checked back a week later and the Romney ad link to his fundraising page was gone. I’m going to keep monitoring them – I’m still not on completely on board, but I will give them the benefit of the doubt – for now.

        February 5, 2012 at 9:48 am

I don’t know anything about the site, but I do know that sometimes the site has no control over these ads. They come through google as part of a contract or something like that.

And does anyone know if this is true: clicking on the nefarious ad costs them money? I can’t bring
myself to pollute my computer that way, but if it is true I wouldn’t mind depleting their cash.

        • 20 Nefer
          February 5, 2012 at 10:27 am

My understanding is that those ads are geared to whatever sites you (the reader at the site) have visited. If you recently read a story about Romney, you might see a Romney ad (for or against). I was on a site where someone complained about seeing Ron Paul ads. At the same time, I was seeing ads for office supplies. I am not sure about whether the clicks cost them money. Like you, I wouldn’t mind costing the placers of nefarious ads money, but, eww, go to their sites?

Because my husband is a registered Republican (I know — but he voted for Obama, and Kerry!) we get lots of right-wing mail asking us to complete “surveys” and send them back in, with a handsome sum of money of course. I get a big kick out of stuffing their return mail, postage-paid envelopes with all the junk mail I can find, pieces of cardboard, etc. until I can’t squeeze in another slip of paper, then sending it back so they get to pay the postage. Childish, yes, but if they’re going to mail that stuff to my house, they will pay!

      • February 5, 2012 at 9:55 am

You know how it goes Hopefruit. They “supported Obama in 2008 but due to circumstances beyond their control they have suddenly grown disillusioned with him thanks to him saying, doing, not saying or not doing __________.” Now woes is them as much as they don’t want to they have no choice but to support a Nader-Smiley ticket with Norquist-Hamsher-West thrown in for good measure.

To quote a certain character from Lost In Space, “Oh the pain. The pain”

100% agree with David Axelrod. While they tear down their side with negativity and intra-party cannibalism, we’re building a formidable organization and ground machine that is enthusiastic beyond belief. Carry on GOP. Keep mucking up.

I have been thinking a lot lately about the ill effects of negativity and have made the conscious choice to focus most of my attention on the good work we are doing to organize for our goals as opposed to the actions and words of the scoundrels. I like to be aware of dirty tricks and downright wrongdoing but most of the time I try to keep my eye on the prize. It really seems to be important in my own work.

I think a lot of people are growing tired of all of these lies and venom type victory speeches. The repugs are really wearing out their welcome and they are just getting started. I hope the economy continue to improve so that their talking points get lost in the wind. Actually, I think people have already stopped listening. They are a party of liars.

      • February 5, 2012 at 8:06 am

Agree Cos. All the money in the world can’t make the ugly palatable. Tens of millions of dollars of Superpac money are buying one negative, smearing attack after another. Nothing good or positive or remotely hopeful. I hope people start turning off their tvs en masse in utter revulsion.

Those Republicans are beyond belief. Mitt in his speech said Obama ought to apologize to America. Just reading that line across the bottom of TeaNN , as the lying flip flopper spoke made me mad. President Obama has no reason to apologize to America, it’s those sorry ass Republicans who should apologize, starting with G.W. Bush, Dick Cheney, McConnell, Boehner, Cantor, the tea party. And they ought to apologize for the likes of Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Rick Santorum.

I’ve wholeheartedly abandoned MSM, they’re useless. They actually highlight diatribe and give it prominent screen space as if such vile musings are truthful. Like Newt referring to PBO as the “Entertainer-in-Chief” – they had that mess emblazoned across the screen like a newsflash on CNN. Hubby turned to CNN hoping to get more information on Don Corneilus’ tragic death. I’m done with them, period.

Chipsticks, first of all AGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! What the heck are those creatures??!!! Are you trying to give me nightmares? Lucky for you, the Lays Chips Ad with Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” came on in the nick of time. Love how they quickly made the Ad after PBO’s TOD Youtube version blew up the interwebs. So now, when I think of Lays, I equate it with PBO, and good times and I chow down some BarbeQ flavored Lays. 😀

Second of all, Chips you are a more patient person than me in regards to trolls. It took everything within me to hold my tongue and not let loose on the keyboard after that crap about Catholics and PBO losing their support. He has this Catholic’s support +1,000,000,000,000 and Newsflash! you were correct when you said that a majority of Catholics don’t take their orders from the so called Catholic leaders. A majority of us believe in gay marriage, are pro-choice, and strongly support a woman’s right to contraception. Bless your heart Chips, I would have just let loose a string of colorful and inventive four letter words. 😉

Don’t worry, as the campaign season goes on we’ll be on the look out for trolls.

    • February 5, 2012 at 12:38 am

Saw another commercial featuring “Let’s Stay Together” tonight — something called Home Away — a vacation rental business or something — really cute images of families on vacation. Then, tonight on the local NPR station, two ladies were singing a live “Let’s Stay Together” duet, sorta folk style, lol. Sales of that song must be through the roof.

It took just about every fiber in my being to compose a reply to halo’s drivel last night that sounded halfway respectful. The same “halo” said the same thing about Latinos many days ago – how he/she is hearing “from on the ground” that the Latinos are unhappy with PBO re the Dream act, and how PBO is losing their support. I showed Halo data showing that PBO had not lost Latino support but was at the same point he was the night of the 2008 election.

“Halo” yesterday concerned troll about the possibility of PBO staring a war in Iran. He/she has also concern trolled about the big money that Romney’s super pacs are raising and how the negative ads will work against PBO. A couple weeks ago, he was again at it with an already debunked CNN bullshyte outlier poll, when there were a sea of positive polls that he willfully dismissed.

I can smell Howard “halo” Fineman (my sources on the Hill or on the ground) concern troll bullshyte from 500 miles away!

Wow – Just went back to the “troll” thread and I’m not sure how I missed all that earlier, but I did! Couldn’t read all of it, but got the gist.

    1. I’m a life-long Catholic, too, and I’m 100% for President Obama and Democrats – whose values very nicely conform with Catholic Social Teaching, thank you very much. On issues where any of us disagree, I like to just remember PERSONALLY that THIS IS BLEEPING AMERICA and not everybody in this country is Catholic! Some people do not believe in religion, at all, and that’s okay because THIS IS BLEEPING AMERICA. A lot of people came here for religious freedom. And not all Catholics think exactly the same as each other, thank you again. 🙂

    2. Chips – So glad the … er … nameless, faceless individual with all the negativity is gone.

    3. Chips – Sidebar note – Think you were the one who brought up that PBO got more Catholic votes than John Kerry got. That reminder struck me funny, since – as I’m sure we all know – John Kerry is Catholic!

All’s well that ends well, as my grandmother used to say. Thanks for fighting the good fight, Chips, so we don’t have to … please hang in there!

Way to go willard, you soulless cretin.

Mitt Romney’s easy victory in Nevada’s Republican presidential caucuses might, in the long run, be less important than the fact that a surprising number of Republicans who could have participated Saturday chose to stay home.

Republicans’ disappointing turnout foreshadows difficulty energizing GOP voters in Nevada, a key swing state in November’s general election.

Turnout was unlikely to match 2008, when 44,000 Republicans participated in Nevada’s caucuses. Complete figures were not released by the state party as of 10 p.m. Saturday, an indication of a lackluster showing.

“It was less than what we had planned for,” Clark County caucus Director Michael Chamberlain said on KNPR.

    Dear Chipsticks,

You have accomplished something of considerable value and deserve respect and recognition for doing so.

The fakers are readily detected and my one suggestion is that when detected, by any of us, the two most important steps are to notify you and give them ZERO attention. I assure you this is not an uninformed recommendation having spent more than a year dealing with obviously paid, very insidious and disruptive trolls on numerous AJE/Disqus blogs doing 24×7 information and heartfelt support for Tunisians, Egyptians, Libyans, Syrians, etc.

Back in the day at the Orange Satan, there was a guy who came in and for months wrote positive things about PBO. He soon became one to get lots of ratings, (can’t think of his handle now), but all along he was a big troll. After getting himself well planted, he turned and was nothing about negative to PBO, even pushing that other suck puppet (can’t remember her name either), who constantly wrote nasty blogs about PBO before she was outed.

I think it was around last December they were both discovered at different times and expelled.

The guy acutally had a blog explaining about how he went to liberal blogs to inflitrate. I don’t know if anyone else here remembers that. I have since stop going there, but this was a big surprise to lots of them there who sided with him.

I guess that’s the way trolls start off with sugary comments and when you begin to see negative ones ease in, time for antennaes to go up.

Ok, I’m watching UP With Chris Hayes and he has Amy Goodman of Democracy Now on the panel. I have never hear Amy Goodman say anything remotely positive about President Obama. So I am curious to see how many nanoseconds it will take for her to criticize PBO for not doing (FILL IN THE BLANK).

Whether from a troll or not, my least favorite comment, by far, is the one which lists all the horrific, obviously false charges against President Obama listed in some email someone got from some relative or long lost friend which may or may not seek advice on how to respond. I can never figure out what purpose those comments serve, and if the commenter doesn’t know how to respond he/she hasn’t been paying attention. And there’s always the best option to those kind of rt. wing missives which is delete or just respond that you’ve decided to eliminate all dumb people from your life and please remove me from your list. But we probably don’t need to be made aware of every bit of hate and nastiness some goofball somewhere concocted. And it’s sick and stupid troll behavior. Reminds me of the callers who say, “I’m a lifelong Democrat, but no way can I vote for this failure of a president” etc. So transparent and fool no one.

Super Bowl! I got asked to some Parties, no thanks.
I like trying to dissect the game myself, without everybody asking me what inning is it!

    LOL!

As usual I’m late to these posts but just had to add my 2cents. LOL

I decided over a week ago she had to be a mole. I figured others did also, judging from the ‘rapid response debunking’ that came back at her inane posts. I just want to say you guys were damn good and brought a smile to my face everytime. It’s a big hell no to trolls, don’t mess the the TOD Brigade!

Keep up the good work and Thank you ChipsChica for using the rodent spray.

No to see if I can catch up on the morning thread before it too is obsolete. 😆

This is a great blog, but I have noticed that if one writes an opinion that is vastly different from others on here they are given multiple labels. Those opinions are dismissed quickly, and their support for President Obama is called into question. I think many people on here need to remember that there ARE 2008 supporters who voted then in 2010 that are upset, happy, gleeful, mad, confused and et al. Everything that the President, and his advisors does and says will not be viewed the same by people outside this blog. He will face tough questions from people that voted, canvassed, donated to him in 2008 in town halls this year. It’s not helpful if different opinions are just written off, because someone said they didn’t like a bill he signed or something he said. If someone posts what many on here might find legitimate concerns, I would think the best thing is to post back with links(articles) that helps that person with their concerns, which was done on the old Barack Obama Blog.

Britt, this is Chips site and we have rules and when someone goes against the rules they will be pushed the out, period end of story…

I am not trying to change the rules to this website. This is Chips’ website and she does a great job of allowing people to express various opinions. All I am saying is dismissing other people’s opinions that doesn’t mesh with others on here is not beneficial in general and to this campaign. I am not speaking in regards to certain commentators, but what I have noticed for months. Everyone is not happy about what is going on in D.C., and some people have legitimate concerns and anger.

And there are millions of places on the internet to express that anger. This is a pro-PBO blog. We come here to get away from that anger and vitriol and for those of us who are interested in the faux outrage of the day we can go to those other sites to see what people are saying , thus leaving this site free of the poison and angst.

It’s one thing to express genuine concern about a particular issue – our good friend BWD for instance has on several occasions talked about the “messaging” issue with this administration and we have never, ever questioned her loyalties to PBO or her sincerity about who she supports.

However, some people have been using widely debunked material from RW sites, obviously flawed polling data, and questionable anecdotes from various sources (e.g., my friend emailed me this, or someone on Facebook said that, or a lady at the supermarket said this) as “evidence” as a way of disguising their own negative feelings towards the President, and that’s where alarm bells start going off. When you make a blanket statement such as “Catholics are already suspicious of PBO” with absolutely ZERO evidence of that, you are not simply expressing an opinion – you are knowingly pushing false propaganda.

I would suggest you pick your spots. When everyone is feeling good or celebrating some good news about PBO and his administration, that’s the wrong time to express a negative critique. It feels like such comments are meant to intentionally demoralize everyone. It isn’t necessary to share everything that one thinks at the time. It seems that some commenters have no filter. They feel the need to share everything without regard for whether others want to hear it. In other words there are some things best kept to oneself. Just a suggestion.

“2008 supporters who voted then in 2010 that are upset”

Plenty of sites for the unrealistic, clueless to spill their poutrage. What part of “theobamadiary” do they not get ?

I just made up with my sister-in-law the authoritarian order take, and the very first thing she sends me is how her b-i-l in Chicago recommended that she dvr a FOX thing tonight about teh totalitarianism that’s on its way, and look out, and be very afraid. She’s my personal troll.
