Demonstrators gather in front of the White House, Feb. 4
Statement by the President on Syria
Thirty years after his father massacred tens of thousands of innocent Syrian men, women, and children in Hama, Bashar al-Assad has demonstrated a similar disdain for human life and dignity. Yesterday the Syrian government murdered hundreds of Syrian citizens, including women and children, in Homs through shelling and other indiscriminate violence, and Syrian forces continue to prevent hundreds of injured civilians from seeking medical help. These brutal killings take place at a time when so many Syrians are also marking a deeply meaningful day for their faith. I strongly condemn the Syrian government’s unspeakable assault against the people of Homs and I offer my deepest sympathy to those who have lost loved ones. Assad must halt his campaign of killing and crimes against his own people now. He must step aside and allow a democratic transition to proceed immediately……

Ezra Klein: The strangest thing about January’s jobs report is that it’s pretty much all good. The headline numbers are great, of course: payrolls are up by 243,000 jobs. Unemployment is down to 8.3 percent. But the inside numbers are good, too.
…. The report also deals at least a slight blow to the case for economic pessimism. For months, forecasters have been telling us that though the end of 2011 was strong for the economy, the data showed the beginning of 2012 would be weak. That could still prove true. But we’re not seeing a slowdown in January’s payrolls. Just the opposite, actually.
Which isn’t to say there aren’t some areas of concern…..
The bottom line is that this isn’t just a good jobs report. It’s a recovery jobs report. It’s showing the sort of numbers that win elections. As my colleague Neil Irwin tweeted, “That sound you hear is champagne corks in the West Wing.”

Expect we will be hearing from President Obama soon.
#PRESSON
Is this up to date, Bob? I see reference to NATO on the right side of the page
http://blogs.aljazeera.net/liveblog/Syria
df, “NATO” is indeed prominent in the tags on that blog and that’s consistent with how often both the blog posts and Disqus comments mention it.
A few things to know about the Syria and Libya blogs, in particular. They are being heavily attacked by paid spambots with truly hateful disinformation. We know who these folk are and friends of my are constantly flagging them and reporting them to AJE and Disqus moderators, but they are almost impossible to stop due to the nature of how Disqus functions. So, if you are not familiar with whom the legitimate folk are posting Disqus comments, you will be reading blatant Assad propaganda/lies. Plenty of healthy disagreement among the respectful and responsible participants in the discussion (just as was the case during the entire Libyan struggle for liberation last year).
#PRESSON
Thank you for you insights. I know that you have been passionate about the ME and their quest for freedom and democracy. I respect your thoughts and opinions on this 🙂
Thank you, df 🙂
#messages2syria #LandslideOBAMA2012 #YesWeMust
For those who tweet, it would be great if you used the #messages2syria and sent a few. Syrians all over the world, but especially in Syria, very much appreciate the out-pouring of support.
Thank you.

Goooooooo Giants!
Sorry GGail–Go Pats! 🙂
Enjoy the game defytheodds and may the better team win.
I hope it’s a high scoring rip-roaring goooooood game 🙂
No no no no GGail. It’s Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo PATRIOTS!!!!!! 😀
Hell yeah, Go Pats.
I am one of those who is neutral. I’ll be watching.
I am neutral as well, I won’t be watching! 🙂
I am neutral; I won’t be watching, and I’m a member of Athletics Anonymous. 🙂
WOO-HOO… GOOOOOO GIANTS!! My husband is a PATS fan so tomorrow should be really fun in our household!!
http://bobcesca.com/blog-archives/2012/02/the-socialism-bowl.html
Oh dear…should we tell them it’s socialism?
I have no dog in this fight, because my team, the Steelers, got Teblowed 👿 although I am rooting for the Pats because I want Eli to get humiliated in his brother’s hometown, and I gotta root for the underdogs.
“my team, the Steelers, got Teblowed” That’s too funny.
No worries, Brady will win & ease your “Teblow” pain…
Don’t count your chickens yet! The Giants are the real underdog given their record. That’s why I am rooting for the Giants. I want an upset. This is a hard choice for me because I have family both in Boston and New York.
No no no no no Nath. It’s Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo PATRIOTS! The Patriots are the underdogs here. The Giants stole their victory in 2008 and it’s time for some well deserved payback! 😀
Well UT, I love you so much, but I am still rooting for the Giants. I have nothing against your Patriots. In fact my cousin in Boston is angry with me. The reason I am rooting for the Giants is because the so called experts never expected them to come this far. No one gave them a chance against Green Bay. They were even regarded as underdogs against my beloved 49ers! I felt bad when they won but they gained my respect. IMO the Giants are the true underdogs. They are going against a team with the best record in the AFC, a legendary Quarterback and a Coach who is regarded as the best in the history of football. Any way, I hope the game will be as exciting as it was in 2008!
Look at this way UT: the Giants won in 2008, and so did our beloved President Obama. I am not superstitious or anything like that, but it’s rather strange that the same team that was not given a chance to win in 2008 and won is the same team repeating in 2012 when the President is up for re-election with all kinds of experts predicting his defeat. So, UT, I wish I could be with you and my cousin and her daughter in Boston, but I can’t! Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Giants.
Huh…where’s the “I don’t give a rip” poll button?
I agree. I am watching for the commercials and the beer.
Tried to find that one, TienLe, but without your genteel wording!
Ditto. My day to watch Lifetime, all day.
This!
I think I last watched a super bowl when GreenBay won Super Bowl II, was it 1967, guys? After that, traveling the world was much more compelling for me!
LOL Have to laugh at everyone’s semi indifference. That’s because it is now a contest between New England rivals. New Your and Boston fans are duking it out.
Reminds me of when the yankees & mets faced off in the world series. Huge news everywhere you went in NY & Jersey, but to the rest of the country it was ‘meh’
This is what it is with these two rivals with their rabid fans
YEAH BABY!!! GREAT DAY TODAY!!! Got more sigs for Pres. Obama on the PA ballot!!!
OUR TEAM DID ALMOST 1,000 this week!!! WHOOOOOOOOO BABY!!!! After church and Super Bowl parties tomorrow, I know we will top 1,000 signatures!!
Got new volunteers, new voter registrations!! Even had a lengthy conversation with someone about the “detention” issue. Referred them to Linda and her “What is Wokring” website.
I AM SO PSYCHED!!!
FANTASTIC…GLAD YOU HAD SUCH AN ‘O’ PRODUCTIVE DAY!
Thank you, thank you, thank you, for being Fired Up in Pennsy!
Definitely NY. I hate the Cheatriots lol.
Go Giants! Hopefully the right Eli will show up tomorrow 🙂
Oh hell no Collegekay. I’m going to have to duke it out with you. The Giants are the cheaters. They stole the Patriots victory in 08 and it’s time for some well deserved payback. Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo PATRIOTS! 😀
😆 😆 PS. Since my Eagles aren’t in the “Big Game” Where is the “don’t give a damn” side? 😆 😆
What do you think about Andy keeping Juan as D Coordinator?
whispering….. Andy shoulda left with Donny Mac.
Lol! One more year — let’s give him a full year 🙂
I’m along time Dallas Cowboys fan 😦 , and I can not root for the N.Y. Giants. So I guess I’m going with pretty boy Brady. 🙂
Anniebella,
As an Eagles fan, I suppose since I know your Obama heart, I can forgive you! 😀 We do have this in common — I can’t root for the Giants either!!
Why do you hate the NY Giants? Is it because they humiliated your Cowboys?
I feel your pain. Here in New Mexico I’ve had Cowboy Disease all my life. (55..yikes!) It’s an incurable disease i think. Once you get it you never get rid of it. I just WISH…..WISH they could have a NEW OWNER and get rid of that flamin jackass-jerry…and….and…AND…………maybe move to a deccent state???? The Albuquerque Cowboys!! Ok, that’s selfish. How about the Vermont Cowboys!!!???!
I have no clue about football. I’ll be cheering on the puppies on Animal Planet with Puppy Bowl 8.
I don’t care who wins either. I’m looking forward to a big bowl of seafood gumbo and Chiati wine. 😀
Aye, Aye, yardarm, am thinking of the very same thing!
I ALWAYS GO FOR THE UNDERDOG…UNLESS IT’S A REPUBLICAN..THEY’RE ABOUT AS LOW AS YOU CAN GET..I LET MY CAT KICK SAND OVER THEM!
I honestly feel sick to my stomach now.
http://3chicspolitico.com/2012/02/04/ron-paul-says-if-its-an-honest-rape-hide-yo-wife-hide-yo-vagina/
But but but but but LIBERTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTY! FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEDOM! THE CONSTITUTION! END THE FED! 😆 😆 😆 😆
I wish the flipping space ship would swoop down and cart his sorry ass off to who knows where…he can take his gold bricks with him…just GTF out!
They do NOT want his sorry-ass-piss-poor-throw-away DNA, he’s a reject.
True. He’s more than repulsive to me.
It is time for Ron Paul to go to his racists white town and retire. I am so tired of that man and his crazy ideas. I would be so ashame if he was Democrat.
Agree, but his runner-up Rand is not far behind.
ohhhh Annie,,,
i think he is a place holder for his son…
um,, uh, eh…. WHAT is an “honest rape” ? That’s IT!!! Not that I didn’t think it before, but this confirms it. Ron Paul is insane. For real.
it must be when the man thinks it’s a great idea, and the woman thinks it’s a hideous and vile assault on her womanhood and her human rights.
Ron Paul is clearly a sick individual. I pity those who follow him.
His base are the in bred from Appalcia.
Can’t you tell?
What would Paul have to say if it was his daughter or granddaughter who was rape?
I agree Ron Paul is a sick senile individual.
THEY SPENT $10 MILLION TO PUT SAND IN A STADIUM FOR AN NFL SUPERBOWL EVENT…AND IT WILL TAKE $5 MILLION TO CLEAN IT OUT! THE REPUGS. IN INDY HAVE RIPPED OFF THE TAXPAYER AND OUTSOURCED JOBS. I HAVE HOMELESS WITH NO TEETH…THAT’S WHERE I STAND ON THE ENTIRE SUPERBOWL SCENARIO!
What??? Sue, seriously, I’ve heard nothing about this. What’s the story behind the sand? I don’t get why they would need sand in the first place.
THERE ARE SEVERAL EXPENDITURES THE INDY STAR WON’T TOUCH OR THE MEDIA FOR OBVIOUS ‘REPUBLICAN’ REASONS. MY OTHER HALF IS WITH IMPD AND THEY GET ALL THE NEWS ON THE $$$$$$$ SPENT FOR THIS EVENT. THE POLICE ARE ALSO EXTREMELY UNHAPPY WITH REPUBLICAN TABS BUILT IN THIS CITY…DON’T BE SURPRISED IF YOU SEE SOME REAL SHAKE-UPS IN THE NEAR FUTURE. WHAT REALLY UPSETS ME IS THE FACT THAT THE REPUBLICANS HAVE SACRIFICED THE MIDDLE CLASS FOR THIS EVENT..AND YET WE STILL HAVE SO MANY COPS AGAINST PBO…BECAUSE OF ‘THE GOOD OLD BOY SYNDROME’ AND NOTHING ELSE. THE SOURCE ON THE SAND WAS FROM INSIDE THE DEPT….BUSCH STADIUM.
EVERYONE IS OF COURSE QUITE AWARE OF THE MILLIONS SPENT TO UPGRADE GEORGIA ST. WHAT WE REALLY NEED IS A GREAT INSIDER WHO CAN DIG UP ALL THE COSTS FROM DANIELS’, BALLARD AND OTHERS WHO HAVE PLAYED WITH THE NUMBERS IN THIS CITY FOR QUITE SOME TIME! IT’S DISGUSTING!
That’s is why as a SoCal resident I could careless about a football team when we can educate our young and take care of our poor. When we can do that then if the city wants to pay to let a team come here, let the owners pay for a top notch education and help the homeless.
I so understand Sue. What most people don’t understand is that the NFL is a socialist organization because they have profit sharing. That isn’t capitalism. Why don’t they use that money to help the people of the towns they are in. I am sorry Indy is going overboard for this. These people do not see the poor at all. Thank goodness there are people like you and all of us who will be fighting to keep these teapubs out of power. Blessings to you.
🙂 Yes. Did you watch my video post from upthread…explains it all so perfectly!
http://bobcesca.com/blog-archives/2012/02/the-socialism-bowl.html
Thanks for sharing that desertflower. I’ll pass it on!
Welcome 🙂
Sue, I understand where you are coming from, it is shameful.
Sue, Some people have no compassion for human beings after birth.
And, they’re definitely not concerned about the very poor…
WE HAVE 3,000 KIDS IN INDY THAT ARE HOMELESS…AND THE NUMBERS ONLY INCREASE…FASTER THAN WE CAN FIND HOUSING. DANIELS AND HIS CRONIES ARE DISGUSTING AND I’D SURE LOVE TO AUDIT HIS BOOKS!
I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST SPORTS…BUT THE PEOPLE IN THIS CITY HAVE TAKEN A BACKSEAT TO IT FOR YEARS. THEN THE CITY ENDS UP IN THE RED ON THEIR INVESTMENTS. THE MIDDLE CLASS IS OUT OF JOBS AND THE POOR ARE WANDERING THE ALLEYS. MY COMPLAINT ABOUT SPORTS IS THAT PLAYERS ARE PAID TOO MUCH…WE NEED SCHOOLS,INFRASTRUCTURE AND JOBS. IT’S THE TEACHERS WHO SHOULD BE PAID WELL TO EDUCATE OUR CHILDREN. OUR PRIORITIES ARE IN THE ‘FILL IN THE BLANKS!’ OUR PRESIDENT IS TRYING TO CHANGE THAT…THE REPUBS OF COURSE DON’T WANT PRIORITIES IN THE RIGHT PLACES BECAUSE THEY WANT TO POCKET PROFIT… PERIOD. THE SAME GOES FOR HEALTHCARE…PBO IS ON THE RIGHT TRACK AND I AM SO PROUD OF THEIR ‘HEAT’ TEAM AT THE WH…UNCOVERING ALL THIS MEDICARE FRAUD. THE REPUGS. DON’T WANT ANYTHING UNCOVERED. THEY WANT TO HOLD ONTO THEIR SPECIAL INTERESTS AND WILL SACRIFICE ANY HUMAN LIFE OR DESERVED HEALTH CARE IN ORDER TO GET THERE. GREED PERSONIFIED! I THANK GOD FOR OUR PRESIDENT. WE HAVE A MESS ON OUR HANDS CLEAR ACROSS THIS COUNTRY!
Beyonce is reportedly being offered $100 million to judge on the singing contest show, X Factor. Figure that one out. And try to justify it.
Dotster. Love ya, but please you should know those are rancid rumors from trashy tabloid magazines. She’s not being offered anything, Simon hasn’t contacted her, they’ve denied the crap story but tabloids want something juicy so they keep reporting trash. Don’t put some tabloid rumor on her and make it sound as though she’s some out of touch person who is gleefully and greedily bleeding people dry.
Well said, Sue. You put my exact feelings into words. It just seems so out of wack.
Like I was saying earlier…voter fraud. Done the republican way. Often.
http://progressiveerupts.blogspot.com/2012/02/gops-voter-fraud-problem.html
Bbbbbbbbut…ACORN!!
🙂 This puts ANYTHING Acorn ever did by mistake to shame! AND done on purpose, if you ask me…they knew EXACTLY what they were doing. Just thought they wouldn’t get caught.
TD..did you sign the petition about Brewer and worker’s rights??
No, I haven’t seen one. WherE do I go to sign one? I depise that woman so much.
http://www.signon.org/sign/attacks-on-az-workers?source=homepage
Yes. I hate this woman.
IT’S EASY TO SEE THAT THE PLOT ACROSS THIS COUNTRY IS FOR ALL REPUBS. TO UNITE AGAINST PBO AND THEY DON’T CARE HOW THEY GET THERE AS LONG AS THEY GET THERE. IN THE INTERIM…HE HAS THEM TOTALLY AFRAID BECAUSE HE IS UNCOVERING SO MUCH OF THEIR HIDDEN AGENDA! THIS IS GOING TO BE ONE HELL OF A FIGHTING ELECTION. IN BETWEEN…THEY HAD BETTER TAKE CARE OF AND WATCH OVER PBO…I DON’T TRUST ONE THING…DESPERATION IS DEADLY!
susan g. komen PR peeps are already on the case. Just saw a commercial on ION tv. Ha! 🙄
SGK knows that they ripped themselves a NEW ONE, after last week. They also know that folks will be on them like white on rice to see how much more BS they are willing to sling. As I’ve said in other threads, they will never, never, never. never. never. NEVER, NEVER (did I say never? I meant NEVER ) get one penny out of me.
I will never give them a penny or go to any event they sponsor.
i’m with you ison. me neither.
They have totally destroyed the pink ribbon brand. All in about 24 hours.
Too late. Can’t put that genie back in the bottle. Thank you, Ari Fliesher, for exposing them so nicely
TAMPA — Most of the political world was still buzzing about Mitt Romney’s overwhelming Florida primary win, as Ashley Walker rose from her seat one morning last week to address a room full of Barack Obama campaign Florida field directors gathered at the University of Tampa.
“We need to strive for excellence every day. Each day when we get up we need to think about what we can do to earn Florida’s 29 electoral votes for President Obama,’’ Walker, the Organizing for America Florida director, told the assembled operatives.
For Romney allies, who boasted of five full-time staffers — a fraction of what Obama already has in Florida — and a Florida ground organization that mainly consisted of mailing fliers to absentee votes, the scene in Tampa should be intimidating. Four years ago, Obama won Florida with the largest voter mobilization effort ever seen in Florida. This year’s effort could dwarf that.

Road block cable coverage for Ron Paul.
Msnbc has mostly a conservative panel.
Michael Smerconish is reasonable and was a big Obama fan in ’08.
The President and the First Lady will have a low-keyed super-bowl with just the family.
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/president-obama-lady-michelle-obama-daughters-low-key-super-bowl-article-1.1017062
MINE WILL BE AS LOW-KEYED AS YOU CAN GET…I WON’T BOTHER WITH IT…:)
I don’t watch football but DUH! – The New York Giants. Hey, I like it when my fellow New Yorkers are happy.
Gobrooklyn; look up…….look down……look left…………look right. Yup. That’s the sound of the Patriots whooping the crap out of the Giants. Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo PATRIOTS. 😉
Is Ron Paul ever going to Shut the Fuck Up?
Annoying mo fo!
It’s just that MSNBC is so bored covering other aspects of Nevada, including the other R candidates, they just kept running his remarks forevah. Hopefully, he’s done for the night.
Nope, he has a live interview with CNN, right now!
Speaking of Pres.Obama’s “neatness” . I remember watching an interview of the whole family and one of the daughters got hushed by then
Sen. Obama when she mentioned that he just tends to leave his luggage wherever and they end up tripping over it. It was funny.
I remember that, it was little Sasha….after that no more interviews with the kids. I thought it was very funny, they started piling on ol’ dad.
An hour speech by Ron Paul who is 4th in the Republican primary. All cable stations have stayed with him, even though he will Lose Nevada by 40 points.
LOL!
Steve Bridges As Pres. Obama

THANKS FOR THE LAUGHS MARTZ…I NEEDED THAT!
Will David Gerrgen drop out of his position (at CNN) tonite as rumored, for shitty punditry?
I lost respect for David Gergen years ago.
Gergen is a pearl-clutcher.
Dinner time- Carrabas Italian food- want some?
I do may I have a plate please.
If the Latino vote is up for grabs like msnbc is positing, we will get killed!
I doubt that is the case. Shoddy reporting!
I DOUBT VERY MUCH THAT IS THE CASE…THEY LOVE PBO BECAUSE THEY KNOW HE HONESTLY CARES ABOUT THEM!
Jovie, do you believe everything those people say?
Not even! Just can’t believe what I hear!
Well that would be the dumbest thing Latino voters could do. Sometimes I think Americans have Stockholm Syndrome.
Me too! Last polls i saw had the President with 70% of the Latino vote,
RIP Don Cornelius 1936-2012
MAY HE REST IN PEACE INDEED…IT IS SO SAD WHEN SOMEONE IS SO MISERABLE THAT THEY TAKE THEIR OWN LIFE!..:(
So True!
Sue, F/U to your comment: The way they say his life ended is definitely sad, but I chose to focus on the joy that Don Cornelius living brought to so many people. Many talented African American musicians who music we now enjoy got their start because of him. They had no way of getting on TV in order to get regular exposure until DC started Soul Train from scratch…So may he RIP, and I’m more empowered b/c of his living. Hopefully I can do the same for one other person, no matter how I might leave this life…
This is the way he use to enjoy the show:
“… and you can bet your last money, it’s all gonna be a stone gas, honey! I’m Don Cornelius, and as always in parting, we wish you love, peace and soul!”
– Don Cornelius, Host & Creator of Soul Train (RIP)
Meant to say “end” the show
MY COMMENT WAS MEANT IN A PRAYERFUL WAY…NOT A BAD WAY…I HAD FAMILY THAT COMMITTED SUICIDE..SO I IDENTIFY WITH IT WITH LOTS OF HEARTACHE.
I LOST MY AUNT AND UNCLE THAT WAY AND THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING I WISH I COULD HAVE DONE TO HELP THEM.
AS IT TURNED OUT..THEY DID NOT WANT TO BURDEN THEIR CHILDREN W/ THEIR HEALTHCARE…THEY WERE BOTH UP IN YEARS WITH HEALTH ISSUES!
Sue, so sorry for your lost. I’m sure you did all you could do. And just pray that their journey back ‘Home’ is a peacful one.
Sue, I hear you and feel you. And, I feel for DC family, your family, and any family that have had to deal with a love ending their own life.
We are ONE!
Thanks for the heads up.

Bummer if it’s true. It was just getting really ridiculous
He is getting pressure from his financier Addeldon, who said if Robney is the nominee he will dump millions into helping him win!
Yes…I just posted that little tidbit below.
Just logged in an was greeted with the Pres’s statement on Syria. Can anyone confirm if he went golfing or did stand up comedy today?
All joking aside, there’s some serious shit going down in Syria and not sure where Russia & China stand after US statement at the UN today. My shoulders are not big enough to carry the burdens this president bears daily. Keep the people of Syria, our armed forces and the President and his advisers in your thoughts and prayers.
ALWAYS…ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND THAT RUSSIA AND CHINA WILL STAY CLOSE TO THE OIL PUMP!

Watching MSNBC and I can’t help but think what a snore….It seems like they’re just killing time trying to make this interesting. I’m pulling for Noot and the Pats.
PBO and his team REALLY needs to get out in front of this Catholic Church issue or else it’s going to become “death panels” meaning no matter how many times they say it’s not true, nobody will believe them.
If it gets out of hand it could actually sway the Supreme Court decision as well about “mandates.”
And your point?
Umm…the SC decision decides whether PBO’s biggest domestic legislative achievement is implemented or not. Believe it or not, the SC is not sheltered from politics.
The administration has already responded by sending this days ago to any and every news outlet that will take it. http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2012/02/01/health-reform-preventive-services-and-religious-institutions
And they will keep repeating the items in that post any time they are asked about their decision.
I posted that same link this morning and sent it to as many people as I can. I’m just telling you waht I’m hearing on the ground. Message isn’t breaking trhough. You have to remember that Catholics are already suspicious of PBO. A blog post isn’t going to do it for them. They had the same thing for “death panels” but they let it linger and ultimately got destroyed for it and had to take it out of the bill. I’m just telling you that it’s a problem on the ground.
Halo, two weeks ago you were upset about some CNN poll and were accusing the administration of bad messaging. At this point whatever you are hearing “from the ground” has nothing to do with what the administration is/isn’t doing, but a product of some people’s willful ignorance. And I don’t buy that “Catholics are suspicious of PBO.” Some racist folk in the backwoods of America who call themselves “Catholic” refuse to accept that a Black man is in the WH – and there’s nothing you, PBO or I can do about that. It has nothing to do with messaging, but everything to do with these people’s twisted, ignorant bigoted minds!!
Ask the arch Catholic in the Vatican, Pope Benedict how he feels about PBO.
I WONDER HOW MANY CATHOLIC WOMEN ARE USING THE RYTHYM METHOD INSTEAD OF CONTRACEPTION…..
the ones you see with 15 kids.
Halo, it’s hardly true that “nobody will believe them” – the people largely doing the screaming about this issue are the very idiots who chose to believe the ‘death panel’ crap, ie the kind of people who never supported PBO any way, and never will, regardless. So, no loss there.
And I do laugh at the notion – which I’m reading everywhere these days – that all Catholics are outraged by the current issue, as if every Catholic holds identical views. They don’t – just as in most religious groups, Catholics range from very liberal to very conservative. And most Catholics I know aren’t overly keen on their church’s leaders these days, after all the ugliness in recent years, so the gap between them and their supposed ‘leaders’ widens all the time. The notion that they will all be ‘led’ in to opposition to the admin over this is ridiculous.
PBO won the Catholic vote 54-45 in 2008 (http://www.pewforum.org/Politics-and-Elections/How-the-Faithful-Voted.aspx), compared to Kerry’s 47% in 2004 – every one of the Catholics who voted for him knew he was pro-choice, for example, but it didn’t stop them supporting him.
Yep, I think the admin needs to work harder on getting the truth out on this issue, but I wouldn’t panic about it. I think of an old family friend who lives in Florida (Irish by birth, now an American citizen) – she’s 84, a practising Catholic, but long, long ago stopped listening to what her church preached ‘at’ her. Her relationship, she says, is with God, not with the Catholic men who so poorly represent him on earth. She voted for PBO last time, and she’s voting – with joy – for him again in 2012.
Halo, I only just saw your “you have to remember that Catholics are already suspicious of PBO” comment.
Seriously, where do you get this stuff? Politico? Vatican.com?
The only Catholics “suspicious” of PBO are the hardcore conservative ones who wouldn’t vote for him even if Satan was his opponent.
See my reply above – 54% of Catholics voted FOR Barack Obama in 2008 (higher than his overall vote of 52.92%), despite him holding positions on issues like abortion that are opposed to Vatican preaching.
Come on Halo, enough of this crap, please, you’re seriously making me wonder what you’re up to here by spreading dishonest bull like this.
Not a big fan of Joan Walsh, but she does some truth telling here.

Right On Chipsticks
Exactly, and thank you Chips for setting the record straight about PBO’s support!
As a Catholic in a family of Catholics, I can tell you that none of my family has an issue with birth control and we are all pro-choice. Sorry to ruin the stereotype, but Catholic women use birth control regardless of what the leaders in the church say (note, none of them can bear children). That does not mean pro-abortion, it means respecting a woman’s right to choose and to maintain control of her own reproductive choices.
We also believe in the moral imperative to aid those less fortunate, so we would never support a philosophy that hides behind ‘pro-life’ for only as long as that life has not yet taken a breath. I cannot ever respect any organization that pretends to be ‘pro-life’ yet does nothing to aide unwed mothers, assist with their medical care, or care for the children they bear if they decide to continue with a pregnancy.
“We also believe in the moral imperative to aid those less fortunate, so we would never support a philosophy that hides behind ‘pro-life’ for only as long as that life has not yet taken a breath.”
And that’s why I love ‘liberal’ Catholics, they actually take the time to read their bible, rather than Sarah Palin’s tweets.
Thanks Cathy.
🙂
Thanks Chips.
I am what’s commonly referred to as a “lapsed” Catholic. I refer to myself as agnostic. My new sister-in-law is a religion teacher at a Catholic high school. She’s saving up to get her tubes tied, as obviously she can’t get it covered through her insurance. Most Catholics are like her, I would wager.
I’m a very lapsed Catholic too, LL. But sometimes I wish I wasn’t because I can see the amazing good the genuine people in the church do – but, of course, they’re the very people who are ostracized by the church because they have the cheek to actually believe in the teachings of their bible.
It’s just incredibly sad that so many so-called ‘believers’ choose an opposite route, promoting nothing but hate and contempt – against Jews, Muslims, Mormons, etc, etc.
Hey, I have issues with all faiths, especially the one I left – Catholicism – but twisting your Gods’ teachings to promote ugly political agendas and prejudices? Spare me.
Thank you so much, Chipstick for this beautiful statement. I am a lapsed Anglican who was married to a Catholic, and I totally share everything you said.
“It’s just incredibly sad that so many so-called ‘believers’ choose an opposite route, promoting nothing but hate and contempt – against Jews, Muslims, Mormons, etc, etc.

worth repeating
@hopefruit Do you honeslty believe that the President and his team did a good job with messaging regarding “death panels?” Do you honestly believe that the President and his team did a good job messaging the ACA or pushed back on the LIE that he “cut $500 billion from Medicare benefits?” We lost 2010 because we got killed on this issue. It doesn’t matter how many times you try to correct it once it gets cemented in the consciousness of Americans. The fact that people like the component parts but not the acutal bill tells you the whole story. More than a majority are still against the bill, even with a bunch of stuff coming online helping ALOT of ppl. That’s a fact. You can bury your head in the sand about ACA messaging, but I call it straight without sugarcoating.
@Chipsticks Catholics, who are SWING VOTERS, supported PBO in spite of him being pro-choice because he had strong leaders high up in the Church advocate strongly for him. Teddy Kennedy and Bob Casey also helped boost his appeal up to 54% because they served as a great surrogates. Without them he would have gotten equal to or even less support than Kerry, just like Dems usually do. The leaders in the Chruch knew PBO was a good man who would take their beliefs seriously whlie also blaancing governing. They also voted for him because they were scared to death of Palin. Those SAME leaders who went out on a limb against the Catholic establishment to support PBO in 08, strongly advcoated in the Church for the ACA, and met with PBO regarding this issue. Now, fairly or unfairly, they feel like they have been blindsided. I for one think it’s ridiculous, but it’s a FACT that the leaders who supported him feel like he left them hanging out in the cold.
This isn’t some crazy idea. I am Catholic. I hear it in my Church. I hear it in my community. It’s a bubbling issue that has made many Catholics uncomfortable. The fact that Hopefruit just says it’s because they’r “racist”…I don’t even know what to say to that. Not EVERYTHING against PBO is “racist.” That just does a disservice to the people who are actually racist like the Teabaggers and just makes people laugh at you bc you call everything racist. Catholics obviously aren’t monolithic and dictated by the Chruch, BUT Catholics take religious service and teachings very seriously, and you have to be sensitive to an issue like contraception.
Look, the fact of the matter is this election is going to be CLOSE. like 51-49 close unless there’s an economic miracle of 300k+ jobs/month. Catholics make up a large part of the Rust Belt and PBO NEEDS them. They are susceptible to GOP lies. PBO has alot going for him with the Auto Industry and Manufacturing, but it’s doubtful he can win 54% again. He needs every vote and going back to Kerry with 47% is not going to cut it.
I’m just telling you that Liberals ignore and dismiss sensitive religious issues too quickly and at their peril. Simply telling people to read a BLOG POST on whitehouse.gov or blaming the media for not reporting the facts is not going to do it. And I would appreciate it if people stop reflexively ATTACK me for reporting relevant facts about what I am hearing. Alright, I’m done.
Again, I am not saying the admin is wrong. I am saying their MESSAGE and REASON is not cutting through the emotion surrounding this issue in a culturally conservative demographic.
Halo, I am also a Catholic, and I have MANY close friends and family who are Catholic and they don’t endorse any of the GOP’s lies, so I can just as well make the claim that I am right based on “what I’m hearing on the ground.” However, I would rather go with what the national data shows, rather than anecdotes.
1. First of all, PBO was NOT on the ballot in 2010, so your bringing up 2010 makes absolutely no sense in this discussion of President Obama’s prospects for 2012. You bring up 2010 (a midterm election) when PBO wasn’t even on the ballot, yet you conveniently dismiss Chips’ actual data showing that PBO won 54% of the Catholic vote in 2008 (more than John Kerry’s 47% in 2004!) And it wasn’t the ACA that caused the GOP to win in 2010. It was high GOP enthusiasm from the Tea Party phenomenon (which has since fizzled out), the high unemployment rate, and the normally low turnout for minority and youth voters who tend to be majorly Democratic voters and who made up a sizeable chunk of PBO’s base in 2008.
2. There were all kinds of rumors about PBO in 2008 that he was a Muslim, socialist, pro-abortion, pro-gay, etc..yet Catholics voted for him by a significant majority. Why would they vote for Mitt Romney in 2012 simply because of the latest silly rumor? And no, I don’t see everyone who disagrees with PBO as racist, which is why I don’t believe that Catholics as a group “are suspicious of PBO” It was you who made that blanket statement, not me. Carolyn Kennedy just endorsed PBO…and she’s Catholic isn’t she? So is EVA Longoria who has always been a staunch PBO supporter.
3. The Affordable Care Act represented a huge change from the status quo. That in itself is a scary thing to many people who are suspicious of change even if it’s change for the better. The ACA will become more popular as time goes on simply because more folks will have experienced the benefits with none of the frightening elements they were told about by the Republicans and the GOPMEDIA.
Halo,
“Do you honestly believe that the President and his team did a good job with messaging regarding ‘death panels’?
The point you won’t acknowledge here, Halo, is that the ‘death panels’ bullshit was generated by the likes of Palin and her brain-dead, bigoted supporters. Do you seriously believe there is ANYTHING the admin could have done to dissuade THOSE creatures – and their cheerleaders at Fox, etc – of their ‘PBO wants to kill Grannies’ theory?!?!
Come on! Frankly, f**k them, the best messaging on earth wouldn’t sway THAT constituency, so why are you concerned about them?? They wouldn’t support PBO even if you paid them a billion dollars each.
Did PBO’s team do a good messaging job on the ACA?
No, absolutely not – there’s a great story to be told here about the impact of ACA, and the admin has to do WAY better telling it, but I think you’re being hugely naive about the opposition they face in spreading that story. There are SO many vested interests here, it’s a miracle that we see a single positive ACA story. And you KNOW that.
“You can bury your head in the sand about ACA messaging, but I call it straight without sugarcoating.”
Calling it straight is perfectly fine, repeating RW talking points that have absolutely no basis in truth (eg “you have to remember that Catholics are already suspicious of PBO”) is just troll shit. I’m not the brightest, but I’m not THAT stupid.
“Catholics, who are SWING VOTERS, supported PBO in spite of him being pro-choice because he had strong leaders high up in the Church advocate strongly for him. Teddy Kennedy and Bob Casey also helped boost his appeal up to 54% because they served as a great surrogates. Without them he would have gotten equal to or even less support than Kerry, just like Dems usually do.”
I’m not sure where to start with this. I loved Ted Kennedy …. but are you honestly telling me ‘fervent’ Catholics were swayed by his endorsement?
Seriously?? That’s just comical!
“The leaders in the Church …. feel like they have been blindsided (on ACA) … it’s a FACT that the leaders who supported him feel like he left them hanging out in the cold.”
Really? I’d love to know – what are your sources telling you, what is it exactly about the ACA that so offends Catholic ‘leaders’??
“It’s a bubbling issue that has made many Catholics uncomfortable …. Catholics take religious service and teachings very seriously, and you have to be sensitive to an issue like contraception.”
You’re being funny now, right? You DO know 98% of Catholics ignore their church’s teaching on contraception?? You clearly have NO clue about Catholic views, AT ALL!
The religious world I live in, even though I’m chronically lapsed, is Catholic … your account of that world bears NO comparison to the reality. So, I think you’ve made it up, in a comically crap kind of way.
Halo? We’re done. You were evidently distraught about the encouraging job news (“but, but, but…..”), and this latest avalanche of ‘Catholics hate PBO’ Fox crap is just embarrassing.
You’re a troll, as I’ve suspected for months. You were covering it well for a while, but that excitable ALL-CAPS tribute to the serpent that is Jeb Bush the other night – “a great public servant” – (was drink taken??), kind of blew your cover.
I wish you well, bye.
HAND SALUTE. PIPE THE SKIPPER ABOARD! PREPARE THE SEA AND ANCHOR DETAIL……..:-D
Thank YOU Yardarm 😉
Oh my garsh! Thank you. I didn’t know how much longer I could hold my tongue.
Sorry gobrooklyn, I should have ended this nonsense ages ago!
Thanks, Chica. I had gotten to the point where I just skipped her/his posts.
Isonprize, I was warned by good people here, so sorry I took so long to act – I was too eager to give the benefit of the doubt, when it was obvious we were dealing with a troll.
Isonprize, I am glad I was not alone in skipping halo’s posts as she/he always found away of twisting everything negatively while pretending to be concerned with the President’s messaging. All praises to our incredible host for finally hitting back at the toxicity of halo’s posts that were cleverly designed to appear to be supportive of the President when in actuality they were attacking him and spreading negative views about people who actually support the President.

Best of luck Halo, I wish you well – but I don’t think we’re on the same ‘side’. Take care.
TOD. I’m Catholic. Think PBO rocks. Votin fer him.

Thanks africa, I seriously loathe Joan Walsh, but that article was more than worth linking – the best bit was the stat that 98% of Catholics use birth control.
So, 98% of Catholics go against Vatican preaching.
Say no more!
I’m one of those people who is glad that my mother didn’t get the hang of the rhythm method…else no Tien Le. My 87 year-old Catholic Priest uncle is all about me volunteering to help re-elect the President.
Well Tien, My 31 year old daughter who is Catholic is one of the strongest supporters of the President. Although I am not Catholic (I married a Catholic) I know many Catholics who enthusiastically support President Obama. I am glad that your “87 year-old Catholic Priest Uncle” supports your work in helping to “re-elect the President.”
WASHINGTON — The United States’ plan to wind down its combat role in Afghanistan a year earlier than expected relies on shifting responsibility to Special Operations forces that hunt insurgent leaders and train local troops, according to senior Pentagon officials and military officers. These forces could remain in the country well after the NATO mission ends in late 2014.

Mitt Momoney is endorsed by the Chump, Rick Santorum endorsed by Sharon (crazy lady) Angle, so that leaves Noot getting the endorsement from the Bunny Ranch girls (it’s legal in Nevada you know).
I could see Noot showing up with the girls from the Bunny Ranch, one on either side, and Callista in costume right along with them.
Ewww – what a sight to imagine!
🙂
HAVEN’T YOU HEARD? FOR REAL…2 WEEKS AGO THE BUNNY RANCH IN NEVADA ENDORSED RON PAUL..THERE WAS A PICK OF THEM ON CNN…’PIMPING FOR PAUL!’…FOR REAL!
Forgot about that. Oh, well, these R candidates are all interchangeable, anyway. I’m sure the bunny ranch girls won’t care. Nor do I.
Ron Paul would make them have their babies…if it was an “honest” rape.

VIDEO: Ambassador Susan Rice calls out China and Russia
U.N. Security Council fails to pass resolution on Syria
=================
United Nations (CNN) — As international anger grows over reports of mass carnage at the hands of the Syrian regime, a U.N. Security Council draft resolution condemning Syria failed to be adopted Saturday after veto-wielding members Russia and China voted against it.
Ambassadors from the other permanent members of the council — the United States, France, and the United Kingdom — said they were furious at Russia and China for failing to halt the worsening, bloody violence that has consumed the Middle Eastern nation.

INDIANAPOLIS — While Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels held off Saturday on appointing a permanent replacement for the state elections chief convicted early that morning of voter fraud, Democrats said they planned to move quickly to wrest control of the politically powerful office from the GOP.
A jury from Hamilton County, just north of Indianapolis, deliberated for 13 hours before convicting Republican Secretary of State Charlie White on six felony charges. Among other things, White was accused of lying about his address on voter registration forms.
Indiana law does not allow felons to hold statewide office, and Daniels quickly appointed White’s chief deputy, Jerry Bonnet, as interim secretary of state. But the governor said he was holding off on naming a permanent replacement because a judge could reduce the charge to a misdemeanor, allowing White to regain the office.

NYT: Associates Say Adelson Open To Aiding Romney
A report from the New York Times says that billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, a major benefactor for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich in the Republican race for President, is very much open to supporting former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in the general election, and is willing to donate much more for the Republican nominee when they are chosen. Adelson has already given five million to Winning Our Future, a super PAC supporting Gingrich’s candidacy, as has Adelson’s wife, Miriam Ochsorn.
rupaul is 2nd place in NV with 4% in ? Will he upset the applecart today ? Will noot boot himself out tonight ?

Medicare and scientific research, two things Republicans want to cut to give Donald Trump another tax break or corporations another handout, are right this very moment saving my father’s life. There is a reason we fund these things. Anyone who wants to argue with me about the validity and necessity of funding both of these endeavors can quite simply go fuck themselves. Hard.
Real people. Real issues. Real important.
Saw Josh Romney, the third oldest, interviewed on CNN. He did use “President” Obama when he talked about him, which I appreciated. Cute-looking guy with good manners.
That said, he looks like another Romney animatron. Barely blinks. Keeps the old dead smile on his face; only the lips move. Eyes have a dull stare. (I’m NOT just being mean here – it was scary, but not quite as bad as Mitt scares me.)
When asked if he were going to go into politics some day, he said “No, I’m raising five kids and having a lot of fun doing that.” His bio says he’s got an MBA and is a “real estate developer,” so I found his answer just a little bit lacking. Shouldn’t he have said, “I’m in real estate, taking some time out to get my dad elected,” as a grown man of about 37 years old would say? Or, when not campaigning, does he just have his wife peel him a grape, while the five kids run around his lounge chair by the pool? Are any of these people contributing to society?
a “real estate developer,”
Wonder if he buys up property like foreclosed homes then ‘develops’ them by renting them out or reselling them, while having lots of fun raising his kids?
OH! His Dad’s idea! I see how this works now 🙂
I guess they don’t work. They don’t have to. They living tax-free off $100 million.
Breaking news: Rick Santorum changed from his bolo tie to his RED regular-guy tie, and he’s still in Colorado. Claims his campaign is going to auction off the RED tie. He’s desperate.
I love how concerned the GOP is about “uncertainty” in the economy due to the president’s health care reform or due to Dodd-Frank, however when it comes to bombing Iran or staying in Afganistan, there’s no concern for how uncertain those little adventures would be…
just a thought…
Everyone knows we don’t have to pay for WARS! Silly rabbit…
GOP is only concerned about one thing: Power. They don’t give a damn about anything else.
Then he and his wife interacted warmly with them, thereby displaying their people skills.
Indeed.
Media hardly ever run an entire speech by President Obama, live, but tonight I’ve had to mute a full Ron Paul speech and a full Rick Santorum speech – neither of which anybody wants to hear.
Let’s all work hard, get President Obama re-elected, and on election night, we’ll know THIS LONG NATIONAL NIGHTMARE is over.
Here, here!

I know how we all look forward to the Super Bowl commercials…but be warned. They have no shame.
http://motherjones.com/mojo/2012/01/aborted-fetuses-randall-terry-super-bowl
Update: A Chicago NBC station has balked at running Terry’s ad. Meanwhile, here are some of the cities where viewers can still expect to see one of the ads during the Super Bowl festivities, according to Terry:
During the pre-game show: Eau Claire, Wisconsin; Kansas City, Kansas/Missouri; Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; St. Louis, Missouri; Tulsa, Oklahoma
During the game: Ada, Oklahoma; Grand Junction, Colorado; Joplin, Missouri; Paducah, Kentucky; Springfield, Missouri
These people cry about liberty and freedom, but only as long as it’s their brand. They don’t care that some kids innocently watching the game will be traumatized by those ads. I wonder how many people will be convinced by those ads.
I have no patience for these extremists tonight.
I hear you. Wonder how they’d feel if they saw “death by coathanger?” This makes me livid!

http://motherjones.com/mojo/2012/02/romney-beautifully-rich-people-staton Quote from a supporter:
It’s kind of hard for Romney to come across being a regular Joe. But put him in a room full of 400 business guys that are all successful, that relate to him, he comes off beautifully.
The NEVADA GOP turnout is much lower this year compared to 2008. The media is not really talking about that. They are so desperate to prop up Romney.
And they say we have an enthusiasm gap. While they’ve been conducting their caucuses and primaries aka clown shows, the volunteers, caucus, and primary voters (not voting now of course) on our side have been turning up in huge numbers, beating expectations and beating the turn out in the GOP crowd for 08 and ’12 and with an overwhelming deluge of enthusiasm.
Sucks to be the GOP.
Makes sense. They’re hoping to deny everyone other race the chance to vote come November.
LOL @amk..good one:-)
Has anyone seen the percentage of the Hispanic vote for Romney? I heard that no special arrangements were made for the people working on the strip, i. e. voting arrangements as related to time.
5% I read somewhere – down by 3% from what it was in 2008!
Thx Hopefruit.
I heard a snippet of him on the radio yesterday saying, “there’s a good chance I might become President”. I screamed just a little at the thought.
🙂
And, thank you for the RTs!!!!

Things that the media knows about the GOP NEVADA Primary but won’t tell you tonight.
1. 84% of voters were OVER age 40
2. 69% OVER age 50
3. 90% White (88% in 2008)
4. Youth vote 3% LOWER than in 2008
5. Latino vote 3% LOWER than in 2008 (although the number of Hispanics have INCREASED since 2008)
6. Jewish support shows no increase from 2% in 2008 to 2% in 2012
Thanks for this truth buster hopefruit. The GOP have problems in their camp. All the hate that they preach is manifested in the exit polls. They had no diversity, the electorate was almost 100% white and older and a majority of them were rabid teabaggers. Great going GOP. Way to appeal to America.

I can’t stand Mitt Romney. He’s even worse than McCain.
His advisers are Cheney advisers, very mean!
per teh google
At the end of December, 395,845 active Republicans and 446,679 active Democrats are registered in Nevada.
If just 50% of dems turn out, PBO sweeps NV.
GOTV — we can do this!
Without a doubt, one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever heard anyone say, let alone a Member of the House of Representatives of the United States of America – ‘honest rape’ – foul, totally evil.

On the upside…now when some flip-a$$ed college kid tells me she or he is going to vote for Paul, I won’t have to battle their denial about his racism. I can just ask them to define ‘honest rape’ for me.

Chuck Todd and Repugs are not being honest with Mitt’s whole “I am more American than you” lines in his stump speeches. The GOP’s whole line of attacks on POTUS is he is not one of us, which has nothing to do with being born in Hawaii, it has more to do with five black people living in the White House, and everyone should be afraid. This is not a post-racial, color blind country despite what many say. The GOP is going to race bait come the general election like we have never seen before. They are going to use code languages regarding the Obamas’ ethnicity.
willard still can’t break the 50% mark even in his own party.
anything less than 50 percent, even with this anemic, low-turnout affair, would show that Mitt can’t motivate half of Republicans to support him.
from the orange place
Apparently they’re still waiting for Clark county which is projected to put Mitt over the 50% mark….that’s what I’m reading, but I will wait and see.
Doing some math based politico’s result site – some 33 K votes are to be counted. Of which, 22 K are needed to put him over the 50% mark. That’s 2 out of every 3 votes. Think he can do that ?
thinkprogress Romney says Obama should apologize to America for his job performance. Did Romney apologize to Mass for being 47th in job creation?
