halo, I just type in First Lady Obama appears on Ellen Degneres Show. I found the push up challenge, and I found were FLOTUS comes out dancing, then they talk about POTUS dancing, Ellen ask if the kids can dance? Ellen says she loves POTUS but he is not as good of a dancer as FLOTUS is, then FLOTUS says but he can sing. Do you think Chipsticks can find it? I’m so sorry you miss FLOTUS on Ellen show. She was great as usual.

I can’t believe how upset I’ve been over the who defunding of Planned Parenthood by the Susan G. Komen foundation. It is so disheartening to see how far the right wing permeates into various parts of our society. I always assumed the pink ribbon people were a-political…strictly focused on breast cancer issues. This move, upon the addition of that Palin-loving failed gubernatorial candidate from GA, is so nakedly political…it stinks. Gotta add Planned Parenthood to the list of people/organizations to help in any way I can.

      February 2, 2012 at 11:22 pm

vero804, THAT’S WHAT’S UP!!! We have to support Planned Parenthood. They help so many women who can not afford basic gynecological care. AND they do breast cancer screenings!

    • February 2, 2012 at 11:32 pm

I was really shocked to find out tonight that Komen is also defunding embryonic stem cell research at a number of large universities like Johns Hopkins. I noticed they have not defunded Penn State who is under investigation. I guess the investigation closed or Komen lied. You are so correct about the RW permeating everything…universities, state legislators, governors, etc. etc. We have been asleep. We did not recognize the threat. We are going to have to do more than re-elect PBO!

        February 2, 2012 at 11:45 pm

Yes…one thing that the past 3 years have shown is that even though the president hasn’t been perfect, he is not “the problem” with Washington. The problem is that the right wing has tentacles all over the place and they can shape things toward the right in a way no single man could ever defeat or counterbalance.

        • February 3, 2012 at 12:47 am

No one is perfect. There is no script to life. It’s a work in progress and Our President is doing better than any that I can think of in my lifetime.

          • February 3, 2012 at 1:01 am

Yes – I think it would be near impossible to find a President who has been “perfect” or even near perfect. I would challenge anyone to try. This President has been simply amazing. His work ethic is superior to most. His efforts have been beyond anything anyone else would have imagined or dared, and the results speak for themselves, for those willing to look. His attitude, demeanor, respect for others – unmatched. His “mistakes” – totally debatable, and since he actually ran for, and won, the presidency – he gets to decide.

I totally agree that the right wing is the problem – that statements stands alone.

              February 3, 2012 at 10:34 am

theo67, everything you said is so true and all I have to add is in addition to the “RW being the problem” so is the money that corrupts our democracy…we need to get them both out and it won’t happen in one, two, or three years…it took 40yrs for the rw to permeate every facet of our society and not for our good, so it will take that long or longer…long after PBO’s 2nd term. Once PBO is re-elected and we have Dem controlled house and senate, we need to work hard for the next mid-term and next election of a good Dem president. We must stay active and focused.

Meet the woman who got Komen to defund Planned Parenthood

…attention has focused on its Vice President for Policy, Karen Handel. She joined the group last January after a failed run for governor in Georgia, where she had advocated defunding Planned Parenthood.

But there’s another woman who deserves equal credit: Americans United for Life President Charmaine Yoest. It’s her group that issued a report last fall, “The Case for Investigating Planned Parenthood,” that led to a probe by the Energy and Commerce Committee.

Yoest has run Americans United for Life for three years. She came to the group from former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee’s presidential campaign…

Chips – Wow. Just a magnificent video, and a great way to close out the evening, more or less.

Hard to pick, but my two favorite photos are the one of the President and First Lady as they walk “alone” toward Marine One in casual clothes (like any other couple – ha!), and the other where he has given her his jacket and is leaning toward her and everybody else standing around them are trying to divert their eyes!

In addition to the fact that we can tell the love you have for them through your video and everything else you do, isn’t it OBVIOUS how much the photographers love taking these images of such great people?

  22. February 2, 2012 at 11:32 pm

Chips, did you edit this video???? That’s the BEST!!!! Our president has it bad for this First Lady and who can blame him? He is head over heels in love with her. No wonder he just brushes off the hate. He’s got this amazing wife and two daughters and Bo to go home to every night.

The expression on her face, CLASSIC! And she told Babawawa that he was not allowed to tease her…. All I can say is thank heaven they have each other, and thank heaven we have them, and thank heaven we have CHIPSTICKS, to show us how it’s done! Just made my first ever donation to Planned Parenthood, but it won’t be my last. Also, had to write a paragraph on Facebook about what Planned Parenthood does in answer to a young woman who was glad the Komen foundation withdrew funds. I’m afraid many young women…20’s…don’t understand the difficult obstacles women have had to overcome to get access to health care. They need to be educated. I’m old enough to remember the basementn coathanger abortions poor girls had to get. We do NOT want those days to come back.

    • February 3, 2012 at 7:11 am

I remember them too, Carolyn and I’m afraid too many states are all too anxious to have them come back. There is so much hatred of women among right wingers, it’s truly disheartening.

      • 74 desertflower
        February 3, 2012 at 8:12 am

I remember. Sadly. Young women (and men) today have NO IDEA what “used to be”…they have always taken this for granted and have no idea that women died…alone and in back alleys. At their own hand, or at the hand of a backroom “doctor”…… Wealthy women fly off for a “spa” day…poor and middle class women get butchered. Just another way to discriminate. More have’s and have not’s.
Don’t get me started first thing in the morning…this issue is a passion for me…..too early to make me get worked up 🙂

I agree with both of you. NOT going back there!

This video is a masterpiece. This is my favorite Adele song and I just love Adele. My husband likes her too so her music is often playing in our home. The perfect choice for a video of Barack and Michelle Obama. I just love the slow motion part where he whispers some sweet nothing in her ear at the game, then laughs and puts his arm around her and kisses her so sweetly. I was actually grinning from ear to ear watching that. I’m now all warm and fuzzy.
    Thank you 🙂

This is slightly old news, but I’m still verklempt re: Caroline Kennedy’s email about President Obama’s reelection (how I wsih former NY governor David Paterson was a person of simple common sense; if he had even a *lick* of sense, we could have had this terrific woman as a US Senator now)

    *******

Four years ago today, I joined my Uncle Teddy and thousands of excited students at American University to endorse Barack Obama as the next president of the United States.

Barack Obama had stirred something in young people and the young at heart. I saw the passion in my own teenage children, and I heard it from a different generation of people who said they felt like they did when my father ran for president.

We felt strongly that we needed to elect a president who urged us to believe in ourselves, who could tie that belief to our highest ideals, and who understood that together we can do great things.

Four years later, as I think about what first inspired me to support Barack Obama, I’m proud we have a president who has fought hard for the values Teddy held dear, and stood up on issues that matter.

Will you join me by saying what first inspired you to stand with Barack Obama?

Teddy understood that the challenges of health care aren’t political — they are personal. That’s why he fought for 40 years to make health care a right and not a privilege for American families.

How proud he would have been to see his candidate sign the Affordable Care Act into law as president, giving all Americans the security of knowing that their health care will be there when they need it most.

In his speech four years ago today, Teddy reminded us all of that bright light of hope and possibility that shines even in the darkest hours. He knew that with Barack Obama as president, America would shine again. I don’t think he would be surprised to know that four years later, this president would have ended the war in Iraq, repealed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and guaranteed women the right to equal pay for equal work.

The 2012 election will be harder than the last. As you think about what role you can play this time, I want you to remember that when Teddy joined this campaign, it wasn’t just Barack Obama who drew him in.

    It was you.

The possibility of a campaign run by ordinary people determined to change our country for the better and willing to work as hard as necessary inspired him then, and it’s what inspires me today.

    Thanks for all you do.

    I’ll see you out there,

    Caroline

P.S. — If you’d like to take some time to watch that speech, it’s here.

(Reuters) – The United States indicted Wegelin, the oldest Swiss private bank, on charges that it enabled wealthy Americans to evade taxes on at least $1.2 billion hidden in offshore bank accounts, the U.S. Justice Department said on Thursday.

The announcement, by federal prosecutors in Manhattan, represents the first time an overseas bank has been indicted by the United States for enabling tax fraud by U.S. taxpayers.

The indictment said the U.S. government had seized more than $16 million from Wegelin’s correspondent bank, the Swiss giant UBS AG, in Stamford, Connecticut, via a separate civil forfeiture complaint. Because Wegelin has no branches outside Switzerland, it used correspondent banking services, a standard industry practice, to handle money for U.S.-based clients.

President Barack Obama will renew a request for $5 billion in his 2013 budget to encourage local law enforcement agencies and fire departments to hire military veterans who have served since the Sept. 11 attacks.
The president will make the announcement today during a visit to a fire station in Arlington, Virginia, that was among the first to respond to the Sept. 11 attack on the Pentagon.
“The generation that volunteered after Sept. 11, 2011, has been called ‘the next greatest generation;’ our country owes them a debt of gratitude,” Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki said on a conference call yesterday previewing the announcement. “We must ensure that veterans who come home from Afghanistan and Iraq get the opportunities they deserve.”

    Dems raised more in 2011

It wasn’t supposed to be like this.

When Republicans took over the House in a stunning 2010 landslide, it seemed a given that money would rain down on the newly ascendant party.

But Democrats dominated the cash dash in 2011, with the party’s campaign arm consistently outpacing its GOP counterpart. And during last year’s fourth quarter, more than a dozen upstart Democratic candidates outraised the incumbent Republicans they’re hoping to unseat — an early indication that momentum is shifting in the challengers’ direction.

Republicans aren’t panicking yet. Independent analysts estimate that if the election were held today, Democrats would be far short of winning the 25 seats they need to retake the House. And, Republicans point out, it’s not as if the National Republican Congressional Committee had a bad fundraising year — they raised $54.5 million compared with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s $61.4 million. Democrats simply did better.

But as the 2012 playing field solidifies, House GOP officials say fundraising is emerging as a serious concern. House Speaker John Boehner and other GOP party leaders are expected to address fundraising when Republicans gather for a closed-door conference meeting at the Capitol Hill Club on Wednesday.

Can anyone explain to me, with the miserable Republican field of candidates for President, why people will not look to our President to vote for? I hear so many complaining about Romney, or Santorum, or Gingrich. I do not understand.

Well poo on them. I pray it continues to go down and Romney will be spinning in the wind trying to figure out how to convince the Country he should be President.

    http://blogs.reuters.com/david-cay-johnston/2012/01/31/romneys-gift-from-congress/

When the Romney campaign disclosed in December that the couple’s five sons had a $100 million trust fund, I suspected that, in setting up the fund, the Romneys used a tax strategy that allows some very rich people to avoid paying gift taxes. But it was impossible to know if this was the case without seeing their tax returns going back years.

So when Mitt Romney released the family’s 2010 tax return last week, I went looking. I found a hint on pages 132 and 134 of the return. It showed that the value of property placed that year into another family trust, the Ann D. Romney Blind Trust, was, for tax purposes, zero. The Ann Romney trust is not the same trust as the one that holds the Romney sons’ $100 million, but I wondered if the Romneys used the same approach in prior years when it came to valuing property placed into the sons’ trust.

Reuters emailed the Romney campaign spokeswoman to ask how much the Romneys paid in gift taxes on assets put into the sons’ trust over the last 17 years. The spokeswoman, citing Brad Malt, the Romney family tax lawyer, answered: none.

Slow and steady is what the Obama Administration wanted and that’s how this recovery has been so his caution is okay with me but the impact on the American publics psyche will be very positive. If the country starts to feel that things are improving they will spend and invest and more importantly they will want to stay with the policies that are bringing about that success.

        • 196 utaustinliberal

With the way the economy is steadily improving, if the GOP doesn’t approve the pay roll tax cut, in an election year, they are effectively signing the seal on their own unemployment and handing the House of Reps on a platter to the Democrats. In other words, let them be stuck on stupid and pay the consequences.

Woo Hoo! job numbers for January in. 243,000 new jobs…over 100K than expected. Unemployment drops to 8.3, which exceeds expectation that it would stay at 8.5 Adjustments for December seasonal layoffs show no impact on the January numbers. Manufacturing is strong. These numbers are best since Feb 2009.

Hahahahahahaha. It’s hilarious watching Chuck Todd flail and writhe in anger and negativity. He can’t accept the fact that there is no bad news when one looks at individual sectors of the economy in the jobs numbers. Healthcare added 31K jobs, manufacturing added 50K jobs, construction added 21K jobs, professional/business services added 70K jobs. He was questioning Mark Zandy over and over again. Is this bad? Is there any bad news in there to report? Are you sure you’re correct when you say if the jobs numbers keeps improving or stays steady that PBO will be elected? Are you sure there’s not going to be nay bad news next month. Zandy kept repeating…no, no, no ,no. No bad news period. If the economy keeps improving/stays steady PBO will be re-elected. Chuck Todd haz a sad today! 😆

    From Greg Sargent:

Next up on jobs: Obama today will unveil $1 billion in funding for a new Veterans Jobs Corps, but perhaps this bit is more interesting: “Obama is also expected to announce that the budget to be released this month includes $5 billion in funding proposed in the American Jobs Act to spur police and firefighter hiring in 2012.”

This, of course, was voted down by Republicans in Congress last time around.

If the Republicans were working with President Obama I do believe our economy could be in much better shape. Many more people could be working, but it speaks volume as to what kind of people these Republicans are, when they were, are willing to let people suffer just for political reasons. Their agenda have been to stop Obama, they don’t care who suffers. And that is what is so sick about them. If the situation were revised I do believe Obama would work with them for the good of the American people who need help. He would put the welfare of this country and it’s people first.
