Morning Chips and everyone! BWD posted FLOTUS’s speech at a fundraiser yesterday. I just love this quote:

“And that is where he gets his passion. That is where he gets his toughness and his fight. And that’s why, when he faces those hard moments, when it seems like all is lost and we’re all sweating it, wringing our hands and sweating him — “Oh, lord, Barack” — (laughter) — “What you going to do now?” “Oh, no!” — because I’ve done it, too. (Laughter.) Barack Obama never loses sight of the end goal. He sees it. (Applause.) He never lets himself get distracted by all that chatter and noise. He just keeps moving forward. (Applause.)”

It’s truly uncanny! My theory is that due to some eccentric components of his childhood, POTUS developed the ability to detach–that’s what enables him to think and behave rationally during chaos. Really brilliant man, and I love love love FLOTUS for recognizing, nurturing, and balancing these detachment characteristics. I 100% believe that the only reason that this country did not descend into a seocnd Great Depression is POTUS’ steadiness and rationality during chaos (he seems to even flourish in chaos). McCain would have lost it.

  23. February 2, 2012 at 8:30 am

Sorry for going O/T, but my blood is boiling after reading this ….. from the guy who never stops speaking about God:

MSNBC: ….. presidential hopeful Rick Santorum took a hard line on Wednesday against government getting involved in offsetting the cost of drug prices.

…. Santorum was prodded by members of the 300-person crowd to take one last question from a young boy standing in the front row. The child asked what the candidate would do to lower the cost of medicine. Santorum… said it was the cost of drugs that allowed for the innovation that keeps Americans with life-threatening illnesses alive.

“People have no problem going out and buying an iPad for $900. But paying $200 for a drug they have a problem with – that keeps you alive. Why? Because you’ve been conditioned in thinking health care is something you should get and not have to pay for. Drug companies, health care companies need to have a profitability, because if they don’t, then how are we going to regulate costs? ….”

… The mother of the child yelled out that she was going bankrupt just to pay for her child to keep breathing. It wasn’t clear what the boy’s condition was.

Santorum: “…… the bottom line is, we have companies with the incentive to make those drugs. And if they don’t have the incentive to make those drugs, your son won’t be alive and lots of other people in this country won’t be alive. We either believe in markets or we don’t.”

…. When members of the crowd protested what they called the exorbitant cost of the medicines they need, Santorum maintained those prices are what is keeping Americans alive longer.

“You have that drug, and maybe your life today, because people have a profit motive to make that drug,” he said.

He has no understanding of the difference between profit and wholesale gouging of consumers. Honestly, these people worship money above all. Makes me sick.

    • February 2, 2012 at 8:37 am

Unbelievable. Past time for Santorum to GO.

    • 68 utaustinliberal
      February 2, 2012 at 8:43 am

Shit likes this makes me want to smack the crap out of every middleclass, working class, minority (of every stripe) who constantly votes and puts in power assholes like Santorum. How dare he look at a child who is suffering, a parent who is suffering and be so cavalier about their pain, their suffering, their hurt. He is able to take care of all his children due to the kickbacks he slyly profited off from Pennsylvania and from peddling influence the same way Gingrich did.

He’s a scumbag of the worst order. He is one more evidence of why I look at people in leadership and everyday life who call themselves republicans and support/ascribe to such sick platforms.

      February 2, 2012 at 8:52 am

What a jerk. Why did he use ipad as example? That was a cheap shot at our President who embraces the use of technology. Why didn’t he say TV, or jewelry, or even guns for that matter?

    • February 2, 2012 at 9:04 am

Santorum is digging his own grave. Take all the R candidates together and you could not squeeze an ounce of compassion out of them. This was the most insensitive, mindless answer he could have given. Even ‘born-without-a-heart’ Newton has more sense than this. If you are going to shill for the fat cats in the pharmaceutical industry (and they all do) you need to be a little more subtle about it. Santorum is stupid.

    • 75 gn
      February 2, 2012 at 9:13 am

I’ll echo the brilliant and charitable rootless and simply hope that we continue to quickly evolve into a country in which folks like Mr. Santorum are able to receive the mental health services which they require. We’re on the right path for that with Obama Cares, and will hopefully continue to come together, reelect the POTUS, and stay on the road of positive evolution.

(That’s all I got in terms of a positive thought–my other reaction is full of expletives and venom lol).

    • 77 prettyfoot58
      February 2, 2012 at 11:13 am

      these folks have no heart…

you would think that he would understand given that he has a child with special health needs…but he doesn’t and then to say all this to a child….

there are fundamentalists like Santourum who have these extreme ideas….and because the republican party has moved so far to the right…these extreme ideas are taking on legitimacy….and because of that…the danger becomes to keep the country from moving to the right as well…

as has been noted before…Ronald Regan would not be welcomed today’s Republican…..neither is Colin Powell….

      WE WON’T GO BACK….

    • February 2, 2012 at 12:28 pm

WTF is that man on!! How can he compare the cost of an ipad with the cost of drugs that keep people alive!! A person on low income who can not afford $900 for an ipad don’t buy one and their life or health is not endangered by them not owning one BUT illness does not discriminate between those with wealth and those who live on modest or low means who could face bankruptcy in order to keep themselves or a family member alive, therefore his analogy is completely wrong. Free market economics has it’s place but it is NOT in the provision of and the cost of healthcare. All I can say is thank God for President Obama and his ACA and with people like Santorum standing for the Republican nomination I am more determined than ever to do my small part to help re elect your wonderful, compassionate President.

You gotta love PBO. He points out that helping the poor, helping the middleclass, helping our fellow citizens who’ve served in the army shouldn’t just be about talk (hint: GOP) there should be action. It is our moral duty to help one another. It is his (PBO) moral duty to help those who’ve been screwed by the banks, it is his moral duty to make sure those who’ve been screwed by mortgage brokers/lenders are helped. It is his moral duty to see to it that students with loans, seniors on a fixed income shouldn’t shoulder the burden of the economy, that the rich should pay their fair share. He fundamentally believes in: I am my brother’s keeper, I am my sister’s keeper. We should all care for the least of us and speak up for those who can’t speak for themselves.

Boy oh boy do I loooooooooooooooooooooooove this man as a human being and a leader.

    • February 2, 2012 at 9:22 am

PBO is telling them how put their religion in practice.

    • February 2, 2012 at 9:23 am

Religion is not an abstract idea for him. He puts his moral values into action each day. He once said that he uses prayer to guard against pride and to guard against complacency.

    • February 2, 2012 at 9:46 am

It was so beautiful–a perfect description of the way your faith and your heart should be reflected in the way you live your life and the choices you make in your work. He was able to connect his policies and beliefs in a seamless whole without disparaging anyone else or any other religion. He was MODELLING respect for others, even as he sadly acknowledged that we so seldom show respect to each other in daily life (especially in so-called political debates). This is a man who talks it and lives it and who makes the slimy “preachers” in our state houses and Congress look like the hypocrites they are. I’ve always said about PBO that he makes you want to be a better person to live up to the standard he demonstrates in his private and public life. He lifts your spirit and makes you feel you can reach higher than you thought you could. Bravo, Mr. President, Bravo.

Note: Sanctimonious Santorum preaches his religion all the time, wanting to shove his beliefs down your throat. Then he comes up with a nasty statement about why people should be happy to pay overinflated prices for drugs.

Mittens Robney is a bishop in his chosen church and spends the bulk of his adult career raping companies and undermining jobs, then has the gall to tell us he doesn’t care about the poor.

Newton Leroy chooses religions like wives, has spent his life spewing hatred and nasty insults and has nothing but open contempt for people of color.

Our president REFLECTS deep seated religious values in his life and promotes fairness and kindness in his policies.

And whose religion is constantly questioned by so-called evangelicals and Christianists?

Romney stock trades clash with divestment pledge

    Thu, 02 Feb 2012 08:46:37 -0500

WASHINGTON (AP) — During his presidential campaign in 2007, Republican candidate Mitt Romney promised that a trust overseeing his financial portfolio would shed any investments that conflicted with GOP positions toward Iran, China, stem cell research and other issues. But Romney’s family trusts kept some of those stocks and repeatedly bought new investments in similar holdings as recently as 2010, when they were sold in advance of his latest White House campaign, a detailed review of Romney’s financial records by The Associated Press shows.

    This man cannot be trusted.

  54. February 2, 2012 at 9:28 am

TheWinningProgressive has a few terrific links to organizations which we can support in lieu of the Komen Foundation (and their unfortunate choice to stop funding Planned Parenthood). I followed one of the links to PP and made a donation. I hope that donors more than match the money that Komen is withdrawing. Womens’ health seems to consistently be under attack (especially as relating to the relatively poorer and younger women who rely on PP for gynecological services) and it feels nice to do even a little something about it.

    • 142 57andFemale
      February 2, 2012 at 9:50 am

PP was close to replacing the Komen grant after the first day.

I felt sorry for Cecile Richards on LOD last night: she was pulling her punches because she wants to repair the relationship, but I can just imagine what she says in private!

I’m enjoyingJjennifer Granholm’s show on Current and caught the end of Countdown with david Schuster. Liz Winstead didn’t pull any punches, that’s for sure! She nailed Komen and the corporatization of charity. She flat out said that we don’t need any more cute little pink ribbons for ‘awareness’, we need real health care for real people.

We’re so broke, having not brought in any income for a few months. I’ll have to contribute next week.

      • February 2, 2012 at 10:12 am

I’m telling you, the mindlessness of that decision continues to take my breath away. As someone at POU noted, the women who go out of their way to participate in the walks, buy products with the pink ribbons, etc. are the exact population of people who are in vigorous support of PP and the services which this organization provides to disproportionately poorer and younger women. The evangelicals are not the Komen Foundation’s base (for lack of a better word). Great to see you, sheri, and everyone here at TOD!

It’s sad but I actually don’t think republicans would care. This is truly sad. I pray that this young girl isn’t deported. It already enough that she has lost so many relatives but to have to return to a country alone she hasn’t known in years is devastating.
I know all to well about this pile-up. It was close to my hometown. One of my highschool friends was involved in the wreck.

So sorry to hear about your friend that was involved. Hope they are alright. I read over at CNN that she will NOT be deported. Thank goodness. I’ll say a prayer for her.

The President’s Prayer Breakfast speech was mesmerizing. Bless you. President Obama. Bless you and all you do.

Good morning everyone 🙂 It was a joy and an encouragement to see our First Lady along with Ellen do pushups. It truly Inspired me to get down on the floor, and try, which I did do twenty without stopping, whewwwwwwwwww. Of course, I’m old enough to be Michelle’s Mom, but the point Is, that she motivates me to be more aware of exercising, and to watch my eating habits. I’m proud that we have a First Lady, who cares about People, and their health. She cares about a lot of GOOD things really, like *Joining Forces*, Military families. She’s a very positive Mentor, and an example. She and President Obama will be lonnnnnnnnnnnnng remembered 🙂

President Obama’s message at the prayer Breakfast was a heart felt message to me. Quite moving, especially him telling about his Christian Journey, and how he prays, and how he met with Rev Billy Graham, and their praying time together. What a humbling President we have leading our Country. Lord God, I truly thank you, for sending the Obamas our way 🙂

My 90 year old evangelical Christian mom adores Obama and has been a big supporter since the democratic primaries. She is normally very mild mannered but gets quite annoyed during her Bible study class if a few of the ladies start talking trash about the president. In fact, my Mom asked that they not talk politics at all. I am grateful that my mother is gung-ho for Obama because I live with her and it would be a big challenge for me if Fox news was her wheelhouse.

Senator Tom Coburn at the Prayer Breakfast and at the same time blocking funding for the 9/11 Memorial? This is just one example of his obstruction. For me, he has broken the hypocrisy meter. This is why there was something incongruous about some of the words spoken at the Prayer Breakfast.

President Obama was magnificent. What I love about him is that his words are in lockstep with his deeds.

So many hypocrites there, ladyhawke. Sessions too. These people attack our President for simply breathing, they don’t want people to have health care or be helped in any way then get up there and claim to be Christians. It’s awful.

Reality show host Donald Trump is set to endorse Newt Gingrich Thursday in Las Vegas, according to a report by the Associated Press.

Trump, who has flirted with his own presidential run and at one point last summer was leading the GOP polls, could help the fortunes of the former House speaker, reeling from a tough loss in the pivotal Florida primary.

Gingrich was coy when asked about the possibility Wednesday, saying he had  “no idea what the Donald is going to do.”

Other than our PBO, this breakfast doesn’t sound very prayerful to me. Sounds like a bunch of posers.

Pamela, your sense is correct. It is sponsored by “The Family”. Google the Wikipedia entry. PBO was magnificent, but the group is very right wing.

The Stock Act has stalled in the Senate and will never see the light if day in the House.
Well, senior Senators are worried it will interfere with their plans for a job on K street, after they Senatorship!

Good morning all, make the best of today. May God bless you all and our First Family.

So, the GOP is probably going to hold a contempt of Congress vote, because they feel that the WH has not given them enough documents on Solyndra.

Or, maybe they got nothing and they are pissed off!

I just saw FLOTUS on Ellen Show and she was the star as usual. She came out and did alittle dancing. FLOTUS is just a nice person.

DeMint to Romney: Love the Poor By Shredding the Safety Net

But Romney is also taking flak from conservatives who thought his comments about the “very poor”—and particularly his efforts to defend himself by pointing out that the “very poor” do benefit from “safety net” programs—showed too much interest in helping those most in need.

Here’s what Sen. Jim DeMint chose to say to Roll Call:

I would say I’m worried about the poor because many are trapped in dependency, they need a good job; they don’t need to be on social welfare programs….

I think all of this is a teachable moment for America. I think Bain Capital was, and I think he finally turned that around and showed some confidence in his success, and we need to do that here. We do worry about the poor when they’re trapped in government dependency programs and the education system’s not producing the skills [and] character for them to succeed, and I think it is an important thing for him to backtrack on that. I don’t think anyone thinks he doesn’t care about the poor, but I think he’s trying to say they’re taken care of right now with these programs. Those are the programs that are hurting, not just the poor, but our country. We need to address it at every level.
