  5. February 1, 2012 at 8:34 pm

Just commented on the previous thread. She’s so charming — can’t help but love her. I loved the Jay Leno interview, especially the segment talking about her singing husband and her oh-so-classy comment about Willard’s attempt. Couldn’t have been more perfect. She’s gonna be unstoppable (once again) on the campaign trail. Go FLOTUS!

Love both of them!!! Is Ellen really 54?!

Your bday must be the 7th, Mac. Happy Bday in advance. My bday is the 8th. Our bdays are close! When my husband was alive and our kids were kids and home with us February was quite the celebration month. I kicked the month off with my bday, then there was Valentines Day followed by my husbands birthday shared with George Washington the 22nd of Feb. followed by our third child’s bday on the 23rd. We used to kid about her being his bday gift. It was one big celebration month!

    What up TOD fam.

Damn guys this Don Cornelius death really saddens me. It’s like losing a fam member. Two thing you’ll find at any Black wedding…a preacher and Soul Train line.

This might just be the best article I’ve read on the impact of Don Cornelius.
β€˜Soul Train’s’ Don Cornelius put one nation under groove

And for anyone who cares to know, BET is showing the documentary Soul Train:The Hippest Trip in America. And Centric will be showing classic Soul Train shows starting tonight at midnight!

    • February 1, 2012 at 8:41 pm

I’ve seen that Soul Train documentary before — it’s a really great film. I grew up watching Soul Train, and have danced many a Soul Train line. Damn. RIP, Don Cornelius — Love, Peace, and Soooouuuulllll!

    • February 1, 2012 at 8:48 pm

May Don Cornelius Rest in Peace. I loved Soul Train and I am not African American.

      February 1, 2012 at 9:22 pm

He was an icon. It’s very sad losing him. May he rest in peace.

    • February 1, 2012 at 9:39 pm

The best way I can describe it is in the words of Cedric the Entertainer.

“Any African American gathering, it was official you had to close it out with a prayer and a Soul Train line. You gotta give it up to Jesus, and then Don Cornelius.”

Seriously. I could go on and on…lol

      February 1, 2012 at 10:22 pm

It is like losing a family member. Soul Train was “MUST SEE” TV every Saturday morning in our household. Probably dating myself, but it came on right after the Jackson Five’s cartoon TV show. My cousin got on Soul Train once back in the day; she saw the O’Jays perform “For the Love of Money”. She was just so insufferable after that! πŸ˜†

RIP Don, it WAS a “stone gas” honey, and as always in parting, we wish YOU love, peace and soul.

Michelle Obama is amazing! She didn’t look winded or tired. I think she could do 100 pushups!

I’m just now reading posts and following links. Chips, did you see the picture of the dog at DogsAgainstRomney.com? They’re calling it Crategate. You probably already posted it. I’m behind, but in case you haven’t I liked the St. Bernard

I feel so good about the political process right now. The President has the chance to talk about what he wants to do, to take all the steps he can and he is the loving, caring, competent contrast to the GOP meltdown in the primary. I think low information voters are waking up. And the best news to me is that once people understand that the media hasn’t been giving him a fair shake, I think they will question what they hear in the future and hopefully look for better sources of info. I think this is happening on the left as well as the middle. I don’t know about the right. The far right/Libertarian agenda is out in the open and people like the President and Elizabeth Warren are explaining that government is necessary and provides so much to the average person.

I just received the attached in my email.

Do you remember where you were on Inauguration Day?

I do. It was bitter cold in D.C. and we met up very early — 5 a.m. It was still dark that January morning when we left to go witness history together.

That day was proof that anything really is possible.

All those nights talking about it, waiting, working for Barack Obama and others who had paved the way before him — and it was here. Our community had come together, and our candidate was about to move into the White House. We hugged strangers and danced in the street. We were freezing, but we didn’t care — this day had come.

The pride we felt wasn’t just about the color of his skin, or my own.

It was about a candidate who stood up for people in the middle class and those struggling to get there — someone who skipped the corporate career path to start working on the South Side of Chicago, helping jobless workers in the shadow of a closed-down steel mill.

African Americans have a huge role to play in this campaign because we intend to finish what we started. When people ask why we should elect President Obama again, it’ll be up to us get his back, tell the story of what he has done to help our community, and then sign them up for the work ahead.

Today, as our nation kicks off African American History Month, the campaign is launching African Americans for Obama. Will you join?

When President Obama took the oath of office, our economy was losing jobs at a record pace. He inherited a system that allowed a shrinking number of people to get ahead while the rest of us fell behind.

So he went to work for an economy where hard work, not just wealth, is rewarded. And despite some very real challenges, we’ve seen progress that reflects our shared values as a community:

    — Secured $3.4 billion to support more than 1,100 contracts and financings for African-American businesses through the Minority Business Development Agency.
    — Invested $2.5 billion in HBCUs and minority-serving institutions and doubled funding for Pell Grants their students rely on.
    — Saved more than 1.4 million jobs in the auto industry alone, which supports tens of thousands of middle-class jobs for African Americans.
    — Passed the Affordable Care Act, extending health coverage to 7 million more African Americans and investing billions in community health centers.
    — Passed a payroll tax cut for 18.5 million African-American workers.
    — Invested in education and early learning programs like Head Start.
    — Put in place protections against unfair practices by payday lenders and check cashers — predatory businesses that disproportionately target African Americans.
    — Helped more than 57,000 African-American families get permanent mortgage modifications; required mortgage companies to offer 12 months of forbearance to qualified unemployed borrowers; and assisted more than 1 million Americans with rental costs, moving costs, and utility bills through the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-housing Program.

If that doesn’t get you going, remember we’ll be facing an opponent who could not be more out of touch with the needs of our community. Yesterday in Florida, Mitt Romney said, for the second time, that we shouldn’t step in to stop fraudulent foreclosures, and he’s previously said that if he were president he would allow investors to come in and make a quick buck instead.

In some ways this election is more important than the last.

Throughout the campaign, you’ll be able to join your local neighborhood team as a barber shop and beauty salon captain, congregation captain, or black business captain, or organize at your historically black college or university.

African Americans for Obama will be our Obama family for the next nine months, and beyond that for a second term. Sign up here:

    Michael Blake
    Operation Vote Deputy Director
    Obama for America

P.S. — The President has some words for us on the launch of African Americans for Obama. Watch his message, sign up, and then pass this email on to your friends and family who should get involved, too.

I listened to every word he spoke and took it to heart. I stepped back up and started working again–to pass health care, repeal DADT, worked on the Dream Act (this year it passes) elected a Dem. Senator–got my picture taken with the President!!! Now my team is really stepping up and finding all of our volunteers and working to make sure we have four more years with this great President. The only problem with all of this rage among Republican candidates and RWNJs like Donald Trump is that there may be rage left over when the “winner” (aka the loser who lost less) has to compete with President Obama.

      None of this is good.

We are at our destination in Fl. Just have to report that on the last leg, we came upon the cutest older couple—in their 70’s, my guess—-with a brand new Obama 2012 bumper sticker on their brand new Lexus. This was on Fl. primary day. I rolled down the window, gave every positive feedback gesture I could muster in a hurry as we passed—–the thumbs up, hands clapping—–and he gave a big smile and did the thumbs up and his wife was waving. It’s so fun to connect with other sane people, and they don’t always look as one would expect. Obama supporters come in all varieties.

Someone rear-ended my car last week. One of the firefighters saw my 2012 bumper sticker and while we were waiting for the police, he whispered to me that he’s a life-long Republican, but he’s voting for President Obama, and he did in 2008. He said that he’s never voting Republican again. And that the President has done so much, and the Republicans have made things so much harder for him. It was quite touching – I’m not sure the other firefighters agree with him, since he was whispering…

This is bad for Mitt Romeny. Trump is not a major figure in the Republican party, but him siding with Newt shows that the crazy right wing still doesn’t like Mitt, despite his desperate pandering to them. The GOP has been going with the meme, “Be afraid of the black man in the WH,” but that is not working, since their base is not turning out to vote for their four candidates. Depsite the billions lined up behind Mitt, he is not appealing to the right wing base.

Jim Moran (D-VA) called out Allen West (R-FL) who said that President Obama and those of us who support him need to get out of the country on Martin Bashir. Moran said that West isn’t representative of the African American community and compared President Obama to the Lion King, the GOP to the laughing hyenas. Obviously he struck a nerve, because the comments on Mediaite are nothing BUT attacks on Jim Moran.

Bashir also pointed out how the GOP calls Sarah Palin “Governor Palin,” Newt Gingrich “Speaker Gingrich,” but refuse to refer to Barack Obama as “President Obama,” and Jim Moran said it’s because they are insecure. I’d also suggest it’s because they are racist, as this is the first President I’ve witnessed who has been referred to from the right as “Obama,” “Obummer,” and other racially tinged versions of his name that I refuse to post here out of decency and respect for TOD.

It’s sad because one women’s group has been pitted against another due to politics. I think I heard that someone new, high up in the Komen administration, recently ran for some political office as a RWNJ. They deny the decision was political, but nobody believes them.

The very dignified president (Cecile Richards?) of Planned Parenthood was on LOD tonight. She mentioned they have received 6,000 donations from small donors since the Komen announcement. They’re setting up a special part of their fundraising to go to breast cancer screening, specifically because they lost this funding. I saw on Twitter that some people are donating to PP, asking that their acknowledgement cards go to Komen.

              • February 2, 2012 at 1:12 am

Curious. Someone called me from a “Woman-to-Woman” defeat-breast-cancer group, looking to fundraise… ironically just as MSNBC was reporting on Komen’s decision.

So clearly, not everyone was taking this change laying down.

A quick poll from Washington Post

Has the contentious Republican primary helped or hurt the party’s chances of beating Barack Obama?

    Helped – 18%
    Hurt – 64%
    Made no difference – 18%
    Total Votes: 2,134

    • 155 nintendowii10
      February 1, 2012 at 10:20 pm

Good, I hope this primary goes on all the way to the convention in August. This will be their John Kerry election cycle, where the party’s nominee is too bruised and weakened to face and defeat the incumbent President in the general election. I see a lot of surprise red states being in play: Arizona, Texas, South Carolina (they don’t and won’t support Romney) to name three.

Apparently noot is contesting the FL primary results on the rightful reason that goopers rule sez that no state shall have winnah-take-all primary before april.

Go noot. Fuck the rnc and mittens.

I believe this will be far worse than John Kerry. Kerry was 100X better than Romney as a candidate. And it’s an insult to compare PBO with Bush in 2004. The only reason Kerry didn’t win in 2004 is that the voters were deceived by the MSM who allowed the GOP to get away with swiftboating. Romney will lose because he’s an inferior candidate running against a superior candidate period. He couldn’t even beat McCain in 2008. PBO is a very shrewd master campaigner and has totally left the MSM irrelevant. Voters are a LOT more aware about the MSM’s antics. Twitter, YouTube, Facebook etc are far more prolific and efficient at correcting misinformation and getting the facts out.

Chips get out the naughty mat. Lawrence just showed clips of PBO walking around the auto show without his suit coat. Shot from behind with his hands in his pockets. Lord, I need a fan.

Well, I can’t do any pushups. BUT my FLOTUS has made me commit to being able to do 20 in six months. She is such an inspiration.
