Truly, yardarm, I have just noticed that my list for my daughters include mostly character traits. I am sure that there are decent young men out there like him. Obviously, Our Beloved President is just showing so many examples of these traits. I know that my daughters can have what Mrs. Obama and Malia an Sasha have. If you think about it, yes, he is rich but he wasn’t always rich and that is not what keeps Mrs. Obama. However he IS hardworking and above board. That can help one towards wealth in the right way.

        January 31, 2012 at 10:00 pm

We cannot let up. He thinks he has found the key to victory. Go negative, 90% of the time, relentlessly. I’m gonna lose some hair during the general. I hate when they lie about the president. I don’t mind criticism and critique. But they are just making shh up about him.

          January 31, 2012 at 10:07 pm

POTUS has to be agressive in the general! Being nice to the billionaire candidate will not work. Mitt/Karl/Koch Brothers are going to go nasty in the general. They’ll start running ads on POTUS before the Fall. Mitt has never had any plans for this country, they have shown that they have no desire to lay out plans too.

Britt, I said this before when you made the same comment.

Pres. Obama will always, always ALWAYS be respectful. That’s just the type of man that he is. His surrogates may come out swinging, the Obama campaign ads may be devastating. but Pres. Obama will always be respectful, civil, polite, and yes, nice, to his opponents.

To be honest, I hope he completely mocks Robney during the debates. U just know Robney is going to try what he did tonight in the debates to show his base they picked the right guy. PBO can then just smile and say, “Mitt, take a deep breath and calm down.”

                January 31, 2012 at 10:23 pm

Totally agree. He should belittle Robney when he starts to go crazy and produce verbal diarrhea-styled negative attacks against the president.

                • January 31, 2012 at 10:55 pm

mocking and belittling won’t work. Independents don’t like bullies. You can be firm and critical and still come off smelling like a rose, just like PBO did in the SOTU. He went into the repugs’ house and served them their asses on a platter and the independents and dems loved it and said. “more please.” that’s how he’ll win. PBO doesn’t belittle or mock people, those asses do it to themselves.

              January 31, 2012 at 10:26 pm

I so agree isonprize. He will be firm, strong, determined and the ultimate campaigner but he will not lower himself down in the gutter to become what he hates. The contrast for the American people will be stark. It’s maddening for Obama’s opponents the way theyhave to exhaust themselves and become very sure of themselves until the end comes and they self-implode. His calmness drives crazy people absolutely nuts. I have no doubt that PBO will do what is necessary to achieve his goals without losing his soul and inner core.

            • January 31, 2012 at 10:49 pm

            January 31, 2012 at 10:34 pm

It was amazing. Rev Al just skewered him. Called him out for Gingrich’s nonsense “food stamp president.” Called him out for Gingrich claiming blacks don’t have role models. Called him out for Gingrich claiming blacks need to get off food stamps and learn the value of work. The guy tried to say MSNBC was race-baiting, but Rev Al wasn’t having it.

I wish the Republicans were called out this forcefully all of the time. They wouldn’t be as brazen in their bullshit if they had a fear that they’d be so fully challenged in the way Rev Al challenged this guy this evening.

            • January 31, 2012 at 10:42 pm

Absolutely Vero, it was a joy watching Rev Al dismantle Tyler with facts and controlled rage. All Tyler could do was smirk, it’s all he’s got.

No role models? Really? Not even the guy in the White House, never mind the people Rev Al listed, doctors, teachers, etc, etc?

It was just a whole heap of ugly from Tyler, and I was so glad Rev Al was there to take him on. I thought Rachel was great too.

              More of this, please.

It’s fitting that he’d tell black folks who their role models are. After all, we’re mesmerized by government aid and public housing, and the Democratic Party. We cannot think for ourselves in that regard, so of course we need some Tyler guy to tell us who are role models are as well.

                    • January 31, 2012 at 10:55 pm

True. But, of course, Tyler and Newt and the rest of them only have black folks’ best interests at heart, they’re there to help and makes things better. Such Christians.

Nath, thank you for sharing that personal information. It has inspired me to tweet this sometime tomorrow am:

Clue to the interminably clueless Corney and Tavis – #PresObama dad was Kenyan (Africa) & his mom was a Kansan (America). He is totally “African American.”

I am so sick – as a 64 y/o caucasian – of various AA disparaging our President’s unassailable genetics. He is the epitome of African American. Just because his ancestors were not 100 % slaves does not in any way undermine the fact that his wife’s ancestors were and he, born of an American mother, the son of an African father, actually makes him the most remarkable symbol of all that IS GREAT about America.

we have the best role models possible:

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA AND FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMA

    • 174 vero804
      January 31, 2012 at 10:44 pm

Yep…that’s how they view us. No role models, on food stamps, and aborting our babies. This shhh pisses me off so much. I have 2 college educated parents, ALL of my siblings and myself have advanced degrees. NONE of us have had kids out of wedlock or had abortions. Our family was NEVER on public assistance and we were a typical middle-class family. F these a-holes.

There are times when I walk into court and I KNOW there are white folks that are looking at me wondering HOW I got here. WONDERING what I’m doing here. Then I speak and they are SHOCKED I’m speaking clearer and better than THEM. The soft bigotry of low expectations. Gingrich talking the way he has been reaffirms those low expectations. He breathes life into those low expectations. He keeps those low expectations alive so that when someone like me and my siblings and many of my black friends and colleagues go out into the “white world” we have to fight back against this crap and these low expectations. It’s so uncool.

They don’t think Cosby-like families exist but they do!

I was raised by a single mom but we never were on food stamps. She worked HARD for both of us.. always keeping 2 or 3 jobs.

All Black people aren’t sitting around on welfare and food stamps. shit pisses me off. And it undermines people who are actually ON food stamps who are working too! They just can’t make ends meet right now.

Frankly, for every “ghetto queen on food stamps” the Republicans try to trot out, there are 1000s of hard working black, brown, and white folks on food stamps not living it up – just struggling. They do not deserve their assistance cut because Republicans have been able to make hay out of random people undermining the using the system.

SarahT, thank you so much for sharing this letter. One of the greatest misconceptions about slaves is that they were ignorant of their situation just because they didn’t know how to read and write. This is so untrue. This country badly needs to learn the history of the African American experience, which contains a great deal of insights about the resiliency of human spirit. Unlike the vast majority of whites who took slaves, and by extension all black people, for granted, slaves and their descendants took pains to learn the psychology of their oppressors. They knew when to lay low and when to push back. That was the only they could survive the most brutal and dehumanizing experiences of slavery and Jim crow.

I may soon be the only person around who still does not believe that Romney will be the GOP nominee, but it really doesn’t matter. I know that my President’s message will resonate with the people. It is so clear to me that in the end it comes down to who speaks for all Americans, who keeps the dreams of all of us alive, who promises – as Barack Obama does – a fair chance for all, with everyone doing their share and everyone playing by the same rules. The millions of people who do not believe that they – or their children – will ever be part of the 1% will respond to efforts to lift up the 99%. Some of them may listen to Republicans lies and repeat them, but in the end most of them will realize that the GOP does not care about them, but only uses them to pursue the interests of a small minority. Pandering to their prejudices may work for some, but the majority will choose the message of shared responsibility and shared opportunity over the ugly message of hatred and greed. That’s not just my hope – it is a core belief of our President when he talks about perfecting our union. His appeal will always be to the better angels of our nature and to the strong positive and creative spirit of Americans of all races, all creeds and all backgrounds.

I want to agree with you so badly, but politics is a dirty business and political history is littered with candidates who were trampled trying to simply appeal to better angels. Thankfully, I know PBO has the ability to fight it out bare knuckle style if he has to. In the end, it’s not just aobut message, it’s about math and vote totals. We have lots of gurus crunching numbers. We have to trust they know how to maximize the turnout while alos trusting PBO to carry his message across the country and dismantling Robney’s lies in teh debates.

I just don’t think we can ever minimize just how much latent damage the Republicans’ 3 year anti-Obama campaign has caused the president. I think people are craving stability and calm, and I believe too many can easily be swayed to someone they think may bring that.

      • January 31, 2012 at 11:40 pm

I am well aware of good people having been “trampled”. Much of the political “dialogue” today is nothing but sound and fury and angry reactions just poisen the atmosphere even more. It becomes a true race to the bottom when political candiates try to be even more outrageous than their opponents. I am not suggesting that the President ignore the lies of the Republican candidates, but I do believe that his grace and calm and his unerring civility and charity towards his opponents carry much more weight than all the garbage they can throw at him. Rarely have I ever witnessed a more persuasive voice than that of our President and I have no doubt that he will prevail. On the other hand that does not mean that I intend to sit back and watch the show. I will work harder than I ever have in my almost 69 years to get as many people to the polls as possible. I will write letters, overcome my lack of expertise and tweet, call and canvass every day until November 6. I consider it a duty and an honor to be part of the President’s re-election campaign. But I do cherish him because of who he is and how he does appeal to the better angels of our nature.

I don’t think it is certified yet that Romney will be the nominee either. I believe it is going to be a long slog to their convention. It is clear that to me that Romney has had an unexpectedly inspirational and influential impact on Republican voters — he has inspired and influenced Republican voters to stay home by the droves.

This is supposed to be a landslide and a cakewalk and mandate and a restoration and a….

It is not happening. To this day, three years later, the majority of people know that we are still digging out the pit Bush/Cheney dug for this country. To this day, despite all noxious, toxic rhetoric coming form Romney, Gingrich and Santorum the people do not blame the President for the duration of this economic mess. The people push his favorables up and push the tea-party flavored Republican House down.

Gov. Walker and Nicky Haley and Rick Scott are down as well. The people have not been persuaded by Gingrich or Romney as they continually to come up short when matched head to head with the President — and this is before the greatest campaigner in American history has begun to actually campaign.

I know the President will be re-elected. Only two things worry me. The extent to which Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney will tear apart this country in their foolish quest to win and unwinnable election. And the Senate. That’s it. The President and his movement are ready, willing, able and unstoppable.

That’s ok Lisa, rant on! When I saw the posts about Rev. Al, I turned to MSNBC and saw Steele. I could only stomach him for a couple of minutes making all those excuses! I know he has a job to do, but at some point in everyone’s life they have to stand up and have some dignity. Steele is old enough to know and probably experience a lot of this crap that the Republicans have been spewing all of these years about African Americans and he should have a backbone and say enough is enough!

    • January 31, 2012 at 10:59 pm

My husband and I were just discussing Michael Steele. You know what. I bet if you confronted him he would say, “how much money you got – I’m getting mine”. See he knows that the Repubs needs someone black they can stand up and put out front. If you’re black and get a toe in the door of the Repub establishment they will USE you and you will make some money. Michael cares about making money. We ran him out of Maryland. He’s pathetic, but he’s making money – now as a contributor on MSNBC.

I must say the drubbing that Rev Al gave the the Newt Gingrich superpac guy (i think his name was Rick Tyler) was immensely satisfying. Rel Al doesn’t take any guff from anybody. I just love that about him. He is a breath of fresh air because he speaks the truth. I didn’t mind Lawrence O’Donnell getting in a few last licks either. Mr Tyler did not say anything intelligible. He was full of flimsy talking points and he wasn’t making a lot of sense.

Just Wow!! Blacks have no role models..and parents are criminal and on food stamps.. are you serious??

God helps us GOP is itching to start a race war…

That’s just a slap in the face to all of us, not matter our skin color, it implies that President Obama Presidency is not really an achievement or he shouldn’t be seen as a role model to our children..This just pains me..that America would vote for someone that can’t connect with humanity.

We all know the tremendous contribution African Americans made not only to this country..but all over the world. It’s amazing that this so called wanna be leaders of the free world can can be so disingenuous..Truly sad:-(

My best friend has a PhD in chemistry. She works at NIH in cancer research and has worked there for most of her career. She’s a black woman who graduated from PUBLIC High School in 1967. Many of my friends are professionals and came out of the public school system. I’m sure everyone on this site can say the same thing. Newt can kiss my ass. African Americans have the largest middle class since emancipation – even with people like Newt who try to keep institutional racism alive and well.

Yay. That race was supposed to be a harbinger of the November elections. Now that she’s won I am certain they’ll say doesn’t mean anything, it was expected. That’s cool. We just keep winning and trending the right direction while the Republicans continue to have an enthusiasm chasm — Florida 300,000 down from 2008. That’s shameful. THE REPUBLICAN PARTY DESERVES THEIR TWO FRONT RUNNERS

    1) Newt Gingrich

    – Is the angriest man in America.
    – He is the poster child for negative campaigning. He wrote the book.
    – He produced the GOPAC memo that describes the dirty names to call Democratic opponents.
    – He is a serial adulterer.
    – He is a disgraced former Speaker of the House
    – He is an influence peddler.
    – He was a “historian” for Fannie and Freddie
    – He throws racist comments around like confetti.

    2) Mitt Romney

    – He was a vulture capitalist
    – He’s wealthy
    – He’s a flip flopper.
    – He’s a pathological liar.
    – He’s a phony.
    – He has no core.
    – He can’t get arrested
    – He has a habit of copying President Obama.
    – He looks very uncomfortable holding a baby.
    – Romneycare has become an albatross.
