Donna, the last pair, we used to call “Roaches” for ‘they can kill a roach in a corner’ boots. Don’t even ask where that came from.

Then there’s a “pointy boots” style that some of the Mexican teenagers wear that has an exaggerated point. I mean REALLY exaggerated…

Is anyone looking for a ‘good’, highly recommended lawyer? Willard(1994) thought his lawyer ‘could take out your liver, if he needed to save your life, and you’d never even know it.’

    http://bostonglobe.com/business/2012/01/30/boston-lawyer-brad-malt-crossfire-over-mitt-romney-investments/wVoXOdKaECGVTXXZg5d2YJ/story.html

    R. Bradford Malt is best known in legal circles as the chairman of Boston’s largest law firm, Ropes & Gray LLP.
    …..

Malt, a lanky 57-year-old with a penchant for pulling office pranks, has been at Romney’s side at pivotal moments in his career for the past two decades – whether it was saving Romney’s old consulting firm from bankruptcy, helping him stay on the state election ballot in 2002, or defending his investments in his current run for president. Malt has made investment decisions for Romney since 2003, when Romney became governor and put his money into a blind trust to avoid conflicts of interest.
It’s a job that requires Malt to look out for Romney’s political as well as financial well-being.
In 2007, as Romney prepared his first run for president, Malt sold stock in dozens of potentially controversial companies, including casino operators, tobacco growers, and firms with ties to Iran. Last year, after Romney pushed for tougher trade sanctions against China, Malt dumped a number of Chinese holdings. He recently shed a money market mutual fund that had invested in government-backed mortgage companies, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which are blamed for exacerbating the housing bust.
In early 2010, as Romney advanced toward a second presidential campaign, Malt decided to close the $3 million UBS account he set up in Switzerland seven years earlier, realizing it could become a political issue ……
    …….

In 1994, Romney told the trade publication The American Lawyer that “Brad could take out your liver, if he needed to save your life, and you’d never even know it.’’

      Birds of a feather.

      • January 30, 2012 at 5:28 pm

What I find interesting is that the article basically reinforces the fact that Willard has no ‘core values’ – other than his desire to keep his money safe while he makes more. Indeed, they make no attempt to pretend to be what they are not , after all whatever they are doing is ‘legal’ *snark*

‘It’s a job that requires Malt to look out for Romney’s political as well as financial well-being.’
‘helping him stay on the state election ballot in 2002, or defending his investments in his current run for president’
‘In 2007, as Romney prepared his first run for president, Malt sold stock in dozens of potentially controversial companies, including casino operators, tobacco growers, and firms with ties to Iran’
‘Last year, after Romney pushed for tougher trade sanctions against China, Malt dumped a number of Chinese holdings.’

On and on and on… Willard’s ‘ethical’ actions seem all to be taken because ‘he’s running for president, for pete’s sake’ and HE DOESN’T EVEN HAVE ENOUGH MORAL FIBRE to recognize that the character he’s revealing is not of presidential stature. Willard’s wealthy, yet empty!

Off to perform my chauffeuring duties – wish the kid would learn to drive, or that they’d add a later train to our area. 😦 Later.

Last week, President Obama outlined a blueprint for an American economy that is built to last, based on American-made energy resources and clean energy technologies.  He called for “an all-out, all-of-the-above strategy that develops every available source of American energy,” highlighting the innovations that have helped lead to advances in energy sources like natural gas, and reaffirming the Administration’s commitment to “the promise of clean energy.”

A wide range of Department of Energy leaders will fan out across the country this week to highlight that message.

On Monday, January 30, Secretary of Energy Steven Chu will join Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, the Trust for the National Mall, and senior officials from the private sector for a Lighting Ceremony on the National Mall that will feature newly installed LED lights on the Mall from 3rd – 15th Streets.  The LED technology will reduce lighting energy use by 65 percent and provide a well-lit, more secure atmosphere for the National Mall’s 25 million annual visitors.

    Obama’s Lean-Mean-Seal-Machine

Early last week, dozens of U.S. national-security officials received a set of classified PowerPoint slides. In October, Somali outlaws had taken two humanitarian-relief workers hostage, including an American woman, and now U.S. commandos were preparing to launch a rescue mission. Officials in Washington were scheduled to review the operation by secure video conference on Tuesday morning. But then word came that the secret meeting was being pushed up to late in the day on Monday. Why the urgency? There were growing concerns about the rapidly deteriorating health of Jessica Buchanan, the American aid worker.

Be Skeptical: George Soros Didn’t REALLY Say Obama/Romney Same

I’ve been writing a lot lately about the importance of checking facts and making sure those you’re being fed are actually as represented. Here’s a perfect example of what I’m talking about. There was a story about George Soros floating around the left and right blogospheres yesterday, that revolves around an interview Mr. Soros gave to Reuters, in which he was asked about the coming election.

The headline on most news stories and blog posts was a variation on “Soros: Not Much Difference Between Him and Romney,” with honest bloggers and publications adding an ellipsis, and the “less honest” adding a period, or implying that was the entire quote. Many of the right wing bloggers put Romney’s name first because, well, they hate Romney. Here’s a Google search on the above headline:

Thanks Chips for sharing PCTC article that puts George Soros remarks in context. Personally, I would have liked to see a much stronger statement from Soros in support of President Obama. Nevertheless, to assert that Soros said that there was no difference between President Obama and Mitt Romney is totally dishonest! I agree with you that as members of the TOD family it’s imperative that we check all the facts before we inadvertently end up pushing false memes promoted by the lazy media, right wing Republicans, and the self-serving so called progressives all of whom passionately hate President Obama.

Donald Trump exploring options for 3rd Party bid – AGAIN.

// Donald Trump’s top political adviser told ABC News he’s speaking to “high-level political operatives” to explore a third-party bid for the real estate mogul, in a sign that Trump may not quite be done with the 2012 presidential race just yet.
“I can confirm that over the past two weeks I have spoken with many high-level political operatives, campaign managers, finance directors — some of whom I have spoken to in the past. Most are new people from all over the country,” said Michael Cohen, executive vice president at the Trump Organization and special counsel to the reality TV star.
“Until the time Mr. Trump decides to either endorse a candidate or run himself, I am exploring on his behalf the possibilities of ensuring Mr. Trump appears on the ballot in all states, and to develop a team of professionals who could ensure a potential victory,” Cohen added. //

Russell Pearce, the Arizona state Senate president recalled by voters after writing the state’s controversial immigration law, has made a political comeback in the upper levels of the state’s Republican Party.

Over the weekend, Pearce was elected as the first vice chairman of the Arizona Republican Party, becoming the organization’s No. 2 official. Pearce was elected to the post with 60 percent of the vote of those at the party meeting, the Arizona Daily Star reported.

HEADLINE: Obama best understands people, poll finds

// Most Americans say President Barack Obama understands the problems of average Americans better than either Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich do, according to a new poll Monday. More than half of voters, or 55 percent, say Obama connects with the needs of average Americans very or fairly well, a Pew Research Center/Washington Post poll found. Still, 41 percent told pollsters the president doesn’t understand people’s problems too well or not at all well. The two Republican candidates, however, fare much worse: only 39 percent say Romney understands the problems of average Americans very or fairly well, and just 36 percent say the same for Gingrich. //

“American consumers caught a break in their paychecks in December – and the money went right into their saving accounts.

That could help ease the recent squeeze on household finances. But it’s not at all clear whether the trend will continue.
Personal income rose by 0.5 percent in December, after edging up just 0.1 percent in November, according to the Commerce Department….

“We need worker compensation to pick up if consumption is to rise,” said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors, “and that may finally be happening.”

A Teachable Racial Moment: On Fingers Pointed in Black Faces
    January 27, 2012

Usually, my blog posts deal with African American community or political issues, and I talk as one cultural insider to another cultural insider.

However, I’ve realized that sometimes, well-meaning, really nice White people (of which there are many, by the way) want Black folks to talk to them in non-angry, non-confrontational, and patient ways about Black cultural issues they don’t understand.

So I wondered if it might be useful for me to write blog posts that break racial things down for good White folks who mean no harm—and who either have Black friends or are in the midst of acquiring friendships with Black people– and are just trying to navigate these racial waters that ironically (and to me, bewilderingly) have become far more treacherous since the election of our first Black president.

So all these polls have Romney with 15-20% leads over Gingrich in FL. Anyone else getting a de ja vu of New Hampshre in these numbers???

Wasn’t candidate Obama in the leads in the polls going into NH primary in ’08? Then what happened…Hilary C actually won NH. Now I don’t think that Newt’s gonna win FL, but I would not be at all surprised if Newt closes the gap on Romney tomorrow. Especially since the Palins are now in his corner (Todd reportedly gonna be making robo-calls, Sarah all but endorsing Gingrich on FoxNews the past few days) and with the numbers out that say that Mittens has spent 15 million so far to Newt’s 3 millions in negative advertisements (negative ads do work, but they also tend to bring down the numbers of the opponent using negative ads) and what you have is a pretty perfect storm for which Newt can comeback from.

THE GOP PLAINTIVE PLEA: “I WISH I COULD SPEAK LIKE NEWT”

    ==========================================================

We are witnessing the Newt Gingrich ‘GOPAC MEMO’ in action (aka politics as a blood sport). It is really puzzling to me that more people are not referencing this memo that is the blueprint for his scorched earth approach to campaigning and trashing his opponents. Just check out the words that he recommended that Republicans use to describe Democrats. Newt literally wrote to book on negative politics. When he complains about the negative ads being run by Mitt Romney, I wish someone would tell him to look in the mirror. And by the way, cry me a river Newt.

‘Language: A Key Mechanism of Control’ (February 1995)

    ================================

Since winning control of Congress, Rep. Newt Gingrich (R.-Ga.) has constantly complained about “destructive” and “negative” coverage from the “liberal elite media.”
    .
    .
But the clearest expression of Gingrich’s philosophy of media came in a GOPAC memo entitled “Language: A Key Mechanism of Control.” Distributed to GOP candidates across the country, the memo’s list of words for Democrats and words for Republicans was endorsed by Gingrich in a cover letter: “The words in that paper are tested language from a recent series of focus groups where we actually tested ideas and language.” Next time you hear Gingrich complain about media focusing on the negative, refer back to these lists.

As you know, one of the key points in the GOPAC tapes is that “language matters.” In the video “We Are a Majority,” Langauage is listed as akey mechanism of control used by a majority party, along with Agenda, Rules, Attitude and Learning. As the tapes have been used in training sessions across the country and mailed to candidates, we have heard a plaintive plea: “I wish I could speak like Newt.”

That takes years of practice. But we believe that you could have a significant impact on your campaign and the way you communicate if we help a little. That is why we have created this list of words and phrases.

This list is prepared so that you might have a directory of words to use in writing literature and mail, in preparing speeches, and in producing electronic media. The words and phrases are powerful. Read them. Memorize as many as possible. And remember that, like any tool, these words will not help if they are not used….
