Jonathan Cohn (TNR): President Obama visits the Detroit area on Friday, and his timing couldn’t be better: Today’s Detroit Free Press brings more good news from the auto industry:

General Motors, Ford and Chrysler all plan to add jobs in Michigan, which stands to benefit more than any other state. Nissan, BMW, Honda, Toyota, Kia and Mercedes-Benz also are hiring. Suppliers are looking to add engineers and technical people, but at a more gradual pace.

About 15,000 auto-related Michigan jobs could be created this year….

The Nation: It is hard to read Remedy and Reaction, Paul Starr’s remarkable chronicle of the hundred-year effort to legislate universal health insurance in the United States, without recalling Robert Gibbs’s tortured quip that Democrats who’ve denounced the Obama White House for having knuckled under to Republican principles or intimidation “ought to be drug-tested.” Nobody with a sense of history – that is, nobody who reads Starr’s book – could doubt how sensible and brave was the president’s effort to drive the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 through Congress. Nobody with a feel for the present moment should doubt how imminent is the threat to the act, how urgent it is for progressive Democrats to rally around Obama – and without all the condescending qualifications that “independents,” who flock away from allegedly weak or incompetent leaders, interpret as contempt.

Greg Sargent: …. At an event in Las Vegas (yesterday), Obama offered his most extensive rebuttal by far to the bogus GOP charge that the push for higher taxes on the wealthy is about “class warfare” and “envy”. The whole thing is worth a watch – the tone was not one of outrage, but one laced with a good deal of mockery and derision:

****

Washington Post: The Obama administration finalized a rule Thursday governing the management of 193 million acres of national forests and grasslands, establishing a new blueprint to guide everything from logging to recreation and renewable energy development.

The guidelines – which will take effect in early March and apply to all 155 national forests, 20 grasslands and one prairie – represent the first meaningful overhaul of forest rules in 30 years….

Several environmentalists and scientists praised the guidelines … “The vision is laudable, and this is no small shift in how the national forests will be managed, from one of commodity extraction into a vision of protection, restoration and water preservation,” said Dominick DellaSala, president and chief scientist for the Oregon-based Geos Institute.

Don’t get me started amk. I spent the entire day yesterday posting items about the feckless media and the Republican Party pathological lying. It is infuriating that the pundits are so averse to pointing out the facts. They just look the other way when Willard lies and just makes stuff up. If the media thinks they are helping him by not calling out the lies, just wait – his arse is going to nip a nail eventually. It will with be by a version of the “Katie Couric” interview where a “real” reporter challenges his crap. Or he will walk into the buzz saw that is President Barack Obama during the debates. I can’t wait.

      • January 27, 2012 at 10:05 am

        Good Morning TOD

I have come to the conclusion that the so-called journalists and pundits are stenographers. Where are the investigative journalists? Do any of them really fact check anything. Ever so often on of them may say something is not true. But as Debbie Wasserman-Schultzs tweeted last night (paraphrasing) the lies Romney told last night rose to new heights. Did anyone hear the media call him out on any of the lies he told? NO! They want Mitt to be the nominee because they believe he’s the only one who can beat President Obama. They will be proven wrong, AGAIN.

Well, Bain isn’t strictly a Venture Capital firm, which invest in new ideas and helps to launch new, mostly risky, businesses. Bain is a private equity firm. Their purpose is to make money for their investors; to return huge returns via restructuring companies. They increase the projected worth of the company by reducing costs (including massive staff reductions) so they can leverage them (i.e. take out loans) at the projected value. They then pay out those loans as returns for their investors, and they also charge massive management fees to the privilege of this “restructuring”. The don’t make anything. If the company is fortunate enough to survive this onslaught, and some do, then Bain sells out, and often sells a lot of the assets of the company, too – making even more money for their investors.

A venture capital firm sees a good idea, and invests in the hopes of huge returns for taking the risk on a new thing. Sometimes they win, sometimes they lose. But their main goal is for the idea to succeed, so they make money. Remember, Romney was so reluctant to invest in Staples, and initially turned it down – because it was risky given that it was more venture capital aligned than private equity aligned. There were other investors, and finally Romney was convinced to join them. He sat on the Board, but wasn’t involved in the actual management of the firm, and most of the growth happened after Romney left.

Good morning TOD community. It is a beatiful day in the NW suburbs of Chicago, the home district of the smart, charismatic, and soon to be one term Congressman, Joe Walsh (and yes, those trwo descriptors were meant as snark). Bright clear sky and should get into the 40’s. Can’t ask for a better day this time of year.

There are so many things to respect and honor about our President and First Lady: their intelligence, their rapport with people, their (and yes I will say it) patriotism, their ability to have a vision and willingness to search for th most practical way to achieve that vision.

Yet, without a doubt, the single thing that most impresses me is their grace under fire. Specially PBO (although Michelle also has this ability) who almost nver uses anger as a means of repsonding to the most vile, racist and stupid criticisms. His ability to undercut the opposition without ever resorting to name calling. And his ability to be willing to settle for less than the perfect, because that is the only way to achieve something, without whining about the unfairness of it all.

And I truly believe that it is this grace and humility (real not false humility) that causes people, even those who may disagree with his views, to respond to him the way they do. And that is why I am confident about the election (although I will never be complacent). And I also strongly believe that, because of his ability to show the public what the current Republican Party is really all about without turning people off by using name calling, that he will bring a bunch of new Representatives and probably some new Senators into the fold. We won’t have 60+ in the Senate, but the public demand for real governance will result in some of the Republicans being more willing to at least allow actual votes on legislation.

One final point. I was listening to Ed Schultz’s radio show the day after the SOTU speech. Now, Ed has been a blowheart and has been overly critical of the President, but he has changed his tune a lot recently. He was effusive in his praise for the SOTU speech and was dismayed at the lack of response from the Dems on some of the things the President said. He actually said, “The Dems need this President’s back more.” I think Ed has finally realized that by having the President’s back, the Dems help themselves. And I think this fall, we will see more Dem candidates speaking up loudly for a lot of what the President is promoting.

I’m going to be a bit radical here and say that we often speak about messaging on this blog and my critique isn’t so much directed at the WH as it is the Democratic Party as a whole.

Someone needs to corral the Party and tell them that in an election year there will be no criticizing the President on cable or in interviews. Full.Stop!

We are a big tent party that is open to all opinion but IMO we need to show some discipline and fall in line during election years. Save the criticizing for after we win. Too much is at stake and the Dems should know by now that all the media is doing is waiting for someone to say something negative so they can pounce.

The President’s coattails will win some of these Congressional Districts this Fall so they need to have his back starting right now. I feel if they wait until the Fall to have his back it just might be too late for them.

      JMO.

      • January 27, 2012 at 9:32 am

Donna, I would hardly call that radical (at least to us here, although it might be to some otherso-called progressives). I will go a step further and say that not only does the criticism of the President need to stop, but there has to be more vocal support of the President. And when there is criticism, it should be directed where it rightfully belongs: at the Republicans. For example, a Dem could say, “I wish that we had been able to get X (public option, more stimuluis funding, etc.) and I know that the President also wanted that but those Republicans are the ones that stopped it. Gosh, one would almost think the wanted the economy to be bad.”

          January 27, 2012 at 9:39 am

I heartily agree with this, in fact, when Ed asked DWS about this when she was on his show, she said they’d come out strong, and I also think Chuck Schumer was asked the same thing, but I think it should be starting now, while he’s getting some positive press. They need to demand equal time on those talk shows as they still are watched by 3 million or so, still a lot of people. I agree that they should stop criticizing PBO and start having his back.

      • January 27, 2012 at 9:38 am

It’s not radical. It’s just fucking common sense. Pahdon my FF.

        • January 27, 2012 at 10:24 am

You’re right, but it’s not the way we do things in the Democratic Party. What’s so ironic is that Dem politicans preach all about Americans helping each other out, but then turn on each other, while the GOP’s philosophy is all about “You’re on your own,” but they (normally) stick together like complete co-dependents.

This year might be different, though, because the GOP is doing the self-sabotage things, so hopefully the Dems will embrace this turnaout by actually supporting the guy guy who is going all out to support them.

by having the President’s back, the Dems help themselves.

Full stop. During the weeks before the elections in 2010, the GOP is 100% on message, with Reps repeating the same talking points from coast to coast, like a mantra. While I certainly would not want to replicate such brainlessness and dishonesty, Dems finding and all repeating a set of core messages is what this electorate needs to sidestep the confusion which the GOP specializes in spreading.

      Excellent comment, japa.

    Silver Lining Alert:

Re: Obama vs. the Wicked Witch of the Southwest

“The run-in, captured in a photograph of the governor wagging a finger at the president as they discussed her book, “Scorpions for Breakfast,” lit up Hispanic radio stations and blogs all over the state. While it is difficult to judge whether the moment will have any lasting impact, Hispanic leaders said that what is being dubbed by some as the “dustup in the desert” could play in the president’s favor given the unfavorable view many Hispanics have of the governor for her advocacy of tough immigration measures.

For that incident alone,” Robert Meza, a Democratic state senator from Phoenix, said Thursday, “85 percent more Latin people will gravitate toward the president.”

SECRETARY GEITHNER ON THE KEY TO U.S. GROWTH (Europe, Gulf Oil, Republican Party)

In an interview with Fareed Zakaria, Secretary Geithner said the biggest driver of how fast the unemployment rate comes down is how fast we GROW. And that depends on these two fundamental factors:

    1) What happens in the world, meaning in Europe and the Gulf (Oil).

    2) To be blunt: Whether the Republican Party in congress will decide to legislate things that are good in the short term.

Davos 2012: Timothy Geithner on key to US growth

The US Treasury Secretary, Timothy Geithner has stressed the importance of new legislation and fiscal reform to stimulate growth in the American economy.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, he said global events and domestic investment would determine the rate at which unemployment would fall.

The great state of Maryland I friggin hate you! ( no…not really) Governor Martin O’Malley is the BEST thing since sliced bread. When PBO wins a second term, I sincerely hope he begins grooming him to take the reins of the Democratic party. He is one of the BEST spokespersons for PBO and the Democratic party. He was on Morning Joe and he shut Joe down. It was the sweetest 5-6 minutes of my political junkie life. Joe Scarborough didn’t raise his voice or attempt his usual rudeness. Gov. O’Malley was joined by Delaware Gov. Jack and Illinois Gov. Patrick Quinn. They all talked about the jobs that have flowed in droves to their state because of the actions taken by PBO. They talked about how their states have all increased exports beyond their wildest dreams because of the actions taken by PBO. O’Malley and Quinn talked about how the local auto industry in their respective states have more than tripled. How third and fourth shifts are being added at manufacturing plants, how in 2008, Groupon in Illinois had only 8 people working at their HQ and now they have over 8,000 people because of the tax breaks provided by PBO. They all had PBO’s back but Gov. O’Malley was the main spokesperson. They all looked to him and he had his facts down pat. He was phenomenal! He waxed effusive praise about PBO. He went on and on about GOP obstruction and said when PBO wins in 2012, the GOP will have to learn to come together with the Dems and work with PBO and end their intransigence.

I sincerely hope during the 2012 campaign and in PBO’s second term, they begin to use Gov. O’Malley more and raise his visibility profile. He’s freaking amazing! He speaks softly but he is lethal with his facts and he just nails republicans to the wall with FACTS. I can’t stop waxing poetic about him because he blows me away everytime! Seriously if H. Clinton isn’t running in 2016, then it has got to be O’Malley all the way. He’s bloody great!

She has a lot of the same qualities I mentioned upthread in regard to President Obama. She has intelligence, a vision, practicality. I agree with donnadem about the president’s coattails. I think a fair number of Democrat reps and sens don’t realize yet that the best thing they have going for them is President Obama! They’d better align themselves with him if they want to be elected or re-elected. Also, the so-called liberal media…MSNBC, etc. better get with the program too, or they will see the destruction of everything they hold dear. I’m glad to see Ed coming around. More of them need to. After all, FOX wins by being consistent and supportive of their people. These guys need to get over the “present two sides fairness” drivel. I’m beginning to think, as others have mentioned, that they are happiest when things are going against them, and they can complain…..I mean you MMore, KOlbermann, etc.

The American economy grew at its fastest rate in over a year and half. The Department of Commerce announced Friday that the U.S. gross domestic product grew 2.8 percent between October and December despite continuing turmoil in the global markets. The three-month period was the fastest pace of growth since the second quarter of 2010.

The conservatives and Robney are making the argument that he put GM into bankruptcy.
But what they don’t tell you is, they would not have been able to come out of bankruptcy without the bailout and the restructuring.

A WEASEL FINALLY CORNERED BY ANIMAL CONTROL

    Newt Loses It

    =======================

By virtually everyone’s account, he just plain blew it.

Earlier in the day, shortly after his old rival Bob Dole went completely medieval on him, Gingrich had delivered a podium-pounding speech in Florida that accused Romney of conspiring with Establishment figures to take him out as a threat to their power. He must have burned himself out, because that fiery Newt Gingrich was not apparent during the debate. He sounded bad, he looked bad, and generally came across like a weasel who had finally been cornered by Animal Control.

For very, very long minutes, Romney beat him up on the immigration issue, managing simultaenously to appeal to nativists and to suck up to Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who had already done him the enormous favor of criticizing Gingrich’s ads accusing Mitt of being “anti-immigrant.”

Growth in the US economy quickens in fourth quarter

The pace of US economic growth increased in the three months to December, according to new figures.

The economy grew at an annualised rate of 2.8%, the Commerce Department said.

This was up from the 1.8% annual rate recorded in the previous quarter, although it was slightly lower than the 3% rate predicted by analysts.

The growth rate was the fastest in 18 months, helped by more businesses stockpiling goods, but pointed to a slower rate in the current quarter.

IS THAT FAIR? DOES THAT MAKE SENSE TO YOU?? Those are the critical questions of the day.

  45. 142 Ladyhawke
    January 27, 2012 at 10:32 am

COMMON SENSE WINS THE DAY EVERY TIME.

Common sense is defined by Merriam-Webster as, “sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts.”[1] Thus, “common sense” (in this view) equates to the knowledge and experience which most people already have, or which the person using the term believes that they do or should have. The Cambridge Dictionary defines it as, “the basic level of practical knowledge and judgment that we all need to help us live in a reasonable and safe way”.

Sometimes I look at PBO and just marvel. I think, what must it be like to be Barack Obama? President of the United States living in that glorious White House surrounded by first-rate people who serve your every wish and command. World leader beloved by so many all over this planet. Married to an outstanding woman and father to two beautiful and bright girls who will no doubt go on and make their own mark on the world. Access to the best of everything life has to offer. Acquainted with some of the most interesting and important people of our time and one who puts ordinary people first. A leader in every sense of the word. And what we all know in our hearts is that he is a very good man who deserves every bit of this and more.

“Luck”, my ass. The new disgusting theme from the creaky old sages of times gone by, like Tweety, Fineman and Rendell.

No one of his color and his name has a “luck” advantage in this country, where the states south of the Mason-Dixon line still believe in the Confederacy. It is his pure genius of mind and authenticity of heart that has brought him to where he is, working against the most disrespectful, dangerous obstruction we have ever seen leveled against an American President.

The frames and vision of today’s speech were especially potent and compelling.

Agree with peeps on msnbc. There is no one better than President Obama on the campaign trail. No one. Period. Watch the faces. They are with him all the way. He brings them along to his final crescendo where he stirs the souls. He is superb at this.

This is what scared the sneaky underhanded lying Republicans who pushed all those voter ID bills, seeing the way the young people like this President they are so afraid the young would turn out again like in 2008, so they are just trying to suppress voters of all kind, it had nothing to do with voter fraud.

Government spending contracted a whopping 7.3 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011 — lead by big cutbacks in defense spending. Had it not been for these cutbacks, the data suggest, growth in the last quarter would have been 3.7 percent.
