“I don’t think people would think I was being honest with them if I said I was Mexican-American,” said Romney. “I’d love to be able to convince people of that in a Florida primary!” Cue: Romneylaughter

The new standards were required by the 2010 school nutrition bill that increased funding for school meals. The new regulations, according to the Department of Agriculture, will:

As President Obama highlighted in his State of the Union speech last night, developing natural gas here at home is part of the solution to getting off foreign oil and putting Americans to work. As part of that commitment, the Arkansas Energy Office (AEO) recently launched a Compressed Natural Gas Conversion Rebate Program, which provides incentives for fleets and individuals to purchase and/or convert their Arkansas-licensed vehicles to compressed natural gas (CNG).

Thanks to $2.2 million in Recovery Act funding from the Department’s State Energy Program, rebates are available on a first-come, first-served basis until January 31, 2012. The amounts of the rebates depend on either the cost of conversion — or the cost of a new CNG vehicle — but cannot exceed $25,000.

Senate Democrats are preparing an aggressive legislative agenda to complement the vision President Obama outlined in his State of the Union Address. The goal is to test the idea that the public supports an agenda of aggressive federal action on behalf of the middle class, and that Republicans are locked in a pattern of reactionary opposition, even to popular policies.

The push is premised on the notion that the country has turned the corner on the fights over deficits and the size of government, and that keeping issues of equity and opportunity for the middle class at the center of the national debate will redound to Democrats’ political benefit, either by breaking the GOP or by putting them on the wrong side of public opinion.

But in an extremely consequential election year, when consensus becomes an endangered species on Capitol Hill, it will take a groundswell of political pressure to force either party to work with the other on a substantive agenda. So expect the Dems to hawk these issues relentlessly.

Put your friggin’ finger down, you disgusting, hateful woman.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer points at President Barack Obama after he arrived at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012, in Mesa, Ariz. Brewer greeted Obama and what she got was a book critique. Of her book. The two leaders engaged in an intense conversation at the base of Air Force One’s steps. Both could be seen smiling, but speaking at the same time. Asked moments later what the conversation was about, Brewer, a Republican, said: “He was a little disturbed about my book.” Brewer recently published a book, “Scorpions for Breakfast,” something of a memoir that describes her years growing up and defends her signing of Arizona’s controversial law cracking down on illegal immigrants, which Obama opposes. Brewer also handed Obama an envelope with a handwritten invitation for Obama to return to Arizona to meet her for lunch and to join her for a visit to the border. (AP Photo/Haraz N. Ghanbari)

When she heard the President was coming to town, why didn’t she ask them to arrange the lunch and tour of the border. Ok. I need to vent. First, on behalf of all the SANE CITIZENS of Arizona, I would like to formally apologize for the unprofessional, disrespectful, ignorant,RW nutjob of a governor. She is an embarrassment to the people of Arizona, and should write a formal apology to the President for her unprofessional, and self centered actions today.

I would bet anyone, dollars to donuts, that Brewer’s new BFF, Sarah Palin told her that in order to sell more copies of her shitty sophomoric book, she’ll need to do something that will take the eyes and attention OFF the President (who came here touting jobs for HER state…because SHE HASN’T DONE ANYTHING ABOUT JOBS OTHER THAN CUT THEM) So Jan has to make this about HER! So she decided that she would stick her finger in the chest of the President of the United States.”You Got That BOY!!” That’s what she implied. I detest her, and will call her office and give her a piece of my mind.

Contrast that crass, moron…with the grace and class of Gabby Giffords in the House today, handing her resignation to Boehner. A woman who put her constituents and her state above all else, and acted at all times with honor, grace, professionalism, and respect for her job, her coworkers, her constituents, her state, and her country.

Jan Brewer could stand to study Gabby Giffords, and try and emulate her.I wish Gabby a strong and swift recovery. I hope that she can return to Congress to do the people’s work again.I will call Grijalva’s office or even Debbie Wasserman Shultz’s office, and see if they would be agreeable to placing a plaque outside the entrance of the House, in honor of Gabby….that they may start a new tradition before they enter the House. They should ALL touch that plague, in remembrance of Gabby….and approach their interactions with one another in the spirit that she embodies. To put partisanship aside and do what is best for the country. For Gabby.

      • January 26, 2012 at 11:21 am

df, I love your idea about the plaque for Gabby Giffords. Keep us posted on your communication with Grijalva and Debbie. Also, if you need any assistance in advancing this lovely idea, please don’t hesitate to ask. Thanks>>

This is the way Jan shows respect??

“He was a little disturbed about my book, Scorpions for Breakfast,” Brewer said. “I said to him that I have all the respect in the world for the office of the president. The book is what the book is. I asked him if he read the book. He said he read the excerpt. So.”

Asked what aspect of the book disturbed him, Brewer said: “That he didn’t feel that I had treated him cordially. I said I was sorry he felt that way but I didn’t get my sentence finished. Anyway, we’re glad he’s here. I’ll regroup.”

On the letter, she said it was personal letter asking him to sit down with her to discuss the “Arizona comeback.”

Who does this witch ugly woman thinks she is greeting. These crazy sleezy GOPers have gone too far. How dare this old ugly woman point her finger in the President of the United States’ face. Where is hell are her manners. She does not give the POTUS a letter for an invite with her in this manner. She knows how to go through the proper channels to invite the leader of the free world to lunch. What the hell is wrong with this heifer?

This heifer probably knows that Mark Kelly and Gabby personally asked POB(when he was there at the hospital) if he would come back and personally visit the borders that covered Gabby’s district area with Gabby personally. Mark had asked Gabby’s Chief of Staff what would Gabby ask of POB, if she were able to ask him when he visited her. And the Chief of staff said that would be the most important thing Gabby would want.

Mark asked POB to do that, and POB looked him in the eyes and said, “Yes, just let me know when Gabby is ready, and I will come.”
Mark did that in private with POB. (It is written by Mark in their new book)

Why did this heifer hand POB this classless invitation then talk about it. I do not trust this nasty heifer. And for her to do this on the day that Gabby was in Washington handing in her letter of resignation and having her bill pass, just all of that emotions for us today, and this heifer did this.

I am pissed off so much right now. She is a double heifer. She is a crap of a person. She is crossing the line with the wrong person. I can’t stand people who disrespect our POB. Just do not like that crap. He is not some “boy” to these ugly hateful white bully people. WTS are they thinking. Forgive me, But I am so upset now. I need a glass of wine now. Brewer is a total goatfigging mutant slime sucker that has sold our state to anyone who will give her a peso. She is really not too smart and only got her current job because of $$$, influence and PBO taking our real Governor away to be head of Homeland Security. (Painful though that is I have forgiven them both for this)

So, the President is standing in front of a construction site. This means people are working. And it represents progress and the future.

Contrast that with Romney, who stood in a factory that was shut down during G W Bush’s administration back in 2008, to show the devastating effects of Bush’s recession. Focused on the negative, ignored the progress that’s been made, and the fact that things are looking up.

I know which vision inspires me. Half the battle is perception.

In an email obtained by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Adler announced that he is “relinquishing all day-to-day activities effective immediately,” following reports last week about a column he had written earlier this month suggesting that Obama’s assassination might be a potential measure to protect Israel from a nuclear Iran…….

Underpolling minorities and DES will bring diwn Robneys numbers by the primary.
That said, the President gets 95% of the AA vote down here, 13% of the total vote.
The President leads Robney by 10 with Hispanics down here, with ten percent undecided. The Hispanic voters are 22% down here.
So, with just the minorities, he is around 25%. With 60-65% white older voters.
You mean the President only gets 17% more of the remaining vote?
      I dont think so!

Americans are growing more optimistic about the state of the economy and direction of the country, according to a new NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll out Wednesday evening, and President Obama is receiving better grades on his handling of the economy and job as a result.

More people said they believe the economy will get better (37 percent) in the next year rather than worse (17 percent). That’s the highest level in more than a year and a seven-point jump over last month. It also represents a reversal from October, when 32 percent of Americans said they expected the economy to get worse, versus 21 percent who expected improvement.

This is my day for receiving attacks against the President via my PC. This one has a segment from Dianne Sawyer about CA, Alaska, and NY hiring Chinese firms to build some mighty big bridges. The email blames President Obama and says not to reelect him. However, in the tape it said CA decided not to take Fed. money to build a bridge to Oakland, because then they could hire the Chinese firm. A guy named Anzlano from the CA Transportation Dept. said they couldn’t find American welders. This is just the kind of work the President suggested that Community Colleges take on–training people for jobs–what the hell does all this mean?

Maybe so but how many want to relocate to CA. To tell the truth welding is a high level skill and those guys have an apprenticeship they have to go through. In the not too distant past, welders were not considered uuhh cool or glam. More effort has been put on getting on a reality show than pursuing skilled labor.

You know what? The Presidents view on education is spot on. But i’ll go him one better.
Let’s turn back the clock a bit to a point where there were certain course taught at the high schools that are virtually gone. They were: Industrial Arts, Home Economics, Civics, English Literature, Music, Physical Education, and in some places Social Studies and a foreign language.
No matter how smart one is with bauds, bytes, bits and blogs sooner or later an individual has to interact face-to-face with another. I can see two people standing next to each other, ipads in hand, texting each other. How sad.
Unfortunately we’re close to that now.
To hell with that though. We gotta make sure the republiCONS keep the public dumbed-down and happy with their fear, hate, and guns.

              breathe, yardarm, breathe!

you’re right, of course, about education. it’s not just job skill training. right now, the president’s focus is jobs, as it must be. but i think he also knows that jobs are a necessary but insufficient part of a successful life.

yes, we need work and income and service and satisfaction. but we also need art and music and athletics and history and literature and languages. for a full and joyful life, we need rich after-work lives, as well as good jobs.

right now, folks don’t even have jobs. let’s get them the training they need to get back to work. and meanwhile, we won’t forget what we’re really about: this is the greatest country in the world because the people here have the greatest opportunities to lead fulfilling lives.

so hold on to that vision for education–i just know the president is holding it, too.

Watch Mitt Spin: Romney Claims His Real Tax Rate Is ‘Closer To 45 Or 50 Percent’

By Judd Legum on Jan 25, 2012 at 4:05 pm

During an interview with Univision, Romney was pressed on whether it was fair for him to pay about 13 percent of his income in taxes — as he did in 2010, according to his recently released tax returns — when many middle class families pay far more. Romney proceeded to claim that his actual rate is “closer to 45 or 50 percent.”

To justify his figure, Romney relied on his belief that “corporations are people.” When Univision’s Jorge Ramos asked Romney if his 13 percent tax rate is “fair,” Romney suggested adding the maximum corporate tax rate (35 percent) to his personal taxes to calculate his real rate:

Tax Lawyer: Romney paid no capital gains tax in 2009

      TPM:

“In 2010, Romney carried over $4.9 million in capital losses from 2009. But as tax lawyer Ed Kleinbard told reporters during a Tuesday conference call organized by the DNC, ‘that means he paid no tax on any of his capital gains in 2009, including tax on his carried interest in 2009’ That’s not necessarily because Romney actually lost money in 2009 either. ”

Almost all of Willard’s income is from capital gains. And he paid no taxes on those capital gains in 2009 (again not necessarily because he lost money then). Due to the amount he likely made, his tax rate would be truly minute ( for example, he may have actually made $10 million in capital gains, paid no tax on that, and paid tax only on his speaking income which could have been only a couple hundred thousand dollars).

A person who made ten million dollar and has an estimated worth of $250 million paying a near zero percent tax rate only 3 years ago. Couple this with all of his toxic comments and we can see how this complements the picture we already have of him. This is very damaging.

But, it’s just making the rounds now and giving the right wing more to go after this administration about–you are right Dr. Democrat–it was CA decision. I’m going to look into this a little more. January 25, 2012 at 10:04 pm

      Hi Auni,
I did a quick Google search and the Diane Sawyer story ran on Sept. 23, 2011. In the comments section around of one of the sites I found her story on back in Sept 2011, people were up in arms about it and one, less rabid commenter tried to explain that the project in SF was to repair damage to a section of the Bay Bridge as the result of the 1989 Earthquake and that repair project started over 10 years ago and apparently it’s been fraught with a lot of problems ever since, including an FBI investigation into welders on the project back in 2005. I was actually on the Bay Bridge when this earthquake hit and it was very scary. But I digress. II’ve copied his post and the wikipedia link that lays it all out in excruciating detail below. So Sawyer’s story itself was a tad misleading in and of itself (no surprise there) and the red meat email you received today with this story was also misleading and designed to confuse voters and throw a wrench in PBO’s re-election. That being said, I did just send a email to US Senators Barbra Boxer and Dianne Feinstein and Gov. Brown about it. Hope this helps.Sorry to go so long… 🙂

“Your question is valid, but there are many things you are not considering. Sure, it looks bad the way ABC put it, but consider the WHOLE story and it’s not so clear cut.

First, the Chinese are world leaders in bridge building, both in terms of engineering and in fabrication. They also have the facilities for fabrication of components that do not exist in the US. Third, the project began back in the 90’s and the contract was let go years ago, long before the 2008 recession (it was originally slated for completion in 2007). Finally, the Oakland project is an innovative design which became an international project with input from 5 foreign countries … not just China.

Read the history of the project at the link and see if you still feel the same way. It’s easy to look back from today and say it was a bad decision, but consider it from the perspective of 2002.

I’m not familiar with the other two projects mentioned in the video, but suspect the arguments are similar. The reality is that there are very few companies in the world qualified to take on these types of projects, and many are not US companies.

If President Barack Obama is showing some swagger, it shouldn’t be a surprise.

His job approval ratings point to an uptick. The Navy SEAL unit that killed Osama bin Laden just pulled off a daring rescue that Obama authorized in Somalia. He’s fresh off a big speech before Congress, and the Republicans who want his job are criticizing each other probably more than they are Obama.

As he hits the road for three days of travel to important political states, Obama is on a roll.

This is a really interesting dynamic going on. The GOP rails against Obama waging class warfare, when Obama is the one with the bigger billionaire on stage.

Should Romney win the nom, I guarantee there will be this line in the debates from Obama: “Class warfare comes up a lot by Governor Romney, but when Warren Buffet looks at his 15% tax rate he thinks he should be paying more. When Gov. Romney looks at his 15% tax rate, he thinks he’s paying too much. That speaks to Gov. Romney attitudes about class, not mine.”

Gingrich Pledges To Establish Permanent Base On The Moon ‘By The End Of My Second Term’ |

In a speech pandering to Florida’s aerospace community ahead of the state’s primary, GOP contender Newt Gingrich made a bold pledge to establish a permanent U.S. base on the moon “by the end of my second term.” He further promised that if he becomes president, America will get a man to Mars “in a remarkably short time.”

A budget-conscious President Obama ended the program for a lunar colony and moon trip after NASA reported it didn’t have the money for any part of the plan, “and even if it were to get a budget infusion, the schedule was unworkable.” Gingrich rebutted the charge that he is “grandiose” by comparing himself to Abraham Lincoln, the Wright Brothers and John F. Kennedy. ThinkProgress has previously reported on Gingrich’s curious space fetish, which has included an idea for a “mirror system in space could provide the light equivalent of many full moons” for nighttime driving.

Did he say how he would pay for this ?

Hey guys. Yesterday day I mentioned knowing someone at the SOTU address. It was my oldest brother. He is not the most political person, and even skews conservative in some ways. However, I worked on him hard and he voted for the president and will do so again. He thinks the Republicans are really too radical.

Anywhooooo – he had a great time. He was seated in the upper level, where the first lady sits, but directly across from her box. He said the Chamber is quite small for so many people. He said there is so much protocol and pomp it was pretty interesting to watch it all unfold. He said they had to be there quite early given the 9pm start for the speech. He said it’s kind of obvious the whole thing is scripted, in terms of where people sit, how they react and where the president walks upon taking the podium. Gabby, he said, handled herself well throughout and was given prime real estate for her seat. He said you could cut the tension with a knife when POTUS brought up the issues with Congress. He said all non-Congress people cheered loud about passing a ban on insider trading.

Lastly, he said there were no improper outbursts or anything like that. He was honored to be there, apparently there’s only 200 or so extra tickets to give out, and so that means not even every member of Congress can invite one person. There’s some kind of rotation that happens with tickets for certain people. He ended by telling me he wouldn’t forget being present for such an historic moment in US history.

House Republicans Fear They Really Are a Do-Nothing Congress

House Speaker John Boehner has dismissed President Obama’s campaign against a do-nothing Congress by saying “most Americans think we’ve got too many laws already,” but Boehner’s underlings don’t think so. House Republicans “worry they’re going to go home to campaign with a light legislative résumé,” Politico’s Jake Sherman reports. That’s funny, because their strategy since the 2010 elections has been to do as little as possible so Obama can’t pad his résumé either. “And with Congress’s approval ratings in the gutter, Republicans are sick of blaming the Senate for their inaction,” Sherman writes. “They want real legislative victories, not just GOP bills that pass out of the House and go nowhere on the other side of the dome.”

The facility uses 59 natural gas delivery trucks, and Thursday morning, President Obama will get a firsthand look at them.
Liquid natural gas cools at a chilling 260 degrees below zero. It burns cleaner, produces fewer emissions and will be the hot topic when Obama visits.

Gingrich Pulls Ad After Rubio Dubs It ‘Inflammatory’

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich’s campaign on Wednesday pulled an ad that accused rival Mitt Romney of being “anti-immigrant” after influential Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida complained that the ad was inaccurate and inflammatory.

Rubio scolded Gingrich over a Spanish-language radio ad that says Romney is “anti-immigrant.”

Ed just took care of Jan Brewer on his show! In no uncertain terms he said this is no way to act with the President of the United States, and as an elected official she should know better. E.J. Dionne said the President differed with her view of something that happened when she visited in the Oval Office, and she was mad. E. J. was glad he stood up to her, and so am I. She is rude, and has no business treating the president that way! She was the one who marched out there and challenged him, without even greeting him. Can the people of Arizona get rid of her!!!!
With regard to that chain email…..I imagine, from my experience, that the parts quoted have been pulled totally out of context, and the entire document has not been quoted. This is a trick of the RWers. We used to get those, but I began to look up the facts on Factcheck.org and send it back to the senders, and we don’t get these any more. They know how we feel. My husband said, well I just delete them, and I said, these people need to know the lies they’re buying into. They cut and paste and make these things say something to support their warped viewpoint.

Had a small SOTU party last night -great energy…and food. Totally amazed that PBO called out congress for their insider trading. Had us LOLing. Reminded us of Ryan in the front row of the HCR debate & the speech at the republican retreat. The man has guts. I’m glad he’s on our side and visa versa.

I can’t remember ever being excited about a SOTU address before ‘this president’ (as Robme would say 😆 ) let alone throw a party for it.

As for the republicans: Jealous! They keep searching for someone like him but they’re just not cut that way and they’ll never find him unless and until they regain their humanity.

What’s that curse about living in interesting times?

ChipsChica you have done a phenomenal job keeping up. I am always so far behind it takes me the whole evening to catch up, which is why I rarely post. A big shout out to you.

SOTU: What he said. What he meant.

Obama’s Message to GOP Rivals: I’m No Sitting Duck

    —————excerpt———————

WHAT HE SAID: For the first time in nine years, there are no Americans fighting in Iraq. For the first time in two decades, Osama bin Laden is not a threat to this country. Most of al-Qaida’s top lieutenants have been defeated. The Taliban’s momentum has been broken, and some troops in Afghanistan have begun to come home.

WHAT HE MEANT: I’m commander in chief, and I’ve done a damn good job at it, despite what those presidential pretenders in the other party are saying. And I’m talking about this in the first eight sentences of my speech, so even people who are rushing to change the channel will remember that I took down bin Laden and got us out of Iraq.

WHAT HE SAID: These achievements are a testament to the courage, selflessness, and teamwork of America’s armed forces…. They’re not consumed with personal ambition. They don’t obsess over their differences. They focus on the mission at hand. They work together. Imagine what we could accomplish if we followed their example.

WHAT HE MEANT: Grow up already, Congress!

Can’t get over what that mangey cow Brewer did today. Wish Miche had been there. I’m fantasizing about what she would have done. I imagine that in her own classy way, she would walk over to The Bitch and smile oh so politely while saying: “Fucker, get your crusty-ass hand outta my husband’s face before you lose it.”

President Obama, who Pentagon officials said personally approved the rescue plan and raid, had called several high-level meetings on the case, the Pentagon said, since the two aid workers were kidnapped by gunmen whom Somali elders said were part of a well-established pirate gang. “As commander in chief, I could not be prouder of the troops who carried out this mission,” Mr. Obama said in a statement on Wednesday. “The United States will not tolerate the abduction of our people.”

    President Obama’s Winning Style

President Obama gives the Republican candidates a run for their money in terms of style. His fashion choices are radically chic yet subtle — the perfect balance of elegance and confidence. The dark navy suit fits him to perfection with a sharp shoulder and a tapered and elongated silhouette. The proportion of the lapel matches the tie width to a mathematical degree and is accentuated by just a hint of a shirt cuff. The saturated light burgundy tie with geometric print projects strength and a cool factor. The generous four-in-hand knot alludes to a sophisticated, worldly politician. Nicolas Sarkozy’s got nothing on him. Obama makes the right choice by not wearing a pocket square, instead choosing to embellish the lapel with an Amerian flag pin. The hint of gray hair only adds to his movie star looks and athletic physique. Simply put: He dresses like the most powerful man in the world.

Hello, my name is Lisa and I am an addict. I’ve been high on Obama circa 2008. One of the main reasons I’ve yet to beat my addiction (aside from the fact that I don’t wanna quit) is my enabler, my dealer, Chipsticks. Now I can’t go more than a few minutes without getting a hit. I wake up thinking about my next hit, I go to bed dreaming about my next hit. I can’t function without my enabler/dealer nor can I function without getting a few hits per day. I just want to direct a few words to my enabler: thanks, Chips. 😦

That’s okay Pinkbunny. She shows her ignorance, and there are a lot of disgruntled white-wingers (and nut job people of color) after such a stellar performance by our illustrious and smart President last night. It’s to be expected, and I abhor negative labels to any class of people but she would be considered trailer-trash under other circumstances.

Just saw the Arizona crowd and they looked like circa 2008. As far as Jan Brewer, she’s an idiot. She’s trying to get face time and play to her base. Instead she embarassed herself and her state.

Have to admit I enjoyed the analysis of PBO’s style. I didn’t know why he always looked so good, but he does, and I liked the explanation. He looks elegant and classy and at ease. ALL the others look lumpy and dumpy….even Mitt, who I know, pays thousands for his suits. However, he always looks stiff and starchy…PBO looks relaxed and elegant. What a difference. I read somewhere that his new tailor put him into double vented (dare I say it, “European” styled jackets) as opposed to the single vent suit. It is more graceful and moves with him, better than a single vent. The tailor has an easy job, however, as his build is perfect. Now that I think about it…..pocket squares do look stodgy!
I remember an article about British tailors in which it was said…English tailors have to be good, because English bodies are so bad! This is not the case with PBO’s tailor. He never looks like the clothes are wearing him, but he always looks just right, wherever he is. Mitt tries too hard, and Newt just doesn’t try, and Santorum…….well…….Paul always looks like he slept in his clothes.
Think about it….which party has the best dressed men….obvious, the Democrats. VP Biden is also elegant, Steny Hoyer always looks perfect…there are others, but I can’t think of one Republican man whom I would say is well dressed.

You’re so right. I also noticed how well Senator Bob Casey looks in his suits. But none of them swoon me like PBO 😀

I am going to watch the full enhanced version video of the SOTU address. I had so many technical problems last night, that I just gave up. PBO was obviously phenomenal and poised as usual. Does anyone remember him acknowledging FLOTUS? I recall him doing that at the beginning of every other SOTU address. It always made my heart flutter to see how PBO looks at her and how FLOTUS demurred and blushed. Did PBO mention her at the end?

This clearly does not take away from his speech? I was just wondering. If anyone can help me out with that that would be great. Many thanks TOD fam.

Dreamchaser, the enhanced version of SOTU is powerful.–all the graphs and diagrams really add to his remarks. I had problems on that tab while PBO was actually delivering the SOTU, But I watched the enhanced version very late last night after all the web traffic on WH.gov seemed to have settled down. No tech problems that time around.
