seven million thanks!

Hate asking ….. but ….. if you’d like to, eh, celebrate by donating $7 to TOD’s Obama Biden 2012 fundraiser at OFA (link) that would be very lovely 😉

If I show up at OFA as Barb from Florida or a guy from Alabama, I’m, well, neither …. their gremlins give me a new name most weeks 😕

Thanks for all your support everyone, you’re gems!

Chat away (sorry for the lack of news updates today, will get back to normal tomorrow)

Jodi haz a sad….Her book is no longer top 100 on Amazon…and it came out a little over 12 days ago. Meanwhile, back in a place called Reality, President Obama’s 10 seconds of singing has been over a millions times (Go Chips)…and Michelle is closing in on half a million followers in less than a week. Waz dat dey say about karma?

    It hurts…..

No one is talking about Kantor’s book right now. Not a single person.

      • January 20, 2012 at 6:38 pm

Jodi thought she wrote a searing expose of the Obama White House — and it went the way of all such “searing” exposes of the Obama White House. There’s just no scandal to flog coming out of this Administration. If what you’re interested in is reading about the inner workings of a government that’s efficient and capable, then this White House will stand as the model of a fully-functioning Administration for several decades. If what you’re interested in is salacious, soap opera gossip, then look to GWB or Clinton.

Gingrich Says ‘Work’ Is A Strange Concept To Juan Williams

The dog whistles are not too subtle with these Republicans.

      • January 20, 2012 at 10:08 pm

Newton is wallowing in a filthy pigsty of racism and the stench is overwhelming. I hope every one of his disgusting comments come back to haunt him in ways he never imagined. Callista and the people behind him smile as he sells his nasty soul.

    • January 20, 2012 at 6:27 pm

Marital fidelity is a strange concept to Noot!

    • January 20, 2012 at 6:28 pm

      I say this to Leroy:

      ALL. Double, double toil and trouble;
      Fire burn, and caldron bubble.
2 WITCH. Fillet of a fenny snake,
      In the caldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
      Adder’s fork, and blind-worm’s sting,
      Lizard’s leg, and owlet’s wing,—
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.
      ALL. Double, double toil and trouble;
      Fire burn, and caldron bubble.

        January 20, 2012 at 6:34 pm

Ya, I bet Juan regrets his stupid Muslim garb remark that got him canned from NPR. In fairness, I do have to sympathize with Juan, even he doesn’t deserve this crap, even if he is a snake.

        • 32 jacquelineoboomer
          January 20, 2012 at 6:40 pm

That’s true, and I hope he realizes it.

        • January 20, 2012 at 6:41 pm

I find it very hard to sympathize with him. He’s not a stupid man. When he was primarily an NPR pundit, I thought his analysis was quite good. He knew what Fox was, unless he was completely blind. Fox just pays a lot more than NPR, and he followed the money. Dr. Faustus is a great character, but his choices led him to his fate, as have Juan Williams’.

            January 20, 2012 at 6:45 pm

IMO it’s inexcusible to use these dog whitles against anyone, regardless of their ideology or party. Even if he is a snake, he is still a human being. I’d just as quickly condemn the same dog whistles if they were directed Herman Cain’s way, and you know how I despise Cain as a politician. Reverend Sharpton made a similar point not too long ago, how this dog whistle issue is a sensitive issue for many.

              January 20, 2012 at 6:51 pm

I agree, and Juan Williams could make this a teachable moment, by speaking out about it. Of course, maybe he is doing that – I just never watch FOX!

              • January 20, 2012 at 7:08 pm

I would like to think he’s doing some soul-searching. This is definitely the first time he’s been subjected fully to the searing hatred of the GOP and its enablers at Fox “News”. Like I said, he’s not a stupid man, and he did some very good work before his gig at Fox. I should be more charitable towards him, because he doesn’t deserve the racist scorn that’s being heaped on him, no matter how much of a stooge he’s been for the past few years. I do hope this brings him to a realization of just how much damage he’s been doing to himself and the greater community by his giving a patina of respectability to a party and its propaganda arm that want to do nothing more than marginalize those who don’t look like them and don’t hold the same opinions.

      January 20, 2012 at 6:41 pm

Now, I’m no big fan of Juan Williams and his most recent opinions, but you can’t take away the work that he’s done. He was the author of the book and primary force behind the documetary “Eyes on the Prize: America’s Civil Rights Years, 1954-1965”

To say that work is a “strange concept” to him is just hateful. Newt is just a nasty, old, racist relic. Hate is just an ugly mean thing. He personifies HATE.

    • 41 virginia
      January 20, 2012 at 7:30 pm

Everytime Newt puts someone else down about not “working” or “working hard enough”, I wish somebody would ask him exactly what HIS job is right now. Last year, just as the campaign was getting under way, he went on a 14 day cruise to the Greek Isles. How is that for a “work ethic”. In fact, what has Newt been doing for the past 15 or 16 years since he was kicked out of Congress? If it’s just those speeches he talks about all the time and the “NOT lobbying” he’s been doing, then it’s good “work” if you can get it, but I’ll bet he hasn’t broke a sweat in a long time.

Yet he wants to put other people’s children to work cleaning toilets.

As I continue to point out, the contrast between our President and the Final Four running for President could not be more clear. We have Willard, the rich man who believes his wealth entitles him to the Presidency. We have Newt, who thinks infedelity is something to be treasured and wants to make young kids work as janitors. We have Santorum with his Google problem, his blah/plives problem, and Ron Paul living in a fantasy land. Contrast that with our caring President and his singing ability and it’s no contest: PBO by a landslide!

I’m not linking to politico twice in one day, but there is an interesting bit there about how palsy/walsy Gingrich is with all the reporters covering their campaign, attending reporters’ bday parties, hangs out with them in hotel restaurants, jokes and talks sports with them, will engage in any kind of small talk. Sounds like the McCain rapport with reporters. And the article points out the contrast with Romney, who won’t engage with reporters at all. I now know why I noticed an anti-Romney turn in reporting in recent weeks. It seems like it might be easy to gain reporters’ affections and positive coverage—–meet them in the hotel bar, have a joke ready, assign nicknames to reporters a la W, make them feel like they’re part of the in crowd, talk about last night’s games.

Then after the debate was over Newt and Clarissta chatted with him as if it never even happened.

Newt ‘s pout-rage is phoney….just like he is.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) — Warren Buffett’s utility company MidAmerican Energy is continuing its big alternative energy push by buying an 81-megawatt wind energy project from Invenergy Wind.
After buying into two big solar projects being built by First Solar(FSLR) in December, Berkshire Hathaway’s(BRK.B) MidAmerican Energy is increasing its wind energy portfolio — an area in which it is already a U.S. leader — taking advantage of multi-decade power purchase agreements (PPAs) from regulated utilities.
Buffett’s investment in Bishop Hill II and previous deals for solar plants comes at a time when the alternative energy industry faces significant headwinds, including falling power prices, lower government subsidies and a European slowdown. Wind energy investment fell 17% in the U.S. to $21.6 billion in the fourth quarter, while wind generation fell for the first time in a decade in 2011, according to Bloomberg data. Previously, the industry had seen greater than double-digit annual growth.

On the eve of the South Carolina primary, action star and Internet phenomenon Chuck Norris endorsed Newt Gingrich for the presidential nomination.

Norris expressed his support for Gingrich in a Friday column on conservative website World Net Daily.

“We believe Newt’s experience, leadership, knowledge, wisdom, faith and even humility to learn from his failures (personal and public) can return America to her glory days,” Norris wrote. “And he is the best man left on the battlefield who is able to outwit, outplay and outlast Obama and his campaign machine.”

    giggle.

  31. January 20, 2012 at 7:18 pm

Tweety asked …Howard Fineman and Eugene Robinson…what was the secret to Gingrich’s turn around…..they all skirted the issue….Gingrich has surged in the polls because he stroked the racist fervor of the mob/crowd……

    • January 20, 2012 at 7:22 pm

And if by any chance he’s the nominee, it will doom him in the general election.

I’m not exactly sure what’s Eugene’s purpose on these segments besides giggling and appearing like a fool, taking twice as long to just repeat everything that has already been said while adding nothing new to the discussion.

And as for Coward Fineman – he can’t cite his famous “sources” on the hill now, can he? Gingrich’s ugly racism alone will do him in if he’s ever the nominee. So let them cover for him all they want.

Rev. Al highlighted the Tuskegee Airmen and “Red Tails” on his show, which was great.

Being biased toward the Navy, may I also remind us of the group of men who became the first African-American commissioned and warrant officers in the United States Navy during WWII, in the 1940s. They are known as The Golden Thirteen. The first group went through training (there were 16 in the original group, but not all were commissioned) and the class average at graduation was 3.89. I recall reading that the instructors could not believe the high scores, and I think they had them tested a second time (I read that years ago and now can’t find a link; I believe the instructors later apologized).

Here are some details of these men – and their female counterparts – who proudly served our country:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Thirteen

The first female African-American WAVES officers were commissioned in 1944:

    • January 20, 2012 at 7:49 pm

jo. Those guys went thru boot camp at Camp Robert Smalls(Great Lakes) which was set aside for us. The camp wasn’t integrated until the ’50. I went through in the late ’50’s. It should be noted that the Golden were not assigned to any capital ships that I know of.

      January 20, 2012 at 8:18 pm

My Uncle, a Navy Chief, was stationed @ Norfolk when the first African American officers were assigned there. After I joined the Corps, anytime I was visiting, he recalled to me how the Marines on the gate refused to salute the African American Officers. One day, one of the officers got fed up with the lack of respect; he told the Marine that he didn’t care what he thought of him, however, he would respect the uniform. He proceeded to hang his cover on the gate post and ordered the Marine to stand out there saluting the cover until he was told him to stop. From that moment on, the Marines saluted the African American officers when they encountered them.

I was never certain if this was true or if it was a “sea story,” — you know how the Saliors enjoy ribbing Marines (right Yardarm?)

Fast forward to 1992, my NNOA Chapter was host of our annual conference, the surviving Golden 13 were honored guests. I was their escort and seated with them at lunch one day. I repeated my Uncle’s tale — not only was it TRUE, I was seated next to the officer.

      January 20, 2012 at 10:35 pm

Thanks for sharing the story of “The Golden Thirteen.” They, like the Tuskegee Airmen, deserve recognition. Since you are “biased toward the navy,” you probably should be clamoring for a much deserved recognition of Dorrie Miller, a “mess boy” who played such a heroic role at Pearl Harbor! I also think Blacks who played heroic roles in the Army deserve recognition. I am thinking of the all Black regiment, the 369th during WWI, which was nicknamed the “Hell Fighters!”

Having said that, I am so delighted about this movie. I am usually not an avid movie person, but I am certainly going to see “Red Tails.” A major incentive for me is that a very good friend of mine who passed away (really my mentor in history) was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen. He taught me so much about the role, and travails, of Black soldiers in the history of American wars.

        January 20, 2012 at 10:47 pm

Oh, by the way, back in the 1980’s, PBS aired an excellent documentary on Black soldiers, entitled “A Different Drummer.” I wish PBS could re-air it because many members of the Tuskegee Airmen (including, Gen. Benjamin O. Davis, Jr), and I believe some members of the Navy’s “Golden Thirteen,” were interviewed.

Existing home sales rose for the third consecutive month in December, according to data released Friday by the National Association of Realtors, which touts the upswing as a sign of recovery in the national housing market.

Sales of existing homes rose to a seasonally adjusted rate of 4.42 million during the final month of the year, marking a 5 percent increase over the downwardly revised 4.39 million homes sold in November and a 4 percent increase over the 4.25 million homes sold in October. The number of homes sold in December 2011 also marked a 3.6 percent increase over the 4.45 million homes sold during the same month one year ago.The December upswing closed out an altogether positive year for existing home sales, which rose 1.7 percent in 2011 to 4.26 million.

Andrew Adler, ‘Atlanta Jewish Times’ Publisher, Apologizes For Obama Assassination Comments

Andrew Adler, the owner of local publication the Atlanta Jewish Times, has apologized after suggesting that assassinating President Barack Obama is an option that should be considered by the Israeli government.

As reported by Gawker, Adler’s article, written earlier this month, describes the urgency in protecting the Israeli people from threats such as Hamas and Hezbollah and argues that there are essentially only three options available: attack Hamas, beat back Hezbollah, or assassinate Obama.

From Adler’s column, which is not available online, but which Gawker uploaded to the web:

Yes, you read “three” correctly. Order a hit on a president in order to preserve Israel’s existence. Think about it. If I have thought of this Tom Clancy-type scenario, don’t you think that this almost unfathomable idea has been discussed in Israel’s most inner circles?

Another way of putting “three” in perspective goes something like this: How far would you go to save a nation comprised of seven million lives … Jews, Christians and Arabs alike?

You have got to believe, like I do, that all options are on the table.

In a subsequent interview with Gawker, Adler seemed hesitant to stand by his words, saying he had written them just to “see what kind of reaction I would get from readers.”

Now, however, Adler has issued a full apology.

“I very much regret it, I wish I hadn’t made reference to it at all,” he told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency on Friday.

    Greetings TOD family.

So sorry to be away, but the first week of school is a killer.

I wanted to share a story from last night. I went to a speech by David McCuan, a local Political Science teacher who gathers statistics on elections and made predictions based on a gaziilion facts and figures.

    The summary

PBO wins narrowly, The Republicans take the Senate by 4 seats, Congress stays Republican by 1 seat.

I am not writing this to bring anyone down, but instead to focus our attention on working for Senate and Congressional seats in addition to PBO.

Here are some thoughts Professor McCuan shared with us – feel free to be inspired or think they are baloney.

Many people no longer associate themselves with a party, instead they associate with an issue (gay marriage, environment, etc)

Online campaigning is still being studied, however at this point there is no proof that it makes a statistical difference. Making phone calls, and knocking on doors still works the best.

The Western corridor of Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon is crucial to a win.

The turn out for the Republican primaries in the fist 2 races has been at the 2004 and 2008 level which is low, if that holds the Republicans may not do as well as the projections indicate

The Republicans are a very fractured party and will remain so for 2014 and 2016.

Karl Rowe and Grover Norquist realize they can’t take the Presidency this year so they have set their sites on the Senate and Congress.

One of his last comments struck me “The political landscape has turned on it’s head in the last 48 hours” he quoted several reasons (Iowa results, Romeny tax stuff, and Newts ex wife). I have a feeling over the next 10 months he may be making that statement several more times.

So…….. let’s stay focused on not only 4 more years, but turning back the House and holding the Senate.

    Press On

I doubt it, seeing as Newt isn’t on the ballot in every state, one of them being his homestate Virginia. Willard WILL be the nominee, but he will be bruised and weakened becoming the nominee.

      January 20, 2012 at 8:03 pm

Anything is possible. They let McCain pick that nutjob SP as a VP so yep they would be silly enough to let LeRoy win. All they care about is picking someone they think will be in-your-face nasty toward President Obama. Newton LeRoy fits the bill.

      January 20, 2012 at 8:53 pm

They’re all saying Newt wins S.C. now, and like Goldie just pointed out on Ed—-after Fl. , there’s a series of red states—Ms., Al, etc.—where there will be plenty of Newt supporters, so who knows what will happen.

      January 20, 2012 at 9:38 pm

VERY possible. Romney is badly wounded. And Gingrich is well tailored for the far right base. Santorum won’t be able to compete much longer, and his votes will go to Gingrich and not to the “mormon”. Maybe Gingrich will lose a little bit of the evangelical vote because of his adultery, but not that much.

Gingrich gives the base what they want. He taps into the hate for Barack Obama, but more deeply, into the resentment against minorities, and the fear/frustration of those white conservatives who know the white majority is on the road to become a minority.

I guess Greenwald, Hamsher, Sirota and the rest of the firebagging emoleft are feeling REALLY STUPID for betting against our singing President. January 20, 2012 at 8:26 pm

I’d love to know what is behind the downfall of Keith Olbermann. He was so good during the election in ’08…he was my go-to pundit. He was always a little over-the-top for me, but I appreciated his insight and his humor for the most part. It seems as though health care reform, coupled with his father’s death, really drove him off the deep end. I admit that the process for health care reform was gross and was disappointing and was not fulfilling on some level. Still, I think he could’ve handled it better, rather than demonizing everyone, including the president.

        • January 21, 2012 at 12:53 am

vero – “…the process for health care reform was groo and was disappointing and was not fullfilling on some level.” You said it. I would really like a most mortem on that some time in the next 10 years from POTUS. WTF was all that?? It really seemed like they just let the Tea Party morons take too much control. God that was awful. It was like getting really drunk and waking up next to an ugly person. LOL sorry but it really seemed like worse than an effing bad dream.

    • 203 nintendowii10
      January 20, 2012 at 8:09 pm

Because Willard has a HUGE EGO inflated by his wealth. He believes that just because he has a huge amount of money, he is entitled to and able to buy his way to the Presidency.

  56. January 20, 2012 at 8:09 pm

Reading the post upthread about the endorsement and statement by Chuck Norris, tells me that these folks are not interested in any solutions to this economy and the future. They are only interested in defeating PBO and throwing out racist red meat. It is sickening.

Campaign staffs for US Senator Scott Brown, a Republican, and Elizabeth Warren, his Democratic challenger, left a half-hour-long negotiation session at the Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston this afternoon without an agreement to curb outside advertising in their campaign.

The two sides have been debating proposals all week that would involve signing voluntary agreements to impose penalties on the campaigns if outside groups put up advertisements on their behalf.

Brown’s campaign sent its latest proposal about an hour before the meeting. Warren’s staff wanted more time to review it.
