PPP National Poll Shows Obama Beating Romney By 5 Points

Public Policy Polling’s first national survey shows President Obama leading likely nominee Mitt Romney 49%-44% — Obama’s best number since last May after killing Osama bin Laden. As PPP notes, it’s not that Obama’s popularity is surging, but rather that Romney’s is headed south:

It’s not as if Obama’s suddenly become popular. He remains under water with 47% of voters approving of him to 50% who disapprove. But Romney’s even less popular, with only 35% rating him favorably while 53% have a negative opinion of him. Over the last month Romney’s seen his negatives with independents rise from 46% to 54%, suggesting that the things he has to say and do to win the Republican nomination aren’t necessarily helping him for the general. Obama’s turned what was a 45-36 deficit with independents a month ago into a 51-41 advantage.

One thing that really stands out in this poll is the extent to which Obama has claimed the middle. He’s up 68-27 on Romney with moderates. He also leads by 20 points with voters under 45, a group there’s been some concern about slippage with, and he has a 66-30 advantage with Hispanics.

It’s amazing all the progress that’s being made with non-embryonic stem cells. I’m far from a pro-lifer, but embryonic stem cell therapy always seemed a bit creepy to me. If you can get the same results with other types of stem cells then cell therapy will take off like a jet.

      That image tells it all!

This reminds me of a one-liner somebody on CNN said last night. Something about the situation in that state was because of “trouble with unions.” It was too late for me to send hate mail to CNN, and I didn’t catch the entire gist of what they were talking about. But we all know the only “union trouble” Scott Walker has is because he tried to kill the unions!

I’ll be watching for this messaging in the future, and will push back vigorously on it.

All those Wisconsin activists who walked petitions during the long cold weeks of November, December and January are heroes. If I could, I’d give every one of them a medal for standing tall for their state and for democracy, To every Wisconsonite who signed the petition–congratulations for adding your name to this historic event. Those of us who are suffering under Republican led governors and legislatures are envious of your recall process and in awe of your determination and energy. Bravo, Bravo, Wisconsin!!!

Mitt Romney says he pays just 15% in taxes, but won’t release returns from before 2011
    by Jed Lewison

So Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s big stumble today was saying that $362,000 is “not very much” money, but it came as he was delivering another piece of news: that while he would probably release his 2011 taxes when he files them in April, he won’t release any tax returns from previous years.

    – In other words: Romney plans to release only his 2011 return and will do it after the key primaries are over.

It’s bad enough that he’s waiting until after the GOP primary … but to only release one year’s worth of returns? If he’s going to release 2011’s, why not release them all? President Obama has released his going back to 2000. If Romney won’t do that, the question is why not? What’s he hiding?

It is obvious he manipulated his 2011 returns so they will appear more acceptable to the public than his previous returns.

        • January 17, 2012 at 3:27 pm

There you go! Obvious to you and me both, Bill. 🙂 Since he considers $1500 a band-aid and $360K a small amount, I’m hoping his accountants overlook areas that will still reveal his manipulation.

            January 17, 2012 at 4:25 pm

I’l bet $10,000 he has the best accountants money can buy, and everything will look fine. He may have legally been able to have some of his earnings hidden offshore which probably will not appear on his 2011 taxes. The one thing he cannot hide will be his tax rate on whatever he reports as US income.

I don’t know about you, but I have not even gotten all of my tax information back to file my 2011 tax yet. I received one notice that it will be the middle of Feb before one of my info forms is due to be sent out to me.

Romney could file last years tax info now and this years in April. He also could tell his tax accountant to figure out his taxes according to what looks best instead of what is best for him as ….for Pete’s Sakes he’s running for office.

      • 41 nospin
        January 17, 2012 at 6:26 pm

actually he didn’t say he paid 15%, he said closer to the 15% rating. So my guess is that it is less than 15% (between 10 and 13%).

Is there a way to demand an official document from the IRS. ? I don’t trust this guy and his handlers. I’m sure he’s done some cleaning of his off-shore accounts for 2011 and the returns won’t look that bad except the tax rate. But if he’s forced to release previous returns, I want to be sure they’ll be the real ones.

          January 17, 2012 at 5:33 pm

No. Tax forms are not public documents (and would you really want them to be?) Yes – expect 2011 to be very sanitized. By not releasing past years we still win.

    • January 17, 2012 at 4:08 pm

Rikyrah, I wonder what percentage of the US population has a TOTAL net worth of less than $362,000. I’ll be it’s huge. This would be a staggering sum for millions of Americans and truly beyond their wildest dreams. Honestly, has this man even one empathetic cell in his body? What planet does Mittens live on?

    • January 17, 2012 at 4:49 pm

Well we should push hard for him to release several years of tax records. Look how idiotic they were about the President’s birth certificate which he had already done. The “long-form” was based on pure racism. We have every right to demand to see Romney’s tax records.

BREAKING: Walker Recall Effort Delivers More Than 1 Million Signatures | Activists working to recall Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) filed petitions today with more than 1 million signatures to the state, close to double the almost they needed to begin the recall process and force Walker to stand for reelection in November. If successful, it would be the first gubernatorial recall in Wisconsin history, and only the third in U.S. history. The number of signatures comes close to the 1,128,941 votes Walker received, and was far more than the 540,000 needed.

good morning TOD family. Before I say anything else I’d like to wish our First Lady a blessed;happy;peaceful;sucessful Happy Birthday.May God continue to guide;protect and keep her healthy.

Went to rehab again with mom yesterday and I am happy to report that yesterday was the first time she was able to bend her knee without too much yelling and crying.Well we had some yelling and moaning but it didn’t alarm the whole block like last Friday afternoon 😉
Just about an hour ago;I told her to her surprise that I was not going to get her medication for her at Jewel and that she had to go;on her own. Needless to say I got a few death stares coming my way but she went and came back safely 😀 😆
I’ve called the Obama campaign headquarters downtown Chicago this morning to see how I can be either a volunteer.Whatever I can do;I’ll do but like I told Brian Gorman it will have to wait until mom is fully healed. She might not go back to work until later Feb or early March.

I am utterly exhausted since my brother went to his gf’s house so after this is all said and done;I will need to take a break myself.I am so tired at night I can’t even stay up to watch the Australian Open 🙄 😦

Chips thanks for this site. Thanks to my TOD family for being such supporters of our POTUS and for fighting for him and with him and for our Country

    Until next time
    Fred 😉

Recently, Alaska Governor Sean Parnell hosted the first live terrestrial videoconference between the State Capital of Juneau and Bethel’s Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation (YKHC), which administers a comprehensive health care delivery system for more than 50 rural, primarily Native communities in Southwest Alaska.  The videoconference utilized TERRA-Southwest which now provides terrestrial broadband service for the first time from Anchorage to 65 remote, rural communities in Bristol Bay and the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. Funding support was provided by USDA Rural Development through the Rural Utilities Service and the Recovery Act.
On the face of it, the news may not elicit much sensation, but let’s look at some facts.  The YKHC and those many, inaccessible villages are located in the Yukon–Kuskokwim Delta, one of the largest river deltas in the world, and at 75,000 square miles it’s roughly the size of Oregon.  Can you imagine the immensity of not only planning, but the logistics in actually constructing the system that made today’s videoconference possible?

Notch another victory for Obama and freedom.

(Reuters) – U.S. legislation aimed at curbing online piracy, which had appeared to be on a fast track for approval by Congress, appears likely to be scaled back or jettisoned entirely in the wake of critical comments over the weekend from the White House, people familiar with the matter said.

…With public sentiment on the bill shifting in recent weeks and an implicit veto threat now emerging from the White House, Congressional staffers are resigning themselves to writing replacement language or possibly entirely new bills.

…Three key section of the existing legislation seem likely to remain, a person familiar with the matter says. They comprise provisions aimed at getting search engines to disable links to foreign infringing sites; provisions that cut off advertising services to those sites; and provisions that cut off payment processing.

But critical provisions that would require Internet service providers such as Verizon Communications and Comcast Corp. to cut off infringing sites through a technology known as DNS blocking are now likely to be eliminated.

…But it is not clear if eliminating the DNS-blocking provisions alone will be enough to mollify critics.

    More Obama goodness.

(Reuters) – The Justice Department has stepped up its investigation of Standard & Poor’s mortgage bond ratings during the financial crisis, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.

…Prosecutors are examining whether S&P managers pushed to weaken standards the company had set for rating the mortgage deals, and whether the company followed its established criteria in assigning ratings.

    Story here: http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/01/17/us-sp-doj-probe-idUSTRE80G13M20120117

    • January 17, 2012 at 4:31 pm

It’s about time S&P got nailed. They seem to push a political agenda and use their rating power as a weapon to threaten governments with. We don’t need a financial rating agency with a dubious history of honesty telling governments how to operate so they can get S&P’s approval. This seems way outside their scope of activity and is both destructive and arrogant in the extreme.

      More details on trip:

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama will visit Walt Disney World on Thursday to “unveil a strategy that will significantly help boost tourism and travel,” a White House aide said today.

The president will deliver his remarks inside the Magic Kingdom, with Disney’s iconic Cinderella Castle as backdrop.

It is the first of what are sure to be many election-year visits to Florida for Obama. The president carried the nation’s largest swing state in 2008, but he faces a much heavier lift in 2012 amid a state unemployment rate that remains above the national average.

French judge seeks Guantanamo access over ‘torture’

A French judge has requested access to Guantanamo to probe claims by three Frenchmen that they were tortured at the notorious jail which US President Barack Obama once promised to close. Judge Sophie Clement wants permission from the US authorities to inspect and copy all documents relating to the three men and to interview all persons who had contact with them there, according to legal documents seen by AFP.

The three Frenchmen who made the accusations — Mourad Benchellali, Nizar Sassi and Khaled Ben Mustapha — were arrested in late 2001 on the Afghan-Pakistani border and sent to Guantanamo. They were allowed to return to France in 2004 and 2005 and were detained for periods of between 11 and 17 months.

Obama declared within a few hours of taking office in January 2009 that he would shutter the camp within a year, saying it was used as a recruiting tool for terrorists, and detrimental to US national security. But in the face of deep opposition in Congress to moving inmates to the US mainland or holding civil trials for key Al-Qaeda suspects, Obama has failed to live up to his vow.

Probably so, desraye, along with multitudes of others but I’m more interested in posting news articles that provide accurate information. I could give less than a damn about what people who oppose the President think or post– unless they’re willing to engage in a civil discussion about the issues based on facts. The US media is, for the most part, subsidized by multinational corporations and/or wealthy individuals with an agenda. I think many people are beginning to wake up to that fact but until viable alternatives become available we’ll just have to continue using what we have.

        • January 17, 2012 at 9:38 pm

I am hoping that others who write on this subject will do diligance to the research and record of the President about the closing of Guantanamo. In the article it states that ,”Obama has failed to live up to his vow.” That is not true. The Congress failed,, period. We watched, or I did, the hearings on the Closing of Guantanamo. People forget there are records of all of these hearings and votes to prove how the hear turned out in the end. If only they would do the research when writing on such important subjects.

That is all I am saying. President Obama did not fail in his promise. The Congress failed to allow the President to close Guantanamo.HZ

Romney Pays Only 15% in Income Tax? What a Fair Tax on the Millionaire Could Have Paid For
By Richard (RJ) Eskow | Posted at January 17, 2012, 12:13 pm

At a press conference today, Romney said that the effective rate he’s been paying is “probably closer to the 15 percent rate than anything.” Mitt makes out like a bandit because capital gains are only taxed at 15 percent, whereas ordinary folks’ earnings about $35,000 are taxed at 25 percent (and up to 35 percent above that). He also scored big because nonproductive game-players like Bain Capital take most of their fees as a percentage of the money they invest – which is also taxed at 15 percent!

Then there are all the other tax breaks for millionaires, which is why 1,470 households made more than a million dollars and yet paid nothing – zero, zip, nada- in Federal income tax in 2009. Romney’s worth $250 million. Let’s see: What would Mitt Romney’s proper tax contribution – just Mitt’s, nobody else’s – have provided for the nation that has given him so much?

In my opinion, the article correctly stated “in the face of deep opposition in Congress to moving inmates…he has failed to live up to his vow.” This is FACTUALLY CORRECT and is not an attempt to bash the President.

    • January 17, 2012 at 4:03 pm

This was in response to Linda’s comment which I don’t see now?!!

    • January 17, 2012 at 5:08 pm

Well, it might have sounded more neutral to say he’s been unable to live up to his vow.

‘In my opinion, the article correctly stated “in the face of deep opposition in Congress to moving inmates…he has failed to live up to his vow.”’

In my opinion, I respectfully disagree with you, Creolechild. I think the way that sentence is written was “an attempt to bash the President.” “The president did not fail to live up to his vow.” The President lived up “to his vow” when he issued an executive order to close Guantanamo. The failure is on Congress, and not the President, for blocking his efforts. The President is part of the government which is based on divided powers and checks and balances. The President is not a dictator.

      • January 17, 2012 at 9:51 pm

Thank you nathkatun7. You have stated it so on point. I was trying to say that, but your words are better stated. Thank you very much. I am not picking an argument, I was just trying to read the article, and that is what and how I came away with it.

I appreciate the posting of the articles by Creolechild, But I was Not trying to attack Creolechild. Please forgive me Creolechild ,if my comments come across in that manner. I completely understand each one of our comments.

That is why I love our TOD Family, we all can read, discuss, give our opinion, and also help each other out in understanding BUT at the same time Respect each other in continued love. That is always where I am coming from. Always. There is too much riding on our work as a group of President Obama’s supporters.

I will always Respect my fellow TOD Family member. I love you all too much to do otherwise. Always feel free to correct me at anytime. I enjoy this place too much to disrupt what we have here. I like the Respectful difference of opinion. It makes us think. I love to think.

Still love me, I hope. (((((((((((((I Love You All)))))))))))HZ

Why didn’t this judge request access to the jail in the 7 years before President Obama took office, when the torture was going on? President Obama has stopped that torture, and has been trying to work around his do-nothing, NIMBY Congress to close that prison and relocate the detainees who could be relocated. Arrgghh!

There’s occasionally good stuff at Alternet, but it’s generally poisonously anti PBO, so let’s ease up on the links to there, okay? 😉

Thanks Chips. As per the referenced line……”.in the face of deep opposition in Congress to moving inmates…he has failed to live up to his vow”. We got “deep opposition” so it’s his “failure” to “live up to” his vow. Akin to my beloved promising me a diamond ring, but then he gets fired, so he “failed” to get me that ring. Just wow! (For the sake of transparency, I don’t have a beloved, but you all get my meaning 😀 ) .

      • January 17, 2012 at 4:57 pm

What a completely perfect comparison, edp4bho!

{{{{{{bowing}}}}}}} Why thank you, my dear 😀

I’m not trying to be confrontational and I believe I make every effort to abide by Chips house rules. I’m a little confused about the reference to the author’s phrasing and the subsequent reaction to it though. Yes, it could have been phrased differently but I find it curious that so much energy was expended on four words. And before anyone goes there, I also understand that “failed” is one of the common memes that the media pushes. However, on those occasions it’s NEVER accompanied by additional information that tells the other side of the story, i.e. “deep opposition from Congress”–which is one of the primary reasons that I posted it.

The comparison that edp4bho used was a good one, but it still doesn’t negate the fact that even though it wasn’t the fault of her “beloved” when he lost his job, she still didn’t get the ring. I might also add that the larger point of the article was that France is looking for accountability for actions that took place at Gitmo BEFORE President Obama was elected. A stark contrast to conditions then and now which was lost in the conversation over a sentence that was clumsily phrased.

And, please, don’t get it twisted by making assumptions about my support–or lack thereof– for the President and/or insinuations about defending toxic sites because that’s not what my response is about. Again, Chips, I’ll respect your request and won’t past articles from the Alternet here. Have a good evening everyone. Keep pressing on!~

Pennsylvania Slashes 88,000 Children From Medicaid Rolls | The Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare reveals that 88,071 children were cut from the Medicaid rolls since August as a result of the department Secretary Gary Alexander’s (R) efforts to “reduce waste, fraud, and abuse.” Alexander ordered an increase in eligibility reviews of beneficiaries in July and, now 80 percent complete, the reviews have resulted in the slew of cuts. The numbers don’t count an additional 23,000 children that DPW cut but eventually restored after the families secured legal help. Advocates note, however, that “poorer people may be less likely to call a lawyer, and child advocates believe thousands have no idea they are now uninsured.” DPW is also enforcing a stricter food stamp eligibility requirement that disqualifies any low-income Pennsylvanian with $2,000 or more in assets, as they are “too rich” for aid.

Also some teachers are working for free in PA .

This is what happens when people elect a nasty, heartless Republican governor like Corbett AND give him a Republican legislature to wreak havoc on a state. Pa does not have a recall option, which means three more years of this monster. I plan to tell everyone I meet that a Republican president will be just a Corbett writ large and everything they know and care about will be undermined. Pennsylvanians take it slow and are hard to wake up, but they will wake up in 2012 and the state will go blue.

From the White House: “Today the White House announced that current Deputy Director for Management and Chief Performance Officer Jeffrey Zients will serve as the Acting Director of the Office of Management and Budget.”

“I’m pleased to designate Jeff Zients to lead the Office of Management and Budget. Since day one, Jeff has demonstrated superb judgment and has provided sound advice on a whole host of issues,” said President Obama. “With decades of experience, Jeff has been a tremendous asset to our team and I’m confident in his ability to help us rebuild an economy where hard work and responsibility pay off and the middle class has a chance to get ahead.”

Randi Rhodes read this McClatchy article on Romney and Bain today. it’s a real eyeopener.

Romney’s Bain made millions as S.C. steelmaker went bankrupt

Romney has touted his business acumen as an asset in his bid for the Republican Party nomination for president. But he has come under fire from opponents – including other Republican candidates, such as Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who called Romney a “vulture capitalist” – who say Bain Capital preyed on struggling companies and stripped them financially before selling them off or abandoning them in bankruptcy court.

Bain Capital propped up short-term earnings, Romney opponents say, so the venture capital firm could borrow money that went toward investors’ dividends – enriching Bain Capital but leaving the companies with unsustainable debt.

hey you guys so now I have another question but it is about something that is happy. So as you know it was my birthday last week I come home today and look at the mail – there’s this huge envelope from the The White House and in it is a birthday greetings letter signed by ‘Barack Obama’ and ‘Michelle Obama’. OK. so. I’m trying to not get all geeky and excited here but…… it looks like it’s really signed – cuz there’s ink that came through on the other side from their signatures – and I’m like why do I have a birthday letter? what?!?! I thought you only got that when you turned 100. I’m such a dork but I’m all happy and I keep looking at this and thinking really?? how’d I get this? Does the president send birthday greetings to people when they’re 50?

    • January 17, 2012 at 5:32 pm

We used to live in northern VA. Our best friend(s) there has a good friend who works (or used to) at the WH. She was/is the person that people can contact and make requests for things like the 100th birthday card. But, it isn’t just 100th. She arranged for my mother to get one (GWB!!!!) 😦 when she turned 90. My understanding is that it can be any age. Biggest obstacle is YOUR request getting read, then followed through with. Am betting someone made the request.

Congrats! Bet that is one birthday card you will keep. I know if I got one it would go into my Obama scrapbook. I have so many momentos now I may have to make an encyclopedia like set of scrapbooks. I just keep storing it for my scrapbook. He won’t need a library I’ll have all the reference material needed for the campaign and administrative years. Hee hee. I may have to give two shelves worth of teddy bears away so I will have a place to put the books.

Great photos of our engaging First Couple. Cute facial expression on FL holding up the Obama jersey. And they’re always cute together.
Also—I am sorta addicted to that Obama/Betty White vid—-something about it I love—-have watched many times.
And hope this is true—-news from msnbc that Obama campaign has inquired about an ad buy, may launch soon. All those R candidates slamming and sliming him 24/7 for the last few months with little to no response—-I think it’s time to respond with some truth and some positive Obama messages.
