Andrew Sullivan: How Obama’s Long Game Will Outsmart His Critics ….It’s not that I don’t understand the critiques of Barack Obama …. it’s that I don’t even recognize their description of Obama’s first term in any way. The attacks from both the right and the left on the man and his policies aren’t out of bounds. They’re simply – empirically – wrong.

….. there have been many times when I have disagreed with decisions Obama has made …. but given the enormity of what he inherited, and given what he explicitly promised, it remains simply a fact that Obama has delivered in a way that the unhinged right and purist left have yet to understand or absorb. Their short-term outbursts have missed Obama’s long game – and why his reelection remains, in my view, as essential for this country’s future as his original election in 2008.

…. If I sound biased, that’s because I am. Biased toward the actual record, not the spin; biased toward a president who has conducted himself with grace and calm under incredible pressure, who has had to manage crises not seen since the Second World War and the Depression, and who as yet has not had a single significant scandal to his name …. What I see is a president whose character, record, and promise remain as grotesquely underappreciated now as they were absurdly hyped in 2008. And I feel confident that sooner rather than later, the American people will come to see his first term from the same calm, sane perspective. And decide to finish what they started.

Bob Cesca: Andrew Sullivan wrote a spectacular cover-story for Newsweek about the president’s achievements ….. he underscores something I’ve been trying to outline here for some time now. President Obama’s strategic planning and, specifically, the roll-out of his agenda, is a long term process that requires us to not miss “the screen for the pixels.”

…. Of course Sullivan continues to repeat the myth that the NDAA authorizes indefinite detention of U.S. citizens when, in fact, it simply does not ban it. There’s a difference, and if we want an explicit ban on indefinite detention of citizens, as I do, contact your member of Congress or make a rational case for such a ban to the White House. I assure you, a liberal president will listen to a reasonable argument from liberals (on the other hand, a paleoconservative who’s locked into a fictitious ideology, like Ron Paul, will not). The president has done so before, and he will act. Steve Benen, for example, wrote a measured and rational memorandum to the White House during the healthcare reform debate and some of Benen’s strategic advice was adopted by the administration….

Happy MLK Day Chips and friends. Chips this ad is fantastic. I see the DNC is on the job. This should be played over and over. 🙂

I wonder if this is a topic for discussion.

I was 11 years old when Dr. King was assassinated. As a primary school child in the Netherlands, I couldn’t read, understand or speak English. Yet I remembered in some odd way he compared himself to Moses in his last speech, of which parts were relayed on Dutch television (subtitled).

Do we have a “happy” MLK remembrance day ? I certainly vividly recall discussing the barbarous nature – on the school yard, no less – of the US in this murder of someone who sought change (we in Europe thought was certainly reasonable) through peaceful means.

MLK remembrance to me means to go to his speeches on Youtube (thank God for that – I never imagined before that I could listen to his “I have dream” speech, or all the things he actually said on the 3rd of April, 1968.

Please, I value your opinion on this.

For me…I don’t know that I would call it “Happy”….it is a day of remembrance of a man who’s life’s work was justice for all…brought about in a peaceful, non violent way. Happy to celebrate his life, and all he worked toward for a better and more inclusive world…but THIS day being described as “happy”…I’m not so sure. Great question though! maybe someone else can explain this better than I, or has a different take on it than me…

By the way, nice to see you back here! Been awhile 🙂

Hi TM! Although many of us who are old enough to remember the horrific manner in which he was taken from us, the commemorations in January are about celebrating his birth (January 15th), honoring his work, taking stock in the progress we’ve made toward his vision, and doing what we can to keep moving toward it. It’s the entiretly of his life’s work that is important. So rather than focus on how he died, we’re “happy” that he lived, that he spent his life in service to others, working toward freedom and justice for everyone. That’s my take on it.

        • January 16, 2012 at 4:31 pm

the commemorations in January are about celebrating his birth (January 15th), honoring his work, taking stock in the progress we’ve made toward his vision, and doing what we can to keep moving toward it. It’s the entirely of his life’s work that is important.

Thanks – that certainly explains it to me – unfortunately, we do not have a leader like that in Europe (I was going to mention Anne Frank, who was 5 months younger than Dr. King, but she could not even rise to be a voice against another form of racism, but after her death).

Andrew Sullivan: How Obama’s Long Game Will Outsmart His Critics

    http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2012/01/15/andrew-sullivan-how-obama-s-long-game-will-outsmart-his-critics.html

    Among other things, Sullivan says:

“Obama’s foreign policy, like Dwight Eisenhower’s or George H.W. Bush’s, eschews short-term political hits for long-term strategic advantage. It is forged by someone interested in advancing American interests—not asserting an ideology and enforcing it regardless of the consequences by force of arms. By hanging back a little, by “leading from behind” in Libya and elsewhere, Obama has made other countries actively seek America’s help and reappreciate our role. As an antidote to the bad feelings of the Iraq War, it has worked close to perfectly.”

        January 16, 2012 at 3:26 pm

        Just Andrew’s caveat:

A caveat: I write this as an unabashed supporter of Obama from early 2007 on. I did so not as a liberal, but as a conservative-minded independent appalled by the Bush administration’s record of war, debt, spending, and torture. I did not expect, or want, a messiah. I have one already, thank you very much. And there have been many times when I have disagreed with decisions Obama has made—to drop the Bowles-Simpson debt commission, to ignore the war crimes of the recent past, and to launch a war in Libya without Congress’s sanction, to cite three. But given the enormity of what he inherited, and given what he explicitly promised, it remains simply a fact that Obama has delivered in a way that the unhinged right and purist left have yet to understand or absorb. Their short-term outbursts have missed Obama’s long game—and why his reelection remains, in my view, as essential for this country’s future as his original election in 2008.

          Wow. Just wow.

Needless to say, I will never agree with Andrew Sullivan on everything — he’s conservative and I’m a proud liberal. However, he may be the last thinking conservative in America today — at least the only one putting his words out there.

Now that I have read his piece, in its entirety…I can say, aside for the glaring inaccuracy of his statement on indefinite detention, that this is a thought out, reasoned and well written piece. Mr. Sullivan has finally figured out what all of US knew all along. That PBO plays the long game, and as Sullivan points out: What liberals have never understood about Obama is that he practices a show-don’t-tell, long-game form of domestic politics. What matters to him is what he can get done, not what he can immediately take credit for.

He bashes the left AND the right….Chips, you have many choices to choose from if you choose to highlight this article. Good Read!

You’re so welcome:) Some kind soul posted a tiny blurb of this yesterday, and try as I might…I couldn’t find the entire article! I actually found it on Randi’s website this afternoon, and was joyous!
He confounds me as well, at one time I thought I read that he supported RP..WTF? It is apparent to me that with this article, he has come to his senses and does, in fact, realize what this amazing man has done, in spite of all the obstacles put in his way…and the absolute MESS he inherited. The fact that he has done, what he has done. in this short amount of time…is nothing short of breathtaking.I am grateful for this man every.single.day.

With the reach of Newsweek, it is my fondest hope, that as people read this and reflect HONESTLY, on these last few years…they will come to realize what we all know. That this man deserves another term, and he continues to have the best interests of the American people in his heart every single day.He continues to be The Only Adult In The Room.

Good thought, Africa. I’ve avoided Newsweek for years because of its cheerleading for many of GW’s inane policies, but we should get his one and also write an LTE. You know that the trolls are even now composing anti-Obama screeds to send to Newsweek, so we need to get going to balance the numbers. Sometimes Newsweek will even make an editorial comment about how many pro and con letters they received.

Sullivan’s piece was thoughtful and deserves all the praise. What he wrote, however, was really nothing new. Smartypants has been exploring the President’s long range approach for quite sometime. She has written some of the most insightful pieces on this topic on her blog. Sadly, because she is not a member of the MSM, very few people got a chance to read her excellent analyses. The same is true of all the excellent pieces by Deaniac and his colleagues at the TPV. Most of Deaniac’s posts focused on the long range policies of the President that were being totally ignored by the holier than thou so called progressives. Nevertheless, I am glad that Andrew Sullivan, with access to MSM, was able to write this excellent article that will reach a much wider audience.

    • January 16, 2012 at 4:04 pm

Pres. Obama’s foreign policy is by in large Bush 41’s. Both are from the Scowcroft school of FP. It will be interesting if Scowcroft Republicans come out in support of Pres. Obama come the general, because Romney’s FP team is packed with Bush NeoCons. Scowcroft pragmatists and NeoCons don’t see eye-to-eye on anything.

    • January 16, 2012 at 3:30 pm

I have no more respect for the guy. Not that I had much respect for Huntsman to begin with but he didn’t even try to play hard to get. He could have dropped out, laid low and then when its down to two come out and say ‘Of the two GOP candidates, Romney is better suited”

        January 16, 2012 at 3:33 pm

That’s what someone with political savvy would do, gb. For him to have been such a highly placed diplomat, you’d think he understand the optics better. He’s pretty much dumped his chances for any further political office anyway, unless maybe the people of Utah want him back.

      • January 16, 2012 at 3:50 pm

I was just writing basically the same thing. This seemed forced – the GOP is so terrified of the primary lasting past SC that they’re in panic mode.

      • January 16, 2012 at 5:27 pm

Even the disgraced and repugnant John Edwards played his cards better when it came to endorsing a presidential candidate. For a former ambassador, Huntsman has no negotiating savvy.

    • 65 Dudette
      January 16, 2012 at 3:30 pm

No integrity whatsoever. We’re better off not having him as Ambassador anyway.

By the way, the Chinese were so thrilled that we sent such an accomplished, yet down-to-earth Chinese-American replacement in Gary Locke (former Sec of Commerce), he’s pretty much a rock star. So nobody misses Huntsman there either.

Gary Locke was governor of Washington State from 1996-2004. Many of us were pleased to see him step up to SOC in the Obama cabinet, and feel for certain he will excel as Ambassador to China. As first lady, Mrs. Locke made many trips to China, often accompanied by a group of educators, particularly with early childhood education as a focus point. The groups were very welcomed by the Chinese, although they came away feeling they had been shown only the finest examples of Chinese ECE programs. So the foundation for continued work with the Chinese government had been well placed by the Lockes.

Hahahahahaha. They really coined the perfect name “Dem Rapid Response.” This ad hits the nail on the head. Huntsman looks like a wimp, a coward, and a hypocrite for touting the lack of trust the American people have experienced at the hands of politicians who speak out of both sides of their mouths and who do one thing with the left hand and at the same time, do something else with the right hand; when he turns around and does the same thing he was crusading against. He points out qualities that make Mitt a fundamentally flawed candidate to carry the GOP banner in 2012 and then he turns around and endorses him? Turns around and makes his Youtube videos against Romney private? He’s just proven once again, that he like Willard, has no core.

    • January 16, 2012 at 3:39 pm

trying to scrub his internet attack adds (he really does not understand cyperspace, does he?) as Romney dumped/destroyed files and bought up old computers from his time as Mass. gov.; two peas in a decaying pod, indeed.

      January 16, 2012 at 8:42 pm

UT, thank you for this excellent comment! You totally nailed the lameness of Huntsman’s endorsement of Romney. It turns out that Huntsman is just as fake as Romney.

  9. January 16, 2012 at 3:44 pm

Huntsman could have waited a month – his endorsement wouldn’t matter in SC, Fla or Nv anyways – and then could have endorsed and it might have seemed a bit more genuine. However endorsing as he withdraws, not three days after attacking on “I like firing people” and saying Romney is unelectable because of it rings incredibly hollow.

And it will hurt Huntsman in 2016, because nobody should take his ads or attacks seriously because he proved today he doesn’t believe what he says in them. And in his endorsement he mentions Romney once – and Romney couldn’t even be bothered to be there.

    • 74 Ladyhawke
      January 16, 2012 at 3:56 pm

Totally agree saintroscoe. Why did Hunstman make skid marks to endorse Romney so quickly? We all understand that the opponents are going to eventually rally around the nominee in the end. But doing it so quickly really looks odd and weak. And it was just days ago that Huntsman was indignant because Romney (now his BFF) slammed him for working for President Obama. I remember Tweety and several gasbags going on and on about that moment and how important it was. A turning point. I look back on that moment now and just shake my head. These people are totally devoid of any core convictions.

Huntsman always lacked judgement, vision, strategy, focus, character, foresight, integrity…

A well-rehearsed but incredibly fluffy, shallow, greedy, short-sighted, self-serving, lazy opportunistic phony who conveniently abandoned his mostly monolithic state to take an ambassadorial position he thought he could exploit to elevate his resume while lining his family business pockets,…

Abandons said ambassadorship just 2 years in to run against his stunningly evolved, hardworking, brilliant, focused, strategic, honorable, visionary of a boss…

Predictably but foolishly buying into his own hype and the flattery of a handful of dubious folks comprising of bitter McCainites and vindictive PUMA’s who egged him on to run…not necessarily because they completely believed in him, his ability and his inevitability…

He ‘looked’ the part and had studied enough videos of his boss, crammed in as much as he could and unconvincingly spit out soundbites and exact quotes and phrases of President Obama’s…

But seeing as it was really very slim pickings, that was good enough for his backers in their hate-blinding quest to take down President Obama…

Huntsman’s vanity and lack of judgement did him in, but worse still, his brief stint in the sun exposed him for the incredibly shallow, hollow actor who has mostly spent time trying to look and play the part, thanks to papa, papa’s money and the hierarchical stranglehold on and control of the uniquely un-diverse Utah…

  10. January 16, 2012 at 3:49 pm

Ole Huntsman looks plum tuckered out at the end of his campaign, lol. Towards the end he sounded like he was on heavy doses of Nyquil. No pep whatsoever, and the perpetually runny/stuffy nose of a toddler. I hope he’s back in Utah taking a nap with his blankie.

Only thing missing from this ad is Jon’s assessment of our PBO as a “REMARKABLE LEADER” — which of course is also still true. 😉

Polling now doesn’t matter. There is so much polling being done, and will be done between now and the election – and all supposedly professional companies with solid enough reputations are finding different results – sometimes radically so.

Was that CNN poll done over the weekend? What were it’s demo break down? Did they switch their demo break down since they last polled?

Jovie, You are someone whose comments I always follow because in my opinion you do really good research, and you have passion. I share your passion for the re-election of President Obama, to elect a majority in the House, and to expand to 60+ democrats in the Senate. Before the start of the 2012 election year, there were times I was fearful no one was paying attention to the nastiness coming from the other side. One of the ways I have calmed myself is to be active with OFA. Recently, I participated in a discussion about the upcoming election, and it helped to hear and see that the things we worry about are the very issues they are addressing in the campaign. What I heard reminded me of the 2008 campaign with added nuance. Also, I get a “Daily White House Snapshot,” and I go to WhiteHouse.gov for information. The one thing that helps me personally is my resolve to do at least one thing each day to make sure President Obama gets a second term. I am really impressed by what I see of the official 2012 campaign efforts. One of the recent efforts is the Project Runway where notable designers will design items for purchase through the barackobama.com store. From now on, I will go to the web site to purchase gifts that I buy in 2012. The campaign needs money, that is one way to donate a portion of the purchase price, and you have visible items for others to see which may make them likely to support the President’s re-election. Also, all of the items sold in the online store are “Made In America!”

I have long feared that the constant anti-Obama furor that the Republicans feel is causing Independents and others to feel like voting against the president not necessarily because they don’t like him or what he’s done, but only because they want the political climate to calm down and they may feel getting the president out of the WH is the easiest way to do it, unfortunately. This has been a real concern for me.

Just heard a woman caller on Ed Schultz’s radio show say she was a Republican that voted for Obama the last time and was voting Ron Paul this time. She went on to say it was because RP warned everyone the Depression was coming. Ed argued with her and didn’t let her just get away with it when she said Obama had an all Dem majority the first two years and didn’t get much done. He argued the obstruction and blockage from Congress. Anyhow, my point is Ron Paul is getting support from some nonthinking people. Even when Ed mentioned RP’s viewpoint on healthcare too.

I just want all of us to do all we can to make sure Obama’s appeal remains wide and expands, not shrinks. It’s the only way he can win. That said, I am skeptical of all polls these days. I don’t trust any of them. It’s become too much of a business instead of a service. I’ve been polled a couple of times by GOP Rasmussen, and it is true that by the framing of the questions, a polling org. can pretty much get whatever result they may be seeking. And then the media picks and chooses which polls and numbers fit the stories they want to push.

    • January 16, 2012 at 5:07 pm

Sorry to be cranky but may I just say how irritating I find these polls posted on this site. Forgive me if others find them enlightening. The only real “polls” that will ultimately matter will be votes cast in November.

      • 107 nathkatun7
        January 16, 2012 at 9:43 pm

Aquagranny, you are not alone. I feel the same way you do. I just don’t see the purpose being served by the constant posting of polls, more than 10 months before the elections. Why must we who support the President buy into the mainstream media obsession with polls? Why must we be constantly bombarded with negative polls that are aimed at discouraging us? Some of these polls are aimed at legitimizing Willard “Mitt” Romney and serve absolutely no predictive value as to what will happen on Nov. 6, 2012.

Like you, Aquagranny, the only thing that matters to me are the real votes that will be cast on November 6, 2012. Right now, my focus is to work as hard as I can, and donate as much as I am able to, in order to make sure that President Obama will get 270 electoral votes and be re-elected for four more years. As a student of history, I also distinctly remember how polls/predictions turned out in the Presidential election of 1948. What if Harry Truman, who is now a hero of some progressives though they abandoned him in 1948, had paid attention to the polls that were so sure he would be defeated?

One of the main reasons I left TPM is that site’s obsession with polls. I just hope that on this marvelous site we try our best to ignore all the mainstream media’s demoralizing tactics and stay focused on working to re-elect this good man. That is why I make a point of skipping comments and links that has to do with polls, even those that favor the President. I do that because I strongly believe that this juncture they are all useless. The best evidence of the uselessness of the polls is what has happened to all the “flavor of the month” GOP front runner presidential candidates. Between now and November 6, there is a lot that could happen to influence the real outcome of the election despite all these daily polls.

Ignore all of these polls right now. They absolutely don’t matter. What matters right now is if Obama is raising adequate amount of money and he is organizing big time on the ground. Those two things can make the difference in a tight race. It can be the difference between winning and losing.

Right now Obama is the most organized candidate especially over the GOP candidates.

In keeping with Mr Sullivan’s piece, I think it is worth noting President Obama’s long game with Jon Huntsman. He neutralized Huntsman as a threat early on by offering (and somehow persuading him to accept) the post as ambassador to China. Without his ambassadorial stint under PBO, he might have been a formidable candidate. More of the long game strategy that PBO ‘s opponents ignore or don’t understand at their peril.

There was no ‘persuasion’ and if Huntsman had half a brain, he should have turned it down and focused on his barely months old second term gubernatorial stint…

The only thing I’ll say is that a lot of polling had us losing the House and the seats we lost in the Senate before the vote in 2010 midterms. We have to pay attention to them to at least see which way the wind is blowing, generally.

We cannot deny that this will be a close election. The Republicans have done a bang-up job polarizing this country in a way I haven’t seen in my 30+ years on this earth.

Another interesting take away from the Sully piece –

“Instead, Obama reversed Bush’s policy of ignoring Osama bin Laden, immediately setting a course that eventually led to his capture and death. And when the moment for decision came, the president overruled both his secretary of state and vice president in ordering the riskiest—but most ambitious—plan on the table.”

Both Sec. Clinton and VP Biden advised against the raid. Wow. That’s arguably the two opinions he’d have to depend on in such a situation. I have to assume Gates wanted to go for it. Because if you had VP, Sec of State and SecDef against it that would be too much to overrule.

      THE END OF ‘CELEBRITY GENERALS’

      ===============================

Remember during the administration of President George W. Bush – all we ever heard was General Petraeus says this and General Petraeus says that. The mantra was whatever the generals say. Senator John McCain could not speak without mentioning General Petraeus in every other sentence. Why does a general need a public relations team??

Fast forward to President Obama. It’s not just what the generals have to say. President Obama gets input and advice from his entire National Security Team. But in the end, he makes the decision. Just like he made the decision to take action to get OBL. Everyone did not agree with it. But that’s what it means to be Commander In Chief. He made the final decision. The buck stops with him.

Rachel Maddow had an excellent segment last week with Michael Hastings of Rolling Stone (The Runaway General). He reported on the General McChrystal debacle (criticizing the civilian leadership in the government) that subsequently got him fired. He is also the author of The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan. It was a fascinating behind the scenes discussion about the “celebrity generals’ phenomenon. Thankfully, it appears the era of celebrity generals is being phased out.

I was thinking who is she talking to. Then I heard her yelling OBAMA, OBAMA, OBAMA, OBAMA. I immediately started laughing. Then she said, “I LOVE OBAMA, OBAMA, OBAMA!” When she got off the phone she said, “one of these crazy republicans just called and asked me would I vote for him and I said NO then they asked who would I vote for and I screamed OBAMA!! Then they asked did I favor OBAMA and I said yes, I love him. They said, we’re going to hang up now and I said, good get of my phone with this mess!” You guys, I was laughing so hard. I bet they know better than to call her number again. They have not called my phone yet and I hope they never do, for their sakes. 🙂

PBO exemplifies the saying “It’s lonely at the top.” He knew he would be in the trash heap of history if this failed, and he was willing to take this calculated risk, because, as he said so many times, of the professionalism and capabilities of Seal Team 6. He used his capabilities in a striking way, the way they are supposed to be used.
He also reminds me of MLK’s line “I have been to the mountaintop, I’ve seen the promised land…..” The President KNOWS what good can happen with patience, eschewing the easy political gain.
This is what I think the media has been doing since January 20, 2009: Walking back their enthusiasm for him during the campaign….we all remember Tweety’s “tingle down his leg” I think he has been trying to live that down since then. As Sullivan said, the “hype.” If you read what PBO actually said, it is not what the media hyped. Too many people believe what is said ABOUT him, not what he actually says.
I remember Howard Fineman critiquing his inaugural address…..of all people to critique PBO!…..but the President didn’t wax hysterical and hyperbolic, he was businesslike, and set out pretty clear objectives…the media wanted raving hyperbole.

  23. January 16, 2012 at 4:34 pm

Regarding Sully’s take on the DADT long game repeal, I feel Pres. Obama is doing this with same-sex marriage as well. He wants to be unprovocative as possible on hot button issues to take the hair-on-fire politics out of it. I believe he’s a same-sex marriage supporter, but he’s offering himself up as an example to the many, many who are legitimately on the fence. Those folks who might say they support same-sex marriage when polled publicly, but in the privacy of a voting booth, cast their ballot for the opposite. California and Maine both has same sex marriage props voted down after all – not exactly red state America either of them.

So in struggling with the issue and evolving, he’s using himself as an example to others to help them gradually warm to the idea. It might be slow, painfully so, and a lot of people are being hurt now – but change, drastic change, doesn’t happen over night. I fully expect same sex marriage to be legal and law of the land sometime in Pres. Obama’s second term. He understands that as a hot button political issue it needs to be decided outside of the political sphere – in the courts. I can’t imagine the Supreme Court ruling against same-sex marriage once it finally get there. There is simply no grounds they could choose to support bigotry and discrimination – the otherside cannot prove harm done to them if same sex marriage is allowed. However same sex couples can point to the disadvantages and harm they face by it being banned.

Not too often does Conservatives agree on anything with Pres. Obama but many times I’ve heard them defend themselves to their gay marriage stance by saying “I agree with President Obama on this…”. So what happens when SCOTUS rules banning same-sex marriage is unconstitutional and Pres Obama comes out and said he agrees with the ruling – Conservatives will not be able to rant and rave at Pres. Obama’s political radicalism and make a huge issue out of the change because it was done in the courts and the current SCOTUS is 5-4 conservative for all intents and purposes. I could eventually see a 7-2 SCOTUS ruling, with Kennedy, Roberts and Scalia siding with the liberal wing. Now there will be language in it to please the religious institutions as there should be – but in the end same sex marriage will be treated exactly like opposite sex marriage in the eyes of the law and it will be called marriage.

There was someone above that mentioned English spelling in the post and I agree. There were more words than one in the post spelled in the English style not the American style.

I was scammed just last month on my email account with the scammer pretending to be me and making contact with all of my email address book. I travel a lot but was an elementary teacher. So some knew it wasn’t me by the incorrect spelling, yet others thought it could be due to the travel aspect. The old I was in England on a trip and beaten up and robbed and I needed cash atory was used. It is a mess to clean up afterwards but I was warned with a phone call from my daughter and was able to take care of it and get my email address straightened out quickly. I couldn’t get back into my email though as the address and info was changed so it took a phone call. It actually took all day to get through it all but I was able to warn my contacts quickly. Environmentalists note that in December 2010, according to Boehner’s financial disclosure forms, he invested $10,000 to $50,000 each in seven firms that had a stake in Canada’s oil sands, the region that produces the oil the pipeline would transport. The firms include six oil companies — BP, Canadian Natural Resources, Chevron, Conoco Phillips, Devon Energy and Exxon — along with Emerson Electric, which has a contract to provide the digital automation for the first phase of a $9.4 billion Horizon Oil Sands Project in Canada.

Hmmm… Santorum’s Healthcare Pitch Sounds An Awful Lot Like Obamacare For The Elderly
    Brian Beutler January 9, 2012, 2:11 PM

Ever since Republicans in Congress voted overwhelmingly for Paul Ryan’s budget, the GOP has expected its leading Presidential candidates to back a similar Medicare privatization scheme. Most of them have followed suit. Rick Santorum is trying to have it both ways. During Sunday morning’s NBC debate, the come-from-behind winner of the Iowa caucuses talked about his Medicare pitch to voters.

If he truly supports the original Ryan plan, then he’s misleading seniors about how expensive his plan will be for them. If, by contrast, he wants seniors to enjoy the same health benefits as members of Congress, it’s still privatization — but he’s basically calling for Obamacare for seniors, while simultaneously trashing Obama’s record on health care.

By the way, did anyone else watch Oprah’s interview of Chris Christie last night on OWN? It was illuminating, even Chritie knows it is not going to be easy to defeat President Obama. Christie said it was too late to advice Obama but if he was asked a year ago, he would’ve told PBO to make John Boehner his best friend, call him, have him over at the white house often and play golf with him often! But now it is probably too late because everyone is in a campaign mode. But Christie said he would be ready in 4 years to run for President. Christie said PBO is the shrewdess politician he has ever met and the best campaigner! Christie also said that Romney has the qualifications to be president but has a problem communicating and connecting with ordinary people.

But the Koch brothers know Christie-Cream would lose to PBO–b/c PBO is a much better communicator and a whole lot healthier looking, too.

Mitt Romney’s campaign has invited a trio of anti-illegal-immigration advocates to act as surrogates in the spin room after Monday’s debate in South Carolina, according to Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach (R), one of the surrogates.

Kobach is best known for helping Arizona lawmakers to write a controversial anti-illegal-immigration bill that has since been adopted in other states — including South Carolina.

He said he will be joined by Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), who has said all illegal immigrants should be deported and won his seat by hammering then-Rep. Chris Cannon (R-Utah) for supporting amnesty for undocumented immigrants, and Bay Buchanan, a longtime conservative activist who was a senior adviser on former Rep. Tom Tancredo’s (R-Colo.) 2008 presidential campaign. All three have endorsed Romney.

Hispanics will come out in droves, when they see this. Why is Robney
alienating Hispanics. This is stupid! Anyways…

Saw that segment and Andrew said he was a Reagan supporter then and an Obama supporter now as he feels both were transformative for their times.

In another era Jon Huntsman would have been the front runner to get the GOP nomination. Now he’s reduced to supporting a flip flopping empty suit.

They are protesting the Emergency Financial Manager legislation that disenfranchises citizens in Michigan by dismissing their elected leaders if the city/school district is taken over by a Financial Manager. Anyone who isn’t sure about voting President Obama and every other Democrat they can get their hands on into office ought to come to Michigan to see what destruction a Republican governor and legislature can do.

Crit Luallen says if she runs statewide again it ‘would be for governor’
    By Ryan Alessi| December 29, 2011

As two-term state Auditor Crit Luallen finishes up her tenure this week, she already is being courted by her fellow Democrats to prepare to run for something else, such as U.S. Senate. But Luallen has her eye on a different office. “My real skills and abilities are at the state level … I really have more background and experience and ability in dealing with state policy and state budget matters,” Luallen said.

Luallen said she still hasn’t made a decision about her political future but will decide her intentions — specifically about running in that the U.S. Senate race — before the end of 2012. But she said the gridlock in Washington — and McConnell’s role in that as a member of leadership — provides “an opportunity for an opponent who has strength and credentials.”

@ppppolls: Our poll tomorrow has Obama with his best national standing against Romney since May…good way to start the year

Ok somebody how do I get a tweet to show the white background and stuff?

    • January 16, 2012 at 7:09 pm

On the tweet you like – click on the link that says the time it was posted ie “12 minutes ago” that will bring you to a separate page for the tweet – from there just copy the address from the address bar from your browser of choice and then paste that address here. The rest takes care of itself.

Hi everyone, regarding Mr. Sullivans article let’s hope people are now getting it about our prez. I say better late then never.

  46. January 16, 2012 at 6:26 pm

Love Sullivan’s article. I will be buying multiple issues of Newsweek and be passing them out. Romney has been in the spot light because of the primaries, he is the “hot” canidate, but like Sullivan stated…Obama plays the long game. Let the repugs crown their nominee, Obama has yet to start, he is waiting patiently to have their offical nominee. And yes…I do believe 45-48% of the American population are DUMB, but 52% can give us 4 more years…lets just be sure they can vote.
    Thank you Mr. Sullivan!

I don’t care how much any of them deny it, Obama’s critics (the one’s who hate him so viscerally) just can’t accept that we have a black man for president. It’s as simple as that.
