that thing tonight

Charles P. Pierce (Esquire): Willard must be destroyed. Seriously, isn’t that what we’re all hoping for this weekend, when the 10,987th and 10,988th of 12,322 scheduled debates between the Republican presidential contenders are held?

…. N. Leroy Gingrich demonstrated quite clearly on Tuesday night that his sole purpose in political life now is the removal of Willard’s spleen with a melon baller….

…. Attack politics is Gingrich’s legacy. It is his only material contribution to the political history of this country … nasty, hopelessly shameless, comically megalomaniacal, and altogether about as healthy to the political dialogue as a case of the mange…

…Other than Gingrich’s descent back to the Dark Side, the biggest question on Saturday night is who will hammer Rick Santorum, Papist nutter and new GOP It Boy……

I’m glad that she asked it the way she asked it, because it gave him a chance to lie again. White women should ask the question. White men should ask the question. Native Americans should ask him the question.

Indeed! Our s called members of the 4th Estate are a joke! The so called MSM are so afraid of offending the Republican/teabag right wing sensibilities that they facilitate all the lies and absurdities uttered by Romney, Santorum, Gingrich, Perry, Bachmann, Cain, Boehner Cantor, McConnell, Boss Limbaugh, Boss Hannity, FOX News and that RNC Chair, whose name escapes me at the moment.

I agree with you, nospin. They can’t take anything away from First Lady Michelle Obama. Here’s a re-post from the previous thread:

Now this is interesting–in reference to your question about who spoke to the writer, dotster. I went back and read Jodi Kantor’s first, and only, interview with the Obamas in 2009. Actually, I thought it was a good article because it allowed the President and the FLOTUS to express themselves quite candidly with the author inserting her preconceptions and assumptions. In addition, the individuals inside the administration, for the most part, were named and spoke on the record. What I find interesting is the fact that it seems as though Kantor has omitted context and backstories to paint an unflattering picture of the FLOTUS. After reading the 2009 interview, my admiration for the Obamas deepened from getting a glimpse into their lives, knowing how politics has impacted them, and watching them successfully navigate the bumps in the road and grow to become a positive force that is thoroughly committed in making the lives of all Americans better than what it was before they arrived at the White House– even though many people in this country don’t appreciate their efforts. Makes me think that perhaps Kantor tweaked the material she gleaned from the article to pique the public’s interest in her book…because there was nothing negative that I could see from the interview which could be used to criticize them, unless you made something up or slanted the material that you already had in your possession.

I’d be interested to hear what what others think about that interview. Here’s the link:

          Hello All:

First, I did not know who to pull for last night since both Detroit and New Orleans need the good feelings that come from having a team to pull for. I know all the problems w/sports teams in that they take more from cities than they give, but i have family in Detroit, so…

First: I read the NYTimes piece a couple of days ago, and like other NYTimes Obamas’ “profile” stories, it seems not to have gotten much traction. I think FLOTUS is so firmly fixed in the country’s imagination in a good way, that it is difficult to penetrate what people already think about her – especially with poorly, weirdly sourced stories (like: the last line paraphrased…”aides looked knowingly at each other.”) Really? Really?

I remember C. Matthews saying something about “stories” about FLOTUS being unhappy and “not grateful,” but since he was comparing her to the ever-“grateful” J.Kennedy (smile!)…I ignored him. Maybe he knew this NYTimes thing was coming…

Just a note: I read it, and my first impressions were: Weirdly-sourced/leaps to conclusions w/out much background…and this FLOTUS, like others, is trying to reconcile her grown-up, post-1950s, strong, professional identity with a role crafted in June Cleaver mythology.

          and so it goes…

Also: This FLOTUS is a strong, fiercely protective wife and mother AND citizen who is clear about race and the U.S. If she is the spirit behind the activity of last week, all I have to say to Michelle Obama is: Thank you!!!!!

And I hope she does not allow them to talk her down from her and her daughters’ stylishness! I (and everyone I talk to) absolutely LOVE it! We see it as one big Chicago f-you!

          Everyone have a wonderful day!

        • January 7, 2012 at 9:02 pm

There was a good cartoon during the Clinton administration of Hillary walking along a road with an ephemeral vision of Mrs. Roosevelt beside her who said, “You should have heard what they said about me, Hillary.” I remember how they made fun of Hillary’s hair styles. They made fun of Jackie Kennedy’s Hair — called it a floor mop. Cute. It’s so easy to ridicule when you haven’t a thoughtful thing to say about a person.

There are no shortage of jerks to shoot at a vulnerable target, but you’re right luci1119 and anniebella and Pamela — Michelle Obama is strong, she’ll more than survive a crackpot book that I wouldn’t touch with a lodge pole. But I’m going to send an “I love you Michelle” message to her anyway.

There was a time in my life when I had two coworkers that were telling lies about me and I had a hard time as I could not understand why they would do that. I had not done anything to them or anyone. Someone told me about how people who are not confident in themselves will lie about someone else inorder to feel better about themselves. I remember the advice I had read that said If someone says something mean or untrue about you live your life so no one will believe it. I always thought that was a very good piece of advice. I continued on in my life taking that advice to heart and found no one believed their lies anyhow.
I am thinking no one will believe the lies about Michelle either unless they alrady think similar thoughts due to their own beliefs. Most people who have seen our President and First Lady in action will not believe the lies.

It turns out the author is not as intimate with the Obamas as she thinks….she met them 3 years ago and only 24 minutes with them. Also, it turns out that the stories out there are the only salacious ones in the entire book. Yawn.

I totally agree with you Pamela about the strength of Michelle Obama, as well as the President, to overcome hateful attacks. Most African Americans have been trained, by experience, to endure such irrational hatred if they dare compete successfully with privileged white people. The most important question, however is: “will the majority of American of all races see through these unfounded racist attacks on the President and the First lady?” To be honest, I really don’t know the answer to my question. On the basis of the way the so called respectable national media have been cooperating with right wingers in denigrating the President, I am not very optimisic.

Thank you. That was a nonsensical exchange I had once on the orange: black folks were sensitive to criticism in general and so sensitive to criticism of the President (and by extension the First Lady). Once my head stopped going bongety-bongety, I pointed out that criticism is something we get on the regular our entire lives. I further observed that we are offended because the language being used is offensive.

Here are two items to consider as we watch the know it all gasbag fake historian who pioneered the art of negative politics.

    1) FUNDAMENTALLY: Newt Gingrich’s Favorite Word

By now, we’ve all become familiar with Newt Gingrich’s habit of using a few choice adverbs to make the things he says sound just a bit more intelligent to his listeners. Profoundly. Deeply. Frankly. But none of them are as vital to the Gingrich lexicon as fundamentally (along with its cousin, the adjective fundamental). While this appears to be Gingrich’s favorite word in the English language, you could also argue that he uses the word so often, and so reflexively, that it’s become virtually meaningless to him. In a single 2008 address to the American Enterprise Institute, he used the words fundamentally or fundamental a total of eighteen times.

Newt Gingrich, you might say, is the world’s most hard-core fundamentalist.

    2) THE GOPAC MEMO: Newt’s advice on language to use to describe his/GOP opponents (Democrats)

‘Language: A Key Mechanism of Control’

But the clearest expression of Gingrich’s philosophy of media came in a GOPAC memo entitled “Language: A Key Mechanism of Control.” Distributed to GOP candidates across the country, the memo’s list of words for Democrats and words for Republicans was endorsed by Gingrich in a cover letter: “The words in that paper are tested language from a recent series of focus groups where we actually tested ideas and language.” Next time you hear Gingrich complain about media focusing on the negative, refer back to these lists.

You recall Tavis Smiley was disinvited to the MLK luncheon in Peoria, IL. The group that was hosting the event at the Peoria Civic Center was called Public Employees for Community Concerns (” … made up of African-American employees in management and administrative positions within city government”).

They were responding to members of what apparently is an influential local group called the Colored Ladies Book Club. Here’s how members of the club felt, upon saying that instead of paying $40 to attend the luncheon, they’d donate that to PBO’s re-election campaign – if Smiley were going to be the guest speaker:

Obviously, I didn’t find any evidence that everyone locally from the AA community agrees with the book club members’ decision to shut him down (found a few negative comments, after I did a search locally, such as from the Peoria Journal Star newspaper), but some definitely do:

re: The PL and Repug attack of Miche.

So after reading that ridiculous article, excerpt, whatever, that Kantor wrote, I have come to the conclusion that yes they are trying to damage Miche in order to lower PBO’s re-election chances, but, most importantly, I’ve concluded that it won’t work. The comparison is being made to Hillary Clinton, but in truth, there is no comparison. Though I was too young to remember, I know from history that from the outset of Billy Boy’s presidency, he and his wife presented a united presidential front, a front that made clear that there was little daylight between the East and West Wings. One got the sense that Hillary likely had her nose stuck in almost everything that crossed Bill’O-The- Clown’s desk as president. Even Billy Boy said while campaigning that voters would get “two for the price of one.” So Hillary’s reputation as a hard nosed, overly involved First Lady had been set from the get go, so it was quite easy for repugs to really give it to her because there was clear evidence that she was too overly involved in the office of the presidency i.e.: Hillarycare.

Michelle Obama however, from the get go, has largely avoided Hillary’s fate as First Lady by defining her role as, first and foremost: ‘Mom-In-Chief.’ Infact, if you read most of the articles about her and see some of the clips about her, she is referred to as just that: First Lady Michelle Obama, America’s Mom-In-Chief. This was likely one of the most brilliant things Miche did at the outset of PBO’s presidency. Mom-In-Chief. It’s relatable, it’s comforting, it’s sweet, it’s non-threatening and it is absolutely genius. It allows her to bridge gaps that are inherent in America’s and American’s political divides. Which repug mom can’t understand what it’s like raising young children? The joy in their children’s successes, the anxiety as they approach that horrible time of storm and stress aka: teenagedom? Even more brilliantly, Miche chose as her main focus two very important and patriotic components of the American ideal: our children and their health and our military men and women and their families.

At no time has Miche presented herself as a co-president. Instead, she presents herself as a wife and mother whose top priority are the health and wellbeing of her children. She presents as a woman who trusts and supports her husband and who will defend him till the very end. People like Miche despite the fact that she is PBO’s wife because she presents as genuine, kind, sweet and giving. Even when they hate her husband, most people (with the exception of Limpballs, Batshit, The Quitta and the extreme rightwing nutballs) have kind things to say about Miche.

When I read the article, I found the person portrayed on the pages of Kantor’s excerpt to be someone I didn’t know. One line talked about how Miche told staffers that she wanted things to be elegant aka expensive, because people were waiting for the first black first lady to mess up. And only, by the grace of St. Gibbs, did Miche squash her Marie Antoinette-like urge to spend, spend, spend.–What absolute bullshit. What utter tripe! Who the fuck was Kantor writing about? Michelle Obama? Our Michelle Obama? Little girl from the Southside of Chicago who worked her ass off to make a damned good living, Michelle Obama? What?!

Who was that petty person portrayed on those pages? Who on the one hand was pissed of at PBO’s staff for not being more competitive and thus allowing us to lose so much to repugs in 2010, but was spiteful enough to refuse to campaign for one of those very seats she was so ticked off at losing? Kantor is obviously a hack and a fame whore. She is a liar and a fool. No matter what she wrote in her stupid, gossipy little book, that isn’t even worthy enough to wipe my ass, it will in no way impact Miche’s approval ratings in any statistically significant way. The image Kantor paints of Miche is so strange and far off the mark of what we know of her, the image that Miche has built over the last three years, that Kantor’s trash will go nowhere. Yes, it will be like shit for the pigs at FAUX to roll in and guzzle, but it will not impact the folks who are the ones who give Miche such high approval ratings. She is no Hillary, who for all the good she tried to do, was really more interested in being co-president of these United States. Instead, Miche is just a nice lady who loves her kids, her husband and this country.

Oh hey, Rick Perry is here. And he’s having a go at Ron Paul. Why?

Ron Paul has the bit between his teeth now, and accuses Santorum of raising the debt ceiling five times. Santorum responds with a dull lecture that appears to be chapters 6 to 8 of the Rick Santorum Congressional Record, with particular attention to the awesomeness of Rick Santorum.

Yes, squabble among yourself, foolish earthlings. Soon the RomneyBot 2000 will seize power.

  47. January 7, 2012 at 9:30 pm

Newt Gingrich is asked about Ron Paul’s description of him as a “chicken hawk,” meaning that he skipped Vietnam by getting draft deferments. Which he did. “Dr Paul says a lot of things,” is Newt’s snide response but then somehow claims that because his father served in the army somehow that means Newt served genetically. 🙂

When Newt said he was married with a kid Ron Paul said he was married with two kids and served. In the Fact Check it said Newt had a student deferment due to working on his MA and then PHD. Fact Check said he didn’t serve in Vietnam due to his student deferment. My late husband was in the Air Force at that time. He had been a student getting his BS and had gone into a Masters program but deferments were not being given past undergrad degrees so he signed up prior to getting drafted before finishing his Masters. We were married ten days before he went to Basic Training. Not so sure how reliable Yahoo Fact Check is now.

    • January 7, 2012 at 9:57 pm

      Message to Romney:

“The U.S. Constitution is the work of several men, directly and indirectly. The three most notable persons whose work influenced the Constitution but who were not involved in its writing are Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Thomas Paine. The group of men involved in the writing of the Constitution are generally referred to as the “framers”.
No single individual wrote it. Twelve of the thirteen states sent delegates to the Constitutional Convention to revise the Articles of Confederation and the entire convention worked on it. After the political questions were hashed out a ‘committee of style’ was formed to put the ideas into formal words. It is generally accepted that Gouverneur Morris created most of the actual wording included in the final draft from the Committee of Style.
The original copy of the document is preserved in the National Archives Building in Washington, D.C.
The person most associated with authoring the US Constitution was James Madison, the fourth President of the United States. Primary Author: James Madison (drafted the Virginia Plan). He is known as “The Father of the Constitution.” James Madison wrote the Constitution in 1787. The constitution wasn’t passed until 1788.”

Apparently according to Yahoo’s Fact Check Perry’s Obama’s waging war on religion had to do with a Sept decision not to fund Catholic charities for victims of sex trafficking due to the Catholic charities not providing clients with access to birth control or abortions. Perry’s ad saying Something is wrong in a Country where gays can serve openly in the military and kids can’t pray or celebrate Xmas in their schools. Yahoo did a survey of over 20,000 where 58% did not agree with him.
My thought is why on a fact check source is an opinion poll given as a proof? I think polls have replaced facts in today’s society and no one seems to object to it.

Yah! The trade comments should have definitely been on the Fact Check as well as some other Willard lies but were left out. Let’s see there was a S. Korea trade trip besides the Pacific Asian Trade group that was formed without China included. It is obvious that Romney is getting away with so many unchallenged lies. I know the moderators could not address many as almost everything is a lie, but you’d think Fact Check would catch them.
One thing I noticed is after Mitt spouts his lies he has this closed mouth smug smile and a turned head listening to the next person answering a question and his eyes become almost slit-like. I used to like to watch that tv series about LIES. I think it only lasted a couple of seasons but it showed body language of people from different cultures lying and there were certain traits that were the same in all. My thoughts are Mitt may be a compulsive liar and I wonder in that case if the body language analysis would even work?

Rick Perry says he would be at a shooting range. Well he certainly needs the parctice: he shot himself in the foot here with that “Re-invade Iraq!” stuff.

In a bid for the common-man vote, Newt says he’d be at home watching “the national championship basketball”. Oh, fail! It’s the football Newt. Anyway, no one believes Newt Gingrich sits at home watching football or basketball on telly. He watches old videos of himself.

Everyone else watches the football, including Romney who claims “I love it!” Yeah I bet.

    And then there’s Ron Paul:

I’d be at home with my family but if they were in bed I’d probably be reading an economics textbook.

    • 359 hopefruit2

Romney came out unscathed because there was a concerted effort by the candidates and ABC to not attack him or challenge him. That will not serve him well going into the general. The interviewers allowed to go off on his attack Obama rants whenever he felt like not answering a question. He does very poorly when he is challenged.

But the real lesson of this debate is that this crew is the worst assembled for the nomination of a major party. As one reader notes:

The guy shows that he isn’t knowledgeable and every time he doesn’t know something he goes on the attack. He even attacks the moderators for no other reason but that he’s an idiot and he doesn’t want anyone else to know. He’s weak. The slightest wind will knock him down. He’s got no core, no conviction, no nuthin’. He’s a shell of a human being in a Brooks Brother’s suit. All PBO will have to do on the debate stage is breathe on him and Willard will melt away like the Wicked Witch of the West. What a worthless little schmuck. 🙄

I’m leaving the Republican Party. No longer can I say with a clear conscience that the Republican Party is focused on solving problems will benefit average Americans.

believe in smart government that effectively does what it should and leaves the rest to the private sector, while still recognizing the legitimacy of the existence of government. I believe in equal rights for all Americans, whether gay, straight, female, male, immigrant or naturally born. The Republican Party no longer believes in any of that.

No longer should the American people stand for the weak leadership and intellectual bankruptcy of the Republican Party. I’ll be voting for President Obama’s re-election.

5 Reasons To Be Glad You Didn’t Watch The New Hampshire GOP Debate

Final Verdict: A few initial moments of fireworks gave way to an extreme dullness where everyone on the stage not named Ron Paul seems to be competing to be Mitt Romney’s running mate. Romney’s performance was do flat that he was at time quoting his stump speech to answer debate questions. Perry looks like a dead candidate walking, and Gingrich may be joining him soon. Mitt Romney would love to run against Ron Paul, because Republicans will never support the Texas Republican. This debate was so boring that NBC News has decided that America needs to see more of these also rans tomorrow morning at 9 AM (ET).

Barack Obama should sleep well. It appears that the GOP frontrunner is made of tissue paper, because of his fellow Republicans are afraid he will fall to pieces if they tear into him.

Obama will fucking (pardon my mandarin) destroy Romney. This is not even a question. He punched McCain so hard in the 08 debates…the old man’s ears are still ringing. Mitt is not made of Teflon, unless Teflon is french for glass. He chafes at the slightest bit of criticism…he gets ridiculously ruffled when he does not know an answer to a question and starts spouting off about liberty. It won’t be a contest. This part of the General Elect…I am not worried about. What I do want to see is if Mittens will go Afghanistan. I wonder what kind of reception he would get there from the military personnel. He, unlike Paul and Perry, chose not to serve even though he was eligible and his kids chose not to serve either (both in times of war).

I will be glad when Huntsman drops out after NH as I still think he could be more dangerous than Mitt in a general election. I can’t see him finishing higher than 4th in NH, which should be enough to chase him out of the race. Romney and Paul will be 1-2, and I hope one of Newt or Santorum can run a strong 3rd. Nate Silver did tweet that there was some Huntsman momentum in late polling and he was toying with 3rd place – for a candidate than has gone all in in NH even third shouldn’t be enough to stay in, especially with SC, Fla and Nv as the next three primary states.

The strangest thing about tonight’s debate? It ended early. Or at least that’s how it appears. The debate was scheduled to go until 11pm but it seems that, somehow, they ran out of questions. Making this a strong candidate for the worst debate of the 2012 cycle.

There were other reasons why this was so deadly. Here we had Mitt Romney, the winer of the Iowa caucuses (albeit barely), and clear leader nationally, in New Hampshire and even in South Carolina. But apart from Rick Santorum early on and at the end, the other candidates gave him a free pass. Oh, there was Newt Gingrich’s attempt to criticise Romney’s business record but he cited a New York Times article in his charge. For a Republican audience, he may as well have cited Pravda.

The truth is that the Republican rivals really can’t upbraid Romney for his business record because it would put them at odds with the philosophy of the Republican party.

Deciding the winners and losers of this debate wasn’t difficult. Mitt Romney was the winner. The others showed up. It was more like watching the Harlem Globetrotters playing the Washington Generals, the rivals who lose by just enough to allow the Globetrotters to show off their skills.

Well, there was one loser: Newt Gingrich. First, he got abused by Romney for citing a New York Times article. Then he got trounced by Ron Paul for not serving in Vietnam – and frankly, claiming to be the off-spring of a soldier doesn’t make up for that. And finally he claimed he’d rather be watching a fictional college basketball championship game tonight, when in fact it’s the college football championship and it’s not even tonight (it’s on Monday).

    SNL nailed the Santorum opening.

They captured the essence of the stupid, boring, out-of-touch Santorum.

From my POV, he certainly marches to the beat of a different guitar.

Thought you might want to see/read about Gabby Giffords. The memorial was today, I believe. She looks good. What a remarkable woman she is…such an inspiration to all of us.

Over and out, thank you everyone, for another stimulating day, and thanks for the belly laughs too! I love how you all keep it real! Just like our beloved First Lady! They can never touch her fine spirit!

An ultra-rich man whose economic plan helps the ultra-rich and explodes the deficit, and who can’t be straight with the public about his own income taxes—that’s who’s leading the GOP field. He’s still probably more electable than Gingrich, or Rick Santorum, whose skeezy, Abramoff-related entanglements will soon see the light of day. But that isn’t saying much. Romney is vastly overrated by liberals as a general election foe. Sure, if the economy backslides, Romney could win, simply by not being the incumbent. But short of a new economic crisis, he’s a huge target. If Democrats want something to worry about, they can worry about the EU, or terrorism. But Mitt Romney? He may be the GOP’s only non-joke candidate, but that doesn’t mean he’s a strong one.

“Billionaire Gives $5 Million To Pro-Gingrich Group”

I trust Newt will refuse this money because he thinks SuperPacs are unseemly and destructive.

Well he can’t refuse it because of course, he has nothing at all to do SuperPacs working on his behalf. So I assume he will just condemn it.

Just a thought after watching the GOP Debate. Also after reading some Republican members being worried and thinking of voting for Obama.

I think many believe in the free Capitalistic system. I wonder if we can give them a reason for voting for PBO while still letting them save face and stick to their beliefs? My thought is ideologically the Capital system with less government interference makes sense but in the real world GREED enters in and no regulations just encourages greedy actions. PBO is for the average American and wanting them to succeed but thinks government should include helping protect us from those that only want to take advantage of us and make money off us. obvously we have to point out Mitt’s being part of the greedy one percent and include his job killing Bain corporate ideals. I am sure the Prez’s team has that in mind. We need to do it when talking to others too.

They won’t need to save face. Voting is by secret ballot. I think 2012 will be a test for the average sanity of America.

New Hampshire Debate: The Trickless-Dick Mitt Fix Is In
    By Charles P. Pierce

In brief, Saturday night may have been the most naked piece of point-shaving and game-throwing since the 1919 World Series. I’ve seen fixed prizefights where the issue was more in doubt. The other candidates went so far into the tank for Willard that they may not dry off until next August. In the 1950’s, Frankie Carbo would have had them all killed because they made it look so damned obvious. Where was the promised Gingrich assault on the frontrunner? Where was the blood, the guts, the glory? Where was the damn slasher film we all anticipated? This was a waltz, and a clumsy one. If the people in that audience had any pride at all, they’d have attacked the ABC platform and demanded satisfaction for this massive piece of consumer fraud.

    There are no words:

Palestinian Sesame Street falls victim to US Congress
With its colourful band of Muppets preaching tolerance and neighbourly love, the Palestinian version of the children’s television programme Sesame Street had become a beacon of hope for children in a region ravaged by decades of unrest.
But the cast of peace-loving characters have now found themselves in the crossfire of a political dispute between Palestinian leaders and the US Congress, and episodes have been axed for 2012.
Sesame Street – known as Shara’a Simsim in Arabic – is one of many US-funded Palestinian shows suffering after Congress froze the transfer of nearly £130m to the US Agency for International Development in October. The suspension aimed to punish the Palestinians for appealing to the United Nations for membership.
The funding suspension has affected a broad range of services in Palestine relying on American aid, including hospitals, education, government ministries and communications.
