Not trying to scold, but X mas = absence of Christ

        • December 24, 2011 at 6:47 pm

Dang it all, waltjack I had a nice long remembrance of myself at 10 years old or younger hearing this same thing, and that was 71 years ago, but I stopped to look up a word and lost it!

I never used the X and still don’t, but I did read a couple of decades ago that Xmas was perfectly fine because the early Christians used it. X actually equaled Christ. I also never sent any cutesy Christmas cards with Santa and elves and without the creche and star and shepherds and all that. But in recent years I’ve been sending wolves in snow and other wildlife. The holiday has evolved into so many things now, it’s hard to confine it to creches and stars. In fact the idea of shepherds and three wise men and their gifts and angels heralding Christ’s birth has turned into a warm story that we love to hear because it’s something we’ve always heard from early childhood.

Even snow in Bethlehem is a European artifact, it didn’t snow in the Middle East — remember ‘In the deep midwinter …” and “the land was hard as iron?” I love that hymn, I think it was a poem by Christina Rosetti set to music. Even knowing the stable didn’t look or feel like that, I still love the hymn. I remember looking out the front, west-facing window with my mother pointing to lights above the Philadelphia Navy Yard and telling me that’s the direction from which Santa would be coming and for sure it would be snowing because it always snows on Christmas (this was in New Jersey, and it sometimes did). Goodness, I must have been five years old in 1935, I haven’t a clue where my parents found the money for gifts — my father had yet to get his job back at the shipyard. The Christmas we celebrate today would have been completely foreign to people suffering through the Great Depression in 1935.

Incidentally, Chipsticks, paeans to you for putting up these photos and keeping the site going, even through a holiday and, especially, your own (probably) mad dash for Christmas presents! You are a gift, today a Christmas gift, and we love you for it.

A Merry Christmas to you and yours Chipsticks, walkjack, and everyone from Alan and Melanie and me.

Chips….you brave soul, I hope you had a good time Xmas shopping. I came here several months ago by way of Huff & Pluff…I spent the 2008 campaign season there (I didn’t know what I was missing here/had no idea) and then the headlines and comments got uglier and uglier, so I left…thank God I found you all…Chip you and the entire TOD family are such a pleasure and joy…when I let the msm/gop nonsense bring me down, I can always count on coming here to get “lifted”…you all are such a “hoot” …you guys keep me smiling and laughing…and the knowledge and wisdom are among the added blessings…I come here everyday (except Sundays/just because)…most times I don’t comment because more often than not you all express my thoughts/feelings/attitudes/opinions as if you were in my head…I am so looking forward to the 2012 campaign season…spending/sharing it here with you all is going to be a wonderful experience and the four years after that is going to be beyond anything we have ever seen before…can’t wait….OBAMA/BIDEN 2012!!!!

Repeated from the previous thread because I can’t repeat it enough:

Thank you very much for this space you have created. It is one thing to create something, it is another thing to do what you’ve done: namely persevere and nurture a reliable resource and a refuge. You’ve attracted so many smart and soulful people that I consistently learn from and look forward to teaching me in 2012. Happy holidays to you and yours. I wish the best for the best.

Co-sign to everything you said FiredupinCA and everyone else here who start and end our day at TOD. Have a safe, quick, stress-free day shopping Chipsticks. I remember doing what you did almost 30yrs ago when I was much younger. I washed my hair at 6 am one Sat Xmas eve, started shopping for presents, food, xmas tree and furniture. I had just moved into my first apartment and was hosting Xmas the next day. Once I got home at 8PM I had to get my presents wrapped, decorate my tree put my dining table and chairs together and press my hair. I look back on that day fondly and wonder how did I do that?

          Merry Christmas everyone!

Newton Leroy, a Virginia resident, and Perry did not qualify for the Virginia Republican primary for lack of signatures. And they say they can run the country.

    • 34 FiredUpInCA
      December 24, 2011 at 8:15 am

“Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich failed to collect enough signatures to appear on the Virginia primary ballot, the Republican Party of Virginia announced Saturday morning, leaving the longtime Virginia resident without a place on the state’s ballot and raising questions about his campaign’s organization.”

      Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. *Wipes tears*

Wait, what? He lives in Virginia and he couldn’t get enough signatures?

“Gingrich and his wife Callista have resided in McLean, Virginia, a wealthy suburb of Washington, for several years. Callista is active in Northern Virginia organizations, including playing the French horn in a Fairfax, Virginia band.”

But I could have sworn I heard it reported that this was a done deal?

“On Wednesday, Gingrich ensured a crowd of supporters he had met the threshold for appearing on the ballot, saying he had gathered anywhere from 12,000-14,000 signatures.”

Newt you slay me! Baghdad Bob has got nothing on you.

“Gingrich’s spokesman said Wednesday the effort to secure a spot on the Virginia ballot was meant to showcase the campaign’s ground game.”

      LOL! Cough, choke, gasp, snort.

Late getting here because I’ve been cooking and baking. I didn’t intend to post a comment other than one wishing everyone a happy holiday season, but after reading your post, FiredUp, I decided to share something I found in the on line version of my local GA paper:

“Gingrich’s campaign attacked Virginia’s primary system on Saturday, saying that “only a failed system” would disqualify Gingrich and other candidates and vowing to run a write-in campaign.”Voters deserve the right to vote for any top contender, especially leading candidates,” Gingrich campaign director Michael Krull said in a statement. “We will work with the Republican Party of Virginia to pursue an aggressive write-in campaign to make sure that all the voters of Virginia are able to vote for the candidate of their choice.”However, according to state law, “No write-in shall be permitted on ballots in primary elections.””Virginia code prohibits write-ins in primaries. He can’t do it,” said Carl Tobias, a law professor at University of Richmond.”

IMO, this confirms what I have always thought–Newt thinks laws are for other people. A President Gingrich with a majority in both houses of Congress would be a very dangerous thing.

What all the GOP candidates should do is give up, and let the outstanding President we have now keep the job, because none of them are qualified for the job. it ain’t just Newt, Perry, it’s all of them. The only one qualified is the guy we have in the Oval Office now. President Obama.

Chips just wanna say I came by this site via BlackwaterDog after she left the Great Orange Satan. DailyKos was my refuge daily throughout all of 2008. This is when I, lil ole black lady, became hooked on blogs. My favorite poster was BWD. Then almost as soon as the election was over, people started to turn on BWD with vicious, nasty, “dear leader” comments. Why were democrats fighting each other? I just wanted to look at pictures of my President and read the good stuff being done. HOLLA >>>TheObamaDiary thank God.
So Merry Christmas Chips and thanks so much for this site I can’t wait til 2012 and I bet your 6M hits will grow to 12M!

    • December 24, 2011 at 8:22 am

That is because those so called Democrats you mention are not Democrats,, but they are libertarians.
And they have infiltrated the far left, in actuality, they are far right.

      December 24, 2011 at 8:55 am

I came here the same way via Blackwaterdog, DailyKos was my oasis during the run-up to 2008. Then almost overnight BWD started to get attacked. Then BDW started her own blog which I was a faithful follower, before she left the scene she pointed us towards T.O.D and here we are.

      • December 24, 2011 at 9:03 am

Followed this same path, Don. Looks as if there are many of us. I do want to say that BWD did a beautiful job and I look forward t her coming back. There cannot be too many voices telling the truth about our president.

        • December 24, 2011 at 9:54 am

Yep that’s exactly how I got here too. I tell as many Obama supporters as I can about this site because it’s just so wonderful. It REALLY is something about how Chipstah has created this place. I’m sure she’s gotta slog through crap that we don’t see so I’m just very grateful that she has taken on this project.

thanks chips. merry christmas! and Merry Christmas to everyone at TOD 🙂

There were a mob of us, who faithful to BWD, did not know where to ‘lurk’ as she was preparing to move forward into another life expression…with our grateful blessing (still, BWD) . When she mentioned TOD, I came in and was both blown away with the high quality content, and reassured that trolling would not be acceptable or tolerated, knew I had found a place to call home in cyberspace! AND, a bright, humorous and tickly family to boot! WhoDa thunk it! Merry Christmas to each and all! Have fun today, Chips, it might be the best day of all to shop, most people are done by now!

      December 24, 2011 at 8:13 pm

      Hi Desertflower and TrumpDog,

I apologize for such a late response I just got home from doing some last minute shopping. I was an spring intern 2011 to be exact. I remember it like it was yesterday. It was truly a blessing the hours were extremely long I remember my supervisor telling me to go home at least once or twice a week. I was there for about eight months total I started off in a volunteer leadership program then in October I applied for the internship program again. ( I applied three times on the third time I got it.) In January I was accepted into the White House Internship program. Greatest eight months of my life. The work load is intense but you also get to do fun stuff too. I helped decorate the North Portico and East Room for Halloween. I participated in the take your child to work day event with the First Lady that was fun seeing the First Lady engage the kids was amazing. I didn’t get to go to the Easter Egg Roll because I was stuck in the office but like the President says there is always work to be done. I remember my first day like it was yesterday. I was so excited I couldn’t sleep. All of the interns were asked to arrive at 8:00am I was up and ready to go at 5:30am. I arrived downtown an hour earlier I didn’t want to look overly aggressive so I killed some time at the near by Starbucks. It was freezing cold outside that day and it had been snowing all the interns were trying to figure out if we were to show up two hours later due to the weather but in the end everything went very well. I love the President and the First Lady what you see is what you get they are so authentic and down to earth. I thought as an intern I would be seen not heard but often ignored. That was not the case. Everyone made it a point to make us feel special. I remember the first time I met the First Lady she spoke to me first and introduced herself as if I didn’t already know who she was, it was awesome. I still do not know if I said anything back even though I do remember shaking her hand. Her skin is so soft I definitely think the Obamas use coco butter (LOL). If you all have any questions please let me know.

You are very lucky to have had that experience…I think I don’t need to tell you that. You already know 🙂 Cherish that memory for your life. I wonder if the SS and travelers with the president are allowed to bring their family’s with them to Hawii. After all they are not on duty 24/7. Bet a lot of people would scramble for that duty.

I think some do since one of the captions said friends and family of the SS waited at the airport for the President’s arrival. If true, I’m guessing they enjoy Hawaii much better than Crawford, Texas. Just saying.

Politico says new signs of economic weakness, because consumer spending was down in november.
How can that be, when black Friday broke records, and so did cyber Monday?
    What are they talking about?

    • December 24, 2011 at 8:57 am

Unless, the labor dept took their readings before those dates?

    • 88 FiredUpInCA
      December 24, 2011 at 9:11 am

That’s because at GOPolitico up is literally down. From the article (CAPs mine):

Heading into an election year, there were new signs Friday that the economy isn’t getting much better — consumer spending ticked UP 0.1 percent in November while INCOMES ALSO ROSE just 0.1 percent.

Meanwhile, new orders for manufactured durable goods INCREASED 3.8 percent or $7.5 billion in November to $207 billion, the Census Bureau announced. This INCREASE, up four of the previous five months, COMES AFTER A SLIGHT INCREASE in October.

      Read more: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1211/70808.html#ixzz1hSbo02YZ

Nobody, especially the President, is claiming the economy is doing gangbusters. But every little bit helps and we are a long ways away from the Bush economy. The stock market closed at 7949.09 when he left office. Under the Obama economy it’s at 12,169.65. During the Bush economy we’re losing 750,000 jobs per month.

      Under Obamanomics:

“With one month remaining this year, the U.S. private sector has now added 1.67 million jobs in 2011, well ahead of last year’s private-sector total of 1.2 million, and the best year for businesses since 2006. Since March 2010, American businesses have created 2.9 million jobs.”

That’s in spite of unprecedented uncertainty in the European markets, the first credit down grade of the nation’s credit in history and the aggressive, often politically motivated, shedding of public sector jobs.

GOPolitico can find a cloud in every silver lining. It is a strange and sad gift.

      • December 24, 2011 at 9:39 am

And if we keep going at this pace, net jobs should be positive by the time of the election.
        That is key!

      • December 24, 2011 at 11:02 am

Thanks for highlighting this for those of us who don’t go to Politico, FiredUp. As noted by others above, your take is always very informative and valuable. Muchas Gracias. GoP can enjoy their cloud while the rest of us move into the sunlight.

I think you meant can’t find a silver lining in a cloud . LOL they are so pathetic.

I see again they are yukking it up over @ the John Birch Society aka FOX NOISE. The bleached blonde momkey girl bimbo and the 2 dunces next to her misinterpret intentionally what President Obama said about “LAZINESS” from the ABC Barbara Walters interview.

PRESIDENT: Right. But when I’m mad at myself, it’s because I’m saying to myself, you know what, you could be doing better; push harder. And when I — nothing frustrates me more than when people aren’t doing their jobs. Although — sorry, I shouldn’t provide two answers. The thing actually that I most dislike is cruelty. I can’t stand cruel people. And if I see people doing something mean to somebody else just to make themselves feel important, it really gets me mad. But in myself, since I tend not to be a mean person, if I get lazy, then I get mad at myself.

Notice the fools mentioned nothing about the cruelty comment. Why? Because the haters @ FOX NOISE ARE THE MOST BIGOTED, INTENTIONALLY CRUEL, AND VITRIOLIC GROUP OF NEWS CASTERS ON THE PLANET.

Like many of today’s posters, I found this blog via the same route. I am so grateful to have this uplifting, truth-telling site to regain my sanity. A thousand thanks for all the time and effort that is put into this site, may you be rewarded many times over.

  18. December 24, 2011 at 9:26 am

Good morning, Chips: Let me join in and thank you for saving me from self-destruction in 2011. I was an avid follower of Mrs. O. com. And I still think it is a great site. But after the debt ceiling in August, I felt personally that I needed more information on why this beloved family was so hated. I am AA , so I am well aware of the racial slurs. I just could not understand why some Democrats were vile, disrespectful and mean.

Well, after lurking here for months, I got all the answers to my questions and much more. I thank you for the peace in knowing that opinions are welcome, but hate is not tolerate. I have learned so much here and still learning. As a volunteer, I am able to share this knowledge to people who are just misinformed, hard to embrace change and just plain fearful due to eight years of brainwashing the repugs& co. along with msm hae fed us for decades. So thanks to our President, I am eager to learn about ours and others government. Slow to judge and crticize. And truly welcome and embrace the hope and change that our President consistently speaks of since he was Senator Barack Obama.

Thank you everyone here who lurks and posts. Merry Christmas to all. God bless you and your families. Thank you, Ms. Chips for all the sacrifices you make that helps so much to keep me sane. I am a better person. My family, friends and community are reaping the benefits.
    Happy New Year!

Good morning and Merry Christmas everyone!

Like LDS, I found this site through Mrs. O during the South America trip. I lurked for months and then decided to join the conversation. It was this site that led me to BWD and both blogrolls have helped me find other sites that I really enjoy like POU, TPV, ABL and The Reid Report. During 2008 my go-to sites were the Huffington Post, Daily Kos and, believe it or not, Mark Halperin’s The Page. After the election, I could not understand why they all went sour on PBO so quickly. It was TOD, TPV and BWD that helped me to understand what was going on and I am grateful.

Thanks, Chips for all you do and thanks to everyone for being so smart and well-informed. Whenever I’m talking to someone about politics, they are gobsmacked by my wealth of information almost to the point of speechlessness. I take great pleasure in that because once they’re quiet, I know they are listening and are ready to be persuaded.

Again, Merry Christmas Chips and thank you for TOD.

Thanks Chipsticks for this marvelous site. I, too found this through BWD. Forget how I found her…a long trail no doubt. This morning on my Facebook page, the link from the President’s site is to THE OBAMA DIARY, with a little picture of the president going down the steps of Air Force One. So…another way for people to find you, and to know that people in important places are very aware of this wonderful site.
I’m so glad the President finally made it to Hawaii. The air feels so wonderful when you arrive there! A totally different feel than anywhere else…soft, ethereal, invigorating and relaxing al lat the same time. The people there LOVE him too…just makes me feel good to know he’s there for a while.
Thank you to all the posters here…I learn and laugh and sympathize at various times, and thoroughly enjoy this. A blessed holiday season to every one.

Just a note to all the members of the TOD family…I wish you the best of the holiday season and hope that the peace and love of this season will follow all of you through the new year. May God continue to bless you and your families.

On several occasions I have made comments on this site; however, for the most part, I am a lurker. I must admit that my entire routine changed during this year. There were three sites (two were pro President Obama and Pro First Lady Michelle Obama) that I visited everyday. Actually, both of these sites lead me to this site. As a result and because I became disgusted with the comments made on the site which I did not mention, I began to gravitate here. Coming to this site has helped to eradicate the divisive and ugly rhetoric that I was reading on a daily basis on that particular site. So, thank you for the peace and calmness that you afford your readers.

I am looking forward to a spirited 2012. We, pro Obama/Biden 2012, have our work cutout for us. It’s going to take a whole lot of effort and prayer from all of us to ensure that this team is re-elected. This country cannot afford to have a GOP/TP executive at the helm of our government. Mr. Romney is not the one! In my opinion, he will serve as a puppet for the extreme right-wing. In my opinion, he is running for the presidency, not to govern; but, to enjoy the pomp, perks and prestige that comes with the office. (My view of Mr. Romney is a conversation for another time.)

    Happy holidays, TOD family.

Take a moment to look at this piece. It’s the faces of young men that have gone to war…before, during and after they have returned. As Mrs Obama so thoughtfully said in the weekly address, if you have time to give back to someone in the military, someone that has served, please do it. These men and women deserve our respect and help…getting back to life. Back to a new normal. Thank you all, veterans…we are so happy that so many can be home this holiday. We still have work to do.

I believe in this man and everything he as been doing cause I see the results myself. I don’t need pundits, GOP nutjobs and their articles, and the PUMAS or EMOPROGS of the world to inform me. Good read! (Reid:)

The Republicans clearly won 2010. They took over the House of Representatives, several key governorships and legislatures, and therefore will get the better of Census-triggered redistricting. They got the mainstream media to join their fixation on “cutting spending” and talk about it ad infinitum, rather than talking about jobs. But 2011? It was pretty much a straight sets win for President Obama and the Democrats…

Someone who recently “friended” me on FB didn’t like the links to articles I posted that were discussing Ron Paul and racism and took it upon himself to go OFF and write a nasty rant. that he now says was’t directed towards me when he and I both know I was the object of the rant. This person knew I was black when he sent the “friend” request. He is a young white guy I know through one of my co-workers. He went nuts in his rant, and I guess it’s because he likes Ron Paul. It’s okay with me if he likes Ron Paul, but he needs to learn to face the truth, and he needs to learn to accept that people are different and can post whatever they want on their FB pages. When I let him know how disrespectful he had been in his rant, he tried to walk it back. That $h!t will not work (excuse me.) He revealed himself in a way to me in his rant that he is totally unaware of. I’m good at reading between the lines and drawing the right conclusion about people, their positions, and motives. He says he’ll “unsubscribe” but remain a “friend.” NOPE. One only has one time to show his azzz to me and from that point on, I know to disassociate myself from him/her. Evidently, he thinks it okay for a politician and/or POTUS to embrace racism, if he’s Ron Paul. PBO has never shown himself to be a racist, but this guy would never entertain the thought of voting for him. I have zero use for anyone who is unwilling to view all people as human and equal. He is no longer one of my FB friends.

This is not a campaign crisis where the candidate must disavow a racist-tinged tirade from an associate. Ron Paul’s crisis is self-inflicted. Ron has to disavow Ron Paul. But before he can do that he first has to take responsibility for the words that bear his signature over and over.

I’ll be standing by to see if the media has a non-stop film festival of his tapes as they’ve done for others.

    good morning TOD family.
Been MIA for a while but I got THE best Christmas gift ever.Mom’s insurance called late last night and agreed to mom’s rehab but it won’t start until the 1st or 2nd week of January
they agreed to 20 sessions as long as it doesn’t go beyond $ 30.000 🙄
we are still talking to mom’s attorney to see what he can do about all the insurance company’s shenanigans because they agreed to rehab;then they denied 1 day before she was due to go to that place. These folks knew that we had talked to the attorney . . .
got treatment done on Monday and came down with a cold so needless to say with cooking;getting up at night to give mom her medication;helping her I feel exhausted.
I wanted to welcome all the “newbies” and thank those who have had kind words for my family and I
ALOHA POTUS and enjoy XMAS with the family and keep on kicking teabagging arses

Chipsticks…I have an idea for this coming week. Could you post a Sticky ( I think they’re called) in which we can all write what we love and appreciate about the President and FLOTUS. That sticky is how I found BWD on a link from DailyKos last year, when the days for our beloved President looked dark. That lifted my spirits so much and it is still in my Favorites file. Then, from BWD I found TOD. That chain has all come back to me now.
We would enjoy doing that, and perhaps that would relieve you for a while. We would have no lack of good things to say.

As everyone knows Mitt “Who Am I This Time” Romney is not only a flip flopper he is a prolific liar. He lies with ease and it is really disturbing. The problem is that the media rarely calls him out for his lies. I am sure this is why he does it. It is a sad commentary on the media that a presidential candidate can just make stuff up and not be challenged for his dishonesty. This is a character flaw that I am sure President Obama will be highlighting as the campaigning gets started. But any “journalist” worth his/her salt should be doing their homework and challenging outlandish claims. That seems like the bare minimum the public should expect from the media. Report the facts and let the chips fall where they may.

    ‘Welcome to post-truth politics’

Krugman concludes by predicting that Romney will face “no real penalty for running an utterly fraudulent campaign,” which will only encourage more dishonesty.

As regular readers might imagine, I strongly agree with all of this. The only point I’d add is that it’s ultimately going to be up to reporters and major news organizations to decide whether a campaign built on deliberate deception is allowed to thrive.

Happy Holidays everyone ! Thank you Chips for this site……

Early Saturday, Gingrich’s campaign released the following statement from Campaign Director Michael Krull:

“Only a failed system excludes four out of the six major candidates seeking access to the ballot. Voters deserve the right to vote for any top contender, especially leading candidates. We will work with the Republican Party of Virginia to pursue an aggressive write-in campaign to make sure that all the voters of Virginia are able to vote for the candidate of their choice.”

Newt thinks he is a ” top contender “….. I guess it must be in the Heavy Weight Division.

        December 24, 2011 at 12:49 pm

“Only a failed system excludes four out of the six major candidates seeking access to the ballot.”

No only a disorganized campaign led by a whiney, snively blowhard candidate fails to rally enough support WHERE HE HAS BEEN LIVING FOR SEVERAL YEARS to get himself on the ballot.

“President Obama became the first presidential candidate to submit his signatures for the March ballot.”

He delivered 15,000 signatures in the first week of December.

By the way, he has been living in D.C. for several years, yet he somehow managed to pass the first test of electability — getting on the ballot.

To use a Newtism, that’s fundamentally fundamental to get your name on the piece of paper.

If I was his manager when it became obvious nobody wanted to show up for free to get Newt on the ballot, I’d either Tiffany giveaway or hit Romney up for the 10,000 bucks he doesn’t need and pay a dollar per signature. Done and done.

I just happened to come across and understand the emoleft ranting about the “indefinite detention bill” that doesn’t exist. So they want President Obama to veto the ENTIRE NDAA over language that doesn’t give PBO any new powers?

Good morning Chipsticks and TOD family and to all Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, and Happy Holidays however you celebrate. It’s the holiday that reminds us of the universal commandment to love one another as brothers and sisters in the human family. It is the time of year when I sorely miss my sister and family living across the ocean. But there is also so much to celebrate: my friends and the many wonderful volunteers I have met this year, my own four-legged family (6 cats and 1 dog – all rescues) and, of course, my haven of sanity, my daily dose of encouragement and source of so much valuable information – The Obama Diary. I have been very busy these last few weeks. In adddition to building our teams locally, OFA-MA is also heavily engaged in the New Hampshire Primary. We have organized phone banks and canvasses in New Hampshire and will continue to do so right up to the primary on January 10th. But even though I don’t post very often, I visit here every day. I often spend hours late at night catching up with all the developments and commentary. I know I can always count on TOD to let me know that our President has arrived safely wherever he is traveling (yes, I do worry every time just like so many of you). I enjoy the pictures and the videos, the obvious regard for one another on this blog, the humor and the steadfast commitment to re-electing our remarkable President. So thank you, Chipsticks and all posters – you all contribute so much. I can truly say that my life is better because of you.

I found all of this quite compelling, but it got me thinking about why Republicans, especially in the House, would be so cavalier about their own electoral futures. Usually, elected politicians want to win re-election, and take some steps while in office that voters will respect and appreciate. As part of the efforts that make it seem as if GOP officials “really trying to off themselves” politically, congressional Republicans appear to be making themselves less popular, almost on purpose.

Couple all these reasons with arrogance, and those are precisely the reasons why

    Understanding ‘suicidal’ political episodes
    By Steve Benen

It wasn’t a great week for congressional Republicans, who ended up hurting themselves twice — they looked bad fighting to raise middle-class taxes, and then looked worse caving when the heat was on.

Jon Chait argued this week that GOP policymakers were so far around the bend, they looked politically “suicidal.”

The payroll tax debacle is now the third suicidal episode undertaken by the House Republicans since they took control of it at the beginning of the year. The first was when they voted almost unanimously for Paul Ryan’s budget, which was filled with grist for attack ads — huge cuts to Medicare, big tax cuts for the wealthy, deregulating Wall Street — despite it having no chance of passing this term.

The second was when they played chicken with the debt ceiling and turned a once-routine procedure into a white-knuckle game of chicken with the world economy.

And then this week, when they attempted to extract concessions in return for extending the payroll tax holiday, an anti-recessionary measure with strong support from economists, businesses, and voters. These are not just gestures. The right-wingers are really trying to off themselves.

    • December 24, 2011 at 2:55 pm

They don’t think they’re unpopular. The same people who clap at death sentences at the Republican debates call these guys and urge them to “fight” against the president. They think they’re warriors since they only really hear the cheers of their own supporters. The most diehard among them have zero experience in DC, were elected in a fluke and have a deep animosity toward anything the president does. Because they are freshmen, they don’t even have the wisdom of experience to draw on, so they think in action movie terms. Don’t back down. Shoot em. Show em who’s bigger. Politically, they are children.

      • 270 L3
        December 24, 2011 at 3:43 pm

Yes. Have you noticed their constant reliance on movie references like Braveheart and The Town and games like High Stakes Poker. It’s as though they are children re-enacting their favorite movies and games. They are thrill seekers, immature and many of them are wealthy which makes them less concerned about being voted out. But, there are those like Duffy from Wisconsin who need that check and he was one of the first teabaggers to break ranks and publicly urge support of the bill. I also think some of them are concerned about being primaried by people who are even more radical than they are. Finally, hatred of PBO has driven them crazy and they are determined to defeat him no matter the cost. Unfortunately, sometimes when you want something so desperately the opposite of what you want results.

    Lol! Lmao!

Presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich’s campaign attacked Virginia’s GOP primary election system on Saturday for keeping him off the state’s March 6 Super Tuesday ballot, a significant setback for a candidate who has surged in popularity but has struggled to organize his campaign.

The state party said that Gingrich had failed to submit the required 10,000 signatures to appear on the ballot. Texas Gov. Rick Perry also failed to qualify, the Virginia GOP said.

The Gingrich campaign responded that “only a failed system’’ would disqualify Gingrich and other candidates. It said Gingrich would pursue an aggressive write-in campaign in Virginia.

“Voters deserve the right to vote for any top contender, especially leading candidates,’’ Gingrich campaign director Michael Krull said in a statement.

    Remember the Mayberry Machiavellis?
    By Steve Benen

For all of the times American Crossroads, Karl Rove’s attack operation, is truly exasperating, once in a while, the group’s hatchet jobs are actually rather amusing — in an unintentional sort of way.

Yesterday, Crossroads released a memo accusing the Obama White House with prioritizing politics over economic policy, and allowing political strategists to replace economists.

President Obama has no real economic team. And that’s why his economic agenda is a political agenda, propped up by political slogans (“Pass this bill! We can’t wait!”) and promoted by political means (taxpayer-financed political rallies and DNC-financed TV ads). The entire structure and focus of the Obama White House are centered on reelection, not recovery.

Need evidence? Where is the current head of Obama’s council of economic advisors? The head of Obama’s National Economic Council? Can most Washington reporters even name them? … Instead, this Administration’s “economic team” is David Axelrod and David Plouffe and Jay Carney, because all they want to do — all they can do — is politics.

Even for American Crossroads, this is deeply stupid.

Cuba to free 2,900 prisoners ahead of visit by Pope Benedict XVI
    December 23, 2011 21:40

Cuba will release 2,900 prisoners ahead of a visit next spring by Pope Benedict XVI, the Cuban government reportedly said Friday, citing humanitarian reasons. President Raul Castro called the move was a goodwill gesture prompted by appeals from relatives of the prisoners — many of them unwell, women or elderly — and religious institutions, the BBC reported.

Anyone convicted of a serious crime like murder, espionage or drug trafficking were also not part of the amnesty. However, those convicted of political crimes — viewed by Havana as “crimes against state security” will be, The Guardian reported, citing the news agency Prensa Latina. “All of them have completed an important portion of their sentence and shown good behavior,” Prensa Latina reportedly wrote.

Barack Obama Quote O’ The Day

Each year we’ve come together to celebrate a story that has endured for two millennia. It’s a story that’s dear to Michelle and me as Christians, but it’s a message that’s universal: A child was born far from home to spread a simple message of love and redemption to every human being around the world.

It’s a message that says no matter who we are or where we are from, no matter the pain we endure or the wrongs we face, we are called to love one another as brothers and as sisters.

Lobbyists Plan Holiday Travel to Early Primary States
    By Kate Ackley and Janie Lorber| Dec. 22, 2011, 7:30 a.m.

While most of political Washington is eager to get out of town for the holidays, a group of die-hard Republican lobbyists will use their recess for something decidedly not relaxing: volunteering in the early caucus and primary states for their favorite presidential campaigns. Whether they’re holding signs, knocking on doors, observing polls or making local media appearances, rewards abound for these lobbyists.

Some are angling for jobs in a future administration, while others hope renewing old ties and making fresh connections with campaign aides will boost their future K Street business. For others, the thrill of the trail is enough. There’s a whole bunch of folks going up from K Street,” said Brad Card, a lobbyist at Dutko Grayling and longtime Mitt Romney devotee.

48 States Have Elected Openly LGBT Lawmakers |
By Igor Volsky on Dec 23, 2011 at 2:45 pm

Denis Dison notes that “last week’s news that Southhaven, Miss., Mayor Greg Davis informed a local newspaper that he is gay means just two U.S. states remain on the list of those with no openly LGBT elected officials — Alaska and South Dakota.” “That doesn’t mean these states aren’t served by LGBT elected officials, just that none have self-identified publicly either in speeches or in the media,” he says.

The GOP Makes America Pay For Their Dysfunction and Inability To Govern
    By: Rmuse| December 24, 2011

The public will not forget how Republicans nearly cost them their payroll tax cut by holding out for more unrelated concessions than they secured. This is not to say John Boehner cares about the American people, because he does not. What Boehner cares about is the wealthy and the false perception that Republicans are protecting the wealthy to benefit the American people. Eric Cantor and House tea party Republicans do not care about the people either, and were willing to let the cuts expire to prove a point that they are not to be trifled with where protecting the wealthy is concerned regardless of the political consequences. It is so tragic that one political party is so intent on helping the wealthy that they are willing to let their different approaches cause rifts in the party in plain sight of the American people. The good news is that the public now understands that regardless the tactics, Republicans are not on their side.

  82. December 24, 2011 at 1:44 pm

Wowzers, not bad for a holiday season:

(Reuters) – President Barack Obama’s campaign set a goal of raising $60 million in the fourth quarter of the year to benefit the Democratic incumbent’s re-election and the Democratic National Committee, a campaign official said on Saturday.

Obama’s campaign, together with the Democratic National Committee, had raised roughly $155 million through the end of September.

If it reaches its goal for the fourth quarter, the campaign will surpass $200 million in fundraising for 2011.

The campaign raised $86 million in the 2nd quarter and $70 million in the 3rd the quarter, even with the cancellations due to the fake GOP debt crisis.

    • December 24, 2011 at 2:28 pm

I was just wondering about this. Campaign usually exceeds the goals they make public as well, but given Pres Obama will not fundraise the rest of the year himself I wondered how the Q4 numbers will look.

$200M heading into the election year does make the ridiculous $1B campaign far out of reach though as there is no way he’d average $200M a quarter in 2012. Unless that $1B number was taking into account third party money – to Priorities USA and the like.

Regardless being the sitting President means he needs to spend much less on advertising etc – as everybody knows who he is and has a pretty set opinion on him. So the vast bulk of his fundraising will go to the ground level organizing and targeting and getting out his vote.

      • December 24, 2011 at 2:41 pm

I feel sure that the financial analysts at the Chicago headquarters have worked everything out. If $60 mil is their goal this qtr., then they are seeing a path to raising all that they need. I do think that fundraising will pick up dramatically once the campaign season starts and they’ve probably worked out precisely what pace they have to set. The president does not have to spend money on primaries, so in essence everything he gets is for the general and for keeping the ground game building.

    • December 24, 2011 at 3:12 pm

It must be all small donations. He has nit done that many fundraisers!

    GOP disaster laid bear:

MINDMELD from senior Democratic aide: “There is no point in rubbing it in. No aide can say anything that the Wall Street Journal, Karl Rove, or Senate Republicans haven’t already said about what an unmitigated disaster House Republicans’ strategy has proven to be. I don’t think there is a sober Republican who doubts that this week set them back significantly for 2012.”
–Another senior Hill Dem.: “From Rove to Krauthammer to the Journal editorial board, the Republican establishment hasn’t been this freaked about a House speaker hurting their chances in 2012 since Newt Gingrich was leading the polls in Iowa.

Here I am on Christmas Eve sneaking a quick look at the TOD blog. Two of my adult kids are here (one with fiance) to spend the holidays with me. They have taken a drive to the beach which is a half hour away while I fix the Xmas Eve meal for eleven so I have to be off here and onto my preparations. I have it prepared ahead as much as possible so didn’t need their help putting it together.

I’m blessed to have most of my family with me this Xmas. I had the others at Thanksgiving. I am also blessed to have found this blog after being on the OFA blog during the campaign and for awhile afterwards till I found the safe haven of BWD then here. Thanks Chips and bloggers for your positive stories, informing us, and engaging us in being proactive. May you all experience a blessed Christmas and a time to be with family.

Maybe next year we will be together for Christmas….meanwhile, I find solace and good company here with you all!

You’re right. A man this low is beyond contempt and beyond words. Does the Republican Party have no depths to which it won’t sink? To even contemplate this idiot for president is a travesty. And you can bet if Romney thinks it will win him points he’ll be right behind Newt, no matter what he said in 2008.

      Here’s a comment I got from POU, from Guns300 ….

Lets just take slavery and racism out of it for second. Someone please explain to me. If you fight war and win how in the world does someone make an argument about flying the loser’s flag over the winner’s government buildings? A war was fought you lost as far as I’m concerned that flag should be illegal to be flown anywhere.

Facts and logic…. Whew.!! Lost on ol’ Leroy Gingrich and more than a few South Carolinians..

      • 333 nathkatun7
        December 25, 2011 at 4:28 am

Isonprize, the question as to who actually won the Civil War has bothered me for quite some time. But, for me, the more important question is: what was the Civil War all about? If the Civil War was about ending slavery, and by extension the ideological justification for slavery which was racism, then flying the Confederate flag, which stood for the defense of a race based slavery institution would absolutely be out of the question. On the other hand, if you take slavery and racism out of the discussion, then it is not that difficult for Southerners to justify flying a Confederate flag on the grounds that it is represents Southern culture. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that the only logical way to attack the Confederate flag is to associate it with the Southern defense of human bondage based on the racist doctrine of black inferiority and white superiority.

Attacking the Confederate flag on the grounds that the North (representing the idea of the Union) won may be logical but it’s not that compelling. After all, going back to ancient history, there are examples where the conquerer allowed the conquered to retain their cultural identity. A good example is ancient Egypt where the King (Pharaoh) wore the “Double Crown” representing the kingdoms of upper Egypt (conquerer) and lower Egypt (conquered). Basically, my view is that the Confederate flag is not just a symbol of a unique Southern culture. Rather, it’s a symbol of a culture based on racial slavery. The South did not secede simply because it wanted to maintain a unique Southern culture. The South seceded because it wanted to maintain a race based slavery. Insisting on flying a Confederate flag means that you want to perpetuate a symbol of a war fought to maintain a culture that was based on race based slavery. That is why you can not “take slavery and racism out of” the discussion of the Confederate flag.

I actually threw my head back and laughed for a full minute over this one. This guy was SPEAKER of the House, and he didn’t know that? And now he wants to sign laws into being, as President of the United States? Sign treaties that govern interactions between countries. Rule over 300 million people. But, he couldn’t even get his act together to get 10,000 legitimate signatures and finally tops it off by suggesting illegal actions, on his behalf? You can’t make this stuff up. You just can’t. It would be entertaining, if the stakes weren’t so high.

This is exactly what I’ve been thinking. I wonder if he’s just trying to up his earning potential. Some of the things he says are just too outrageous for me to believe he really is courting presidential candidate votes. I almost feel like he’s laughing at the electorate while thinking ‘I can say what I want during this campaign ’cause I don’t give a kick about your reactions. Who wants to do the work of the WH when I can give a speech or two and be paid a monstrous sum.’ A serious contender would couch all his answers in a more appropriate tone.

Re: the Virginia GOP primary — I think it’s obvious why only Willard and nutty Ron are eligible: the rest of them aren’t running serious campaigns — they’re running book tours or just showing up at debates. Willard has been running for president since forever, so of course all his homework is gonna be in. A month ago, I saw a Paulite asking for signatures in front of a grocery store here. Of course I didn’t sign for that nutjob to get on the ballot, but at least they were doing the legwork. Leroy, Uncle Herman, Crazy Eyes Bachmann, Sanitorium, Oops Perry — they’re all grifting or are simply incompetent.

I’m glad it’s happening here in VA. Maybe it will depress GOPers in the state enuf that their feelings will be too hurt to vote in November. 😆

Even millionaire Republican presidential candidates like Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich seem to sense something is amiss in the American economic structure, as evidenced by their recent Kinsley gaffes, which acknowledged that the super rich aren’t always the magnificent benefactors or “job creators” the GOP tries to pawn them off as. Yeah, I’m talking about you, Mitt Romney.

FILE – In this Dec. 24, 2010 file image provided by noradsanta.org, the official NORAD tracking of Santa Claus is shown on a satellite map of the world. NORAD Tracks Santa, the official name of the exercise, began in 1955 when a Colorado Springs newspaper ad invited kids to talk to Santa on a hotline. The phone number had a typo, and dozens of kids wound up dialing the Continental Aerospace Defense Command in Colorado Springs, the predecessor to NORAD. Volunteer Santa-trackers at NORAD are bracing for tens of thousands of calls and emails on Christmas Eve this year.

    To Chips and TODers,

I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to those celebrating in some other way.

I give thanks to this haven Chips has provided for us and to all my fellow TODers for their diligence in seeking out the truth that our corporate media refuses to bring to light.

    Very sweet photo!!!!

In Hawaii, First Lady helps hi-tech Santa tracking operation…
While President Obama hit the links in Hawaii on Christmas Eve, First Lady Michelle Obama took calls from kids across the US who were looking for Santa Claus with the NORAD Tracks Santa program. Above, in a White House photo, Mrs. Obama reacts while talking on the phone; she answered the kids’ calls from Kailua, where the First Family is staying in a beachfront rental. The holiday program is run by the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

So grateful for our POTUS and FLOTUS!!

Happy Holidays Chips and my fellow TOD Peeps!

I truly hope everyone’s holiday is filled with laughter, good food, holiday libations and loved ones. I am thankful for whatever divine forces in the universe led me to this site just a few short months ago. I’ve learned SO MUCH here; as well as laughed, gotten teary eyed, fired up, inspired and even put my naughty mat to good use! 😆 Chips thanks for your tireless efforts in creating this oasis, where we too can recharge our batteries and then set back out to fight the good fight for our illustrious Prez, his family and his administration.

To our troops returning from Iraq (including my goddaughter who is now home safe and sound!!), WELCOME HOME! Peace and blessings y’all…

    So this is Christmas
    And what have you done
    Another year over
And a new one just begun
    And so this is Christmas
    I hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones
    The old and the young

    A very merry Christmas
    And a happy New Year
    Let’s hope it’s a good one
    Without any fear

    And so this is Christmas
    For weak and for strong
For rich and the poor ones
    The world is so wrong
    And so Happy Christmas
    For black and for white
    For yellow and red ones
    Let’s stop all the fight

War is Over …..if you want it.

I thank you, Chips, for your tremendous input and loyalty to the cause of sanity in keeping us informed, engaged, and simply charmed by what we would not get from msm……..the true representation of who our President really is. You serve us and him very well. Bless you 😀

In the L.A. Times the writer said “The Christmas Story” is a true depiction of Christmas and ranks right up there with “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “Miracle on 34th Street” and I agree. My other favorite christmas movie is the one with Linda Hamilton, Home by Christmas” on Lifetime Network.

Merry Christmas Eve everyone. I played hooky all day. Shopped for food, crocheted presents, and just been lazy.
I missed you all and have had a great time catching up.

Many thanks to Chips for her tireless efforts to keep us informed and help us stay strong.

Went to CBS and found this headline which made me smile.

Combat troops out of Iraq back at Fort Hood

    Promise kept

Finally sitting down and what’s the first thing I do? Why, I check The Obama Diary for the latest updates on my President and his family.

Merry Christmas, TODDERS and to you, Chips, for all your work here. This site is such a joy and I love tweeting with everyone. Hope our First Family has a restless vacation and a Blessed Christmas.

And, I hope Santa is as good to y’all as you’ve all been this year.

Merry Christmas everyone. I hope you all have a great Christmas. I think it is so funny that some of these repug candidates can’t get on some state ballots. Especially considering they were/are trying to keep President Obama off some state ballots. I mean I just have to laugh. This proves that God is watching and does take care of the evil doers. I am very confidant that President Obama will serve another 4 years and it will be greater than any of us can imagine.

Anywhoooo…I’m going to get in on the Chips love – this is a great website and your spirit and humor is what makes it so special. An Iowa Christian conservative leader who bestowed his highly sought-after endorsement on presidential candidate Rick Santorum this week is now at the center of a controversy over whether he asked for cash in exchange for his public support.

Less than 48-hours after receiving the backing of Bob Vander Plaats, the head of the prominent evangelical group The Family Leader, Santorum disclosed that the prominent Iowan told him he needed money to make the most out of the endorsement.

And sources familiar with talks between the conservative heavyweight and representatives from several of the Republican presidential campaigns went a step further, describing Vander Plaats’ tactics as corrupt.

“Clearly the endorsement was for sale — without a doubt,” one source said.

When will america fights its second freedom fight against these evangelical corrupt fascists ?

    • December 24, 2011 at 11:12 pm

At least this is one good thing Santorum has done. I wonder if he offered to endorse the others for cash, but Santorum was the only one who went public. He’s horrendous and vile in every way, and his views sow hatred and value ignorance, but I have to give credit to Santorum for coming clean on this.

In November Ginrich and the others were warned about the possibility they may not it on the ballot. There is no excuse for their negligence and failure:

Could GOP Presidential Candidates Fail to Meet Ballot Requirements in Virginia?

    By MARK BENJAMIN | November 15, 2011

“Some of the smaller campaigns, they need to be organized,” says a Virginia GOP official who is directly involved in overseeing the primary process there. “We have been trying to send the word out to these guys. There are legions of chances to screw this up.”

When asked if some candidates might not make it on the ballot March 6, the official acknowledges, “Yeah. It is very much a possibility.”

There’s a flurry of reports in the blogosphere today on whether first dog Bo was flown back from Hawaii to the nation’s capital for a photo op after President Barack Obama and Bo appeared Wednesday at a store in Alexandria, Va.

Scott Miscovich, who lives down the street from the Obama vacation rental home on Kailuana Place told the Star-Advertiser Sunday, “My wife saw Michelle and the kids passing by and we’ve seen Bo (the Obamas’ dog) walking.”

A White House spokesman told the Star-Advertiser that Bo did not travel to Hawaii with the first lady and daughters Malia and Sasha.

Stay classy, Red State, stay classy!
