lies, lies, lies (updated with nyt correction)

NYT

From today’s speech:

White House

****

Update:

Good, a correction. But seriously, why was the ‘mistake’ made in the first place? Did they actually listen to the speech? 🙄

I just left this in the comments section – I doubt they’ll publish it. Perhaps if more of us do this, they’ll have to.

“How lazy are you? He mentioned Palestine/Palestinians THREE TIMES: text of speech:
    http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2011/12/16/remarks-president-71st-general-assembly-union-reform-judaism

” And that’s why, as President, I have never wavered in pursuit of a just and lasting peace — two states for two peoples; an independent PALESTINE alongside a secure Jewish State of Israel. (Applause.) I have not wavered and will not waver. That is our shared vision. (Applause.)

Now, I know that many of you share my frustration sometimes, in terms of the state of the peace process. There’s so much work to do. But here’s what I know –- there’s no question about how lasting peace will be achieved. Peace can’t be imposed from the outside. Ultimately, it is the Israelis and the PALESTINIANS who must reach agreement on the issues that divide them. (Applause.)

And the fact that peace is hard can’t deter us from trying. Because now more than ever, it’s clear that a just and lasting peace is in the long-term interests of Israel. It is in the long-term interests of the PALESTINIAN people. It is in the interest of the region. It is the interest of the United States, and it is in the interest of the world. And I am not going to stop in pursuit of that vision. It is the right thing to do. (Applause.)

I demand you not only print a CORRECTION, but an APOLOGY.”

2 possibilities- is because the Ny Times did not watch the speech or they had their story written before the speech.

Either way it’s DAMN unethical. You don’t publish a report written before an actual speech, if the report is not corroborated by the facts of the speech. And you don’t write about a speech that you haven’t even read!!!

Here is another point of view, Also on Hardball Chuck just had a gentleman in Israel on that said President Obama’s polls in Israel is at 53%-54% It’s a long article but worth the read.

    The “pro-Israel” right loses it

by MJ Rosenberg, Foreign Policy Matters

It has been over a week since the lobby that deems itself “pro-Israel” began its recent effort to suppress the views of those of us it considers Israel-haters, self-hating Jews, or — in a most ridiculous twist given that most of us are Jews — “anti-
    Semites.”

The effort to silence us now stems from (1) the determination to defeat President Obama, and (2) the need to intimidate us as the lobby and its congressional acolytes cowboy up for a bombing campaign against Iran.

I am one of the least significant figures to come under attack.

The bill of particulars against me is that I use the term “Israel firster” to describe those who consistently thwart the efforts of U.S. presidents to achieve Middle East peace. Their goals are those of the Israeli right: to maintain the occupation and prevent diplomacy with Iran.

These people (take a look at Jennifer Rubin in the Washington Post) think nothing of attacking the President of the United States in the most vicious of terms but condemn anyone with the temerity to criticize anything done by the prime minister of Israel.

As I have explained, it is not Israel they put first, but rather the Israeli right. (They had no objection to criticism of Yitzhak Rabin, whose pursuit of peace with the Palestinians led to him being portrayed as an enemy of Israel by many, including Israel’s current prime minister.)

After a week attacking me, they have turned their guns to bigger prey: New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman. Friedman is under attack for writing a column denouncing Israel’s foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, who praised the recent Russian election as “absolutely fair, free and democratic,” and lamenting a host of anti-democratic actions in Israel (all of which have been roundly condemned inside the country).

U.S. Signs Over Last Military Base In Iraq |
By Eli Clifton on Dec 16, 2011 at 4:00 pm

U.S. and Iraqi officials signed paperwork handing over Camp Adder, the last American military base in Iraq. The sign over marks one of the final acts in the U.S. departure from Iraq. Four-thousand remaining American soldiers are expected to leave before December 31. The U.S. also handed over Ali Mussa Daqduq — its last detainee, suspected of being responsible for killing five U.S. military personnel — to Iraqi authorities after a failed attempt to negotiate his extradition to the U.S.

Contradicting Romney’s Account, Fellow Missionaries Say Candidate Lived In A ‘Palace’ On Mission
By Alex Seitz-Wald on Dec 16, 2011 at 2:30 pm

Seeking to show Americans that he can understand their troubles, multimillionaire GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney has been harping on the supposedly hardscrabble 30 months he spent in France as a Mormon missionary. Romney said he lived in apartments that were so rundown that he was forced to defecate in a bucket and shower with a hose. “Most of the apartments I lived in had no refrigerators,” Romney said last week at a town hall New Hampshire. “I don’t actually recall any of them having a refrigerator.”

But according to fellow American missionaries who spoke with the U.K.’s Daily Telegraph, Romney not only had a refrigerator and toilet, but a lot more. The missionaries said Romney spent most of his time in France in a Paris mansion that some described as a “palace.” It featured a cook, a servant, stained glass windows and expensive art, and later became an embassy.

House GOP Voted 191 Times Against The Planet, Earning ‘Worst Environmental Record Of Any Congress’
By Tanya Somanader posted from ThinkProgress Green on Dec 15, 2011 at 7:30 pm

House Republicans waged systematic war against the environment this year, attacking environmental protection through climate denial, oil drilling, weakening public lands and water protection, and obstructing responsible regulation — just to name a few. In summation, a House Committee on Energy and Commerce minority report reveals that the House voted 191 times to undermine the protection of the environment, thus “amassing the worst environmental record of any Congress in history.” Out of the 770 legislative roll call votes taken in the House this year, “more than one out of every five” were votes against the environment.

I suppose this is what their new slogan “Leaning Forward” refers to…

Why Did MSNBC Apologize to Mitt Romney?
    Paul Waldman
    December 15, 2011

So MSNBC picked up Aravosis’s post and did a brief story on it. Among other things, the story included a chyron that perhaps went a bit far, reading, “Romney’s KKK slogan?” What happened next is what’s interesting. The Romney campaign complained, and MSNBC began to grovel profusely. Chris Matthews read an apology on the air (even though he wasn’t the one who did the initial report), saying the network “reported on a blog item that compared a phrase used by the Romney campaign to one used by the KKK way back in the 1920s. It was irresponsible and incendiary of us to do this, and it showed an appalling lack of judgment. We apologize, we really do, to the Romney campaign.”

What’s odd about this is that MSNBC didn’t say anything that was false, and the fact that Mitt Romney’s xenophobic slogan was previously used by not only the KKK but also other groups like the Know-Nothings is obviously interesting and newsworthy. So it’s unclear exactly what MSNBC was apologizing for, although their statement seems to suggest that they now believe that when they heard that Mitt Romney was using an old KKK slogan, they should have just not said anything about it. That’s some courageous media for you right there.

    ~snip~

Like I’ve said, the fix is in. MSNBC expects Romney to be the nominee, so they dont’ wanna lose “access” to the Romney campaign. I saw this apology and even I was wondering what the hell they were apologizing for.

There’s No Such Thing as an “Indefinite Detention Bill” and Other Pro Left Lies

(Stay to the end, and watch me expose Glenn Greenwald as a liar once again.) One of the most galling things about the professional left is the number of times they lie to make a point. You can’t be a progressive and also lie to the people who read your stuff. As this blog notes time and time again, the truth has a liberal bias; Fox News needs to lie; we do not. Case in point; the hysteria over what many pro and emo lefties refer to as the “Indefinite Detention Bill.” Even people I often admire are buying into the hysteria, and it’s become depressing.

First thing you should know is, there is NO SUCH THING as an “Indefinite Detention Bill.” The actual bill Obama first threatened to veto and has now agreed to sign is called the “National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2012.” The part about the “indefinite detention” is actually a poison pill amendment Republicans inserted into the bill to portray any Democrat who votes against it or President Obama if he vetoes it as being “against our troops.” Republicans put it there, not Democrats or Obama.

Yet, who the hell do these supposed “liberals” go after? Not the Republicans who put that crap into the bill in the first place, of course. They go after the Democrats and President Obama, who have to fund the military (which includes my son, who’s working hard trying to rebuild Afghanistan, by the way) and have little choice but to put up with such Amendments. How incredibly stupid is this? Did so many progressive really learn NOTHING from the 2010 elections?

A Progressive Mission Statement: Positive Goals to Move Progressives Forward
    Written by: Milt Shook

What follows is a list of positive goals that progressive politics should be about, in my view. You can disagree with them, or even add to them, but if you expect to add any, make sure they’re positive and goal-oriented, not just policy wishes. This is not a list of issues and policies; it’s a list of generalized goals that most voters can go along with, and which will solve most of our greatest societal problems.

We should all be less concerned about every little detail about how we get to where we need to go, and more concerned that we simply get there. In my humble opinion, if we stated these as our goals for our country, most average voters would be on our side, and we would be able to drown out the negative naysayers on the right.

    Wouldn’t that be nice?
