Buoyant economic data boosts U.S. stocks
    By Agence France-Presse
    Thursday, December 15, 2011

Positive data on the US jobs market, industrial activity and trade gave a boost to US stocks Thursday, but eurozone clouds continued to hover over the markets. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 45.33 points (0.38 percent) to finish at 11,868.81. The broader S&P 500 rose 3.93 points (0.32 percent) to 1,215.75, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite edged up 1.70 points (0.07 percent) to 2,541.01.

Sentiment got a bump from the report that new jobless claims hit a three-year low last week, suggesting layoffs are slowing down and US businesses are feeling more confident. New data also showed that the deficit of the US current account, a broad measure of trade, fell to its lowest level in almost two years, and there were buoyant readings on the pace of manufacturing in the Philadelphia and New York regions.

Exports from LA port are way up. With emphasis on increasing exports, Made in USA, makes OWS protests to shut down ports very suspicious. Anticapitalist anarchists who will hurt the people they’re supposedly fighting for.

      • December 15, 2011 at 8:19 pm

I wish the OWS people got the clue that capitalism, in its broad sense, isn’t going anywhere. It just, once more, has to be saved from its own excesses. They just thought that 2008 would lead to a wholesale overturning of the system. That wasn’t going to happen; we’re going to have years ahead of slow reform.

  8. December 15, 2011 at 7:55 pm

I was wondering when this would happen. I assumed she would have been filmed receiving it and thus it would have been scheduled.

About the contest Donna won, I was surprised some frontpager at DKoch wouldn’t have won the contest just so they could criticize the President on the phone call.

I know why—-Repubs are fearful they are losing their iron grip on the military. (votes) They see those cheering troops for President Obama. They see all the good work Michelle and Jill have done with military families. That’s another thing I love about President Obama and his administration. They have not surrendered any quarter. They have dared to tread where previous Dem presidents/administrations have not.

    • December 15, 2011 at 9:41 pm

Tucker is so far in over his head he hasn’t seen daylight in years. If he thinks it’s a winning idea to alienate the US fighting forces that risk and give their lives for their country then he needs to crawl back in his cave. Tucker himself never took off his bowtie long enough to get his hands dirty in his life and the biggest risk he takes is when he shaves.

Me either. Not hardly the same thing, but Oprah called me one Saturday night when we had friends over before we were all going out for din. I was so taken off guard. I mean I was never expecting to hear, “This is Oprah”. I think I became immediately dumb as a door knob, tried to sound normal and have a little fun conversation, but everyone was listening because they heard me say, “OPRAH??? Is this really OPRAH?” It was all awkward and uncomfortable. And then they all made fun of me later because I said, “Oh sorry, I have to go. We have a reservation.” They said I blew it. I could have been her new best friend, move over Gayle, there’s a new girl in town. I could have my own show now, hanging out and vacationing with Oprah. But no, I said I had to go because I had a dumb din reservation. So anyhoo, I can just imagine what I’d be like if I heard, “Hi, this is President Obama.” I would be so like that Chips flat on his back guy.

      • December 15, 2011 at 8:25 pm

        • 132 dotster3
          December 15, 2011 at 8:43 pm

I had sent an email to her show. It’s hard to remember all the details. This was during the W years and the run-up to the Iraq War. I think I was criticizing some pro-war guest who was not being truthful about the reasons for war. I think I was making suggestions about other guests I would like to see who would be able to shed a more honest light on what was going on. I do remember she said she was sitting home in her pjs, reading her emails, and it was her chef’s night off, that she was going to make pasta for she and Steadman for din in a little bit. I don’t remember much else about the phone conversation, too much in a dither. I do not think I was overly impressive. šŸ™‚ But I did get a call a few months later to ask me to come to her show when Bill O’Reilly was going to be there hawking some dumb book of his. They asked me to commit to standing and asking a question. I was way too nervous to do that on national TV, and I didn’t want to have to drum up the courage for a show with dumb BillO, so I declined. And that was the end of my Oprah BFF saga.

          • December 15, 2011 at 8:51 pm

Ah Dotster, great story, she was obviously hugely impressed by your email to call you like that. And much as I’d love to mash O’Reilly on national TV – or anywhere – I’d be just like you: there seriously is not enough money in this world to ever entice me on to TV! Thanks Dotster, your description of your reaction to the call completely cracked me up!

    HA! HA! HA! Heehee.

Mark Meckler, co-founder of the Tea Party Patriots and one of the most prominent spokesmen for the grassroots movement, was arrested at LaGuardia Airport on Thursday after trying to check in a handgun on his flight.

According to the Queens District Attorney’s office, Meckler arrived at the airport with the gun, a Glock 27, and ammunition locked in a safe and presented it to the flight attendant at the Delta counter. He allegedly told authorities that he needed the gun for protection after receiving threats, but did not have a New York State license to carry the weapon. He’s being charged with second degree possession of an illegal weapon, a charge that carries a penalty of up to 15 years in prison.

Story here: Tea Party Leader Mark Meckler Arrested With Handgun At Airport.

    • 153 majii
      December 15, 2011 at 8:56 pm

Meckler is a prime example of a TPer who thinks he doesn’t have to follow the rules. I would have thought that being a lawyer, he’d look up the gun laws in states he’d be traveling to/through. I guess he thought the new NRA law the GOP wants to push through Congress which would allow gun owners the right to carry guns to/from all 50 states had already been passed! I am soooo glad he was arrested in NY where there are stricter gun laws, and I love the fact that he could receive 15 years in prison for violating NY’s gun control law. I live in GA, and I’m sick, sick, sick, of these so-called Christian gun worshipers.

      • December 15, 2011 at 9:49 pm

Agree, Majii, it’s the height of either arrogance or stupidity not to check the gun laws, as if the Delta people would bow down before him because of his so-called political clout. He won’t get 15 years, but I hope he gets a very good scare and has to do community service among people the Tea Parties love to dismiss.

Dec 15 (Reuters) – A deal has been reached among congressional negotiators to fund U.S. government agencies through Sept. 30, 2012, Democratic Senator Daniel Inouye said on Thursday.

Meanwhile, negotiators on a payroll tax cut and jobless benefit extension bill are still trying to reach a deal on a year-long measure. But as a fallback, they also are considering a two-month extension, according to a Senate Democratic aide.

“I hope we don’t get there. But if we do, what the two-month extension accomplishes is – make sure that people continue to get the payroll tax holiday, also unemployment benefits and also that doctors will be able to continue their work on Medicare patients,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told reporters.

I believe he is trying to do the right thing for the people. For this country. He cares about the people. He don’t want to see anyone suffer. I voted for President Obama because I believe he would fight for us, he does care about the middle class and poor, not that he hate the rich, but he want to see all have chance at the American dream. When the economy is in the shape it is in, when so many people are struggling, what is the President to do?

The 2-month deal is the “last resort” measure, but it appears that Democrats are trying to negotiate a year-long measure.

    • December 15, 2011 at 9:16 pm

I think the Republicans are going to regret having this come up right before the elections – it’s going to bring to light their obstruction, right when they’re trying their hardest to hoodwink the public. And the President is unlikely to make a deal on extending the Bush tax cuts right before the election. I think this is a dumb move for the GOP. But, that’s par for the course.

    Ha Chips!!!

So today I decided to take a half day off from work to finish my Christmas shopping. My cousin who is a shopaholic told me about a newer Mall near Baltimore that had a specialty store that I needed to make a purchase from. So I leave work and swing by and pick her up and we head out to the Mall. Otherwise I would have been in the comfortable setting of my office when my phone rang at 5:04 EST. I almost didn’t answer because I wasn’t familiar with the number but thought it was one of my sons calling from work since it was a DC exchange. Now I was at the cash register when my phone rang and I answered it intending to tell whichever son this was that I would call them right back because I was at the checkout in the Mall. So I answer and a male voice asks if this is Donna S…….. and I respond hesitantly yes. He immediately says the most magical words that I have heard in my life. He says; hold for President Obama and within a second I hear. Hello Donna! Congratulations you were the winner of the grassroots fundraising challenge!!!

Now I drop the bags I had in my hand and said OMG its President Obama. My cousin looks at me as if I have lost my mind and the cashier’s face is scrunched up looking at me as if to say, what happened? I whisper to my cousin that it’s the real President Obama on my phone. The cashier goes crazy and all the cashiers rush over and my cousin is telling me that it can’t be. So I asked him to tell her it’s really him. Once she hears his voice she drops her bags and screams OMG it’s the President. I’m laughing hysterically at this point. Y’all had to be there to see that scene in that store.

I get the phone back from my cousin and he says; now you tell Jackie (my cousin) she can’t be hijacking your phone call. He said you know Donna I get this all the time. People never believe its me calling. I just don’t understand it. His sense of humor is off the chart. šŸ™‚

He thanks me for winning the grassroots challenge. He says he is grateful for all the work being done on his behalf. I thank him. I tell him how much I admire and appreciate all that he is doing for our country and that there are so many of us that ā€œhas his backā€. Then I told him about The Obama Diary and this wonderful space that our Chips has provided us to support him on a daily basis. I asked him to stop by someday. He said to tell you all that he is grateful for the support and that he loves you back and then he wished us all a Merry Christmas. I in turn wished him and his Family a Merry Christmas from both the OFA and TOD bloggers and then he was gone.

So I didn’t get a chance to ask a question. It just all happened so fast and without warning but somehow I feel totally satisfied. It was a magnificent Christmas present.

Thank you TOD for helping to make this possible!!!

Oh blimey, you had me laughing and weeping the whole way through your completely wonderful report! I’m picturing you at the cash register when you heard “hold for President Obama”…… once again:

And your cousin and the cashiers……. it’s just the funniest, sweetest thing I’ve ever read.

And he sounds such a dote, as we expected.

Aw Donna, I am SO completely thrilled for you, and SO grateful for this completely charming account of what happened.

You know, I think I need a lie down now!

        JOB Its ridiculous!!
My poor cousin didn’t know about the challenge I had won so she just couldn’t comprehend why President Obama would be calling me and when I finally explained to her why I received the phone call she told me she needed to go sit down because her legs felt wobbly. So we went and found a seat and just sat there in the middle of the Mall watching people walk by with a big ole smile on our faces. It’ll be a looooonnng time before my feet touch the ground.

His voice is so genuine and friendly.

    Good evening TODville
Poor Ed Schultz he gets so confused. Even after Nancy Peloise explained this is not a cave in. He does not get it about the tax cuts. He is so apt to criticize the President.

    • 275 hopefruit2
      December 15, 2011 at 8:41 pm

Some of our friends on Twitter are not liking Nancy’s responses at all. They think she’s covering up for weak Democrats.

      • December 15, 2011 at 8:51 pm

Yep, I said same on Twitter. She’s covering up.

      • 277 jacquelineoboomer
        December 15, 2011 at 8:53 pm

That’s bull. I heard her, and I’m in with everything she said. She also referred a couple of times to the President’s Kansas speech, where he talked about what is best for ALL AMERICANS not because of which political party they are in …

and as she mentioned all of us would be proud to see how President Obama acts in real life (I think Donna Dem would agree – love it!), Nancy said: “He is, in a values-based way, for middle-income families – every step of the way.”

Good enough for me, and the naysayers on Twitter and at other places online or on the teevee can KMA.

        • 278 jacquelineoboomer
          December 15, 2011 at 8:55 pm

By the way, I’m not calling out anyone here who thinks there are weak Democrats – that is always a topic worth discussing. I’m calling out people everywhere who never give a break to President Obama or Speaker-for-Life Pelosi.

      • December 15, 2011 at 9:05 pm

Geez, do we want Dems to stick together or not? People should understand by now that Pelosi is a team player. She doesn’t go on TV and drag Democrats through the mud like some others.

        • 281 mb32
          December 15, 2011 at 9:34 pm

I loved the fact that when Ed tried to say PBO was a poor negotiator she pushed back and said that she’s sat at the table with him; she really praised PBO. That’s what I love about her, even when she hasn’t agreed with PBO, you never heard her be anything but loyal. The rest of the Dems could learn a thing a two from her. People used to say that she and PBO had a strained relationship but I think its one of the strongest relationships that PBO has with anyone on the Hill.

          • December 15, 2011 at 10:02 pm

Leader Nancy did not allow Ed to push her around or POB. She was precise, very polite, and on targe with her comments. She does not have to bow to anyone, and she sure as heck did not bow to Ed or anyone else tonight. Ed tried to take here in another direction, but she stayed focus and she spoke with convictions and with a core of truth for what she stands for.

Ed was out of his league tonight. I am proud of Leader Pelosi and love her for standing firm for President Obama all the way. HZ

      December 15, 2011 at 9:05 pm

Well, relellit, there are always some people who would rather walk away with nothing just so they can say that they stood by their principles. These types of people lack empathy for the dire situations millions of Americans are having to deal with, and imo, they are in the same category as many on the Right.

      • 284 Pamela
        December 15, 2011 at 10:22 pm

Right, majii, and these same should NOT be up there representing us! They should get the heck out of politics (except it is so lucrative, yes?)

      • 285 nathkatun7
        December 16, 2011 at 1:15 am

I think many of them are plainly selfish. People like Ed Shultz, Michael Moore, Arianna Huffy, and Brazilian Greenwald belong to the 1%. They are willing to stand on principle because they lead lives of luxury. I am sure Glenn Greenwald is heading to Brazil during winter. Unlike the unemployed people he doesn’t worry about how to pay for his mortgage/rent, or pay for his food and home heating oil.

The President and Speaker Pelosi have to worry about millions of people who are about to loose their unemployment insurance. The President and Speaker Pelosi worry about middle income earners who may loose the tax cuts at the time when they are struggling to stay above water. You are absolutely right, majii. These holier than thou progressives “are in the same category as many on the right.” To them, the immediate needs of the people are not that important. What matters to them is stupid ideological purity that rejects all compromises. Something that has never happened in over two hundred and twenty four years of American history, beginning with the drafting of the U.S. Constitution which was so full of all sorts of compromises that took centuries to rectify.

    • December 15, 2011 at 9:10 pm

It’s a cover up. I can appreciate what she did. Shes a team player. I think that if they do this 2 month stuff I believe they just want to go home for the holiday. This is a joke. I just assume they do nothing and argue that nothing is getting done because of the Repubs.

      • 288 elo4obama/biden
        December 15, 2011 at 9:27 pm

I read somewhere HERE that they are still working on a 1 year extension, but will take a 2 month one if need be. I’d take that as a sign of a work in progress cause at this point the repubs have HAD to come out FOR the extension, the discussion would all be in the pay for and that fight would be kept alive. I’m thinking the longer it’s alive the worse for them. Americans of all stripes are for millionaires paying more.

Then again I think if we have to we keep the fight for higher revenue from the wealthy alive for another fight. even if next year. Busch tax cuts expire, and we’re going to have to redo the tax tiers and close loopholes and that maybe numero uno for 2013. Before then is to bring down the deficit.. The argument has been made and WON that republicans only care about the rich, and are protecting their tax cuts come hell or high water.

CONGRATULATIONS DONNA! I felt as though I was there. What a nice story for the shopgirls to tell tonight too.

      • December 15, 2011 at 9:31 pm

But what happens to the real people who are surviving only on their unemployment insurance, or who won’t be able to afford both a $1000 tax increase and their rent or food for their kids. It means more to me that Dems are willing to be called “weak” and help people, than that they fight for the “win” at the expense of the American people. I blame the GOP and their greed and love of money – I don’t blame Democrats for fulfilling the requirements of their jobs and serving the people. That’s what they’re supposed to do. The GOP are the ones who are failing here – like Elizabeth Warren said, “I save my rocks for the Republicans”.

        • 291 isonprize
          December 15, 2011 at 9:51 pm

The GOP are the ones who are failing here – like Elizabeth Warren said, ā€œI save my rocks for the Republicansā€.

          THIS, indeed!!

        • December 15, 2011 at 10:19 pm

Theo, you are right on the money. People who feel free to tell the Dems what they ought to do, are not the ones who are living on UI nor are they the ones who would be crushed by having to pay a tax increase next year. It’s so easy to ask the other guy to pay so that the self-righteous can make a big fuss about standing on principles, especially when they don’t have to do the standing themselves.

        • 294 nathkatun7
          December 16, 2011 at 1:33 am

Exactly my sentiments, Theo! I am just so tired of people who think that Democrats alone can force their will on these INSANE right wing teabag Republicans. If it means a two months extension to prevent unemployed people from loosing unemployment insurance, and to prevent struggling people from seeing their taxes go up, then It’s worthy it. May be all of the people who are bad mouthing Democrats would mobilize to put pressure on Republicans to abandon their insanity. Otherwise, just blaming Democrats shows a failure to recognize the real elephant in the room that is determined to harm people in order to defeat President Obama.

I’d rather compassion aka “weakness” over fruitless arguing aka callousness, any day. That’s my line in the sand. I’d rather live to fight another day than to die foolishly and fruitlessly when it is not warranted. 160 million people are more important than the Dem image right now. If people can’t see that, then they are on the wrong side of this fight.

(Reuters) – As the war in Iraq draws to a close, U.S. President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign has quietly enlisted an army of veterans to urge other military men and women to vote for him in November.

The Obama campaign has built a network of more than 700 supportive veterans to promote the president in key states such as Virginia and North Carolina, where 13 percent and 11 percent of residents are veterans, respectively.

These states are among a dozen divided battleground states that could hold the keys to victory in the 2012 election.

The move is a sign that the Obama campaign will aggressively tout the commander-in-chief’s record as a military leader while it tries to assure Americans that the president can lift the struggling U.S. economy.

Veterans to tout Obama’s record as military leader.

I heard a preview of that on the national conference call with OFA HQ in Chicago and it was very, very powerful.

You are going to see a state-of-the-art campaign rolling out for PBO, I can tell you that.

Donna, I think what everyone who’s ever had any close contact with POTUS says is that he is a very, very sweet person who has a lot of concern for what is really happening with everyday people. He has a way of listening and talking that is so accessible. He just lights up every situation and I’m so glad you really had a chance to connect with him. I’m sure you’ll be thinking about this encounter for a very long time!!

DD4O, Thanks so much for sharing this experience with us, from the very beginning! I am particularly happy to hear that you ‘connected’ quite easily with our President without the need of an interpreter. šŸ˜‰ What an awesome, and unforgettable experience! DD, even though you were the front person you somehow managed to make many of us here feel an integral part of this entire experience – part of a wonderful team, and it felt.. .feels really good. Thanks.

I am excited to hear from Donna too, but instead of reading through the entire blog I went right to the bottom to write this email. I am so happy as I just came from an appointment with my Mom’s Oncologist. She has 4th stage lung cancer but has an EGFR mutation and is taking a drug called Tarceva that is supposed to shrink the cancer. The people that see her call it chemo treatment. My brother and I have been dealing with side effects and trying to get her medications balanced. Well, today’s report was good as the test she had last week showed the cancer is shrinking! Happy Days! This is the best Xmas gift ever. I am also dealing with financial paperwork and since the ACA when I dealt with some paperwork 3 years ago when she broke her ankle I can see a real difference in the ease of coordination between Medicare and the supplementary insurance. Glad to see a difference!

Hey Donna, congratulations! I’m so proud of you–just as everyone else here on TOD is proud of you. You deserve all the kudos in the world for your galant presidential fundraising efforts. I’m sure PBO appreciates your efforts as you’ve indicated. I’m glad that he responded to you in the way that he did–that is, in a down-to-earth natural fashion. I had a dream about meeting PBO personally a few months ago (nothing naughty šŸ™‚ ) and in my dream, he seemed to be just the way you described him.

Thanks for thinking of us little people here in TODville. I guess it’s good to know people in high places. šŸ˜‰ I hope you’ve inspired PBO to check us out. We’re glad you told him we have his back.

Donna, that is so fantastic and you truly deserved to hear from President Obama. I have read and reread your post 4 times and I could see it happening just like I was there. That is funny. Donna. President says to Donna………… now you don’t want to be letting Connie take all your time up with your call. How cool is that? So glad she got to share that with you. I can see the packages falling out of your hands and the cashiers running over and jumping up and down. IT’s crazy wonderful. I can see you two sitting there with the big smiles on your faces. I am so happy for you and thankful that we got to share your experience vicarously. What a day. What a way to just happen to take this afternoon off. Congrats Chips, Donna introduced you to THE PRESIDENT. WTG Donna………TOD is on the map!!!!!. What a wonderful experience for all of us to have you share this with us.
