Eugene Robinson: I guess I was wrong. I thought Republicans surely would have come to their senses by now. Instead, they seem to be rushing deeper into madness.

With less than a month to go before the Iowa caucuses, Mitt Romney, the candidate shown by polls to have the best chance of defeating President Obama, evidently remains unacceptable to most of his party. He has spent the summer and fall playing second fiddle to a series of unconvincing “front-runners” who fade into the shadows once their shortcomings become obvious.

The latest is Newt Gingrich, a man with more baggage than Louis Vuitton – and the taste for fine jewelry of Louis XIV, judging by his Tiffany’s bill. Be honest: Is there anybody out there who believes Gingrich would make it through a general-election campaign against Obama without self-destructing? I didn’t think so.

Steve Benen: What’s worse than Fox News’ attempts at reporting? Fox News’ attempts to convey information through images.

Media Matters’ Zachary Pleat highlights this doozy from the Republican news network today, which intends to show the fluctuations in the unemployment rate over 2011 to date.

…. the truly amazing this about the image is that it (a) shows no change between 9% unemployment and 8.6% unemployment; and (b) tells viewers that 8.6% unemployment is higher than 8.8% unemployment.

….. There’s a very good reason Fox News viewers are so confused, so often, about so much.

Washington Post: Michelle Obama now holds part of a world record.

The first lady announced in an email Monday that her October bid to break the record for the most people doing jumping jacks in a 24-hour period succeeded. Mrs. Obama says 300,265 people participated, shattering the old record.

In order to achieve her goal, Mrs. Obama led about 400 elementary and middle-school students from Washington in jumping jacks on the South Lawn of the White House. Other jumping jacks events were held around the world on Oct. 11.

The effort was organized by National Geographic Kids magazine in support of the first lady’s Let’s Move! initiative to promote physical fitness and healthy eating for children.

CBS: Republican presidential frontrunner Newt Gingrich – who has acknowledged marital infidelity in the past – pledged in a written statement to an Iowa social conservative group to “uphold the institution of marriage through personal fidelity to my spouse and respect for the marital bonds of others.”

I’m actually hoping for a Ron Paul upset. His followers need a dose of reality of how harmful and out of touch his ideas and policies are… wanting to end SS/Medicare/Medicaid, wanting creationism in public schools, wanting the government out of everything but a woman’s fetus, not to mention being an overt racist supporting the racist org StormFront. I’ve had it with his supporters fawning over him just because he uses the word “Constitution” like he’s trademarked it.

      December 12, 2011 at 6:54 pm

His supporters are all doped up; that’s why they don’t seem to realize that moronic twit wants to take us back to a time when AA’s were slaves, when women had no rights, when if you had no health insurance you were literally screwed, wants to use gold as our currency. All he spouts is Constitution this, Constitution that. When people really peel back his deranged musings, they’ll see that he wants to rip the Constitution into itty bitty pieces.

LOL! I don’t know if any of you had read about the 80-yr old Florida man who purchased a Dr’s black bag and went from door-to-door performing “free breast exams” on women? Why would those women allow a creepy stranger to touch them without asking for proof that he was in fact a doctor (besides that stupid fake black bag)?

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. 😆 😆 😆 😆 Only in Florida! Who the hell lets a stranger they don’t know from Jack perform a breast exam on them? I wouldn’t be surprised if they allowed him to perform a gynecological exam on them. He’d tell them he was trying to dig his way to pudenda country and find the magical prize.

Hey Hopefruit. For all we know it could have been Ron Paul going door to door. I hear that’s how they practiced medicine in the 1800s.

    • December 12, 2011 at 6:57 pm

I have paid little attention to Ron Paul and for good reason. VIVA OBAMA!!!!

    • December 12, 2011 at 7:31 pm

that would actually be the thing that would really bring some focus to Ron Paul and expose how he would hurt America. But till he gets that kind of focus there’s going to be this romantic (if you will) ideal of his philosophy.

I think I just basically said what you just said. Nin. I should’ve just said THIS

  7. December 12, 2011 at 6:49 pm

So, Newt virtually signs the “fidelity pledge”, and makes a bunch of other promises that can easily be refuted by statements he’s made in the past. What are the so-called Christians going to think when they learn that Newt tried to force Congress to approve funding of abortions when he was Speaker? Newt says that he shouldn’t be judged by his past, but by how he thinks now. So, I guess we should just focus on the racist attacks he’s led against President Obama, saying he’s ruled by his Zombie father, or that he was raised in Kenya, so he thinks like the Mau Mau? I hope he completely destroys himself while he’s the front-runner. He’s so dangerous.

We need more folks like her to quit listening to the emoleft punks like Jane Hamster and Glenn Greedywald and begin listening to the President and us ObamaBots. I’m thankful that she raised a huge buzz with her apology and it got people to sit up and take notice of the good Obama Care/ Healthcare reform does for everyday average people. However, what pissed me off is that she campaigned and volunteered for PBO in 2008, she runs charitable organizations, and she is an important activist in her community so by default, she keeps abreast of all issues. She was keeping abreast of PBO’s accomplishments and when it came to the biggest one of all, an educated person such as herself suddenly decided to tune out? That was very irresponsible on her part. She is not some adolescent who hasn’t lived through previous administrations or doesn’t know that life isn’t full of instant gratification and she tuned out? People like that annoy me because it seems that no matter how much one man slugs for them, no matter how much he sacrifices for them personally and political wise, no matter how much abuse he takes day in and day out it is never enough. People have to get up and take responsibility for their ignorance. Enough is enough.

I’d rather have her admitting she was ignorant and chose to listen to the emoprog noise than continued emogrifters like Jane Hamster and Glenn Greedywald who want another Republican in the Oval Office just to enrich their pockets. Heck, even Howard Dean is on the Obama bandwagon and I was fuming at him during the healthcare fight with his “Kill the Bill” rhetoric.

        • December 12, 2011 at 10:08 pm

You’re right, Michele. It takes a lot of work to keep up with what’s happening and most people are just too lazy to read, listen and keep informed. I know many smart people who don’t bother to learn anything about what’s going on in Washington, dismissing everything as just politics. That’s how people get duped and vote in the stupid.

Tien Le–Your post is exactly the perspective we all need to keep in mind. The Obama campaign never loses focus and knows exactly what needs to be done to get the electoral votes needed. We face a big problem with the state by state campaign to suppress the minority vote, but I firmly believe we can overcome it if we understand what restrictions are being placed and how we can make sure every voter meets the requirements. People are fighting back against the oppressive laws and we might get some lawsuits that will delay them. But we won’t let them defeat us.

    Romney Using KKK Slogan?

    by Steve M.

Steve Benen flags this from Mitt Romney’s stump speech (emphasis added):

“There are people in this room who are informed and who care about this election, who recognize that this is a defining time for America,” he said. “We have on one side a president who wants to transform America into a European-style nation, and you have on other hand someone like myself that wants to turn around America and keep America American with the principals that made us the greatest nation on Earth. And I will do that with your help.”

    “Keep America American”? Really?

Here’s the title of a pamphlet published in 1920 by the United Klans of America, as found in the catalog of Yale’s Beinecke Library:

Why you should become a klansman : of interest to white, protestant, native born Americans who want to keep America American.

Women For Romney, indeed. From TPM:

New Hampshire Democrats are highlighting what they say is a major gender imbalance in Mitt Romney’s primary delegates.

His delegate slate, which lists supporters who would represent him at the Republican convention if he gets enough votes in the primary, includes just three women out of twenty total participants — Beverly Bruce, Donna Sytek, and M.J. Eastwood. By contrast, Newt Gingrich’s slate, which isn’t yet fully completed, has six women out of fourteen listed participants.

Oh. My. God. If all the Dem superpacs make ads like this, the GOP won’t know what hit it. Derision is really all they deserve. From TPM:

A newly incorporated Democratic Super PAC, American LP, is out with what may be the funniest ad of the primaries. The spot features Mitt Romney discussing the Olympics in French, but flashes a subtitled “translation” consisting of old Romney quotes from his days as a pro-choice, moderate Republican in Massachusetts. The effect is reminiscent of Woody Allen’s ‘What’s Up, Tiger Lily?’

Local Tea Party’s skunk photo questioned

Patriot Freedom Alliance, the Tea Party of Hutchinson, carries a picture of a skunk on its website and explains the skunk has replaced the eagle as the symbol for the president.

“It is half black, half white, and almost everything it does, stinks,” it states.

“It’s satire is what it is,” said Thomas Hymer, Hutchinson, who maintains the website, patriotfreedomalliance.org.

“Satire in a politically incorrect form,” he said.

Darrell Pope, president of the Hutchinson branch of the NAACP, said he sees no humor in it and called it “a blatant statement of racism.”

“It’s intended to be malicious,” Pope said.

Tea Party supporters can tout Herman Cain all they want, Pope said, but the skunk posting is “a statement of what they’re all about.”

The national NAACP previously has urged Tea Party leaders across the country to denounce any signs of racism.

Local Tea Party supporter Chuck Sankey agreed with Hymer that it’s satire.

It just makes a point that we’re in trouble and what’s happening doesn’t smell right, Sankey said. “That’s what it means to me.”

Regarding the reference to half-black, half-white, Sankey said, “Isn’t that the truth? What’s wrong with the truth?”

Obama’s mother was a white American, and his father was a black African.

“It may be offensive to some, of course, but in humor there is always an element of truth,” said Sankey, saying he is neither racist nor bigoted but is concerned about the direction the country is going.

If people are offended by it, Sankey said, his advice is: “Don’t look at it.”

Hymer said The News’ call was the first he had received regarding the item, which he posted on Thanksgiving week. He said the site has approximately 300 to 400 visits each month, and around 800 views, revealing visitors are looking at multiple pages. Patriot Freedom Alliance meets regularly and has hosted rallies in the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Hymer, who is retired, started overseeing the website earlier this year. He rotates postings maybe once a month, particularly changing the homepage. He said he either found the skunk post on the Internet or received it in an email.

Cain is an African-American businessman who recently suspended his campaign in the Republican presidential primaries. Among Cain’s backers in Kansas was Jinny Walz, active in the Hutchinson Tea Party. Walz said Friday she had not looked at the local website recently.

Worse than the skunk item, in Hymer’s opinion, were Vice President Joe Biden’s comments during debt limit talks this summer comparing Tea Party Republicans to terrorists. Biden has denied he used that word.

Sankey said former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin has been the target of worse insults.

    • December 12, 2011 at 11:43 pm

These people are just ugly inside and out. They aren’t disrespecting the President, because they don’t know what respect means, and he finds his worth in other ways. They are disrespecting the Office of the President. They probably have children who are learning this hate, too. Very sad.

I think EVERYONE in America needs to know what we know. Probably not possible, sadly, but what do you think about recommending this site on news sites where there is an active political commentary. Does that cause more harm than good, attract too many trollies, too many headaches for you? I just think there is a wealth of info here that I want politically interested (voters) to know—-trying to figure out how to ensnare more participants from all parts of the country.

Gingrich charged in 1994 that 25 percent of President Bill Clinton’s White House staff used drugs, but at the same time admitted that he had also smoked pot 25 years earlier.

“That was a sign we were alive and in graduate school in that era,” he explained.

“See, when I smoked pot it was illegal, but not immoral,” Gingrich reportedly told Wall Street Journal reporter Hilary Stout in 1996. “Now, it is illegal AND immoral. The law didn’t change, only the morality… That’s why you get to go to jail and I don’t.”

    Hi Guys,

Check out the new Barack Obama forum over the usually horrible Democratic Underground. But this is a nice and overall quite safe haven to surf:

what is horrible about Democratic Underground?

    • December 12, 2011 at 8:24 pm

Ah, thanks for that BWD, I gave up visiting that place, the venom is beyond belief – great to hear there’s somewhere there for Democratic supporters of a Democratic president to discuss stuff without being abused!

I am with you Chips. I was there for a long time based on the 2004 stolen election. But they slowly became lethal and bitter. I had to delete their bookmark and never went back. I checked just now on the basis of BWD but I guess I just dont have the stomach. Besides I like it over here.

        • December 12, 2011 at 8:43 pm

Hiya Smilingl8dy, I arrived there much later than you, around 2007, and while I understood the bitterness during the primaries it just amazed me how much seething hatred there was for BHO, even before he was inaugurated. The place was just jammed with people willing him to fail and refusing to give him credit for anything. The last time I read a bunch of threads there was the day DADT was repealed – most of those who accused him of being a homophobe either disappeared that day, or kept on showering him in abuse. It’s astonishing, the place is just another Firebaggerlake.

But there are some seriously great people there – like Frenchie, who visits here – who kept battling away. Their spirit is something else, I just couldn’t take the place any more, beyond ugly.

I recognize all those names, BWD. I was on DU for 7 years before the Obama hate drove me away. At the end we were in the Barack Obama Group affectionately known as the BOG. We were driven underground on a Democratic board with a Democratic President. I am so glad to be a away from that place. There are some great supporters who stayed, though..it’s just not for me.

I saw one name in that line-up who was always an ardent hater..turns out she just wanted to be an ass and the thread was locked. Boy, do I not miss those “locked” freakin’ threads. There was another board I was I for awhile where some there got all in attack mode if anything Michael Moore did was linked..so, that didn’t work for me.

This is the Perfect Place..and I thank Chips so much for leaving when she did and starting her own place..I took the long route but feel fortunate to have landed here. Plop!

P.S. thanks for that link, BWD..I actually saw some names that were good cyberbuds back in the day and got on and said :hi:. I don’t know how I did because you always had to pay to belong to a special group but I got back in and did it. Thanks, again, BWD~

Extending payroll tax relief for another year will boost the economy by putting an extra $1,500 in the pockets of the average American family. But forcing middle-class workers to pay for it is hypocrisy at its worst.

Federal employees are part of the 99 percent. Explain to me, GOP, how slashing their jobs and wages helps the economy.

AFGE has launched a nationwide ad campaign, asking GOP lawmakers to explain their support for wage and job cuts at a time when we should be creating new jobs and putting more money into the pockets of the middle class.

I don’t watch Hardball, but I turned on the TV and heard his final comment about Newt. WOW. He called Newt everything but the child of God. If you get a chance to hear it, I suggest you do so.

Interesting. So now he has turned on him after praising him the week before? I guess he has received the GOP orders to take Newt down, now that the polls have been released showing that Obama beats Mankini even in red state South Carolina.

I am not an advocate for Chris Matthews. As I said I don’t watch his show. However, whatever his motives, he was absolutely correct in calling Newt the sleazeball that he is. I don’t know from whom Chris or any other pundnut may get their marching orders. I simply pointed out a truthful comment.

That’s fine, Sabreen60, but don’t look to Chris to maintain any common sense. I guess you may know this already. He’s a putrid little snake, and a very angry one to boot. Frick Chris Matthews.

And I can’t forget what he said about our First Lady. It was not necessary for Matthews to talk about the Obama family, be he chose too, and I have no more use for him.

OT: I heard a song on the radio this past Friday at a restaurant and I liked it. The tune was running thru my head all Friday eve thru Saturday but now it is fading fast. The problem is I don’t know who the hell sang it (except it was a female), or what is the song’s title. I don’t know what genre of music (sounded like a contemporary easy listening/soft rock type ballad) or whether it’s a Christmas song or not. I hate when I’m looking for a song and I can’t find it because I don’t know enough about it. I feel like blaming the emoprogs for that.

    • December 12, 2011 at 10:06 pm

That drives me crazy too. Something that might fit your description would be Adele who I just love.

    • December 12, 2011 at 10:32 pm

hopefruit —I thought I posted this but it didn’t show up so here goes again. I too hate looking for a song I heard and have no idea who it is but based on your description it might be one of Adele’s songs. Here’s one of them – she is just a beautiful voice. This is “Someone Like You” with 60 million views.

The other popular one of hers that is a more catchy tune is “Rolling in the Deep”.

🙂 🙂 WOW – Great song – she does have a fantastic voice.

In the song I heard on Friday the singer’s voice was not as powerful as Adele’s and rather nondescript, but the melody was nice. I’m thinking it might be one of those earlier country singers like Faith hill but none of the songs i clicked on youtube rang a bell.

Oh well, I guess I will eventually forget about that song I heard on that December Friday eve….

I’ve become a huge fan of Adele. The first song I heard from her was “Chasing Sidewalks”, and the video is amazing – with the dancers dancing while lying down. And there’s another video of her singing “Someone Like You” in her home, live – amazing. She’s very good – and refreshing. I hope she comes out of her vocal chord surgery better than ever!

SEC claims GlaxoSmithKline subsidiary defrauded its employee shareholders
December 12, 2011 | Stephanie Bouchard, Associate Editor

WASHINGTON – A dermatology product manufacturer purchased by pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline in 2009 and its former chief executive are being sued by federal regulators for allegedly defrauding employee shareholders of more than $110 million.

In a complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said that Stiefel Laboratories, formerly a family-owned business located in Coral Gables, Fla., and the company’s then-CEO, Charles Stiefel, withheld information from and misled shareholders, using low valuations to buy back stock between November 2006 and April 2009.

Xe, Formerly Known As Blackwater, Changes Name To Academi
Posted on Monday, December 12, 2011, 3:23 pm by Paddy

And as it always is with Blackwater, it’s so they can get back into Iraq where the big “contracting” (mercenary) work is. That is, when you’re not intimidating members of Congress. “The company formerly known as Blackwater is now the company formerly known as Xe. The Wall Street Journal reports that the security contractor is announcing it’s switched its name to Academi, all part of an effort to be more “boring.”

Academi president and CEO Ted Wright told WSJ that the company has hired an outside company to help it apply for an operating licence in Iraq. “I think eventually, we’re going to get a license; we’re going to do business in Iraq,” Wright said.” The company formerly known as Blackwater is now the company formerly known as Xe.

    It gets curiouser and curiouser…

A perfect storm is brewing for the Republican Nomination that leaves the door wide open for a late starter, so buckle your seat belts because you ain’t seen nothing yet. We’re less than a month away from Iowa. Normally, we would never be having a reality based conversation about who could jump in the race this late and pose a real threat.

However, the Republican nominating schedule for 2012 offers opportunities for late-starting candidates that weren’t available in years past. Given this new structure and the date-a-thon the base seems to be having with each candidate, the field could be wide open in January for a late-starter. In addition to the new rules, we have the added factor that the Republican Party is a house divided that has been unable to identify a clear, sustained front-runner that the base and the establishment can agree upon.

The GOP’s Libertarian Disguise Hides Their Government By Corporation Dreams
    December 12, 2011
    By Rmuse

There are varying opinions concerning government’s role in Americans’ lives, and for conservatives, their constant refrain that government is too big and guilty of overreaching gives the impression that they are Libertarians in disguise. Libertarians have long complained that government has no right imposing rules on Americans, but they never consider the chaos or ill-effects of allowing unregulated businesses to cause harm to the American people.

Republicans want to shrink the government by eliminating programs, agencies, and regulations that protect the people to help corporations and the wealthy prosper while leaving 99% of the population to become worthless peasants to serve the wealthy. If any American with a 3rd grade education stopped and considered the beneficial role the government serves, they would admit that under Libertarian-Republican rule, their lives would be on par with the poorest Afghani citizen.

Port truck drivers thank ‘Occupy Wall Street’ protesters
    By Agence France-Presse
    Monday, December 12, 2011

A group of port truck drivers thanked the “99 Percenters” on Monday for bringing attention to their profession, which they claim is rife with labor abuses. “Normally we are invisible,” they said. “The companies we work for call us independent contractors, as if we were our own bosses, but they boss us around,” the truck drivers said. “We receive Third World wages and drive sweatshops on wheels. We cannot negotiate our rates.”

“Why are companies like SSA Marine, the Seattle-based global terminal operator that runs one of the West Coast’s major trucking carriers, Shippers’ Transport Express, doing this?” they continued. “Why would mega-rich Maersk, a huge Danish shipping and trucking conglomerate that wants to drill for more oil with Exxon Mobil in the Gulf Coast conduct business this way too?” “To cheat on taxes, drive down business costs, and deny us the right to belong to a union, that’s why.”

“I am a persistent son of a gun.” President Barack H. Obama, 44th President of the United States of America.

Remember he told us from Kansas the night that Michelle Obama gave her speech at the convention in Denver, “See you guys, you want a persistent president.” He was referencing how he was persistent in asking Michelle to go out with him. Well, we see what happened to that.

I trust my President ,and I trust what we as dedicated citizens willing to fight with him will do to move this nation forward and help in making the world a better place for all mankind to live in.

    I’m standing with 4 more for 44.

Goodnight Chipsticks and my TOD family. Tucking in a little early. We have work to do, and I need to rest and get the body, mind,, and heart ready to move with the army. I love you all, and I truly thank our wonderful Chipsticks for all that is done on this beautiful haven of ours.
