I do not recall any other First Family being so involved with the public as this one. Was I just not paying attention ?

    I lover this family.

Linda, I have been around for some time, (not disrespecting any other First Lady of the past) but I have not seen any other First Family being so very involved with the public and with so many children in so many different causes. I know because I was involved in one First Lady’s cause where children were involved, but it was limited to one cause.

Yes, I do realize that with new technology, we are exposed to the First Family more than ever. I personally think that every step that this First Family makes will always be scrutinized more than any other First Family, and we have seen that. However, I am so proud to see this First Family give the young people of our nation and all across the globe set such a wonderful example for all human beings.

Thank you, our wonderful First Lady for all that you do.HZ

Linda, I probably was not paying attention. The Obamas is my family, and I enjoy keeping up with what they are doing? I have never cared that much about any First Lady before. Like HZ, I mean no disrespect to any First Lady before, but I’m a fan of FLOTUS. I think the world of her, oh yea her husband is okay too.

    • December 13, 2011 at 1:32 pm

No, this entire family raised the standard for First Families, while the GOP continues to lower the bar for presidential candidates. Even the DOG is involved/connects with people! Just a complete, loving and amazing family.

Don’t forget to boycott Lowes and their hatred. I don’t shop at Home Depot due to being Repugs owned, so I have to stop buying from Lowes. I always find it interesting that people scream freedom of speech to hide behind hatred.

      December 12, 2011 at 4:39 pm

Uh oh, what now?? Do tell. What happened with Lowes? (she says, cringing, knowing that it must be ignorant. UUggghhhhh.)

I was doing Lowes to stay out of HD,. I even wrote Steve Harvey and Tom Joyner (two very popular syndicated radio personalities in the black community) to ask them both to stop accepting advertising from HD. I’m itching to go back to the smaller stores, only problem is that there’s only one in my ‘hood and it’s very small. so sometimes I’m forced to do the big box stores. HD and Lowes are my only two options. Sigh…

Lowes canceled their sponsorship of TLC’s “All-American Muslim” show, based on protests from at least one hate group. They issued a “sorry for your heartbreak” half-hearted apology today, but their decision seems final. Saw a couple news shows today that say there’s an all-out nation-wide boycott of Lowes coming. Hope so.

        December 12, 2011 at 5:09 pm

There is a reality show about modern American muslims and they show that their lives are just like you and I. They show that they are not terrorists as the neocons would have you believe, that they love America just as much as the next person. Apparently the show was doing well and garnering great ratings. With great ratings come sponsors. Lowes sponsored the show but pulled their Ad spot from the show when an Evangelical nut job pastor and his nut job flock made a big stink about Lowes sponsoring a “terrorist” show. Now Lowes is likely going to get sued by the other side who said they acted in a prejudiced manner and now there’s a big boycott of Lowes going on.

      • December 12, 2011 at 5:09 pm

Lowes caved to a campaign by a fundie Florida group and pulled its advertising from TLC’s “All-American Muslim” show.

Apparently, Lowes pulled their advertising from TLC’s “All-American Muslim” show after complaints and boycott threats and such from the crazy people on the right (see here: http://www.angryblacklady.com/2011/12/12/lowes-pulls-advertising-from-tlcs-all-american-muslim-show/). It’s time to go find our local Ace Hardware or True Value Hardware stores. I believe those stores are typically locally-owned which is a good thing for our communities.

Hi JB and UT, I do not know how you do it, but I am going to go to our Grassroots Fundraiser today (from my speciality food funds for the month) and donate again in praise of our beautiful First Dog, Mr. Bo. He is so precious, and so well mannered. He looks like a very well mannered gentleman with mommy in chief in that photo.

So remember, I ask that those of us who were on the ‘naughty mat’ with our “Cocoa Butter “in hand this past week, make this go over the top by the end of the week. And how cute is Bo? Just make you want to go into you stash and donate to a worthy cause. Let ‘s move together! ((((((((Hugs))))))))HZ

Now seems she is most attached and of course, Bo knows which side his biscuit is buttered on…

It Sucks to be the Speaker
    by BooMan
Mon Dec 12th, 2011 at 03:21:00 PM EST

Brian Beutler is too polite. He accurately describes Speaker Boehner’s harebrained idea for passing an extension of the payroll tax holiday and unemployment benefits, but he treats it too seriously. The bottom line is that Boehner doesn’t have the votes in his own caucus to pass the extensions, so he’s trying to sweeten the pot by including all kinds of things that Democrats hate. Chief among these is a provision that would force the administration to make a decision on the Keystone XL pipeline within 60 days. Some Democrats support the pipeline, but that doesn’t mean they will be able to ignore all the other garbage in the bill and give it their support.

And, even if they did, or even if Boehner brought along enough of his own caucus that he didn’t need Democratic votes, he’d still have to strip almost all the crap out to get the Senate to sign off on it in the conference committee. And once everything is pretty much stripped out, then he’s back to his original problem, which is that his own members don’t support the extensions.

Boehner’s problem is that he doesn’t want to get blamed for giving every worker in the country a thousand dollar tax hike while fighting tooth and nail to preserve tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires. But the only way to avoid that problem is to work with Pelosi and to stop trying to win over his nutty right flank.

“Massa” Rush Limbaugh Wants Black Politicians to Be Sure to Have Their Slave Passes
    by chaunceydevega

Rush Limbaugh earned his racist bonafides a long time ago. He is also an existentially and unrepentantly ugly person. Therefore, his suggestion that the head of the Congressional Black Caucus needs to get a slave pass in order to “get off” the Democratic plantation is not at all a surprise. Moreover, that there are millions of petit authoritarians who pray at his sick and twisted mantle of Angry White Male Conservatism, is also not a surprise. Their love is just a symptom of America’s cultural rot, and a dysfunctional political discourse, one identified decades ago by the noted political scientist and historian Richard Hofstadter.

Ultimately, in the 1920s through to the 1960s, there was Father Coughlin; the last few decades brought us Rush Limbaugh. There is really nothing new in the game in regards to ugly talk that plays to Whiteness’s greater devils, as opposed to its lesser angels.

She is impressive in her own right too and could also run for president one day. If only she could be persuaded. I read somewhere that PBO said she hates politics….. I don’t blame her though it’s incredibly taxing

    • December 12, 2011 at 6:16 pm

Actually, I think she used to hate politics, but now that she’s seen how much reach she can get and how much change her voice can enact, she understands the power of politics. I heard her being interviewed recently (drawing a blank) and saying that she’s enjoying it.

                  Then raise United’s banner high,
Beneath it’s shade we’ll live and die,
So keep the faith and never fear,

    • 129 nintendowii10
      December 12, 2011 at 5:13 pm

I don’t get why people buy the hype that he is the “reasonable” conservative in the group. He endorsed the Paul Ryan plan to end Medicare, flip flopped on climate change, and is even trying to get Herman Cain supporters… how the hell is any of that “reasonable”?

I’ve been saying that if I had to live with a Republican in the White House, it would be Huntsman, but the more I see and read about him, the more I shake my head at that thought. If I have to live with a Republican in the White House (it will happen again eventually), it has to be a Republican with the caliber of Meghan McCain: sticking to some conservative principles/ideas, but not being a lockstep ideologue.

      • December 12, 2011 at 6:21 pm

Don’t forget, Meghan McCain is the same lady who was recently praising Michele Bachmann as an impressive, serious, “more smarter” candidate who is being underestimated. She’s also the same woman who said she was planning to “kick Obama’s butt” in 2012, in her role as Republican pundit/strategist. And finally, she’s the one who famously (or infamously) said that she couldn’t speak about history, because she wasn’t born yet. How could she be expected to know.

She may appear on MSNBC, and supported gay causes, but she’s as much of an airhead as the rest of them.

        • December 12, 2011 at 6:34 pm

I’ve got my own beef with Meghan McCain with some of the conservative principles she supports as you pointed out, but she’s not a lockstep idealist. I recently bought her book Dirty Sex Politics, and she’s truly got an open mind for the Republican party as opposed to the current crop who want to continue to move the party further and further to the right. If anyone is an airhead, it’s the females on Fox Propaganda who continue to demonize her for not carrying water 100% for the current crop of the Republican Party.

Found it and watched the last 10 minutes or so. While Huntsman’s speaking skills are poor, Gingrich reminds me of an old joke saying: When I thinks, I thinks hard; and when I thinks hard, I falls asleep. He is horrible to listen to, as well. Just goes on and on and on, hoping someone will join him in thinking what a wonderful speaker he is. He probably talks to the mirror at home – not for practice, but just to see how his eyes light up at the sound of his own voice.

Nameless faceless moderator said President Obama probably won’t show up for a debate, if challenged, and they all chuckled. Sick, jealous people.

It’ll be a while before I start thinking of dinner.

and that was without a teleprompter. I keep on seeing the same old rightwingers trying to use the teleprompter zinger, but it really carries no weight because of how President Obama demolished them there with no teleprompter, and also because most of the rightwing talking heads use teleprompters. Let’s not forget the infamous Bill O Reilly meltdown where he couldn’t read his teleprompter, “FUCK IT WE’LL DO IT LIVE!!!!!”

      • December 12, 2011 at 6:24 pm

Well, the President writes his own speeches (the good ones), so the teleprompter nonsense is just that – pure nonsense. If your own words are flying by you on a little screen – what difference does it make if they are on a paper or on a screen – they’re your own words! And even if they weren’t his own words, at least he understands what they mean. Unlike the Republicans.

I still think the funniest teleprompter rant is when Sarah Palin used the rant against Obama then wrote 3 words on her hand and looked at the hand to remember what to say at the interview. That one even made SNL.

Watching part of President Obama’s speech in Kansas, I’m thinking, how the hell do the Republicans believe they are going to defeat this man? He’s already exposed them as caring more about their political prospects than about the needs of the country.

President Obama continues to demonstrate that he is the only grownup in the room, and both the emoleft and hard right hate that. These past three years we’ve heard the emoleft snivel and whine about him “caving”/”capitulating” and the hard right snivel and whine about him being a dictator/totalitarian/Communist/Marxist/fascist/Stalinist/Maoist/Kenyan/(fill in the blank). Yet he has consistently outpolled all of Congress and especially the Republican clown car of candidates, and yet the hard right believe the anti Democratic/Obama sentiment from last year will carry into next year. I can tell that the President is itching to take them on next year, he is NOT going down without a fight.

Oh man, the Right is seriously pooping its pants over Newt being the nominee.

How’s this for easy money? The right wing talk show host Michael Savage has offered Newt Gingrich a cool $1 million… and all the GOP frontrunner has to do is drop out within three days.

In a statement on his website, Savage says he’ll make the offer official on his show, and lays out (in jarring ALL CAPITAL LETTERS) his reasons that Gingrich should drop out. He runs through the usual gamut of reasons offered for Newt being an electoral disaster, including his rather unpleasant divorces, his buck-raking from Freddie and Fannie, and his stance in favor of a policy the right characterizes as ā€œamnesty.ā€

However, it’s when Savage comes to the issue of the Presidential Debates that he gets really personal:

IN A PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE AGAINST OBAMA, REGARDLESS OF HOW WELL HE DOES, ON TELEVISION, HE WILL COME OFF BADLY COMPARED TO OBAMA AND LOOK LIKE NOTHING MORE THAN WHAT HE IS: A FAT, OLD, WHITE MAN.

When you’ve lost Michael Wiener Savage…

More on the Right losing it over possible nominee Newt:

Speaking on Friday to Fox News’ Judge Napolitano, Beck had some harsh words for the tea partiers who are now apparently rallying to the former House Speaker’s side in the wake of Herman Cain’s implosion.

ā€œI issue a challenge to the tea party members,ā€ Beck said. ā€œYou look at his record, you read his words… see what he believes.ā€ If they do, he claimed, they would see ā€œthis man is a progressive, he knows he is a progressive.ā€ His conclusion seemed to startle even Napolitano:

ā€œSo if you’ve got a big government progressive or a big government progressive in Obama, one in Newt Gingrich, one in Obama, ask yourself this Tea Party: Is it about Obama’s race? Because that’s what it appears to be to me. If you’re against him but you’re for this guy, it must be about race. It’s the policies that matter.ā€

Glenn Beck and Michael Savage attacking Newt. We may be approaching wingnut singularity.

My goodness LL they are definitely having a hissy fit over their potential nominee šŸ™‚

Well the RWNJ’s that are being polled (almost daily) like him because they think Newton Leroy will be bombastic towards the President. They just want to see someone “take it to Obama” in an in-your-face sort of way. This is why they originally “liked” Cain and Trump and Bachmann and Perry. So after all the other nuts have fallen off the Repub tree Newton Leroy is the last man standing. He gets their favor by default and the conservative media pundits and radio hosts go crazy.

It’s still gonna be close next year because the Repubs will rally around whichever candidate wins but it sure is fun watching them out crazy each other in the process.

I don’t trust Beck’s motives here. Romney is to the left of Newt, at least the Romney prior to 2007. Beck is a Mormon right?

I could see if he championed Bachmann, Santorum or Perry even, but to say Mitt is fine too but Newt is a progressive is rather ridiculous.

“Most people are aware by now that more than 100 sponsors have fled Beck’s program since his June 2009 claim that President Obama was a racist ā€œwith a deep-seated hatred of white people.ā€ But this is only the best known event in a 30-year career in broadcasting that has been partly defined by racist humor, racially charged venom, and advocacy for far-right foes of the civil rights movement.

Throughout his career in Top 40 radio, Beck was known for his imitations of ā€œblack guyā€ characters and racist tropes. According to Beck’s former colleagues in the late 90s, this included mocking unarmed blacks shot and killed by white police officers. Such was the case of Malik Jones, the victim of a controversial killing that took place in 1997.”

      http://www.alternet.org/media/147951/glenn_beck_has_a_long_history_of_racial_mockery_on_the_radio_–_his_civil_rights_talk_is_pure_fraud/

I am not sure that tea partiers want to get their advice on anything from Glenn Beck. 1) Because he’s a lying, disgusting, phony and 2) because he lost. In his zeal to bring down the Obama administration, he overreached and lost his sponsors, lost his job, lost a very valuable platform to spew his ignorance and apparently lost favor with the powers that be at Fox.

So if you want to lose, listen to Beck.

Scratch what I said earlier tea partiers. By all means listen to Beck. Take copious notes and follow every inch of his roadmap for you to win in 2012.

Yearly deficit falls below $1 trillion for the first time under Obama
By Erik Wasson – 12/12/11 03:50 PM ET
The Treasury Department forecast Monday that the budget deficit for fiscal 2012 will come in at $996 billion, the first time President Obama has presided over an annual deficit of less than $1 trillion.

The budget deficit in fiscal 2011 and 2010 was $1.3 trillion, while the Obama stimulus law pushed the deficit up to $1.4 trillion in fiscal 2009.

An anti-gay Alabama Republican was reportedly making secret sperm donations to at least nine New Zealand women he met over the internet, unbeknownst to his wife back in America.

Bill Johnson, who made a failed bid for governor of Alabama in 2010, anonymously donated sperm to lesbian couples in New Zealand, according to a report by the New Zealand Herald.

Johnson has spent much of the last year in Christchurch, where he moved without his wife and her three kids (from a previous marriage), in order to help the country’s recovery from the February earthquake.

All the while Johnson was reportedly trolling the internet under the username ā€œchchbillā€ for women who needed help getting pregnant. He reportedly had exchanges with at least nine women — among them several lesbians — at least three of whom are now pregnant.

Reid warns Republicans that filibusters could endanger holiday recess
By Josiah Ryan – 12/12/11 03:26 PM ET
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) warned Republican senators on Monday that filibusters of legislation could lead to an abbreviated holiday break.Ā

“Senate Republicans have blocked four proposals to protect middle-class pocketbooks,” said Reid, speaking of the fragments of President Obama’s legislations that Republicans have refused to advance.

“Every hour they delay and every day they filibuster is one more the Senate will stay in Washington to get its work done,” he said.

Goldman Sachs Top Target of Occupy Protests at West Coast Ports

“The company is part-owner of Carrix Inc., whose SSA Marine provides cargo handling services as the largest U.S.-owned container terminal operator….

“GSIP is primarily made up of pension plans of workers in the United States and Australia, and those groups hire money managers to manage their pension funds,” said Bob Watters, senior vice president at Seattle-based SSA Marine.

“I think they haven’t done their research,” Watters said of the demonstrators in a Dec. 8 telephone interview. “If they had, they would understand that we are a union operation, we support union workers, family-wage projects and make investments to increase those job opportunities….”

Craig Merrilees, a spokesman for the San Francisco-based International Longshore and Warehouse Union, said the ILWU doesn’t support the ports shutdown and criticized the organizers for not consulting the union before planning their protest.

“For longshore workers, it could mean a day without pay or a dispute with the company over whether or not workers will be paid,” Merrilees said in a Dec. 7 telephone interview. “It could also result in workers being unable to leave their jobs after their shift.”

“You can’t have a small group of people issuing declarations about what other people ought to do with regard to giving up a day’s pay or closing their workplace,” Merrilees said. “They could alienate workers and turn them against the very movement that is the best chance we have to make our country more equitable and just.”

Whatever AT&T decides to do, it needs to move fast: DISH Network, the nation’s second-largest satellite TV company, is now also seeking to buy T-Mobile and use its spectrum to ā€œcreate a national wireless network, video, voice and data,ā€ according to DISH CEO Joseph Clayton in an interview with Bloomberg published Monday.

Next year policy wonks, politics junkies, and legal experts will wait with bated breath for the Supreme Court to determine the constitutionality of a key section of President Obama’s health care law: the mandate that uninsured individuals purchase health care coverage.

But the court will also review another major piece of the law — the requirement that states expand Medicaid eligibility to people with incomes of up to 133 percent of the federal poverty line. This is no small expansion. Of all the millions of people expected to become insured under the law, about half will be covered through Medicaid.

For the first several years, the federal government will pay the states for the full cost of the expansion. After 2020, the federal contribution will drop to 90 percent. States with conservative governors don’t like this one bit. But Medicaid is a voluntary program — if states don’t like the terms and conditions the government sets for the program, they’re free to drop out of it.
