afternoon all

Jon Taplin (TPM): Barack Obama learned a political trick from Muhammad Ali called Rope a Dope. For you youngsters, this refers to the epic Rumble in the Jungle Heavyweight fight against George Foreman in 1974….

Last summer during the debt ceiling hostage crisis, Obama appeared to be the loser, but yesterday Republicans woke up to the reality that they lost Big Time – that we were going to get $1.2 trillion in deficit reductions, with 50% of the cuts coming from the military and none of the cuts from Social Security and Medicare. The Congressional water carriers for the Military Industrial Complex are in a panic.

…. So why aren’t progressives celebrating this morning? Got me … If you had suggested to me last spring that a Republican House would pass a bill cutting $600 billion from the Pentagon budget over ten years, I would have called you crazy. But that is just what happened.

So there is only one election that matters a year from now. And that is that President Obama will be reelected and able to keep his veto threat….

This is an amazing victory and all we have to do to hold on to it is reelect the President.

The Hill: The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) said Tuesday that President Obama’s 2009 stimulus package continues to benefit the struggling economy.

…. By CBO’s numbers, the $800 billion stimulus added up to 0.9 million jobs in 2009, 3.3 million jobs in 2010 and 2.6 million jobs in 2011. As the effects of the stimulus wind down, Obama has been pushing Congress to enact a $447 billion jobs bill that includes infrastructure spending and tax cuts.

Steve Benen: Romney’s willingness to lie to voters raises important questions about his integrity, but the question now becomes whether television stations will participate in the lie by airing a spot that’s proven to be deceptive.

Steve Benen: President Obama’s week-long trip to Asia didn’t generate a lot of attention from the domestic media, and based on Walter Russell Mead’s description, that’s a real shame. Americans have every reason to be pleased with the results of the president’s successful efforts:

The cascade of statements, deployments, agreements and announcements from the United States and its regional associates in the last week has to be one of the most unpleasant shocks for China’s leadership – ever …. Rarely has a great power been so provoked and affronted. Rarely have so many red lines been crossed. Rarely has so much face been lost, so fast…. [I]t was as decisive a diplomatic victory as anyone is likely to see. Congratulations should go to President Obama and his national security team.

…. I suspect the number of Americans who’ll vote in 2012 based on foreign policy can meet in a broom closet, but it’s getting tougher for even the harshest White House critics to deny President Obama’s impressive record on foreign policy…..

I cannot believe Mitt thought he would get away with his deceiving ad.

    • November 22, 2011 at 4:24 pm

His campaign is saying “see our trick worked, as everybody is talking about our ad” but it makes no sense as Mitt looks dishonest and Pres Obama isn’t running away from the economy he’s been talking about it for months and months. Also if Mitt’s opening shot is to lie in an ad maybe the GOP folks who are voting for him because they think he has the best chance against Pres. Obama might have second thoughts.

What I think he was doing with it is trying to make it about Romney vs Obama, in his game of trying to look like the inevitable nominee.

    How quickly things turn.

Less than four months ago the wingers were celebrating the debt ceiling deal, with Boehner saying he got 98% of what he wanted. Progressives were freaking out and calling for the President’s impeachment.

Last nite, a progressive authority no less than Robert Reich hailed President Obama for his “tactical brilliance” and David Brooks was left screaming in defeat.

    • November 22, 2011 at 5:19 pm

So how is it that we figured out what the president was doing on the debt ceiling and so-called experts like Robert Reich didn’t? We were all saying this last summer because we knew PBO had checkmated the R’s and that Boehner did not read the bill he was bragging about. Either we are all exceptionally brilliant or the regressives are deliberately obtuse. They seem to have one default setting no matter what happens. Act outraged, rant and whine. So tedious.

I am listening to Rhandi Rhodes right now and this guy is on the phone asking “where is the president?” in regards to the police brutality inflicted on the OWS crowd. Rhandi jumped right on the bandwagon. As soon as PBO say something this movement becomes about him. Suddenly, they want him to jump in and save the day while they have been b******* at him. I heard this same question on another radio show this morning. This upsets me. Now Rhandi is playing the hecklers from this morning. The guy said that he was not impressed with what PBO had to say.

I heard that cos and I just disconnected. President Obama just got back from 9 days of grueling travel to help spur job creation. He hits the ground running as soon as he gets back to continue the focus on The American Jobs Act. And now he is getting hammered because he didn’t respond properly to the mic check folks? Give me a break. How about a little respect for the president. That call and Randi really annoyed me. There were similar demands during the demonstrations in Wisconsin. I think Ed Schultz even said that President Obama should have been protesting with the folks in Wisconsin. Unbelievable.

          Exactly jojo.

It’s time for the people who sat on their arses and didn’t vote or voted for Republicans in the 2010 midterms to get some heat. President Obama told them how important it was to vote and he told them not to give the keys back. This reminds me of something wonderful that Congressman Barney Frank said on an interview on MSNBC a few months back. He was talking about the Republican Party obstruction against Dodd Frank and getting a director for the CFPB. He said to the people who are frustrated…………………….

The results of the 2010 midterms should be a wake up call for the Occupy Wall Street protesters. I will start to take them seriously when they start REGISTERING PEOPLE TO VOTE. They can protest until they are blue in the face and it is not going to change anything. The change will happen when the American people cherish their right to vote and fight like hell anybody who tries to deprive them of that right.

In the end The President has taken the right approach to allow them to speak out like he did today. It makes them look unreasonable and fringe. All of everybody’s comments x 1,000,000! I was listening to her show as well today and just utterly disgusted and irritated by the hypocrisy of it all. Just last week mind you, this “movement” was claiming to anyone who would listen that it was Obama and his adminstration covertly working with the local law enforcement nationwide to evict the prostestors and break up their encampments for good. Remember that? They claim to be apolitical but now want Obama to use his bully pulpit to decry police brutality. Ok All well and good, a symbolic gesture, but THEN WHAT? Make him call in the national guard so the movement can “take back” the parks to resume camping while they stand guard? And, THEN WHAT?? Randi was doing a better job on this issue IMO, last week, when she was taking the movement to task for not having a strategy and end goal; and asking THEN WHAT, What’s next. I found it extremely telling that all the pro occupy people that called into that show last week couldn’t even answer that question with any kind of specifcs when asked. And then some Occupy folks apparently turned on her on Twitter and started calling her names. Utter stupidty and immaturity.

The one good thing about Rhandi’s show today is that it sent me right back to OFA website where I made another donation to the re-election campaign. Inhale, exhale, WOOSAH. Feel much better now..

Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, the head of Egypt’s Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, repeatedly that the nation’s military would not seek the presidency.

Here’s a few highlights from the speech, which was delivered in Arabic: We will hand over power to an elected civilian authority. SCAF is only interested in the interests of the people. We don’t care about who will win elections or who will be the next president. It’s up to the people to decide. We are not looking into the presidency.

Tantawi also confirmed that he had accepted the resignation of the transitional government.

WOO HOO! Keep pressing on, President Obama. Keep pressing on! The world sees who you really are–even if some of your fellow countrymen cannot.~

US President Barack Obama completed a stunningly successful eight-day trip to the Asia-Pacific region last week, confounding China and strengthening America’s commitment to more half the world’s population. Although it upends conventional wisdom, Obama’s foreign-policy saavy may prove to be his most convincing argument for re-election — all the more so as Republican presidential contenders bounce from isolationism to overt aggression to appalling ignorance on international issues.

With a weak economy, high unemployment and a dysfunctional Congress dimming the prospects of transformative success on the homefront, Obama seems to have decided to focus on America’s long list of vital national security and economic interests around the world. The Asia trip was the boldest of his presidency.

UK cuts ties with Iranian banks, US to slap the country with new sanctions

The United Kingdom cut ties with Iranian banks today, due to fears about its nuclear program, the Associated Press reported. Britain’s Treasury Chief George Osborne said UK financial institutions will end all business relationships and transactions with Iranian banks, including the Central Bank of Iran and extending the all branches and subsidiaries of Iranian banks, the AP reported. This is the first time Britain has cut an entire country’s banking sector from the UK’s financial sector.

Osborne said that Iran’s nuclear activities “pose a significant risk to the national interests of the UK and countries across the region,” the AP reported. It is expected that the United States will also hit Iran with new sanctions, sources told CNN. President Obama’s administration plans to add sanctions against Iran’s petrochemical industry, hoping to bar other foreign companies from doing business with Iran’s industry too, CNN reported.

Romney Camp Defends Distorted Obama Quote

Mitt Romney is under a hailstorm of criticism in the press today for his latest anti-Obama ad, which cuts up a clip of President Obama quoting a Republican strategist in 2008 to make it appear that the line in question is Obama’s. But the campaign is defending the spot despite virtually universal condemnation from independent fact checkers.

The ad in question draws from a clip of Obama in 2008 quoting a McCain aide as saying “if we keep talking about the economy, we’re going to lose.” The Romney ad lops off the president’s explanation of the source, presenting it as Obama’s own words. Per CBS News, Romney New Hampshire advisor Tom Rath is fine with it: Romney senior New Hampshire adviser Tom Rath tells CBS News the ad is “exactly what we want.”

“They were using McCain’s words to make fun of McCain. And we’re using the exact same technique,” he said. Pressed on whether it was unfair to lop off the top of Mr. Obama’s comments — which would show the president was quoting the McCain camp — Rath said, “He did say the words. That’s his voice.” He then [suggested] that the more people discuss the ad, the better it is for the Romney campaign.

Of that, planetary scientists are certain, which leaves them puzzling over what could be producing methane gas detected in the thin Martian air. Methane molecules are easily blown apart by ultraviolet light from the Sun, so any methane floating around must have been released recently.

Could the gas be burbling from something alive? Cows, after all, burp methane on Earth. Other creatures, including a class of micro-organisms that live without oxygen, also produce methane.

NASA could get some answers soon. On the launching pad at Cape Canaveral in Florida is a spacecraft, the Mars Science Laboratory, which is scheduled to lift off on Saturday and plop down on Mars next August. It will deliver an S.U.V.-size rover named Curiosity that carries an instrument that can detect methane in the air, and if it does, it will unleash a new wave of excitement about the prospect of life on Mars.

    Hi TOD Family; Here is some food for thought and reflection for us all. When the daily junk is pushed in our faces just stop and think of this;

We all know this person Herman Cain(aka-Koch_Cain) who is trying to become President of these United States.
Who was the head of the GODFATHER”S PIZZA Chain .Also has told a group or two “When he got the job at Godfathers
he couldn’t make a pizza.Well we see the reason why in his own words”We need a Leader not a Reader”. Well I’m here to tell you
a few facts and here goes.Yes we have a “Reader” who happens to be a” Godfather” to our Country. He come from the area
that produced a Godfather or two Lincoln who held the union together and a infamous one Capone who brought us TV and
movie entertainment about crime life, that area is Illinois. You see President Obama is a true Godfather of our Country and it’s
People. In the true spirit of a Godfather. Our President protects, honors us and serves with honor.

    (A) Even though our soldiers were sent off to war in a dishonorable way by someone else.He has brought them home with honor and pride.
He has even met them like a true father with respect even the fallen. With the heartbreak lining his face and graying his hair.

    (B) Even with Our boys are on a mission,he thinks of the love ones left behind and cares for them too.Makes sure they are not forgotten.

    (C) He protects us in every way he can and I need not show each way.But in true Godfather lore mess with my people you pay the Price “NO

    (D) While doing all these things he has saved jobs in industry, from cars to oil,to the environment during the oil spill.

    (E) Now he had take on all the blockheads on wall street and in Congress to save this Country from ruin with everyone telling him “NO”
    sometimes “HELL NO”.

But like a true Godfather he shakes your hand with a smile that could melt butter and that cold steel in those dark eyes that says you really don’t
want me mad. You see my friends I had a CO in the Airborne just like him could smile and joke with the best of them.As our President did at that White House Dinner. The CO could go on jump ready for war and never miss a beat.

So to end this little piece of history,we have the true GODFATHER and doesn’t give a damn about making pizza. But building a great foundation for our Country each and everyday for us all.

I’d say everyone needs to wipe Home Depot off their maps if they haven’t already. Just saw on Nightly News a clip of the owner—-Langone?—-saying this a.m. on Squawk Box that if we can get rid of the guy in the WH, we’ll be on the road to economic recovery, that rich people need cheerleaders, not someone who makes them feel bad about being rich and blah blah blah, hateful nonsense. It was ugly—–Brian Williams said he had an avalanche of response, but I’m not sure why he felt he needed to air that clip. Anyhoo—–Home Depot—-GONE-ZO.

      Hi dotser

I agree, in fact everyone who can needs to find a local hardware store, building materials supplier. They will often match advertised prices at the box stores and are much better for the economy. Shop Local

I am done with the they…I will buy from my local hardware store even if it’s more. They really don’t discount much anyway.

The only thing I get from Home Depot is the Cobra Zip-it Drain Cleaning tool (and let me tell you, it’s better for the environment than chemical openers and works faster, even if the results are a bit nasty). Lowe’s has it as well, so no more Home Depot for me.

The owner of Home Depot is a crazy Republican and has hated POTUS since he started running. And he was really critical in 2008 when it was obvious John McCain was struggling. He’s like the owner of the Dolphins, “If Obama wins he was leaving the country.” Not only did he not leave the country, he had to sell parts of his team to the Williams sisters, JLo, Mark Anthony and others. I saw with these douche bags, shop local and avoid their stores.

Good news for California high speed rail-

High-speed rail funding rejected by Florida Gov. Rick Scott officially became California’s gain Tuesday as the Department of Transportation granted nearly $1 billion to the California High-Speed Rail Authority.

In February, Scott rejected about $2.4 billion from DOT for a $2.6 billion high-speed train line from Tampa to Orlando, declaring in April that the money should go back to taxpayers or be used for deficit reduction.

This will really help, as this us just what they needed there!

Connecticut busway will ease commutes, create jobs
If commuters in Connecticut need something to be thankful for this week, they got it this morning when the Federal Transit Administration signed an agreement with the Connecticut DOT to help fund the state’s first bus rapid transit system.
When the New Britain-Hartford Busway is complete in two years, riders will be able to board buses at several stations, then bypass cars stuck in traffic on I-84 and reach work and other destinations quickly.  The project will include 11 stations, park and ride connections to other suburban transit service, and 31 new clean-fuel buses serving New Britain, Newington, West Hartford, and Hartford.  The Busway will also connect passengers to Amtrak intercity rail service at Hartford’s Union Station.
The project will use an abandoned railroad right-of-way that runs between downtown New Britain and Hartford.  Transforming this route into a busway and building stations is expected to create 4,000 construction jobs.

Dear Chip, have I ever told you how much I appreciate your blog and the hard work that you put into it curating information from all over so that we can be reminded every day why we voted for President Obama, and why we still support him, and why we should put our hearts and souls into getting him reelected? Well, if I haven’t, I’m doing so now. Thank you. You make my day, every day! Love to you and keep up the great work!

Less than a week after a three-man crew arrived at the international space station, the new residents may need to “shelter in place” as a chunk of a destroyed Chinese weather satellite veers close to the station.

On Tuesday afternoon, NASA’s mission control in Houston informed astronaut Dan Burbank that the four-inch piece of space debris might pass close enough to the station early Wednesday morning to trigger the safety measure.

“On our most recent track, it was going to come within a half-mile” of the station, said Kelly Humphries, a NASA spokesman.

The Department of Defense’s Strategic Command, which monitors about 21,000 objects in orbit — including active satellites and space junk — notified NASA of the close call this afternoon, Humphries said.

But the warning came too late for the usual precaution: firing the station’s thrusters to move the football field-size orbiting outpost out of the way. It takes 30 hours to plan and execute a burn of the station’s Russian-built thrusters, NASA said.

If further tracking shows the debris heading into the “red zone” around the station, NASA will order Burbank and his two Russian companions to close hatches between station modules and head to their Soyuz spacecraft.
