Don’t you think that Noth and DeNiro are especially sensitive to PBO because of their interracial marriages and at least in DeNiro’s case bi-racial children (don’t know if Noth has children)? l’m sure people in interracial marriages appreciate PBO as a role model for their children and may see them in him and because they don’t want their children’s dreams crushed by the bigots in society, their support for PBO now is a way of improving the future for their children later.
I did not say that was the only reason for their support I just think it may be a factor. You are free to disagree but I know people with bi-racial children who are genuinely concerned about how they are received in a race-conscious country so what may seem glib to you is of supreme importance to them. It does not diminish PBO at all; it just reinforces the universality of his appeal. Many people relate to him in a deeply personal way and to assume otherwise is to ignore reality.
Thank you. It isn’t simplistic or shallow to be concerned about how one’s child might navigate in a racist society and to find encouragement and strength in PBO’s ability to do so. Imagine a white parent raising a child who society will most likely identify as a person of color having to watch their child suffer in ways that they did not. They could find great comfort in PBO’s example.

Hi forus50, sorry you’re having so much trouble. Bizarrely, I’m having the same problems at the moment on my laptop, but not on my desktop – and I’m using the latest version of Firefox on both. I think you’re probably just having trouble seeing Videopress videos (ie videos I upload myself on to the site), and not YouTube videos? There always seem to be issues with these WordPress blogs and Internet Explorer, but I’m clueless as to why. WordPress recommend using Firefox or Chrome, but Safari is actually working best for me right now. Could you try another browser and see if it works for you? And check that you have the latest version of Adobe Flash (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/)?

Thank you so much for the advice. I think that might be it. I have a work laptop at home and my IT guys said that I can’t add Google Chrome to it as it interferes with various work software. But that must be it. I just searched on Youtube for the Chris Noth video and didn’t see it so I guess I will have to imagine what he said. By the way, quite impossibly, he’s even more handsome in person.

How can Thomas and Scalia not recuse themselves on the ACA challenge? They were the guests of honor at a dinner of one of the law firms challenging the health care law, on top of all their Koch related activities. This is just unbelievable to me, to say nothing of Thomas’ wife founding a tea party group and going around the country yelling about how evil the healthcare law is. I have my doubts too except for the fact that two of the most conservative courts ruled in favor of ACA. I think PBO’s lawyers will use their arguments, especially those of that ultra conservatives guy in the DC courts., so I’m less worried about this that I was initially. I see Kennedy and even Scalia voting in favor of, along with Sotomeyer, Kagan, Ginsburg and Roberts, Alito and Thomas ruling against.

Hi lisalovesobama.. I watch it on my laptop the next day or there after cause I don’t have a tv but I know it’s Sunday night at 9pm on CBS. And, try to get the first season on netflix and those you’ve missed. The writing and acting is Excellent and they like Obama. The Executive Producers are Tony and Ridley Scott.
I don’t watch TV per se, but that’s one show I might find time to relax for. If they like my President, I’d most likely like them too ! Yes, I am definitely prejudiced. 😀

The Grand Canyon Trust is offering $1 million for renewable-energy projects on tribal lands across Arizona through a settlement with the utilities that expanded the Springerville Generating Station coal-fired plant in 2009.
Salt River Project paid $5 million to help offset the environmental impacts of the expansion with tribal renewable-energy projects but has struggled to spend all the money yet because it has not found enough viable projects on nearby reservations, officials said.
“It has been difficult to get projects in operation,” said Lori Singleton, SRP manager of program operations for solar, sustainability and telecommunications. “We wanted to extend the reach and allow more Indian communities to participate and get some viable projects out there in operation.”
The Grand Canyon Trust challenged the new coal-fired generator — which burns about 5,500 tons of coal a day, or 46 rail cars worth — so SRP agreed to the $5 million “Renewable Energy Investment Fund.”
Grand Canyon Trust officials originally wanted the fund to compensate the people on reservations who live with air pollution from nearby coal-burning plants and the impacts of high-power transmission lines, but who don’t benefit from the power.
“We hoped expanding the fund would really allow us to build some projects and start to kind of make a difference instead of holding onto the money as we have been,” Singleton said.
Since 2008, the fund has paid or committed about $700,000 to a variety of renewable-energy projects for homeowners, schools and tribal governments on the Hopi, Navajo, Hualapai, and Yavapai-Apache reservations.

Wow, just wow. You know, every time you think that the GOP has hit rock bottom. Every time you think this party couldn’t possibly pick a new hero who is more intellectually deficient than the last, they top themselves. Sarah Palin was bad, and most Americans thought that her ignorance was aberration. Her elevation to the national stage was a tragic mistake made by the McCain campaign. Next came Michele Bachmann, and from the loins of the support of Bachmann sprung Rick Perry, and the embers of Rick Perry have sired Herman Cain.
Even by the low, low standards of today’s Republican Party, this was bad. I mean for Pete’s sake it was Libya. It has been all over the news since the spring. This wasn’t exactly a gotcha question. Cain has been asked about Libya during this year’s GOP debates. It is a foreign policy softball. They don’t get much easier than Libya, and Herman Cain was absolutely, comprehensively stumped.
Ha I just posted something to this affect on the previous thread. It reminded me of Putin peering into Sarah the Quitter’s living room, and the hand scribbled crib notes and the ‘I read them all’ newspaper answer and my fav ‘In what respect, Charlie?’ all rolled into one in that Cain clip.
In a week, the GOP will again vote on a Balanced Budget Amendment, the cockamamie economic proposal they have toyed with several times over the last several months, including during the debate over raising the debt ceiling. The vote is part of the final compromise to raise the debt limit, in which President Obama and Senate Democrats promised to hold a vote on such an amendment, despite the fact that such votes have failed numerous times in the past.

Today, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) added to that criticism, releasing a study highlighting a piece from Macroeconomic Advisers that notes that such an amendment would make future recessions “deeper and longer” and saying that if a BBA had been enacted prior to the 2008 recession, the “effect on the economy” would have been “catastrophic”….
If the 2012 budget were balanced through spending cuts, those cuts would total about $1.5 trillion in 2012 alone, the analysis estimates. Those cuts would throw about 15 million more people out of work, double the unemployment rate from 9 percent to approximately 18 percent, and cause the economy to shrink by about 17 percent instead of growing by an expected 2 percent.

‘LINCOLN – Speaker of the Legislature Mike Flood said Monday that TransCanada has agreed to move the Keystone XL pipeline out of the Nebraska Sand Hills.

The website was apparently subjected to a distributed denial of service attack. Wisconsin Democrats and United Wisconsin had teamed up to a launch a campaign on Tuesday to recall Walker and Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch.
“If Scott Walker and the Republican Party are really concerned with protecting the integrity of the recall process, they will immediately condemn the criminal cyber attack on United Wisconsin’s website and call on Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen to launch a full investigation with the assistance of the FBI,” the Democratic Party of Wisconsin said in a statement.

Don’t you think that Noth and DeNiro are especially sensitive to PBO because of their interracial marriages and at least in DeNiro’s case bi-racial children (don’t know if Noth has children)? l’m sure people in interracial marriages appreciate PBO as a role model for their children and may see them in him and because they don’t want their children’s dreams crushed by the bigots in society, their support for PBO now is a way of improving the future for their children later.
Rather simplistic and shallow assessment of the deep support of perfectly smart, informed and astute observers/supporters of a deserving president…
Sometimes we tend to unwittingly diminish our President and those who support him with such glib offerings…
I did not say that was the only reason for their support I just think it may be a factor. You are free to disagree but I know people with bi-racial children who are genuinely concerned about how they are received in a race-conscious country so what may seem glib to you is of supreme importance to them. It does not diminish PBO at all; it just reinforces the universality of his appeal. Many people relate to him in a deeply personal way and to assume otherwise is to ignore reality.
Oh come now. Lots of people connect with Pres. Obama on a personal level and not just by his political views or accomplishments.

Imagine a white parent raising a child who society will most likely identify as a person of color having to watch their child suffer in ways that they did not. They could find great comfort in PBO’s example.

Hi forus50, sorry you’re having so much trouble. Bizarrely, I’m having the same problems at the moment on my laptop, but not on my desktop – and I’m using the latest version of Firefox on both. I think you’re probably just having trouble seeing Videopress videos (ie videos I upload myself on to the site), and not YouTube videos? There always seem to be issues with these WordPress blogs and Internet Explorer, but I’m clueless as to why. WordPress recommend using Firefox or Chrome, but Safari is actually working best for me right now. Could you try another browser and see if it works for you? And check that you have the latest version of Adobe Flash (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/)?

Thank you so much for the advice. I think that might be it. I have a work laptop at home and my IT guys said that I can’t add Google Chrome to it as it interferes with various work software. But that must be it. I just searched on Youtube for the Chris Noth video and didn’t see it so I guess I will have to imagine what he said. By the way, quite impossibly, he’s even more handsome in person.
I had to switch from IE to Google Chrome—-and have had no further probs.

How can Thomas and Scalia not recuse themselves on the ACA challenge? They were the guests of honor at a dinner of one of the law firms challenging the health care law, on top of all their Koch related activities. This is just unbelievable to me, to say nothing of Thomas’ wife founding a tea party group and going around the country yelling about how evil the healthcare law is. How can this be considered fair or any kind of “justice” with these 2 on the court? Seems corrupt to me, our Supreme Court.

I have my doubts too except for the fact that two of the most conservative courts ruled in favor of ACA. I think PBO’s lawyers will use their arguments, especially those of that ultra conservatives guy in the DC courts., so I’m less worried about this that I was initially. I see Kennedy and even Scalia voting in favor of, along with Sotomeyer, Kagan, Ginsburg and Roberts, Alito and Thomas ruling against.

The Grand Canyon Trust is offering $1 million for renewable-energy projects on tribal lands across Arizona through a settlement with the utilities that expanded the Springerville Generating Station coal-fired plant in 2009.
Salt River Project paid $5 million to help offset the environmental impacts of the expansion with tribal renewable-energy projects but has struggled to spend all the money yet because it has not found enough viable projects on nearby reservations, officials said.
“It has been difficult to get projects in operation,” said Lori Singleton, SRP manager of program operations for solar, sustainability and telecommunications. “We wanted to extend the reach and allow more Indian communities to participate and get some viable projects out there in operation.”
The Grand Canyon Trust challenged the new coal-fired generator — which burns about 5,500 tons of coal a day, or 46 rail cars worth — so SRP agreed to the $5 million “Renewable Energy Investment Fund.”
Grand Canyon Trust officials originally wanted the fund to compensate the people on reservations who live with air pollution from nearby coal-burning plants and the impacts of high-power transmission lines, but who don’t benefit from the power.
“We hoped expanding the fund would really allow us to build some projects and start to kind of make a difference instead of holding onto the money as we have been,” Singleton said.
Since 2008, the fund has paid or committed about $700,000 to a variety of renewable-energy projects for homeowners, schools and tribal governments on the Hopi, Navajo, Hualapai, and Yavapai-Apache reservations.

In a week, the GOP will again vote on a Balanced Budget Amendment, the cockamamie economic proposal they have toyed with several times over the last several months, including during the debate over raising the debt ceiling. The vote is part of the final compromise to raise the debt limit, in which President Obama and Senate Democrats promised to hold a vote on such an amendment, despite the fact that such votes have failed numerous times in the past.

Today, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) added to that criticism, releasing a study highlighting a piece from Macroeconomic Advisers that notes that such an amendment would make future recessions “deeper and longer” and saying that if a BBA had been enacted prior to the 2008 recession, the “effect on the economy” would have been “catastrophic”….
If the 2012 budget were balanced through spending cuts, those cuts would total about $1.5 trillion in 2012 alone, the analysis estimates. Those cuts would throw about 15 million more people out of work, double the unemployment rate from 9 percent to approximately 18 percent, and cause the economy to shrink by about 17 percent instead of growing by an expected 2 percent.

A New York Times examination reveals that the gun lobby and their Republican allies have successfully eliminated hearings and common-sense restrictions on ex-cons’ ability to immediately reclaim their guns, with deadly consequences:

Ex-cons’ easy access to guns serves as a bizarre juxtaposition with the barriers they face trying to vote. All but two states restrict ex-cons’ ability to vote after they are released, with 36 prohibiting them from voting while they are on parole and three disenfranchising former felons for the rest of their lives. Ex-cons are the single biggest group of disenfranchised citizens in the country, with 4.7 million Americans — or one in 43 adults — having currently or permanently lost their right to vote as the result of felony conviction.

Coming out of Nebraska – A change in plans re pipeline route?
‘LINCOLN – Speaker of the Legislature Mike Flood said Monday that TransCanada has agreed to move the Keystone XL pipeline out of the Nebraska Sand Hills.
Flood said late Monday afternoon that he had just gotten the word from TransCanada officials that they would voluntarily change their original route. The new route will steer clear from the ecologically sensitive Sand Hills, which overlie the Ogallala Aquifer.

The website of United Wisconsin, the group leading the recall campaign against Republican Gov. Scott Walker, was temporarily knocked offline by a cyber attack on Tuesday. The website was apparently subjected to a distributed denial of service attack. Wisconsin Democrats and United Wisconsin had teamed up to a launch a campaign on Tuesday to recall Walker and Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch.
“If Scott Walker and the Republican Party are really concerned with protecting the integrity of the recall process, they will immediately condemn the criminal cyber attack on United Wisconsin’s website and call on Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen to launch a full investigation with the assistance of the FBI,” the Democratic Party of Wisconsin said in a statement.
