Steve Benen: …. as it turns out, Bush’s approval rating the summer before his re-election bid isn’t much different than President Obama’s current approval rating. Bush had a few months to see his support grow; Obama has a year.
And why did Bush’s support grow from the mid-40s to the low-50s? Chait argued, persuasively, that voters starting seeing the president “within the context of a partisan choice,” and decided they liked him more after taking a look at the wealthy Massachusetts challenger with an awkward personality and who was often accused of flip-flopping.
Ahem.
…. If Republicans were a popular party with a popular agenda, this would be a very different story. Likewise, if Obama were a poor campaigner facing a charismatic GOP frontrunner, I’d a different set of expectations. But I’ve seen a lot of Obama political obituaries, and at this point, none of them have proven persuasive to me.

Videos from Cannes:
Good afternoon Family. Finish my errands and now to tweet and post.
I’d like to post this on a current thread instead of being behind all the time. I was trying to find out when the Senate 60 vote to not have a filabuster came to be? I also wonder about the current rules of filabuster that do not require the Senators to be in attendance? On the first 60 vote I saw a post stating the 90s and since that was when Clinton was in office but under a Republican Congress. I wonder another point and in deciding they needed 60 votes did that get a signature from the President or is that not what happens when it only involves the Senate?
Check these links out, might be helpful
http://articles.cnn.com/2010-01-19/politics/uspolitics.filibuster_1_filibuster-civil-rights-act-southern-democrats?_s=PM:POLITICS
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filibuster_in_the_United_States_Senate
I don’y think they had a vote on the filibuster. I think Harry Reid counted behind the scenes and found that he wouldn’t get to 60.
Obama Grandmama, the 60 vote cloture rule was agreed on by the Senate. Senate rules do not require a presidential signature. So, in this case, President Clinton had absolutely nothing to do it. The only way to change the 60 vote huddle is up to the Senators and the Senators alone.
By the way, OG, I overlooked explaining the origin of the filibuster which goes way back to a rule adopted by the Senate that requires unanimous consent before the senate can proceed to debate and vote on any bill. If there is no unanimous consent, the Senate can only proceed if 60 senators vote in favor of proceeding. Actually the 60 vote was an improvement. Before, Senate rules required 2/3 (67 votes) of Senators to overcome objections (filibuster) by one or more Senators. To be clear: under Article I of the Constitution, each house of Congress (the Senate and the House of Rep.) sets its own rules of operation. The President is not at all involved.
Good explanation Nathan.
It is mind-boggling to me that most Americans will not see any of Obama’s trip to Europe or the love which people feel towards him all over the world. Thanks Chips for this wonderful site. Your stats reflect hope that a wider audience than just the MSM watchers will be able to see and appreciate what this amazing man and his wife have done for US public relations around the world.
That is mind-boggling. And a damn shame. This is the worst abuse of the purpose of the so-called “free press” that I’ve seen in my lifetime.
The public never gets to see all the beautiful photos we see, all the proof of the high regard shown President Obama by world leaders, all the close relationships he has fostered. I didn’t expect the glorious Obama In The Rain photo on NBC Nightly News, but I expected something more than Chuck T. making a few snarky comments as the total summary of Obama’s trip. If you let the public in on the truth, it would be hard to shape the news as they are inclined to want to do.
That’s our MSM…..attempting to use their reach to leverage political influence. They are as much PBO’s adversaries as the Teapublicans.
Maddow cut to the chase last night, in what I thought was a very good segment. All this time KochCain has been a performance artist! Sometimes what you think is hiding, has been right in front of you all along!
http://thepoliticalcarnival.net/2011/11/05/video-herman-cain-the-practical-joke-no-one-is-getting/
All his stuff—-I’m a brother from a different mother etc.—-are lines from movies etc.!!! It’s all one Big Joke, one Big Sham???
Pretty much! When he quotes a “poem” he got from Pokeman……along with connecting all the other dots? Joke hiding in plain sight.
I guess I am not sure why this fact should be some sort of epiphany. It was clear from day one that he was not serious. My hope is the republicans get stuck with Cain just like they got stuck with Michael Steele.
I hope Cain’s poll numbers stays above the remaining republican candidates until it gets very close to them having the nomination. I hope the tea partiers embrace him just like they embraced Sarah Palin. I want it them to be concerned that Cain could end up getting the nomination.
They deserve it.
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Herman KochCain is a sham/scam artist. You know it, I know it, he knows it. As long as he can parlay this into more $$ for himself, he’s good. Just like Gov. Half-term Alaskan Grifter.
That’s why his wife doesn’t appear with him and decided not to do that interview. Why should she bring all that grief on herself. She KNOWS it’s a scam/sham also. She hasn’t worked outside the home in 30+ years. As long as Herman brings in the cash, what else does she care about??
Can someone please tell me how to post that picture of PBO on my desktop??? Pretty please…
I woud love to do the same, desertflower. Pretty, pretty pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.HZ
Good Morning HZ…I just gave Desert instruction in how to set pic below…Try that…and hope it works:-)
Good Morning Kasai, just read what you gave desertflower. I am going to try it. I am not computer savvy, but I will try and try until I get it. Thanks so much Kasai. I am so grateful to you.HZ
Wish I could help you with your desktop pic, desertflower. Actually, I think it would make a great poster, too.
BTW, while I thought RM’s piece on Cain as performance artist was well done, I see it as a distraction, one which is allowing Romney to skate without scrutiny. Yesterday, Romney wrote an op-ed which all but endorsed Paul Ryan’s voucher plan to end Medicare…with his typical wiggle room pandering thrown in. I would much rather see her use her brains, creativity and staff to slam him.
Hi Desert….Try this:
Right Click on the Picture…you will see “Set as Desktop background” click on it…
Hope it works
Hiya desertflower, do you have a PC or a Mac?
I’m not too well up on how to do these things on a PC, but if you have a Mac – just go to this link (best quality version of the photo I could find):
http://mcenter.slideshowpro.com/albums/027/935/album-278456/cache/dp042424.sJPG_900_540_0_95_1_50_50.sJPG?1320514488
and right-click on it. You’ll see the option ‘set as desktop background’. De na!
Bless you, bless you, bless you. It’s raining PBO…Hallelujah!
Amen, Amen, Sue! Hope you are feeling great today, Sue. Continue to send you hugs. I will even get some ice cream for you. Do not tell my doctor, okay.!HZ
My fancy new birthday computer is a PC:) I’ll try what kasai said first……thank you Chips and kasai. will let you know:)
Thanks to both of you for letting me know how to get that beautiful picture on the desktop….not what either one of you said though…had to ask my computer whiz kid how do do it:) no matter HOW he got there, HE’S THERE NOW!! Love it.
Great Desertflorwer. Mine worked. Happy Day, Oh, Happy Day.HZ
works the same way on my PC. RIGHT-CLICK and choose “Set as Desktop Background”
Oh…. BABY!!!! WOOOOOO. New OBAMA PORN!!!
BWAHAHAHAHA 😆
I have a PC and this how I did it. Oh, I also use Firefox if that makes a different. Simply put the arrow on the picture and right click the mouse. A menu will come up and one of the choices will be “Set as Desktop Background” – click that – done. (Oh, you also can choose “center”, “stretch” or “icon”. I chose “center” so it doesn’t cover my entire desktop. “Stretch” made the photo look “stretched”. Of course icon will give you several photos all over your desktop. I chose the “Wet President Obama” (by himself not with GWB) and I chose “center”
Thank you:)
I just posted instructions on the previous thread.
Desertflower and HZ , rightclick on the phot and pick “set as background” in the choices and see if that work. That’s what I normally do.
Chips, Kasai, COS, you all are brilliant and so loving. It is raining POTUS all over my computer!!!!!!! I need to go out now and get some ice cream and come back and help the birthday celebrations move on to the party.
Chips, Kasai, and COS, you all just made this young senior the happiest lady in town today. Rain, Rain,, Rain With Your Fine Self , Mr. President!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love my FLOTUS and Deeply respect her, but my President is Rocking my computer.
Thanks my beautiful TOD family. It worked. I love you all!!!!!! HZ Desertflower, did you get it to work? Happy ladies. I need another order of Mats, Chips. I’ll pay for the overnight shipping, Chips. Love you,HZ
Oh HZ, you are too cute! 😀
Hi GGail, going to be a good girl now.
gosh that 1st picture of Romney is so apropos and priceless
WHY DO THEY HATE US?
Treasonous Republicans Kill Jobs And Betray The American People
============================================
Republicans are traitors. They have spent nearly three years assailing the American people with malice, and their poor, poverty-ridden supporters are complicit in what will prove to be their own demise. Is it entirely because President Obama is African-American? No, it is because Republicans have convinced them that handing over the government to corporations and the wealthy will magically transform them into the wealthy elite who get to run the country. It is astounding that people who are living in poverty support Republicans who are eliminating jobs and it calls into question the intelligence level of half of the country. It is either that or the simple fact that half of the country is as vindictive and evil as their heroes in the Republican Party.
At some point, Americans must look at Republicans and ask themselves; why do they hate us? Republicans do hate 99% of Americans who only want a decent living, a comfortable home, affordable health care, and the ability to prosper in what was the greatest country in the world. President Obama challenged Republicans to explain to the American people why they are blocking job creation efforts at every turn. The President said,” It’s time for Republicans in Congress to put country ahead of party and listen to the people they were elected to serve. It’s time for them to do their job and focus on Americans’ jobs.” The President knows why Republicans are not doing their jobs and why they will never listen to the people who elected them; it is because they hate America and the American people. They are callous, vindictive, and malicious dogs who will not be satisfied until the government is “drowned in a bathtub” so their precious corporations can take over and subjugate the entire population into a life of slavery. They are also traitorous monsters for actively pursuing a course of action to destroy the government; they deserve to be tried, convicted, and sent to federal prison for treason against the American people.

Okay……I’m home. Shut down my laptop and restarted. This site is doing “better” but still slow. This new thread loaded fairly quickly, but tried the last one (rise and shine) and it will NOT load on my laptop OR my iPad. CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!! Let’s hope my laptop keeps doing fairly well.
Beautiful day here in K’town. For 7 hours yesterday and 3 this morning, I attended a WONDERFUL conference downtown: An Untold Story……Celebrating African American Heritage in East Tennessee. There are no words to describe how informative, interesting and uplifting it was. One of my best friends was a co-chair. It was a “WOW” event and don’t know how they will top it next time.
Mitt Romney is so plastic and fake..ugh
Agree, SueBee. I think it would be a hoot if Ken dolls were distributed at the DNC Convention. Prior to the convention, the DNC should hold a contest: “Project Runway Romney” where we produce a “Romney clothing line” documenting his flip-flops and pandering. I can see a collared golf shirt embroidered with “no core Romney”–like a country club logo. How about a blazer with a picture on the back of a retriever in a cage on a car top in a wind tunnel. Anyone else want to play?
I’d send those ideas to Debbie W-S at the DNC! 🙂
Hi, I have just finished changing my word press account over to my new email since our old aol email has been cancelled successfully! I could not retrieve my old forgotten password from word press because my old email account no longer exists. Anyway, I use to go by “m” on here but from now on I will be lovingandlaughing.
Loving lovingandlaughing M!
Thanks chips!
Chips, I realized I had a typo in that username, so I again just changed it! Now it is lovingandlaughing! Sorry for this confusion. It is me “m.”

CONTINGENCY OPERATING BASE ADDER, Iraq – As the number of U.S. troops exiting Iraq increases so has the amount of equipment that has been used to support their efforts here.
As efforts continue with the draw down of Operation New Dawn, massive amounts of materials and equipment have been consolidated, separated, and redistributed through the Material Redistribution Team yard on Contingency Operating Base Adder, Nov. 2.
“We are in the last phases of our clean up of the MRT yard,” said 1st Lt. Matthew D. Roskam, material redistribution team officer-in-charge, 1729th Field Support Maintenance Company, Maryland Army National Guard, from Havre de Grace, Md.
“Basically, everybody’s excess [materials] that’s built up over the past eight to ten years here in Iraq, that’s on nobody’s property books… nobody owns it, comes here,” said Roskam. “We recover it, sort it out by … different demilitarization classes, which says if it’s serviceable, unserviceable, or repairable.”
Materials brought to the yard are unloaded onto the ground and then separated by hand.
“We were non-stop for about three weeks straight,” said Staff Sgt. George E. Adams, non-commissioned officer in charge of safety and the MRT yard, 1729th FSMC, from Reisterstown, Md. “Every tenant on the COB was bringing stuff in. We had companies that were bringing anywhere between four and fifteen flatbeds,” said Adams.
For a time, support from other units to help move the containers was scarce.
“At one point we had a couple of the units supporting us with about eight or nine trucks,” said Adams.
Then it got to the point that the MRT yard had one truck to move everything in the yard and it was running back and forth all night long, with soldiers working around the clock, just to meet the demand, said Adams.
“But we have some dedicated personnel who are hard-working and a great team,” said Adams.
After the excess materials are sorted at the MRT yard they are shipped to a warehouse in Kuwait.

Something is totally “s——” up. When TOD FINALLY loads on my iPad, sometimes it irregular black background;sometimes it is white background with a tiny box for reply. I only got site to load on laptop when I did the comment around 1:17. google Chrome has made changes in their tabs and I have no idea how to “fix” it. Site will NOT open on laptop. 😦
Oh crikey Tnmtngirl, I’m so sorry you’re having all this trouble.
I updated the software on my iPad a few days ago and when I tried to look at the blog (and other sites) on it last night Safari kept crashing, over and over. Between the crashes, though, the blog looked normal, so I honestly haven’t a clue what’s happening there.
Any techy experts out there who can help?
And any Chrome users who can help Tnmtngirl figure this out?
I didn’t update on iPad but I have been getting msg. That safari can’t open. On iPad site goes back and forth between black and white background……when it FINALLY loads at all. On laptop, no problems loading any of my other frequently visited sites……just this one. someone said she is having to login every time to comment. Something crazy going on. I’ve got tons of things to do around house plus calls for my senate candidate to make so “see” y’all later”…..
I love those posters and to think either Ben Smith or Jonathan Martin of Politico did not think that photo would hurt Romney and compared it to a photo taken of David Cameron in England that obviously did not prevent him from being elected. However, in this anti-Wallstreet environment that photo is deadly. It was used in the ad to great effect which is brilliant because most everyone talking is either a right-winger or Romney himself. Also, how dumb can you be to actually say the words “There are a lot of reasons not to elect me,” while trying to convince people to elect you? What a bonehead.

Remember he got bashed in the mouth with a little statue last year?
LOL I guess Scott Walker MIC really got checked…hehehe a thing of beauty LOL!!!
Ouch! Look at all those befuddled old white people! The corporate money privileged that are SHOCKED that we are angry! They’re just pissed that they got found out before their entire plan was carried out. That was awesome.
LOL Desert…they shut him out, he couldn’t even finish…hehehehe
Love that, kasai! Air all that stink out! Fresh air and sunlight is GLORIOUS!!
😆 Desert 😆
Back at you, Fred:) :)! I love that this is happening…
That was awesome.
I’m kicking ass though if any group did that at a Pres. Obama function. A few hecklers are fine but a mic check? oh no.
OK – I’m not a fan of the OWS folks and their anti-Obama message and reluctance to vote or take effective measures to bring about the real change they seek (like supporting the AJA). But I have to admit that this was a priceless piece of real action, talking about real issues, and doing it very effectively. Unfortunately, the fat cats at this event – especially the women at the end with her hands on her hips shouting at the protesters – don’t get it. Well done, OWS. Well done. I just hope they don’t try this stunt at a President Obama event, when he’s open to listening to all voices and he’s one of the only ones who’s been working on behalf of the 99%.
It was perfect, I thought…Look at the glam venue…this rich, isolated, country club going, out of touch bunch thought that they could give some love to Scott Walker….and they got HAD! The woman at the end wagging her finger at the protesters…..I hope she has an epiphany one day soon. That’s the “nice” thing for me to say right now:) Good for those protesters…like a political flash mob….and those in attendance were FORCED to listen. Perfect.
Hm. Kind of interesting to see the comparison between Kerry and Romney, and Bush and Obama – but of course, I’m sure Kerry and Obama deserve better than to be compared to those other two. 😉
At any rate, this is actually unfolding kind of like 1984 unfolded. A President elected four years earlier on a strong base of support to change the country, but faced with high unemployment and other problems. In 1982 Reagan’s party got decimated in the midterms much worse than what we Democrats went through in 2010. In November 1984 unemployment was 7.2% – and Reagan won in a landslide. Hopefully in 2012, unemployment will be closer to 7.2% than 9%.
22 years later here in Michigan, with a dismal economy, Gov. Jennifer Granholm was re-elected with 56% of the vote against a billionaire, in a swing state, with a horrible economy. Obama will have people spending big against him, but he also has a lot more supporters. And while the economy isn’t stellar, there are signs of life. Not sure the same could’ve been said in Michigan in 2006.
Much of what worked for Granholm will also work for Obama – including a feeling that Obama ‘gets it’ while Republicans don’t.
Oh, and Granholm didn’t even find bin Laden.
Nice:) !!
Love it! A respected POTUS (Barack Obama) vs an out of touch billionaire (Flip Flopp Willard). The ads practically write themselves! 🙂
Great analysis Scott…Thanks 🙂
I heard from a conservative Christian, Rush lovin’, old classmate yesterday. He complained that the Dems are blocking job bills that the Repubs are trying to pass to “rebuild this great nation”. Something called the “forgotten 15”. Well, I have been looking for some Republican plan for creating jobs.. Those bills they put out there are all deregulation issues. Bureau of Labor Statistics sez’ regulation is a tiny share of reason business isn’t hiring–lack of demand is main reason. Who is going to manufacture stuff if the middle class doesn’t have the money to buy the damn stuff! Do any of you know if there are some actual Repub bills out there that would actually help this economy. I can’t find them!
“I heard from a conservative Christian, Rush lovin’, old classmate yesterday.”
That should have been your first hint, unless they were talking about the Canadian band Rush 😀
But in all seriousness, Limbaugh’s rants have become so predictable, he’s essentially recycling and repeating them. But as you’ve shown, his listeners who believe his material as gospel have the attention span of a gnat and truly don’t understand how the government works. They truly believe that President Obama and the Democrats are communists/socialists/Marxists what have you, and how dare they pick on Limbaugh for exposing the truth! 🙄
From what I read, he’s been losing a lot of his core listeners for a while, just like Glenn Beck was losing viewers on Fox. It’s wishful thinking that Clear Channel will fire Limbaugh, because of all the revenue he brings them, not to mention Limbaugh would refuse to leave anyways, given his huge ego. But I bet Limbaugh would blame his losing listeners on our President and the eeeevil librul media… you know, that librul media that is ABSOLUTELY loving Herman Cain, all while bashing our President 😉

GOP “Jobs” Bills: The Faux 15
========================
http://www.democraticleader.gov/blog/?p=4533
Putting Millionaires Before Jobs
=========================
A competing Republican bill, which also failed on Thursday, was cobbled together in an attempt to make it appear as if the party has equally valid ideas on job creation and rebuilding. It would have extended the existing highway and public transportation financing for two years, paying for it with a $40 billion cut to other domestic programs. Republican senators also threw in a provision that would block the Environmental Protection Agency from issuing new clean air rules. Only in the fevered dreams of corporate polluters could that help create jobs.
Mitch McConnell, the Senate Republican leader, bitterly accused Democrats of designing their infrastructure bill to fail by paying for it with a millionaire’s tax, as if his party’s intransigence was so indomitable that daring to challenge it is somehow underhanded.
The only good news is that the Democrats aren’t going to stop. There are many more jobs bills to come, including extension of unemployment insurance and the payroll-tax cut. If Republicans are so proud of blocking all progress, they will have to keep doing it over and over again, testing the patience of American voters.

Newspapers Call Out the ‘No Jobs’ GOP
http://www.democraticleader.gov/blog/?p=4515#more-4515
Your friend is being shamelessly lied to, Auni. It’s too bad they’re brainwashed with lies or they might see that it’s the Dems who are trying to rebuild our Nation.
A Republican jobs bill is as mythical as a unicorn. In fact, you might find a unicorn before you find a Republican jobs bill that would help the economy.
Also, ask you friend to use his common sense and ask himself why would PBO and Democrats block jobs bills when the election could be decided on that very issue.
Please ask your friend to pressure the Republicans to get their jobs bills assessed by independent economists, like the President asked the media to do several weeks ago. The so-called “forgotten 15” will destroy jobs, not create jobs. And economists agree. The White House put out a comparison just the other day, because the lazy media won’t do their jobs and compare the bills. Your friend should know that if those 15 jobs are enacted, they will result in the end of the EPA, more oil being produced and sold on the international market (with little benefit to the US), and free reign for bankers to redo the financial collapse of 2007/2008 – which could endanger his own job. There is nothing in those bills that will “rebuild this great nation”, and everything in those bills that will harm him, his children and his fellow country men and women.

PHILADELPHIA === IN THE HOUSE!!!!! Yeah, baby!!! And while these folks were protesting Mitt Romney, some OFA volunteers were canvassing neighborhoods and reminding folks that we have a local election this Tues., Nov 8th, re-electing Phila Mayor Nutter and electing reasonable judges statewide.
IF you ever want to get out of the house and IGNORE THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA, call your local Organizing for America (OFA ) or check out BarackObama.com to volunteer for an event near you. Make phone calls. Walk around your neighborhood and knock on doors,
HAVE CONVERSATIONS WITH REAL PEOPLE . It definitely will renew your faith in support for Pres. Barack Obama.
We had a blast today!!! One of my good friends and I walked a turf pack. She with her 15 yr old niece and me with my 14 yr old son. A brisk, sunny fall day. A perfect day to get teenagers away from the computers and us “old folks” up off our butts!!! Folks had engaging conversation for us, Got a few leaners to check out “Attack Watch ” and, of course, I mentioned “The Obama Diary”
That is wonderful encouragement isonprize. I am so glad you did that today. thank you for your work and for being a role model for teens.
By the way, the site on my iPad screen currently does not seem to be letting me log in right now do I have no idea if this will come up as A comment from my old user name of “m” “my new user name as “lovingandlaughing” or as someone not logged in!
Oh man….now the spot to log in popped up after the comment went through. I just checked for the site to remember me with the new username so hopefully I will not have this silly back and forth of usernames going on anymore. I am a Gemini, but this is just silly!
Testing….I can’t figure out why it is still listing me as “m!” maybe this one will work.
