Steve Benen: ….. “It’s safe to say Speaker John Boehner does not agree with President Obama’s suggestion on Tuesday that Americans are better off now than they were when he took office. “Are you kidding me?!” Boehner said loudly in response to a reporter’s question on the comment.”

…. Obviously, national conditions aren’t close to where they need to be. …. Maybe, if guys like Boehner would start passing jobs bills and stop holding the economy back on purpose, the public would start to feel like the country is on the right track again.

But for those who take reality seriously, there’s no real question as to whether the country is better off now than in January 2009:

Then the nation was hemorrhaging jobs; now it’s gaining jobs.

Then the economy was shrinking; now the economy is growing.

Then the American automotive industry was on the verge of collapse; now it’s starting to thrive.

Then taxpayers were sending money to Wall Street; now taxpayers are being paid back.

Then Osama bin Laden was targeting Americans and our allies; now he’s dead and al Qaeda’s leadership has been decimated.

Then U.S. troops were headed into the Middle East in greater numbers; now they’re headed home with their heads held high.

Republicans, including John Boehner, drove the United States into a pretty deep ditch during the Bush/Cheney era, and conditions are still pretty ugly. That doesn’t change the simple fact that the nation is much stronger now than the day the president was inaugurated ….

The GOP’s racial confusion:

The Week

AP: A third former employee considered filing a workplace complaint against Herman Cain over what she deemed aggressive and unwanted behavior when she and Cain, now a Republican presidential candidate, worked together during the late 1990s, the woman told The Associated Press on Wednesday. She said the behavior included a private invitation to his corporate apartment.

The woman said he made sexually suggestive remarks or gestures about the same time that two co-workers had settled separate harassment complaints against Cain, who was then the head of the National Restaurant Association.

Washington Post: Car buyers were out in force in October, snapping up trucks and SUVs and taking advantage of deals on Japanese cars.

U.S. car and truck sales were expected to top 1 million in October, a surprising number for a month when sales are usually slow. When adjusted for seasonal factors, that would be the best pace since the Cash for Clunkers program in August 2009.

Mediaite: In a Quinnipiac poll taken Oct. 25-31, embattled GOP juggernaut Herman Cain continued to show amazing staying power …. (but) The real news from this poll, taken before most of the fallout from Politico‘s alleged sexual harassment expose, might be that some rays of sunshine are finally hitting President Obama.

….. President Obama gained six points on his approval rating … and is now beating all Republican challengers by margins of 5-16 points. The President has seen steady progress in the polls since rolling out his American Jobs Act in September, taking it on the road, and taking the fight to the Republicans who oppose it.

Elsewhere in the poll, Democrats opened up a lead on the generic House ballot, beating Republicans 42-36, after tying them at 39 in October.

Also, the President is up to 45% approval with Gallup today – that’s a rise of seven points in two weeks 😉

AP: Michelle Obama has presented national arts and humanities awards to 12 community-based, after-school programs, including for at-risk kids.

The programs use dance, theater, writing, music, history and other art mediums to inspire teen moms and other young people and help them reach their potential. The first lady said at a White House ceremony Wednesday that the programs show that the arts are a lifeline – not a luxury – for many of these kids.

Most of the participants graduate from high school or earn a GED and go on to college.

The 2011 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards are presented on behalf of the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities in partnership with three national cultural agencies.

Really wonderful pictures, Tien Le! Finally, this misguided war is coming to a closure. Despite the blunders of the people in government who sent them there, these brave men and women in the military have performed heroically. The President should proclaim a day of thanksgiving, as well as a day to remember the precious lives lost, for the million troops, and their families, who served in Iraq.

It’s funny to watch the GOP self implode. Cain accuses Perry of sabotaging him. Perry says it’s Romney. Romney fires back. BWAHAHA……intra-party cannibalism is F-U-N 😆

Now 538’s Nate Silver just tweeted that there’s word on the street sarah palin is hinting that she might join the #GOPClown race.

The GOP must be pretty desperate right about now.

    • November 2, 2011 at 6:59 pm

But I thought her family and God told her to stay out of the race. Did God changer Her mind? Does the family need her to run to grift some more money? Sure as hell the country wants nothing to do with her. Man, maybe it’s the Santa Ana winds we have today in SoCal, but I’m feeling absolutely giddy.

        November 3, 2011 at 3:20 am

“Did God changer Her mind?” Apparently! Isn’t it amazing how God is so intimately involved in the teabag-Republican presidential politics. The question is: who of the Republican candidates that have invoked God would finally get the nod from God? Will it be Bachmann, or Perry? Or is God now changing his mind and going with Sarah Palin? By the way, I may have missed it, but do the other GOP candidates like Romney, Cain, Gingrich, Paul, Santorum and Huntsman think that God has also chosen them to run for President? If not, how do they think they have a chance of defeating candidates anointed by God? I tell you I never thought I would live long enough to witness a time when our presidential candidates claimed Divine mandate to run for President. If we do elect a president who claims to derive his/her ideas from God, what safeguards do we have to prevent our country from returning to the era of Divine Kingship? Or shall I say “Divine Presidency?”

Madre De Dios! Can’t that woman just stay home and take care of her youngest child? Children with Downs Syndrome require special care, attention and lots of love to thrive. Who is caring for this nino while she pimps herself? How could anyone consider this sorry excuse of mutant DNA competent to run for any public office?

    • November 2, 2011 at 10:08 pm

I heard this today from another source. Palin is hurting because no one is paying attention to her anymore and her contract with Fox dries up in January, along with the income. I think she sees a lot of imploding going on among the R’s(especially her nemesis Michele) and thinks she can get in in a “rogue” kind of way, get some limelight again, pump up her Pac and get the money flowing once more. She will add a whole new level of absurdity to the process, since she’s like all the Three Stooges rolled into one hot mess.

She also is giving a speech tomorrow night at some Republican shindig at Disney World. The event is not sold out, she has not been getting any media attention as of late which is a tough pill for a narcissist to swallow. I suspect she is trying to stir up the MSM interest as well as wring some more dollars from her desperate followers, all 4500 of them. If there is one thing she is good at it’s grifting.

I can not stand her, so even the suggestion of her entering the race makes my skin crawl. But I’m sure the MSM will go right back to whipping up the hype and hysteria. It’s all a circus act.

Yea right! Then how come he has appointed two women to the United States Supreme Court? How come he has four women in major cabinet positions: SoS, Hillary Clinton; SoHS, Janet Napolitano, SoHHS , Katherine Sebellious, (sp) and, SoL, Hilda Solis (sp)? And, Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice. How is that for a record of a president who doesn’t like women? Sometimes I think I am really loosing my mind when I just can’t figure out why these Obama haters think we are all idiots! I keep asking myself: What exactly Am I missing from this picture? How can any one be taken seriously when he accuses the President of not liking women, when in just one term he appointed two women to the Supreme Court, which is a record? and has appointed four (five if you include the U.N. Ambassador) in major cabinet posts? Something has gone terribly wrong with the critical thinking of Americans who buy into these people peddling nonsense and manufactured lies in order to sell books.

Here is a French news station:

    http://wwitv.com/tv_channels/b2742.htm

There is no livestream on the G20 website.

    • November 2, 2011 at 8:02 pm

The general agenda from Ben Rhodes. No specific times.

We’ll be leaving here Wednesday night to fly to France. After we arrive, we’ll have two bilateral meetings in the morning, first with President Sarkozy of France, and then with Chancellor Merkel of Germany. These are obviously the two largest economies in the eurozone and two leaders that the President has been in very close contact with over the last weeks and months about the issues that will be discussed at the G20 and about the situation in the eurozone. So these will be important meetings for him to have consultations with these leaders before the G20 commences. And Mike and Lael can speak a little bit more about those issues.

Following those meetings he will also have a meeting with the L20, the international labor leaders who will be in Cannes as a part of the G20 program. And then that afternoon we head directly into the G20 schedule. And the G20 schedule for that afternoon includes a working lunch and then a number of sessions and a working dinner. So the rest of the day on Thursday will be taken up with the G20 schedule.

Then Friday morning, we will complete the G20 with a number of sessions in the morning and early afternoon. Following the conclusion of the G20, the President will be able to meet with President Kirchner of Argentina. She was recently reelected, as you may know, and this is an important opportunity for the U.S. and Argentina to discuss our relationship going forward and to congratulate her on her reelection.

Following that meeting, the President will have a press conference, as he usually does at the end of the G20. And then we may have additional opportunities to spend some time with President Sarkozy. We’re working that out as well.

If there are additional meetings that emerge on the margins of the G20, we’ll, of course, let you know about them either before or during the sessions. The President often has opportunities to speak to his counterparts at these summits.

  21. November 2, 2011 at 8:12 pm

They are of course ON IT:

Obama general counsel Bob Bauer emails lawyers and law students that the campaign is setting up an “unprecedented” new “voter protection” program — a standard feature of Democratic campaigns, but given the general enthusiasm for Obama, and the specific enthusiasm (according to my anecdotal sense) among legal types, probably on a very large scale.

Yep! This reminds me of my silent thoughts weeks ago when TOD was discussing ‘fat’ in relation to a governor who shall be nameless right now. At the time I thought of a few fat people I knew who were such positive/charming spirits that their weight was never really the first thing you saw, in fact it rarely registered negatively. In contrast with that Republican radio ‘star’ and that governor whose weight strikes you negatively because their attitudes, etc are so negative.

I had no idea that his daughter Caroline Matthew worked as an intern with the Obama administration.

        Here’s the article I found:

Twenty-one-year-old Caroline Matthews, daughter of “Hardball” host Chris Matthews, is focusing her summer on the national debt. She’s an intern for President Obama’s federal deficit commission and, this week, she’s biking from Philadelphia to Washington to “break the debt cycle” for an organization she helped found, Concerned Youth of America.

Ishmael Reed in his book “Barack Obama and the Jim Crow Media, The Return of the Nigger Breakers” predicted that more and more we would see the white right and white left coalesce, because of their exclusionary habit of ignoring African Americans and Latinos, domination by an Anglo-Protestant culture, in short racism. He called out all the usual subjects, Jane Hamsher aligning with Grover Norquist, the bombast of Ed Schultz, Chris Matthews, the list goes on. He calls it ‘Negro Mania’, says it will increase throughout the Obama administration and strongly suggests it is the media spreading hysteria for profit. Although the book is very good, and supports what most of his here have already premised, it was gut wrenching and dispiriting to read.

I know why I hate the F’n media so much!

Who is Vanden Huevel and what’s her claim to fame (i.e. what are her credentials)? What makes so many of these people feel more qualified than you or I to discuss the president? 😦

      • November 2, 2011 at 11:52 pm

Just in case you were really asking, from HoosLeft:

“Poor little rich girl Katrina. Heiress to the MCA fortune and granddaughter of a mogul who relentlessly exploited African American singers for his own profit. Mouths platitudes about “the poor” but doesn’t really know any poor people at all. By speaking of them, she’s accomplished a goal. Everything she’s ever achieved in life, she’ either bought for herself or had bought for her, courtesy of a platinum AmEx card. A living embodiment of Oscar Wilde’s precept of someone who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.”

I suppose he also thinks that if you are sexually harrassed “it’s your own damn fault.” Misogynist.

    End of the Reagan Narrative?

    =======================

Exclusive: Election 2012 may turn on whether Ronald Reagan’s narrative of evil government and beneficent tax cuts for the rich has finally run its course – and has been replaced by a new narrative demanding government intervention to save the American middle-class, writes Robert Parry.

Wow – Not sure I wanna view that video, but is that Manchin standing behind LaHood in the infrastructure piece freeze frame? Manchin is on the same page as President Obama for a change?

Yes, according to the video. The message was stop the politics, infrastructure is a non partisan issue. And our infrastructure is crumbling, which is not only unsafe, it is a drain on the economy.

A little OT, but I love that Rev. Al, Rachel and Ed played the part of PBO’s speech where he called out the repugs for voting on the baseball commemorative and the reaffirmation of “In God We Trust”. In the past, repugs did this stuff under the radar and the average citizen was not aware. Most of the people at PBO’s rally today probably did not know about this but they know now and they will spread the word to other friends. PBO is so clever.

On the PBS News Hour cain once again showed a lack of foreign policy understanding when asked by host Judy Woodruff about China.

“Yes, they’re a military threat, they’ve indicated that they’re trying to develop nuclear capabilities, so yes, we have to consider them a military threat,” he said.

China has had nuclear weapons since 1964.

I know that Herman Cain is currently getting his karma as we speak, but I’d like nothing more than to see him continue on as the republican frontrunner if only to watch the implosion and ballistic action of people like Joe Scarborough. I thought he was going to have a heart attack this morning on Morning Joe when they were discussing Herman Cain harassment charges and the recent polls that had him ahead of Mitt Romney. Guys, they are getting scared. The republican rank and file like Joe Scarborough are afraid the Cain might snatch the republican nomination away from their golden boy Mitt Romney. Joe was going crazy this morning, and if you guys get a chance to watch it, please do so. I was laughing my ass off. They’ve created a monster, and they don’t know it yet. This is what happen when you play games with people’s lives. Don’t be surprised if Herman Cain survives this scandal, and continues to rise in the poll. There are many republicans that are getting behind Cain not because they are crazy about him but because they hate Mitt Romney so much. Fasten your seat belt guys because it’s going to be a bumpy ride to the republican nomination, and I am going to love watching them destroy each other. God has a wicked sense of humor, and I would love nothing more than to watch the racist teabaggers have to choose between two black men in the general election ( I know is wishful thinking on my part, but a girl can dream…). It would be Alan Keyes 2.0 all over again.

This is a great chat! But seriously folks, at this stage do WHATEVER YOU CAN DO between now and Election Day 2012 to hire people and stimulate the economy. I KNOW many of us can’t do that. BUT A LOT OF US CAN!!!

“We have nothing to fear – – but fear itself!” That has been a HUGE factor in our slow recovery.

“UNCERTAINTY” AS A RESULT OF REGULATION OR TAX POLICY IS PURE CONCOCTED CRAP!!!

NONE, ZERO, ZILCH of the business people I work with EVER mention taxes or regulation. It’s demand that worries them, along with the general unease fueled by the gloom ‘n’ doom of the incessant media cycle.

Dave, I agree. If you’ve got it, spend it. And spend it in small local businesses where it will have the greatest effect. I’m certainly not rolling in dough but have decided to spend what I do have rather than save for the next year. Can’t save the economy by myself but if enough others do it we can have an effect. I’m not advocating going into debt but I’ll be doing what I can to stimulate this economy. I’m not in a position to hire others but I can keep the hair salon busy. Buy American if possible.
I have hesitated to say this because there are so many people out of work and I didn’t want to be insensitive. But the economy grows when we all jump in together and let the moths fly out of the wallets.
Of course there are people who just can’t afford it right now (I’ve been there in the past, so please don’t be offended).
