rise and shine

Steve Benen: …. Keep in mind, the GOP’s filibuster last night was on the motion to proceed – they blocked the Senate’s ability to even discuss the jobs bill.

How many Republicans broke ranks and agreed that the proposal deserved an up-or-down vote? Zero. Not even one alleged “moderate” mustered the courage to give a wildly popular jobs bill a chance to get a vote.

Three conservative members of the Democratic caucus – Ben Nelson, Joe Lieberman, and Mark Pryor – sided with Republicans.

The outcome didn’t come as a surprise, which is probably why it isn’t a bigger story in the media, but that shouldn’t make the developments any less scandalous….

Statement from President Obama on the Senate vote on teacher and first responder jobs:

“For the second time in two weeks, every single Republican in the United States Senate has chosen to obstruct a bill that would create jobs and get our economy going again. That’s unacceptable. We must do what’s right for the country and pass the common-sense proposals in the American Jobs Act.

Every Senate Republican voted to block a bill that would help middle class families and keep hundreds of thousands of firefighters on the job, police officers on the streets, and teachers in the classroom when our kids need them most.

Those Americans deserve an explanation as to why they don’t deserve those jobs – and every American deserves an explanation as to why Republicans refuse to step up to the plate and do what’s necessary to create jobs and grow the economy right now.

We must rebuild the economy the American way and restore security for the middle class, based on the values of balance and fairness. Independent economists have said the American Jobs Act could create up to two million jobs next year. So the choice is clear.

Our fight isn’t over. We will keep working with Congress to bring up the American Jobs Act piece by piece, and give Republicans another chance to put country before party and help us put the American people back to work.”

Did you all get that email from Jim Messina the other day titled ‘2,644 people named Joyce’?

Well, very oddly, when I’ve logged in to barackobama.com recently my name has come up as Joyce Daniels – and I’m not Joyce Daniels! I’m not any kind of Joyce at all!

This happened me before, a couple of months back, when the site told me I was Barbara (can’t remember surname) – I emailed them about it, but never heard back.

Is any one else having these problems?? I’m mystified!

miliawahoo76: When two esteemed and respected journalists members of the Professional Left decided to make a fashion statement foray amongst the protesters on Wall Street recently, they were surprised at the reception they received. They were served with a healthy helping of hot home truths, and – like all of their ilk – they turned and fled.

You don’t get two bigger mouths (or asses) than Dylan Ratigan and Cenk Uygur…..

…. notice former corporate lawyer and recent Republican convert Cenk Uygur – you know, the one who calls the President a moron. Cenk just “happens” to be there, decked out in his Young Turks teeshirt, obviously advertising his new show on Current. Cenk’s the one, who – when the gentleman’s protest was getting too loud – condescendingly pursed his lips and shushed him, in such a way as an adult might shush a child or a pet…..

Rubio’s website

I had a link to the Washington Post’s story on Marco Rubio in last night’s wrap-up, but here’s more from Steve Benen:

… Even this morning, more than 12 hours after the Washington Post first broke the news that Rubio’s family history is not what he says it is, the senator’s office hasn’t bothered to correct his online biography. The second sentence, as I type, reads, “In 1971, Marco was born in Miami to Cuban-born parents who came to America following Fidel Castro’s takeover.”

Unless Rubio believes 1956 follows 1959, that’s plainly not true. To publish a falsehood is a problem. To leave the falsehood uncorrected after it’s been exposed is brazen….

    Good morning! And…

    By John T. Bennett – 10/21/11 08:15 AM ET
The NATO-led military intervention in Libya is headed for a close, according to the alliance’s top general.

About 24 hours after reports began to surface of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi’s capture and death, U.S. Adm. James Stavridis took to social media to announce the military portion of the mission likely would soon be over.

“An extraordinary 24 hours in Libya. As SACEUR, I will be recommending conclusion of this mission to the North Atlantic Council of NATO in a few hours,” Stavridis wrote on his Facebook page, using shorthand for his NATO title of supreme allied commander-Europe.

“A good day for NATO,” wrote Stavridis, also U.S. European Command chief, and one of the American military’s rising stars. “A great day for the people of Libya.”
President Obama on Thursday also suggested the NATO mission would end soon by saying the U.S. mission would soon be over.

Only a handful of Gadhafi-loyalist fighters remain on the offensive in Libya, according to regional media.

Now, I gotta gotta go play all these videos chip gave us.

I guess President Obama is given more opportunities to go before the American people to talk about the jobs bill.

Another opportunity for the American people to know how far some folk are willing to take this country to the brink. It seems as though we are slowly becoming a third world country where Congress does not care about teachers, fire fighters and law enforcement.

As long as a majority of us keep pressing on our work is not in vain. It can turn around. Keep the faith.

    • October 21, 2011 at 8:50 am

The day after the Senate blocked passage of one component of President Obama’s jobs bill on Thursday, the president’s top economic adviser is airing his grievances against Republicans to the pages of the Wall Street Journal.

“We are disappointed that Republicans have so far blocked passage of the American Jobs Act,” Gene Sperling wrote in an op-ed on Friday. “Yet what is most surprising and disturbing is that Republicans have thus far made no serious attempt to put forward a strategy that would ensure that growth is strong enough over the next 12 to 18 months to start bringing the unemployment rate down.”

The director of the National Economic Council accused the GOP of having “repackaged” a number of long-term measures, then proceeding to stick a “’jobs plan’ label” on them. These provisions are “not designed to create jobs in the immediate term or to address the current crisis of long-term unemployment,” he said.

Sperling added, “This aversion to measures designed to move the needle on jobs and growth is particularly disappointing given that many Republicans supported them only a short time ago.”

He accused Republicans of turning good ideas into bad ideas “solely because President Obama supports them.”

“Our economy cannot afford Republicans to both say no to the American Jobs Act and to have no meaningful alternative. The moment is too serious. The stakes are too high,” he said.

I’m not discouraged. The media is getting more and vicious (along with the Repubs) because they are getting more and more desperate. With Qaddafi’s defeat yesterday, that just about did them in for the remainder of this year. They are not going to allow what they perceive to be a “win” for this President if they can help it.

One thing I’ve noticed is that more and more people are now observing that this President does a superior job when he is not hamstrung by congress and/or the media. That will become even clearer in the months to come.

We can’t afford to become hopeless or get down. Believe me the battle is not over . If you are fired and ready to go, then I say remain strong, keep the faith. OBAMA/BIDEN 2012

We’ve been fighting the Republicans for 3 years. Almost every accomplishment of this administration has been a fight. Yet as they say, “hard trials strengthen”. We will feel like Hercules when this is over. It’s going to get even tougher over the next 12 months so be prepared. We’re going to win this fight.

      • October 21, 2011 at 12:54 pm

Sukey, don’t be discouraged. I know it is difficult sometimes not to feel down over the obstruction and vitriol from the republicans but we have the most amazing president in the oval office and he has a fantastic bunch of people campaigning for him. We all have his back and we will all fight for him no matter what the other side do we will fight back. I understand your frustrations, it is so natural to feel that way and we all care and want the same thing – PBO re-elected next year. More and more people are seeing the media for what it is and less have trust in them.
Keep the faith Sukey, we are all with you and support you. Love ya.

      • October 21, 2011 at 12:57 pm

Sukey I don’t mean to FLAME or be mean, but please don’t feel discouraged. We are getting the Teapublicans best shot. They want Obama supporters and independents to feel hopeless and powerless. Of course I can’t control your feelings, but you can’t let this get you down. In order to win in November of 2012 we have to remain strong throughout. This is just the beginning girl. We have a whole year of fierce resistance and hate. The established “Good Ole Boy” network is petrified of Pres. Obama. They see where he plays a different game and they want him out.

Stay strong. We can only be victorious if we PRESS ON and persevere. This is just a bump in the road to inauguration night January 2013! 😀

I thought it was closer to neutral than most things we read and drilled down to what it’s all about. The Hooded Claw McConnell and Johnny Orange should be called daily and asked, “where are the jobs you promised?”

So it’s possible that there is some error in the name associated with your portal – but you should definitely look into it.

  7. October 21, 2011 at 9:11 am

I just e-mailed McConnell to say that with each “no” vote he makes the president more sympathetic to the American people and himself more reviled. Told him his no vote inspired me to give more to the Obama/Biden campaign and then went and added to Chip’s campaign total. I would love them to get the idea that their votes increase the president’s campaign chest. Told McConnell he was helping with the president’s re-election. Then tweeted that twit Cantor and told him the same. I saw on the lead Balloon Juice story that reporters were finally getting the story straight about this being Republican obstructionism, which the Ed clip helps reinforce. This is good–no more “both sides at fault” nonsense, despite losers like Nelson.

The Republicans are too obvious now. They’re are so desperate to destroy the president, so inflated by their own egos and so flush with Koch Brothers cash, that they are forgetting to be subtle. When they drop the mask and reveal their ugliness this openly, people get repelled as you see in the rising poll numbers on Democratic positions. They are making the president angry and they are making people angry and their over-bloated arrogance is making them forget the consequences of public wrath. Yes, there may be stringent voter suppression tactics in place and yes they are going to nightmares to overcome, but the R’s are putting their thumbs on the scale in too obvious a fashion and at some point, the frustration people feel is going to blow.

Our job is to continue to grow the re-election war chest; set the story straight for anyone who tries to blame the “federal government” as a whole, and get people to vote, vote, vote. I talked to our local OFA rep about promoting the Occupy a Voting Booth theme next year and he was very receptive to taking this idea up the ladder. Don’t despair; get busy.

Good for you! I wanna see McConnell looking all ashen and shaken like he did around the time of the healthcare vote. So the jobs bill is broken down into pieces that the Rs spit out one by one. At some point, their boy Luntz will have to give them some palatable language for their vote on *something* or they will continue to look like their heels are so dug in that they’re set in concrete. Starting with the most critical jobs was important.

Cracks are already beginning to appear in McConnell’s so-called calm facade. TPM reported yesterday that he released a bit of truth this week when he got angry and said that PBO got everything he wanted, but he forgot to raise taxes. This is an admission that the republicans have been lying about unprecedented tax increases under PBO. There have been none. McConnell knows it, and he got just mad enough to admit it.

Cenk and Ratigan came down to OWS thinking they would get a heroes welcomes but a smart guy called out Ratigan for the fraud he is. Cenk tried to shush the guy up (by the way Cenk was wearing his Young Turks shirt; shameless promoting 🙄 ) but they guy kept calling ratigan a liar. He said – truthfully – that ratigan was part of wall street, he worked for CNBC and Bloomberg News and was deep in the pocket of wall street. Now ratigan is trying to pretend that he’s one of the 99% and trying to pretend that he never had ties to Wall Street. When the guy called him out, Ratigan walked away in a huff like the coward he is.

        • October 21, 2011 at 1:59 pm

I hope Randi Rhodes sees this video. She’s been puffing up Ratigan like he really is interested in helping the 99%, and even giving Cenk a platform on her show. Never revealing that Ratigan was part of the network that built up the lies that allowed Wall Street to sell the toxic assets to unsuspecting investors, or that he’s been a tool for Wall Street right up until the time he joined MSNBC. And never revealing the despicable and insulting (and blatantly racist) language that both Cenk and Ratigan have used against President Obama.

    • 76 jacquelineoboomer

Hi, COS – First, I’d say jealousy. People want his life, his job, his charisma, his intelligence. Ha ha – no can do, Republicans and corporate media!

Second, the media has no idea what the important topics of the day are, to the American people. Don’t know and don’t want to know.

      My take!

    • October 21, 2011 at 10:59 am

They are trying to undermine him but the open transparency with which he runs his fundraising operation gives them no traction whatsoever. If they think his supporters – grassroots, orgs, high-tech, those with fame and fortune – are going to sit idly by while the GOP stacks up their money from their SuperPac fiascos, they’re crazy. The MSM don’t understand how PBO manages to do it ALL, so they are spinning their wheels furiously. And they look like utter fools doing it.

    • 82 utaustinliberal
      October 21, 2011 at 11:06 am

I also saw the hit piece on MSNBC too COS. It was Chris Jansing and some pundit from Variety who were discussing in uncomfortable detail the varying prices of PBO’s fundraisers. How it ranges from about $500 for working professionals to about $35,800 for people who can afford it and want to donate the max. They were trying to make the upcoming fundraiser at Melanie Griffiths and Antonio Banderas’s home as a way to appease and beg Latino Voters to come back into the fold and love PBO. They made it sound as though PBO has huge disapproval numbers in the Latino community; which is an outright lie. They never talk about the republicans fundraising efforts or suggest that they’re pandering to various groups. They only level that accusation at PBO. It was a very uncomfortable and irrelevant segment.

I’m really disappointed in Al Gore. He, of all people, should know what it’s like to be smeared by lies. Has anyone contacted him about hiring Cenk who calls our President names like “moron”?

The GOP and much of the MSM have been promoting lies and distortion. The thing to remember is that they have chosen that path and they just keep going farther and farther on it. The rest of the US has been hearing facts, hearing PBO’s speeches and living in the real world. The disconnect is getting bigger and bigger. The same thing happens when you have two tectonic plates going in different directions — at some point it has to give. They really can’t keep living in an unreal world forever and be in power. I was looking through some old newspapers I kept from the 1960’s and saw a piece by Strom Thurmond that could have been by a teabagger. We aren’t going to get rid of that viewpoint or those people and we don’t need to. We just need to keep on standing firm on our point of view and working for the President. Once people discover the facts and it doesn’t fit in the BS they’ve been fed, then they start questioning all of it.

The other thing is that our continued love and appreciation of the President and his administration shines through every conversation we have and every person we meet. The President knew that when he was running for office — he knew the power of people connecting with others. So the most powerful things we can do is just be who we are and let other people know what we think. The tweets, the emails, the conversations, volunteering for OFA are all powerful. You have one vote, but you have the power to influence many others. When I hear someone criticize the President, I just smile and say with appreciation, “I just love that man” and I tell them some of the reasons why. They looked shocked. I know it rocks their world a little bit in a very good way. Like ripples on a pond — I see the good thoughts and appreciation going out into the world.

I love Nancy Pelosi! I received an email from Leader Pelosie and the DCCC this morning about their progress to take back the House:

    [quote[ It’s game time.

Just over two weeks from now, we’ll be one year out from the 2012 election. The choices we make today will help determine how many Tea Party Republicans we can afford to target for defeat in 2012.

We have recruited a groundbreaking 60 Democratic candidates to compete in Republican-held or open seats. Many of these districts are held by Republicans who voted to destroy Medicare to fund tax cuts for Big Oil and Billionaires.

With just 25 Republican-held seats between us and a Democratic Majority this achievement represents a giant step down the path to victory in 2012.

But our candidates are already under attack from the radical right, and it’s only going to get worse. They must have the resources they need to fight back….

I have set a goal of recruiting 600 new Victory Partners in the next 24-hours — ten for each Democratic Challenger — to show our candidates that grassroots Democrats are ready to stand with them and hold Tea Party Republicans accountable every step of the way through the 2012 election.

    Hello Friends
I am probably the only one who feels so strongly about this (without reading this whole blog) but I was shocked to see Cornell West included. I turned my channel because I see these invitations as validations of him nonsense. His attacks on PBO even if tampered down now still sting.

Hi smilingl8dy, what are you referring to when you say “Cornel West included” – where was he include?

I agree with you that he’s a first class jerk.
