day two, on the road – afternoon

President Obama talks on the phone as he greets people outside the Reid’s House Restaurant in Reidsville, N.C.

Pool report (thanks Jovie): …. For lunch on Tuesday, President Obama and his entourage stopped at Reid’s House Restaurant in Reidsville, N.C…..

….Outside of Reid’s, Obama emerged carrying a plastic bag stuffed with styrofoam food containers and worked the ropeline. He dispensed hugs, talked Panthers football, his shoes – and he talked to grandma.

Laketta Hussain, a 33 year-old from Eden, N.C. was on her cell phone as the president approached. Hussain told Obama she worked in weatherization and held out her phone, “My grandma says hi, too,” she told him.

“Hey grandma,” Obama said, taking the phone. He pulled it away to examine it. “This is an old style phone, though,” he said, holding it out for everyone to see. The pool report said it looked like a cordless phone. “I haven’t seen these in a while.”

“Alright. Grandma?” POTUS said, with the big phone back to his ear. Then he proceeded to talk to grandma.

“I appreciate you. How you been doing? You doing good? … OK. I’m doing good too. Except your granddaughter needs a new cell phone. She’s got one of these big old ones,” he said. “Ok. Alright. I’ll talk to you.” And he handed the phone back to Hussain, who told her grandma, “I had to do it.”

There were some excited women along the ropeline. “Oh my God,” one of them said to Obama, throwing her hands above her head. “I love you.”

“Well, you get a hug for that,” the president said. A woman he had passed by earlier with a handshake said she wanted a hug, too. “What about my hug?” she demanded.

Carl Schmuhl, 36, told Obama he works at Miller-Coors, a brewery in Eden. “You got some samples?” POTUS asked.

Briefing reporters in the pool van, White House press secretary Jay Carney confirmed the obvious – Obama is “clearly enjoying himself,” he said.

Students react after one of them asked President Obama if he knew singer Justin Bieber during his visit to Bluestone High School in Skipwith.

“Do you know Justin Bieber?” a girl standing in front of him piped up.

Mr. Obama, amused, said he does know Mr. Bieber and he’s a “very nice young man.”

“But,” he added, “I think he’s got a girlfriend.”

Oh so now Landler changes his tune?. i bet our collective tweet bombs shook him up this morning. Mofo!!

Oh no that asswipe didn’t..I was just wondering aloud what Landler would have to say about the pool report that said the Pres was greeted enthusiastically by the crowd. And I don’t think this is mentioned enough—this is not some liberal enclave, these are staunchly republican towns the pres is going to. But of course he does not credit for that.

        • October 18, 2011 at 4:48 pm

Excellent point LOL. Many of these places are deep red but their enthusiasm and outpouring of affection is rivaling anything in blue states. You watch the local news clips and everyone including the local reporters are caught up in the excitement.

Exactly. At the end of the day people are people and they all want the same thing. If you show that you are genuinely interested in their welfare, they will respond. Not only do they get to see the President first hand, but their local businesses and rural areas benefit economically and otherwise from these bus stops.

It’s a childish reaction from John McCain. He’s about eighty years old, and when you get that age you start to act like a child again. There is another bus like that one waiting for the Republican nominee. Is this what our so call leaders have become? The Democratic party is not perfect, but these Republicans are sick bastards.

McCain is so the past. he is still mad because he lost so bad and PBO made looked so out of touch
on the 3 debates they had. Remember McSane was so mad at that time that he called Obam (That One)

Yes, John “Maverick” McCain served our country. but I will never, never, NEVER!! (did I say never? I meant NEVER!!!) forgive him for torturing my beloved country with that quitter from Wasilla, the grifter, half-term governor, lying, racist, greedy, deceitful, hypocritical witch of female who is Sarah Palin.

damn I’ll never be as smart, as intelligent, as caring or as powerful as this guy

Which is exactly what he needs to be thinking because it is absolutely, positively true. Which is probably why Pres. Obama agreed to talk with him.

There are many things that I admire about Pres. Obama. One of them is that, after he lets his opponent make an ass out of himself, he walks right up to him and shakes hands. It’s like the proverbial kiss of death. I LOVE IT!!!

          • October 18, 2011 at 5:54 pm

None of them will ever admit it, but they’re intimidated by PBHO. I think this is a key source of MSM’s animus toward him. In their minds, no POC is supposed to be superior to them in any way.

      • October 18, 2011 at 6:42 pm

I noticed the same thing Sue! His body language is so blase and disrespectful, I just wanted to slap on his neck! BUT, I can also ‘see’ (or perhaps imagine) a vibe where he’s trying to actually mask the resignation that he’ll NEVER be as significant as the magnificent human being who is 2 feet away from him.

      October 18, 2011 at 4:55 pm

Tapper is all about GOT YOU questions; and he is pathetic , but PBO knows that and he can take
any of them down gentle with his intellect and capabilities of full knoladge on any issues. I am not
worried about PBO interviewing with any body, he knows how to handle them.
But whet they edit the tape they will always twist thing around. to make it as negative as possible.

That’s is the idea of PBO to take it to the people direct, the local press will be force to cover him because
is local news and the people want to know. and this way he can put pressure on Congress speacially the GOP.

    By Ben Geman,

A divided Commodity Futures Trading Commission voted along party lines Tuesday to impose new restrictions on speculative trading in energy futures markets.

The rules, required under last year’s Dodd-Frank law, are aimed at reigning in speculative Wall Street trading that some allege has driven up oil prices and worsened market volatility in recent years.

The rules impose “position limits” on the amount of futures and swaps contracts for oil and other commodities that traders may hold.

“While I’d have an even tougher rule in many respects if I were the only author, this is nonetheless a very strong, needed and imperative rule to ensure more efficient and effective markets devoid of fraud, abuse and importantly, manipulation,” said Bart Chilton, a Democratic member of the five-person CFTC who has been the body’s most outspoken advocate of imposing the rules, in a statement.

Chilton voted for the rule along with CFTC Chairman Gary Gensler and Democratic member Michael Dunn.

The rule sets limits on contracts for oil, natural gas and two other energy contracts, as well as a slew of agricultural and metals contracts.

Republican CFTC members Jill Sommers and Scott O’Malia opposed it. Sommers said she’s not opposed to limits per se and noted the regulators have set limits in some markets for years.

But she laid out several concerns with the rule, including fears that exemptions for “bona fide hedgers” — that is, companies such as utilities and manufacturers that use trading markets to manage price risks — are too narrow.

More broadly, she said the CFTC is “setting itself up for an enormous failure.”

“I do not believe position limits will control prices or market volatility, and I fear that this Xommission will be blamed when this final rule does not lower food and energy costs,” she said.

But Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who has bashed delays in the rules, has long argued that speculation has an outsized effect on energy prices.

    Good ole Bernie. Not!

The departments of Transportation and Commerce said Tuesday that they will work together on increasing the number of manufacturing projects that use equipment and parts made in America.

Officials in both departments announced a partnership they said will help more manufacturers meet the “Buy America” requirements for DOT grants and loans using the Commerce Department’s “Manufacturing Extension Partnership” program.

The program currently works with 34,000 companies that make supplies for manufacturing projects.

Here is the pool report from dinner at Reids:

Reporters getting ready for President Obama’s three-day buscapade through North Carolina and Virginia suspected ahead of time that there were going to be a lot of OTRs — White House schedule-speak for unannounced stops along the way.

Obama seems to love them. The stops create instant-excitement, they make great pictures and the deliberate, corny folksiness — diners, general stores, regular people — is uncannily campaign-like, even though technically this is not a campaign trip.

For lunch on Tuesday, Obama and his entourage stopped at Reid’s House Restaurant in Reidsville, N.C., where the president met a man named Reid.

The sign above the counter advertised homemade pies, banana pudding and rice pudding, according to the pool report. A man told POTUS he and his wife, who was with him, have been married 59 years.

    “Fifty-nine!” Obama exclaimed.

Another man told POTUS he was a funeral director. “Oh, the funeral home business,” Obama said excitedly. “Fantastic. That’s important work.”

The last man POTUS greeted was a man apparently named Reid (unclear if he was the restaurant’s namesake). Obama said, “This is Reid himself!” And he took a seat next to Reid.

Obama loves the bus, he loves barbecue, he loves meeting people and the open road. Will the president ever come back to the White House?

“You may have heard, we’re taking a little road trip this week. It’s a chance to get out of Washington,” he told an audience in North Carolina Tuesday. “The bus we got parked outside is — Secret Service did a full going over, so it — it — it’s decked out pretty good. But — but it’s a wonderful opportunity to get out of Washington and hit the road.”

He added, “We stopped for a little North Carolina barbecue and sweet tea along the way. We — some hush puppies — don’t tell Michelle exactly what was on the menu.”

Outside of Reid’s, Obama emerged carrying a plastic bag stuffed with styrofoam food containers and worked the ropeline. He dispensed hugs, talked Panthers football, his shoes — and he talked to grandma.

Briefing reporters in the pool van, White House press secretary Jay Carney confirmed the obvious — Obama is “clearly enjoying himself,” he said.

Speaking of concern troll Tapper, he and the rest of the GOP WH Press Corps wonder why the President continues to take his message directly to the people and ignore the national media.

It’s because the people enjoy the President’s presence when he visits and listens to their concerns, and the GOP Press corps and national media just want to smear him and make him look bad in order to help the Republicans. It’s the same media that focused on Donald Trump and his quest to investigate the President’s birth certificate, and practically bent over backwards defending him… all a ruse to promote his STUPID TV SHOW. It’s also the same media that invites the emoprog left jokers like Maxine Waters, Tavis Smiley, Glenn Greenwald, Jane Hamsher, Adam Greene to bash the President and represent his “dwindling base” when in fact they aren’t the base AT ALL.

I can’t say I blame President Obama for going around the national media, I would too. Why waste time with a media so determined to help your opponents win at any cost?

Yeah..looks like our President is really losing the youth. They seem so uninterested and depressed when he’s around. I guess that’s what Mark Landler will say in his next NYT hit piece.

  18. October 18, 2011 at 4:55 pm

The media lost me when they let the whole world believe there was “death panels” in the ACA. I feel that is when President Obama lost his faith in the corporate media. Do you remember when he went to Korea and one of the WH stenographers asked him about Sarah Palin instead of what he had been able to achieve with the korean government.

    • 62 nintendowii10
      October 18, 2011 at 5:02 pm

The media lost me when they fawned over Donald Trump, defended him going after President Obama’s birth certificate, and bought hook line and sinker that he was running for President when in reality he was doing nothing but promoting his stupid TV show. And of course asking him about Sarah Palin tops the cake, why the heck would President Obama be concerned with what the half term twit believes of him? Half term twit has a mad crush on him and he’s not going for it because he’s happily married to Michelle, who is 100X a wife, parent, and FLOTUS that Half term twit will EVER be.

  19. October 18, 2011 at 5:05 pm

I notice the Press, Csntir and McCain are mocking the President. When you mock someone, you are pushing buttons, trying to flustered him! Now, it seems, the senate GOP is mocking Reid, saying you are blocking the defense vote! He needs to stay cool.
They are trying to rattle him, so far, he is unflappable!

    • 64 nintendowii10
      October 18, 2011 at 5:15 pm

Our President has repeatedly demonstrated he is one cool cat and does NOT bend or break under pressure. That’s why the emoprog left want him to show some sort of anger and begin yelling, like Orange Boner and Rush Limbaugh.

The most recent time I can recall President even getting remotely close to “angry” was at the CBC when he smacked the podium at the end with an attitude that virtually said “AND NOW WHAT?!!!” The emoprog left want him to use that waaaaaaaaaaaay too much because to them political theater is more important than results.
