the liberal media….

Pew Research: Rick Perry received the most favorable coverage of any candidate for president during the first five months of the race, but now Herman Cain is enjoying that distinction, according to a new survey which combines traditional research methods and computer algorithmic technology to code the level and tone of news coverage.

…. One man running for president has suffered the most unrelentingly negative treatment of all: Barack Obama. Though covered largely as president rather than a candidate, negative assessments of Obama have outweighed positive by a ratio of almost 4-to-1. The assessments of the president in the media were substantially more negative than positive in every one of the 23 weeks studied. In no week during these five months was more than 10% of the coverage about the President positive in tone.

Maybe not FAKE and maybe not a fist full of fools because once I re-looked at it, I see that this is soooOOOooo true. That’s what I get for not reading carefully and ready to jump down anyone dissing PBO. I’m retiring,

Nope. You’re absolutely right. Everytime he appears on the Chris Matthews Show he ALWAYS acts like a jerk when talking about the President. So it was very hypocritical of him to call out the media when he is a part of the gutter tripe they peddle.

Thanks for this Chips. Just tweeted it to a whole bunch of media morons.

  7. October 17, 2011 at 10:34 am

I wish they would have been doing this the whole 3 yrs of his presidency.. it would possible wise up some of the populace to the propoganda by the media- how we’re being driven, steered & manipulated every single day to do exactly what those hated ‘corporations’ want us to do.. vote for who will serve them, deregulate them. All those happy little morning shows.. the Today Show; etc.. all playing the manipulation game. Think about it.. President Obama getting avg of 9% positive coverage in a given week in 5 months- means they (the national media) are all coordinating/competing with one another to push this agenda.

Occupy WallStreet ought to wise up and do a good portion of their protesting at the national media hdquarters & Congress. I absolutely believe that the media is the true enemy of this country, and frankly I would not be surprised if they get down right dangerous as we get into full blast election coverage- dangerous for POTUS and dangerous for us. Yes I admit I detest the media, but thats because I think they’ve proven collectively that their is no gutter they will not roll in.

I have a confession…my “sin” is that although most of us supporters don’t like to discuss polls I have to admit that I am a poll watcher. {{{blushing}}} Not for any one particular poll that comes out on any given day but I watch the trends in the polls. If you look at the overall trend for PBO this year its hasn’t been very good and not because he is not a phenomenal leader who has implemented fantastic polices. The reason for his negative trend is because of our Corporate owned, lazy, sloppy, stenographers that call themselves the mainstream media. Just look at those stats.

Does everyone here understand why GWB got an 80% approval rating after letting Al Qaeda attack America back in 2001? Its because the media portrayed him as this big, bad Texan who was going to get OBL “dead or alive”. How did that work out for ya GWB? Nothing was written at the time about the fact that GWB allowed us to be hit. Nothing was talked about on the cable shows in a but..but….disparaging way about the attack. No Democrats visited the talking heads and pointed out any negative aspects about the Bush Administration taking their eye off the ball or anyone questioning GWB’s leadership. Do you see the difference yet? Fast forward to today and our President takes out the man who was responsible for attacking us and he gets….”but Bush should get some credit as well” and “I need to see the body to believe” and “its a publicity stunt” and “he better not go too far in thumping his chest for this capture”. So PBO barely gets a bump in the polls of about 5 or 6 points because even though this was a tremendous accomplishment the story is told with caveats.

This media is doing outrageous damage to the public’s perception of someone that they like very much (this is evident in polling when asked this question) but are told that he isn’t doing enough or isn’t doing it the way the media thinks he should. Everything about this administration is sold to the public with a caveat.

Polls are a snapshot of the mood of the public on a given topic (driven by the media because the public is basically lazy and doesn’t do much research beyond the 3 minute report on the evening news). Its not perfect but it gives you an idea of how people are trending.

I can register new voters, I can make donations, I can try and inspire others to get involved in the Presidents re-election campaign, I can phone bank, I can canvass, I can cheerlead and I can get everyone I know to the polls. But I shouldn’t have to re-invent the wheel re-educating the voting public simply because the media refuses to do their job.

They are hungry for a horse race next year. Their plan IMO (and based on that survey posted in the thread head) is to bloody and beat PBO up politically to keep the public’s perception of him in question so that he doesn’t run away with this re-election next year because he is head and shoulders above any one of those fools running on the Republican side.

So my question is what should we do about it?

    • October 17, 2011 at 11:39 am

Hi Donna, just about to email you!

Confession: I’m an obsessive poll watcher, and even though I know it’s nuts to worry about them this far away from the election, it’s hard not to get dispirited.

And it’s hard not to feel utterly powerless in the face of this kind of media, but that’s why we all have to press on and keep fighting back the best we can – whether it’s through Twitter, Facebook, blogs, commenting on and correcting dishonest stories on news websites with facts, writing/emailing/Tweeting reporters/media, trying to pressure them to tell the truth. What else can we do?

      • October 17, 2011 at 1:52 pm

Also, we have to keep in mind that as low as PBO’s numbers may be-THIS FAR OUT-the republicans are much worse.

We are not “utterly powerless”, Ms. Chipsticks, because of people like you who keep the spirit and the dream alive.

P.S. Anybody have Dan Rather’s e-mail address so we can thank him? I hope he’s FLOODED with positive responses.

I so agree, donna dem. It has been frustrating and maddening to observe, to put it mildly, and I’ve racked my brain trying to figure out why—-ratings or corporate orders or what—-but it is a hell of a job to try to combat our entire American news media. There are a few bright spots here and there—–but the overall picture the media is presenting to the public is a false one. The snippets people get in the morning and in the evening when most people catch the news are all slanted, all misleading, all incomplete. Just look at the guests on the Today Show and what stories they schedule every day—–all favor Repubs and their rhetoric. This current crop of “journalists” seem to be unethical and are failing our country, reporting the truth no longer seems to be of importance to them. No wonder Obama has to go out and speak directly to the public. It’s the only way any truth gets told.

      • 28 a4alice
        October 17, 2011 at 1:50 pm

Divide them into categories. 1. Truth Tellers. 2. GOP water carriers. 3. Out and out crazy liars. 1. Sometimes truth tellers are the ones we get mad at for other things they do. (rachel M). but when they tell the truth give them some love. 2. GOP water carriers need the push back of truth told publicly or privately to them or to their editor (Mark Knoller). 3. Out and out crazies publicly eviscerate and warn the general populace. (ann coulter).

That is completely off the top of my head. Now I have to go back and put in more edging in my garden.

    • October 17, 2011 at 12:26 pm

My take away is that people see through the fifth columnist ways of the msm and are silently rallying behind him. Look at the fund raising numbers, i am not talking about the donations, I am talking about the donors, which has doubled since 2008 despite the bad economy.

We need to keep pushing back against the msm/pl lies.

    • October 17, 2011 at 5:19 pm

Hi DD4O, my take on what we should do about it hinges on what we have already started to do – push back. Even though this sounds initially simplistic, I think it can work in the same way as PBO’s grassroots fundraising worked last time and is working now, IF WE GRADUALLY BUILD OUR BASE OF THOSE PUSHING BACK relentlessly AND with DIGNITY (i.e. without verbal ‘violence’ 😉 ).

      1. One first push back example is actually highlighted by EDP4BHO in her comments below. WE NEED TO KNOW OUR STUFF.

‘Now, because I had no info at hand or in mind to the contrary, I realize I lost a golden opportunity to counter with fact…’
‘I will be taking little crash courses on my end to be almost a walking repository of critical data leading us toward the 2012
election. I trust we all will be very informed whenever the challenges present.’

UTALib is one family member who impresses me with her ability to put facts out there quickly. When I see her in action here I generally excuse myself with ‘Well, she’s a young STUDENT. My brain is too old. Plus, I can always find the info at TOD.’ But these opportunities don’t always occur providentially near the computer, and the fact is as I’m computer clumsy I can’t always find info quickly. So EDP makes a good suggestion for us to gradually internalize the facts.

I personally saw the importance of this recently when I was speaking to a friend who ‘likes’ the President but also believes the news she hears that he is having difficulty leading. (She is not ‘too lazy’ to research. Her reality is two very active young children, one of whom is not yet in school.) I told her that was not true and gave her some general info about some of PBO’s accomplishments; however at the particular moment of the conversation I blanked and could only definitively name a few. Since she trusts me that was enough, fortunately to make her pause and say ‘Oh’. She really wasn’t averse to the President, just kept in darkness by the MSM. Someone else here mentioned recently the idea of ‘traveling’ with handy fact sheets. A good idea, I thought.

      2. Another push back strategy is something Linda at WiW proposed months ago that I did once or twice then gave up. GGail suggested it below – pat the author of TRUTHFUL journalism on the shoulder. We spend a LOT of our time rehashing the negative stuff out there, yet if we don’t spend time cultivating the positive, who will? Obviously not the MSM as it now stands. So, let’s encourage the kind of journalism we want to see, WHENEVER WE RECOGNIZE IT. If I remember correctly, Linda suggested that we say specifically, but briefly, one thing we appreciated in the article/show/or whatever, thereby reiterating the particular favourable bit of information. We wouldn’t necessarily have to read the negative comments that are posted. Sign in, acknowledge the truth in the author/reporter’s work, sign out. In the midst of all the criticism, a positive comment (or several) might just stand out. Imagine the potential impact if our army grew and this caught on. Would we be able to quietly push the naysayers aside? Maybe, maybe not, but our LONG TERM GOAL would be to plant seeds that may eventually turn the dialogue, AND WHO’S TO SAY THAT ONE READER MAY NOT BE LIKE MY FRIEND WHO JUST WANTED SOME LITTLE BIT OF EVIDENCE WHICH COUNTERED THE STEADY DRONE OF NEGATIVITY?

      3. Also, as we have been doing on Twitter, continue to call out the faux-journalists! (Yes they are paid to do their jobs, but it’s in our collective best interests to help them see when they are not doing it well.) IMO we have already made a good start in this area, and our twitter troops are relentless. 😆

[3b. I think it might be ‘fun’ to now cultivate a twitter TRUTH platoon that hits back with FACTS and FACTS ALONE. No snark. No anger. No pejoratives. No confrontations. No ’emotion’. Simple truth in the manner of the President, They lie, we just say, ‘Have you, (@msnbc/@markknoller/ @?) seen/read this?’ ‘You need to check this out.’ ‘This seems to contradict your position.’ ‘Oops! I think you missed this’ etc. etc. etc. My suggestion for this ‘new’ branch of our ‘army’ IS NOT TO STOP THOSE WHO Need TO GET THEIR ANGST OUT., but would be in addition to them. Somewhat like Team 6 (?) that carried out the OBL mission? 😉 ]

Conclusion, DD4O, to what do we do about it? We try to join forces and fight back. We will have to EDUCATE the voting public – the part of it we each come in contact with – because the media do refuse to do their job. WE would be in good company though; 😉 PBO is unfortunately having to do the same thing because Congress is not doing ITS job.

Another way to think of it is that some others of us who can’t donate or phone bank or canvass, who can’t be on the front line for whatever reason, might be able to help share the work by bringing up the rear as an additional media contact team, or facts platoon members. Yes, the mood has been trending negative, but maybe ONE VOICE (vocalized by ALL of us here, and later those we add to the mission) can change the mood over the next 13 months. I’m will to try.

          October 17, 2011 at 7:35 pm

VC I think this is a great idea. I sort of said something like this above but you said it way better. and way more mature. 🙂 WIW has lots of information like addresses and such for media and the like. I’m sure she would totally be a great resource. And I’m sure if people teamed up that would be helpful. I’d actually have to watch some of this stuff but the meme(s) that are false that the MSM keeps pushing I hear about all the time, from here and just when we have the national news on at 5:30.

Are we still having Friday as some kind of action day? I don’t know that this would help – pressing back against the media seems more like an immediate task.

anyways lets talk about it and see if others are interested in helping push back on false information.

          • October 17, 2011 at 10:57 pm

a4A, I think I’ll bring this up again tomorrow – my eyes are closing right now . I really like the idea of a truth team ( in addition to our current posting) that would simply and calmly highlight the truth on TWITTER when a journalist/pundit misrepresents info. I also think the idea of consistently acknowledging accurate journalism might bear fruit if we all did it.

I just received a call from the NRA carrying a lie that the Obama administration is in cahoots with China at the UN to thwart the 2nd amendment right to arms. Question: do you agree that the UN should be on our soil telling dictating to us our gun laws?, press 1; if not, press 2. I held, a live voice comes on, identifies herself as a member of the NRA, and asked had I heard the questions. I said yes, called her a liar , and told her goodbye. Now, because I had no info at hand or in mind to the contrary, I realize I lost a golden opportunity to counter with fact. I say this as a heads up to myself and us all that we have got to “know” the facts like we know the details of our favorite soap opera, mystery, crime, comedy, reality or other TV shows, to be well armed to fight against the lies, confusion, and outright hatred directed towards everything PBO has done, means to do, will do in the months and years ahead. Another heads up…..on Rev Al, a caller says a Charlie Rose show had the co-founder of Home Depot saying he would vote for anyone but PBO, and Rev Al’s guest, Earl Ofari Hutchinson says this is an ultra-conservative in line with Koch brothers. So, I had been biding my time as I owe that store a lot of money, but I plan on closing my account and not shopping there very soon. Ken Langone is his name, and another co-founder, Bernie Marcus says PBO is choking our recovery. Lowes, anyone? 😀

Hi GGAIL Thanks for the note on fund raising idea. Also there is another thing about your note on Ken Lagone He was the investment Banker that arranged the Financing for founders of HOME DEPOT who were Arthur Blank,Bernie Marcus,Ron Brill,Pat Farrah. But runs around as the so called founder .So take his words as one of those Wall Street Insiders who put some money and want all the credit for a idea. You see Arthur Blank owns the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL in Georgia.I had a chance to meet Mr. Blanks at A Democratic political Event in Georgia in 2008 that Mr.Blanks paid all the Trucking fees for 18 Rigs that carried the gear.So not all of the founders of HOME DEPOT have spoke against The President.I know he paid the $2800 dollars for my run to the Event and they had a lot of Home Depot signs up at the Event..This just a little note not to paint all of Home Depot people because of one Jerk Ken Lagone a Hedge Fund Jerk.

All I can say is that PBO has had to deal with a negative press from day one. There is no point that I can remember when he was given any break at all from the msm. When he participated in Democratic debates, people listening said he won, even though the msm tried to push the narrative against him. He was everything in the book–terrorist, anti-Christian, anti-American and almost not human and Michelle was treated at someone who hated her country. And that was just for openers. When he lost a primary, he was pronounced a goner by the press and his method of racking up delegates was dismissed as a bean counting approach to the nomination that was not capturing the hearts and minds of people. Every poll showing Hilary in the lead and later McCain in the lead was treated as “proof” of his unpopularity and as evidence that a black man could not be elected president. To the very day of election, a lot of the msm were openly hoping for a McCain victory and on and on it has gone from Day 1 of his presidency. Yet millions of volunteers, knocking on millions of doors and the evidence of people’s own eyes as they watched him and heard him and felt his sincerity, turned the tide in the end, despite the best efforts of the msm to tar him. Now PBO has been on the road, presenting his authentic self to people and they are responding. And the millions of volunteers who will reach out for him are marshalling forces, ready to hit the streets at the right time. So rather than despair at the polls, marvel at the fact that DESPITE all of the 24 hour a day vilification, millions and millions of people still love him and appreciate what he’s done for the country and he is still polling about where former presidents have polled at this time.

‘In no week during these five months [ May 2 – October 9, 2011] was more than 10% of the coverage about the President positive in tone.’

So nothing the President accomplished this past summer, not even his national security successes wer worthy of high praise! 😦
