‘believe it or not, the left is still behind obama’

Adam Sorensen: …. one can understand why California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom might have thought his recent venting session at a gathering of fellow Democrats in Half Moon Bay would be met with approving clucks or, at very least, silent nods. Not so much.

“Among the Newsom jabs: Obama should have pushed his agenda harder when the Democrats still controlled both houses of Congress,” recounted the San Francisco Chronicle, “a remark that drew a handful of boos from the audience.” … Newsom ran smack into what seems to be a common misconception about the Obama presidency: Though many of the left’s opinion makers have turned away from Obama, broader liberal flight is a phenomenon that simply doesn’t exist.

Real Clear Politics’ latest data crunching pegs the President’s average approval among Democrats at a robust 76.8%. (For comparison, in October of 1995, soon-to-be-re-elected Bill Clinton’s Democratic support was a near-identical 77%, according to Gallup.) And what of the real left? The ones whose disappointment has been given voice by people like Drew Westen to Paul Krugman? It turns out self-identified liberals’ support for Obama isn’t far behind at 72% in Gallup’s latest tracking data. (The same group gave Clinton 65% approval in 1995)….

…. Gavin Newsom, who rumor has it might run for Congress next year when Rep. Lynn Woolsey is likely to retire, should know that in the liberal bastion of San Francisco, there’s little political upside in breaking with Obama.

What a silly move by Newsom. San Francisco is the home of Nancy Pelosi, who helped President Obama move hundreds of bills through the 111th Congress – many of which were critical to his agenda. And Nancy was re-elected overwhelmingly in her district. For Newsom to try and jump on the anti-Obama bandwagon, in San Francisco of all places, is a very stupid move. And it goes to his level of integrity and credibility. What about President Obama is not distinctly democratic? What?

It’s like that scene from “Pretty Woman” when Julia Roberts character goes back to the store that snubs her and says “Stupid move. Very stupid move”.

Gavin has been known to do “stupid” from time to time. He’s still half-baked and will be crushed by President Obama & Nancy Pelosi if he goes too far!

Gavin Newsom is part of the Clinton crowd and they are behind this recent vocal attack on President Obama from the left!!! They have been testing waters to see how far and how effective their attacks on President Obama has been.

The Gavin Newsom’s of the world have no clue and will soon find out how important Barack Obama is not just to the United States and the world but specifically to the Democratic party!!!

Gavin Newsom will find out that HIS political future depends entirely on President Obama’s success as a two term President!!!

Gavin and the rest of the Clinton cabal better believe that!!!

I’m not surprised at all theo67!!!

I remember very well all the nasty stuff Gavin spewed about Candidate Obama when he and Ron Dellums, Villaraigosa embarked upon their vote Hillary campaign through California during the primaries!!!

Gavin Newsom has always been a classless, low-life, immoral, ambitious, glib, narcissistic opportunist with his lips firmly planted on the arses of the Clintons and only because he sees that association as his ticket to national political office and nothing more!!!

I voted for Newsom only because I voted a straight Democratic ticket, but I am so done with these assholes!!!

Wasn’t this around the time when President Obama was telling people that he had “more important things to do” than cater to the cry-babies in Congress? Or am I confusing that with the time he was plotting to get OBL? either way – this man does more in an hour than Congress has done all year.

Just vote, Democrats. Come out, do your civic duty, defeat the most dangerous extremists to populate the opposition party in American history. If you don’t, and if people who have microphones like Gavin Newsom are that irresponsible as to suppress the vote, then they have joined the extremists. They have helped Republicans further ruin this country.

Obama’s not perfect? Let’s follow Michael Moore-type logic: Hitler is moving into Paris, has taken over Poland and other European countries. If we can’t defeat Hitler in our first battle, then FDR is a failure and we shouldn’t have voted for him in the first place.

How’s that logic working for ya?

Really Gavin? You want to trot out firebagger and emoprog BS against President Obama? Really? Are you kidding me? How gullible do these people think some voters are? Don’t they know that many many people know how hard PBO has fought and is fighting for the American people and the titanic level of obstruction he faces from some of the left wing, all of the rightwing and oh yes the extreme nut jobs. Seriously, Gavin; sit down, shut up. Talk to Californians about how the AJA positively benefits them. If you have nothing concrete to say; then I’d suggest you zip it. After all Lt. Govs are only supposed to be seen not heard from.

I just know how I feel. I subscribe to several liberal groups email lists and enjoy and appreciate the information. However, if I see a blatantly unfair article about the President being headlined on their site or I see a pattern of taking shots at the President, I am unsubcribing. It has happened more than a few times recently. Triangulate with the President and I won’t be reading your stuff anymore.

Lieberman on floor says, the best way to create jobs is to reduce debt!
Says jobs act is to pricey, but will vote for cloture!
Webb saying exactly same thing as Lieberman…

Where are the senate democrats in favor of this bill, on the senate floor?

The President should run against the do nothing Congress, including Democrats!

Bear in mind, I was very pro active, calling and emailing my senators and reps!

It seems Democrats have killed this bill!

Oh and fuck you, Newsom. This is why Dems never seem to get ahead. They are too busy trying to pile on instead of supporting what the president has done and why.

  21. October 11, 2011 at 4:08 pm

CAN’T STAND that idiot Newsom. He was my mayor for years. Slept with an aide’s wife, went to rehab and did ZIP for the city. AND he has the nerve to imply that PBO didn’t do ENOUGH? PLEASE. He’s a slimeball who thinks he’ll be President one day. I don’t understand why he’s gotten so far.

  22. October 12, 2011 at 5:17 am

I’ve never considered voting for anyone but President Barack H. Obama in 2012. Even if the GOP had a credible candidate (Which they don’t!) to run against President Obama…I am and have always been a Democrat: First-Foremost-And Forever! So, being able to vote for and give my entire support to such an incredible individual as President Barack Obama, is an honor for me, And something I’ll forever cherish with great pride and the fond memory knowing I voted for BARACK OBAMA in both the 2008 and 2012 elections. Hey, I’m In! “Cuz, Baby, I was born this way!” (A Democrat)

  23. October 13, 2011 at 7:36 pm

Isn’t it okay to have a difference of opinion? Even if you are a politician. And when you have a different view, is it too much to ask that your comments be reported truthfully and accurately? What’s sad is that THIS story offers none of those things. When tabloid driven columnists twist things around and don’t bother to do any fact checking, then recycle someone else’s erroneous reporting as their own, it just turns into a gossip column free for all. And like the Energizer Bunny, it just keeps going and going. For the life of me, I don’t understand. I mean, if you’re gonna do it, copy someone who actually knows what the hell they are talking about and not these clowns, Matier & Ross!

Suffice to say, people love a reason to gossip and whether or not you’re a fan of Gavin Newsom, he didn’t deserve to be lied about and misrepresented the way he was in this article. I’m just floored by some of the comments here, people speaking as if they were at the event and heard every word he said, in person. Obviously this sort of cut and paste “journalism” fills blogs and draws comments so I probably shouldn’t be so surprised. It’s what’s tearing apart our party though- this petty nonsense. It simply takes away from all the issues we really need to be focused on.

Well, If anyone cares to read the truth about what actually went down at our event in Half Moon Bay on the 30th, you can read the post below. I can vouch for the credibility. I was there and I wrote the article.

    • October 13, 2011 at 7:50 pm

Hi Wendy, thanks for commenting here, I appreciate it.

Thank you, too, for giving an alternative take on Newsom’s comments to those reported by Adam Sorensen.

To be honest, I don’t visit Huffington Post any more, I’ve actually un-bookmarked it, I think the place is poisonous and jam-packed with “petty nonsense” every day – to me, it seems like the agenda there is way more focused on trying to demoralize the President’s base and “tearing apart our party”, than on any constructive debate or on the horror show that is the alternative, Romney/Cain/Perry/Latest Freak.

But even if you write for HP (!), because you were there, I’m happy to accept your word for it when you say Sorensen’s report was, well, wrong.

      Thanks again.

PS HP links aren’t generally allowed here, it’s a bile-free zone (!), but I’ll happily make an exception so others can read your piece.

Thanks for your honesty and for agreeing to post the real story. If you would prefer to cut and paste it into the body of my comment page rather than leave it up as the link to Huff, please feel free. Again, thanks for your quick response and for the chance to set things straight.
        Cheers, Wendy
