this is a shock: the right wing hates the first lady.

MediaMatters: The axe-grinding good-government poseurs at Judicial Watch are in a twist over First Lady Michelle Obama’s June trip to Africa, calling it “a nice taxpayer-funded ‘working’ vacation.” According to documents they obtained via FOIA requests (and their own “calculations”), the trip cost taxpayers $425,000 in travel and food expenses. Their “report” has already been picked up by Drudge, and it’s being flogged by the dimmer corners of the right-wing media.

….. First, it’s ridiculous to criticize the First Lady for the travel costs of an official trip to Africa. She’s the First Lady; if she travels anywhere, it’s going to be funded with public money. She can’t exactly fly stand-by on Southwest.

Second, the South Africa safari was paid for with the Obama’s private funds. What’s more, in taking her daughters on safari in Africa, Mrs. Obama was following in the footsteps of her predecessor. (Read here about Laura Bush and her daughters’ safari in Africa)

(A quick peek at Judicial Watch’s press release archive doesn’t turn up any outraged denunciations of Laura Bush’s safari-going ways.)

…. to say that the trip “was as much an opportunity for the Obama family and friends to go on a safari as it was a trip intended to advance the administration’s agenda in Africa” is absurd. The six-day trip was dominated by official events and meetings with world leaders…..

…. Judicial Watch doesn’t really explain how a meeting with Nelson Mandela constitutes “tourism.” Also, the other events Judicial Watch considers “tourism” – visits to museums and historical landmarks – are standard fare for visiting dignitaries. Laura Bush, during the same Africa trip noted above, toured museums and memorials dedicated to victims of apartheid and genocide…..

ABC:  ….. The White House says a number of assertions made by conservative government watchdog Judicial Watch are in error:

The group calculated that the use of the C-32A aircraft cost taxpayers $424,142 (34.8 flight hours x $12,188 per hour).

“The number stated is misconstrued and out of context,” says a senior White House official. “The hourly rate is not the marginal cost of operating the plane – it is an accounting figure that prices in a number of fixed costs from maintaining the Air Force fleet for this kind of plane over a year. For example, it includes estimated replacement parts, depreciation, repairs, and costs that would have been incurred regardless of this flight.”

Judicial Watch says that Sasha and Malia Obama are listed as “Senior Staff.” Not true, says the White House.

“The Obama daughters were not listed as Senior Staff – that only designates the area of the plane where they were seated,” says the official. “The Air Force categorizes the passengers by compartment on the plane.”

…. The senior White House official says that private safari “was designated as a private event and paid for personally.”…. “It was an official trip with a 5-7 official events each day,” the official says.

FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMA’S VISIT TO SOUTH AFRICA AND BOTSWANA

TUESDAY, JUNE 21 – PRETORIA & JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

Mrs. Obama began her day by traveling to Pretoria where she met with President Zuma’s wife, Nompumelelo Ntuli-Zuma …..  she then attended a reception with South African leaders organized by the U.S. Embassy … She then visited the Nelson Mandela Foundation, meeting with Graca Machel, Former First Lady of Mozambique, and wife of former South African President Nelson Mandela. She also met with former President Mandela, before touring the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 22 – JOHANNESBURG & CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

Mrs. Obama visited Regina Mundi Church in Soweto, where she delivered the keynote address to a U.S.-sponsored Young African Women Leaders Forum. She then visited the Hector Pieterson Memorial, honoring the twelve year-old boy who protested apartheid and was shot and killed by apartheid government police. In the afternoon, Mrs Obama attended two sessions of a forum of Young African Women Leaders. Mrs. Obama completed her visit to Johannesburg by leading the final group of forum participants in a community service project.

THURSDAY, JUNE 23 – CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

Mrs. Obama began her day in Cape Town by thanking United States Consulate employees and their families. She then visited Robben Island – where former President Mandela was held for 18 of the 27 years he was imprisoned. She then delivered remarks and took questions from students at the University of Cape Town. She then visited the Cape Town Soccer Stadium where she met with Archbishop Desmond Tutu and organizations dedicated to combating HIV/AIDS in South Africa.

FRIDAY, JUNE 24 – CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA & GABORONE, BOTSWANA

Mrs. Obama visited the Botswana Baylor Children’s Clinic Center of Excellence’s Teen Club that was assembled to teach leadership among teens and encourage young people to teach others about HIV/AIDS. Mrs. Obama joined Teen Club members in a service project. She then had a meeting with President Ian Khama.

SATURDAY, JUNE 25 – GABORONE, BOTSWANA

Mrs. Obama began her day by thanking U.S. Embassy employees and their families. Following this event, Mrs. Obama and her family departed for private family safari events.

SUNDAY, JUNE 26 – GABORONE, BOTSWANA

Mrs. Obama and her family left Botswana to return to the United States.

****

But this trip was okay:

Laura Bush in Cape Town, South Africa, July 12, 2005

July 2005: After a safari weekend, Laura Bush stepped out of a dusty SUV with her twin daughters on Monday to serve as a goodwill ambassador in Africa for President Bush.

The first lady’s whirl through South Africa, Tanzania and Rwanda this week comes on the heels of a Scotland summit where British Prime Minister Tony Blair made alleviating Africa’s mass suffering the top agenda item for Bush and leaders of other wealthy countries.

Mrs. Bush and her 23-year-old daughters, Barbara and Jenna, spent the weekend at the Madikwe Game Reserve on the South African-Botswana border….

The first lady’s staff asked photographers to refrain from shooting the twins as they boarded the plane in Gaborone, Botswana, for the flight to Cape Town, on grounds that they were not part of the official delegation.

****

In 2010 Judicial Watch released its list of ‘Washington’s ten Most Corrupt Politicians’ – the list included President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Rahm Emanuel, Jesse Jackson, Jr, Barney Frank, Barbara Boxer and Maxine Waters.

It didn’t, for example, include Darrell Issa.

🙄

****

What can we conclude from all of this?

Well, two things:

(1) Laura Bush is a Republican and she’s white.

(2) Michelle Obama is a Democrat and she’s black.

That’s all, really.

Seriously, Sue. Their hate HAS consumed them. Look at that idiot Hank Williams Jr on Fox! Even the 3 Stooges looked a bit aghast at his statements.

I’ve said this from day one – it’s mainly race. Period. My grandson is biracial and I’ve seen how he was treated living up in this mainly white town compare to even San Diego where he lives now. He was never so glad to get out of here. Can’t count how many times he was stopped DWB.

Most whites like myself don’t want to admit that it plays a huge factor with PBO. He’s different, he’s “alien”, he hates capitalism (just heard that whopper today), his father was from a scary place and on and on.

Sue, I’m not sure what ails you, but I’m glad to welcome you back as well. I find that this site makes me feel a whole lot better when I’m going through a bad spell

It rattles my cage. Especially that I have been so blind to it for so many years. I agree most of it has to do with ignorance and intolerance.

I just spent 9 days in the ICU unit of a local hospital, aside from the competency and compassion that was demonstrated towards me at every turn what most impressed me was the diversity of the staff. Male, female, gay, straight, all nationalities, all dedicated to providing a healing enviornment, all working toward a common goal. It strikes me that it is precisely that common dignity that is what we all need to not just survive but thrive as human beings, as a community, as a country, as part of a larger world. It is the power of love.

I hate that racism still exist in this country…I believe that racism’s life force thrives because most people have been in denial. But, I’m glad that other folks are seeing what blacks have been living with/under forever…you all know what we have always known…now maybe this country can finally heal. I thank GOD for President Obama, The First Lady Michelle Obama and their family were born and that they have so graciously accepted this assignment…I don’t think any one else can do what they are doing in the wonderful magnificent way that they are doing it…the WORLD is truly blessed!

Don’t let them get to you dear Sue…

They are deathly afraid of Mrs Obama as a powerful weapon and campaigner for President Obama…

These contrived attacks are designed to weaken her and her husband by extension…

They are desperate to take away every advantage President Obama has…

That is why they are now squarely focused on Mrs Obama…

They are intent on doing a number on her reputation to chip away at her popularity and support the way they did President Obama but they’ll fail…

Another DISTRACTION from the AJA AMERICAN JOBS ACT. PBO & the Dems are winning the narrative. We can’t let up. IT’S JOBS, JOBS, JOBS.. Don’t let these MOFOS distract. The GOP got NOTHING in the way of jobs or legislation, NOTHING. Keep the heat on them about JOBS. They and the MSM keep saying if PBO doesn’t get the unemployment under 9% by 2012 he’s in trouble. Well, these MOFOS have been bold enough to predict what they think will stymie PBO’s re-election chances, so they will continue obstructing, delaying, and spinning when it comes to any MEANINGFUL LEGISLATION.

    AMERICANS NEEDS JOBS.

  8. October 4, 2011 at 6:58 pm

This whole thing is absolutely disgusting. The Right has proven beyond a shadow of doubt that they have no boundaries, none.. they will go as low as possible. If they think for one second that there will EVER be a way they can get to POTUS or FLOTUS in some sort of BS Scandel- then they are obviously as Stupid as they are crude & trashy.

  9. October 4, 2011 at 6:59 pm

President Obama continues to fight for the AJA and more and more people are seeing this. Loved his speech today in Texas. I also read a tweet from Elizabeth Warren’s campaign about upcoming debate livestreaming at http://gse.uml.edu/debate/

This really pisses me off! Laura Bushes trip probably COST the taxpayers money even the private safari. Those B@stards did not complain ONCE when the LB and the girls traveled nor when the girls were under age drinking, ducking the SS, putting those guys lives in danger, starting two wars that they refused to bring to an end because all their buddies were getting rich. Now because the majority of people voted them out in 2008 and a Dem president, they are sticking it to ALL the people by doing nothing to improve the lives of ALL americans. So help me GOD, we have got to get these people out of office for good – Republicans/Teabaggers need to disappear or reduced significantly in number that they are nonexistent.

  13. October 4, 2011 at 7:12 pm

Isn’t it a shame that in 2011 we still have to deal with the stuff. Mike Papantonio of the radio show “Ring of Fire” and appears on MSNBC occasionally openly admits that racism is the undercurrent in the Tea Party. He doesn’t try to soft soap it. He’s another Tim Wise. This stuff is pure racism.

    • October 4, 2011 at 7:35 pm

watching it.. not too impressed, they all say they support the AJA, but not one suggested how they’d get it PASSED if they were members of Congress.. the question unfortunately was stated as: “do you support the President’s Job bill?” rather should have been- how would you do YOUR JOB in Congress in regards to getting the Jobs bill passed?
They all keep saying we need jobs now- that the country is in “crisis”, but never mention that it is Congress preventing the jobs and causing the continued crisis.

Conservative Economist: ‘Regulatory Uncertainty Is A Canard Invented By Republicans’

However, Bruce Bartlett — a conservative economist who worked for both the Reagan and H.W. Bush administrations, as well as for former Rep. Jack Kemp (R-NY) and Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) — wrote today that this theory is just “a canard invented by Republicans“:

For some years, the Bureau of Labor Statistics has had a program that tracks mass layoffs. In 2007, the program was expanded, and businesses were asked their reasons for laying off workers. Among the reasons offered was “government regulations/intervention.” There is only partial data for 2007, but we have data since then through the second quarter of this year.

The table below presents the bureau’s data. As one can see, the number of layoffs nationwide caused by government regulation is minuscule and shows no evidence of getting worse during the Obama administration. Lack of demand for business products and services is vastly more important. […]

In my opinion, regulatory uncertainty is a canard invented by Republicans that allows them to use current economic problems to pursue an agenda supported by the business community year in and year out. In other words, it is a simple case of political opportunism, not a serious effort to deal with high unemployment.

    http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/10/04/regulation-and-unemployment/?smid=tw-nytimes&seid=auto

As the Economic Policy Institute found, “a simple review of investment and employment trends — what businesses are actually doing — reveals that employers are not behaving according to the narrative described in the uncertainty story: Employment and investment trends are what one would expect (or better) given the trends in the overall growth of the economy.” As Bloomberg News put it in an editorial, “the charge of ‘creating uncertainty’ is a way to blame Obama for the U.S.’s economic trials without having to explain the connection.”

The GOP is almost certainly not going to stop using the “regulatory uncertainty” talking point. But, as the research shows, the public and media should not take it seriously.

VIDEO: Romney On Health Care: ‘The Right Answer Is To Get It To Work More Like A Consumer Market’

During a town hall in Florida this afternoon, Mitt Romney said his health care plan would “treat individuals like consumers” and allow everyone to purchase individual health insurance policies across state lines. “Funny thing how markets work if you have real consumers,” he added:

ROMNEY: I believe that in health care, the right answer is to get it to work more like a consumer market and less like a government dominant monopoly like it is today.

Cain FLIP FLOPS and tries To Walk Back Past Support For Trying Al-Awlaki In U.S. Courts

For newly-anointed GOP presidential frontrunner Herman Cain, foreign policy is not a strong suit. He was clueless about a key question in Israel-Palestinian conflict, bumbled a key strategic policy point with China, and strongly believes that Iraq should pay the U.S. back for invading their country.

Thus, it’s not entirely surprising that he couldn’t quite figure out his position on al Qaeda operative Anwar al-Awlaki. The pizza mogul was originally of the mind that al-Awlaki, as an American citizen, “should be tried in our courts.” When asked if it would be legal for the Obama administration to issue a “kill order” for al-Awlaki, Cain replied, “In his case, no, because he’s an American citizen.” But after the administration announced the death of the wanted terrorist, Cain tried to wiggle out of his earlier position by offering two — We should try him in court but we don’t want him alive either:

But now that al-Awlaki has been killed by a drone missile, the 2012 GOP presidential candidate is “pleased that we have one less al Qaeda member that’s threatening us,” according to campaign spokesman JD Gordon.

When pressed on whether Cain’s feelings represent a departure from his earlier views, that al-Awlaki was an American citizen and deserved a trial, Gordon said, “It would be better to try him in court (but) if that’s not feasible, we don’t want him out there.”

Perhaps feeling the heat from the spotlight, Cain has been walking back quite a few of his statements. First calling Rick Perry’s racist rock “insensitive to a lot of black people in this country,” Cain immediately declared “I don’t care” about the slur the next day.

It called entitlement for equal. The following was penned a long time ago Although it may have been put out before it’s still valid.

As opposed to the Jim Crow era of white hoods and lynch mobs, 21st century American bigotry is now more often an unseen crime of the subtle and the reflexive — and the crime scene tends to be the shadowy nuances of hiring decisions, performance evaluations and plausible deniability.

“Though the colored man is no longer subject to barter and sale, he is surrounded by an adverse settlement which fetters all his movements.

In his downward course he meets with no resistance, but his course upward is resented and resisted at every step of his progress.

If he comes in ignorance, rags and wretchedness he conforms to the popular belief of his character, and in that character he is welcome; but if he shall come as a gentleman, a scholar and a statesman, he is hailed as a contradiction to the national faith concerning his race, and his coming is resented as impudence.

In one case he may provoke contempt and derision, but in the other he is an affront to pride and provokes malice.”

These crazies will twist anything and everything that First Lady Michelle Obama does. Why? Because they can’t find a scandal; so, they will try to make up a scandal. Do they think that either Obama is stupid? I am certain that they have every “i” dotted and every “t” crossed and have every receipt to support all of their transactions for which they are responsible.

I didn’t read all of either article…Political Watch and Drudge; however, I noticed from what I read that there was no question about expenses related to the niece, nephew or Mrs. Robinson. I wonder why? Could it be that everything related to this trip was in order…NOTHING SCANDALOUS! So, let’s just make up something to serve as a distraction and to create some doubts about this President.

By the way, did Political Watch or Drudge have issues with Vice President Biden’s granddaughter traveling with him on his trip to China and other Asian countries?

These idiots just can’t stand the fact that President Obama put the GOP in check when Congress members of the GOP were demanding that First Lady Michelle Obama submit her schedule of events to them for approval. Do you remember that? Took place early in this administration around the time that they were telling President Obama how to be dressed whenever he was in the Oval Office.

I know that a lot of what’s going on should be of serious concern; however, I look at these folks as a waste of my time.

They would just love it if President and Mrs. Obama would just stay home. they really hate seeing all of the love and support shown to them around the world. As Melissa Harris Perry said, Michelle Obama is “gold.”n She is after all the closer for this president, and will be awedome on the campaign trail, and they cannot stand it. They want to shut her down.

By the way has anyone read the article from Essence this month featuring FLOTUS? Loved it. Very appropriate that another article in the mag was all about the power of touch, {{hugging}}. That is Mrs. O all over again!

how do you get your lettering to appear white on the black background again, mine is dark dark gray:)
