‘house gop pushes for another shutdown crisis’

Steve Benen: When the House Republicans’ temporary spending measure failed on Wednesday night, the GOP leadership effectively had two broad options. House Speaker John Boehner could move to the middle, stop playing games with emergency disaster relief, pick up Democratic votes, and resolve the dispute. The threat of a government shutdown would disappear, and lawmakers could enjoy a week off.

Or Boehner and Republican leaders could move to the right, make the spending bill worse, pass a plan they know will be rejected, and invite another government shutdown crisis.

Which course did the GOP leadership choose? Take a wild guess.

…. Boehner and Republican leaders followed through on their threat to hold disaster aid hostage …. they deliberately chose to invite yet another standoff that threatens to shut down the government….

… Americans, for whatever reason, have elected ill-tempered, right-wing children to run the House of Representatives, and the result is not only one crisis followed by another, but a government that struggles badly to even complete the most basic of tasks …. they made matters worse on purpose…..

    Fine. Let’s shut it down.

Then let’s cut everyone in Congress’ pay by 30%, and permanently end their FOR LIFE pay and benefits. When they’re out of a job, they can file for unemployment & COBRA, just like the rest of us.

I agree with you, Tally! Time for some “Merit Pay” for members of Congress! You are of course being generous! I would say cut their pay 70% and take away all the money they spend in frivolous investigations! These people were elected to run the government and not to shut it down. The teabag-Republicans run on a platform of Job creation. They’ve been in office for nine months and they’ve not enacted a single Bill to create jobs!

If the government does shut down, members of Congress should receive ZERO pay! They also should not receive other benefits, including medical insurance. I wouldn’t even allow the them to collect unemployment benefits, just as people who voluntarily quit their jobs do not collect unemployment benefits. I am tired of having my taxes being used to pay for these dysfunctional teabag people who are currently running the House of Representatives. Enough is Enough!

I’m for dumping their retirement plan and putting all of them on Social Security like us. i bet they’d fix it then!

I am with you, but I have 2 senior parents on Soc. Sec., etc., but if worst come to worst, I can pay their rent for a month. I will find a way!

May they full enjoy the defeat America will present to them come the next election. And they will have truly earned it!

This is an interesting piece about Gitmo:

Guantanamo closure will proceed, official says
BRUSSELS — U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said Tuesday that the Obama administration will do its utmost to close the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay before next year’s presidential elections despite political opposition.

The republicans are like a child who just keeps throwing an unendless stream of tantrums. It just makes one want to pull one’s hair out.

REPUBS, Grow Up! Just grow up! Gop not doing one thing, but throwing their weight around. They need to first get a heart, a Soul that has compassion for others, rather than themselves. GROW UP Repubs. Just GROW UP!!

Exactly! Their “tantrums” go against the long history of this country. Real Patriots do not behave like this. I just sent speaker Boehner a fax. This is what I said:

” Sixty-Nine million Americans Voted For President Obama, in 2008, compared to only Forty-Four million Americans who voted for the majority of Congressional Republicans, in 2010. What I don’t understand, Mr. Speaker, is how come 44 million people tramp 69 million people when it comes to determining the will of the American people? How come Congress is bent on dictating policy to the President? Are members of the House Republican Caucus not aware that President Obama received 25 million more votes than did Republicans in Congress? Why do House Republicans, who are so pious about the Constitution,” prefer Congressional dictatorship instead of trying to genuinely work with Democrats who are in the majority in the Senate to get things done?

It occurs to me that those knuckle-draggers on the right are doing a classic variation of “blame the victim”. It is their misguided thinking that people will blame the President for all the gridlock and lack off funding for things because if Obama wasn’t in the WH things would be working fine. To tell the truth, there are a lot of knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing, flat-landers that believe all their troubles will dissolve when the President is gone(the black man is doin’ this to y’all)……….Listen for the banjos!

yardarm this I’m afraid is more to the point. As soon as we have a Conservative White President in the Whitehouse all will be well America. This is the message they are sending. Will the American people respond the way the Domestic Terrorists wish? Stay tuned more will be revealed. BTW I guess some of us were wrong when we assumed the 2012 budget was taken care of in the debt ceiling talks. 😦

They won’t grow up. Most of them are completely and profoundly anti-democratic. The few republicans who still have a conscience can’t find the courage to speak up.

  8. September 23, 2011 at 1:36 pm

Late last night after the House sh*t sandwich CR had passed in the House, Boehner sent out a tweet saying that the Senate should act quickly to pass it. I tweeted him back that it is DOA in the Senate, told him he’d be responsible for a government shutdown and said good luck with that. He and the republicans deliberately passed a bill with cuts knowing it was going nowhere in the Senate. How tone deaf can a group of individuals be? The Senate form of the bill contained NO cuts and had bi-partisan support.

Stupidity or guts, I can’t tell where they fall sometimes. They stubbornly stick to their platform even if most Americans reject it. Dems like Landraue? and Webb and others run for the hills. If they’re not talking negatively about the president’s Jobs Bill, they’re silent. This makes me wonder if Rethugs generally have their politcal believes in concrete terms than we do.

You know one thing that I have observed about the politics that are being played out during POB’s presidency from the right, littlemindness. Everything they do that would help people who are hurting now, they oppose it. It is like playing with some of your childhood friends when they never wanted to share their toys, their marbles, their funny books, their jump ropes, their bikes, their pennies to buy cookies, or their little penny pieces of candy. And most of the time, you looked at them and wondered why not? Or you tried to show them that they still would have some cookies or candy left in their bags, but it was still no. Soon you realize that there was something within their core that made them who they were. Really. Someone had made their minds to be trained to be selfish and small. They was why some of us cried, ran home, gave up on them, tried to talk with them about it, or just gave us and walked away to try to figure them all out. So or later my parents and grandparents told me who I was, how I became who I was, and how I could take that good at my core and really help someone else because they said that there were so many more people who were holding bags of candy, bags of cookies, comic books, amd many colorful marbles who were eager to share with me and my core values. So never give up, but always seek those out who had those same core values and we all could make a beautiful difference in the world someday. And you know what my brother and I did just that. And I thank God for my precious hardworking and loving mother, father, and grandparents. Otherwise, both our hearts would be so hollow and our deeds would be so shallow and very selfish. So let us look for those wonderful people who have some great cores within and who willingly share their cookies, pennies, marbles, candy, and comic books. Remember how so many of us could live off of cookies, candy, and reading comic books? Because we were sharing our precious gifts. Then the results we had right within our core, the ability to love, laugh, and live. We do not see a lot of that anymore in our politicians. Oh, maybe a few and ONE for sure, President Barack H. Obama! Let help him to share with millions of others all over this country and the world, from our little bags of candy, cookies, comic books, and marbles. Maybe we will bring back a shiny smile that will light up some little child’s life, schoolroom, teachers’ heart, policemen and women lives, construction workers lives, firemen/women lives, farmers lives, medical researchers lives, nurses lives, special education children’s lives, and so many seniors lives. We caa do this with two men like President Barack Obama and Joe Biden in 2012. Let us smile again. Remember, President’s grandmother said to him as they were closing a phone call after he had made a speech? He said , she said,”Barry, smile more.” I just completed an excellent book where a friend of his mother’s said,”When Barack smiles, he lights up the room just like Ann did. I see Ann in him everytime I see him smile on tv.” Let us share him with the world continually by helping him to get re-elected in 2012. We saw what our choices are from last night’s debate(or was that really a debate or a circus)Sorry about that one. Then looking at the mean spirits on the House floor late into the evening and then the Senate this morning, we must get President Obama re-elected. Love you all, but I just needed to say this. We need so much real loving and compassion in our country. We already have the brains, but we need the brains with the love all wrapped in one, PBO. Love you all so much,HZ
