*The Brent Spence Bridge Speech* sounds like a good title for a southern novel!

Wonderful speech, Mr. President, and the crowd sure enjoyed it!

I didn’t know until I saw it on LOD’s show that Dick Gregory was in Texas this week, protesting the scheduled execution of the man convicted in the 1998 dragging death of James Byrd. Gregory also was on a hunger strike. He said, in a statement about it:

“Christians can’t cry over the crucifixion of Christ and still be for the death penalty.”

I saw an article that said, “Before taking part in the hunger strike and protest, Gregory laid a wreath Tuesday at the cemetery plot where Byrd is buried.”

Thanks – once again – Mr. Gregory, for walking the walk.

I also heard that Byrd’s son was against the man being put to death. Now think about the anger from the family of the officer who was killed. They couldn’t wait for Daves to be put to death.

Up until yesterday, I always said I was against the death penalty (from a practical perspective, mostly because of the false convictions and racism in the statistics) – but wondered if I would feel the same way if my son or grandchildren were killed by somebody. Would I want to see them executed? But something hit me yesterday, and now I know I could NEVER live with myself if I were involved in any way in urging an execution. NEVER.

Smiley and West alert, but just had to post this.

Thinking of the fact Dick Gregory, nearly 80 years old, is still fighting the good fight, I remembered his brilliance at Smiley’s ’08 State of the Black Union event. I rounded up the two-part video of his appearance. The first part is hysterical, but it’s the second part I remember – if you can’t spare the time to watch both of these again, check out Part 2, beginning at the 3:20 mark:

    Part 1:

    Part 2:

Excellent speech Mr President! Liked how he got into the groove when they chanted “pass this bill”. He’s so cute. I didn’t like how those vehicles were passing by him. They were too close to him. I know the SS probably was out there but it looked dangerous.

Oh no. PBO messed up the Warren Buffett secretary’s tax example. Instead he said “Warren Buffett’s secretary shouldn’t be paying lower taxes than Warren Buffett. Oops. The very opposite of what he meant to say.

HAHAHA!!! I saw that. think the people knew what he meant and didn’t seem to mind though. Everyone seemed to genuinely love this speech. Even Rachel Maddow and her sidekick Chris Hayes had nothing but praise for the speech and even for the President as a “brilliant politician” as Chris Hayes put it.

They probably didn’t care cause they knew what he meant.
