This is just unbelievable news – saw it on Twitter. So sorry for the entire Kennedy family.

Also understand that Vice President Mondale’s daughter, Eleanor Mondale, passed away. That’s also tragic news for the Mondale family.

      • September 17, 2011 at 12:53 pm

Wow—couldn’t believe the news about Eleanor Mondale too. Knew her well in Chgo area, 1st marriage (of 3) was to Chgo Bear, Keith Van Horne. Just checked and she died of brain cancer which she had been dealing with for a few years. She was a beautiful, spirited gal, lived quite the adventurous life, was currently living with 3rd husband, a musician, on a farm in Mn. raising miniature horses and other assorted rescues. Lots of sad news, people dying too young.

    • September 17, 2011 at 11:57 am

Oh my. That’s so sad. The Kennedys / Shrivers always seem to be plagued by death or misfortune. May the lord bless and keep them.

OFA Ohio has been registering youth voters at the Ohio State Buckeyesโ€™ football games on Saturday afternoons. This will not stop. When a couple hundred thousand converge on campus every home Saturday it turns into a city of its own. Great way to get progressive voters on board. That being said the Prez is SO inspiring with his TIRELESS work. Not only is he working hard to improve our economy, but he is working hard to make this a more peaceful world.

The MSM (especially MSNBC) has upped their attack mode with new AAโ€™s (Chris Hayes) taking over weekend slots to BASH PBO. They do not like the 92% approval ratings that he is getting from the AA community in the latest polls. They donโ€™t like that he is still ahead of all GOP (including a generic ballot) candidates in most polls, he is at 57% with the Latino vote and still has a plurality with Jewish voters at 53%. Inspite of all their constant BLASTING of this President he still holds his own with his BASE.

It is obvious Rachel Maddows and her MSNBC henchmen would like Mitt Romney as the nominee and for the race to be as close as possible by next fall. PBO would defeat Michelle Bachmann in a landslide and have a better chance at defeating Perry comfortably with his extreme views. So effectively we can have another Bush 2000 where the election is stolen. We ground and internet troops must help PBO all we can. Rev. Al Sharpton is his only ally on TV. This kind of focused propoganda is UNPRECEDENTED in US politics. The Rich and Powerful are going to any lengths to make sure PBO does not get another 4 years. It is the PEOPLE who will have to rise up for the CHAMPION of the middle and working classes. We in Ohio arenโ€™t giving up. The fight has just BEGUN. KEEP HOPE ALIVE!! YES WE CAN!! YES WE DID!! and YES WE WILL AGAIN!! Obama/Biden 2012!!

I posted this on what I thought was the latest thread but it was actually 2 back, Whew – chips is fast

    Good Morning TOD Family

So sorry to hear about the death of Kara Kennedy. My thoughts and prayers are with her husband and children.

I wanted to talk about a meeting I attended last night. A group of women gathered to hear Congresswoman Jackie Spier speak about Womens Health Issues. She was wonderful. Planned Parenthood sponsored the event and the Director of Planned Parenthood was also wonderful.

The Planned Parenthood director praised the health care law and its latest decision to make Birth control free, she was very supportive of Obama.

Next came Noreen Evans who is a California state senator โ€“ she talked about how before the health care law was passed only 12% of the basic coverage plans covered maternity and prenatal services and now โ€“ because of health care all policies will have to include it.

Then after getting lost for half and hour (the meeting was in a business park that is really hard to find) in comes a bundle of energy โ€“ Jackie Speir โ€“ she started her speech by stating she wanted us to get โ€œhot and botheredโ€ and we did. She told one particular story I wanted to share

After her speech on the House floor where she explained how she had undergone a second trimester abortion, she told us she received thousands of emails from folks who had been in a similar situation. She also realized how important a speech on the house floor could be.

As a very Junior Congressperson she does not have appointments to important committees so she is often frustrated at her inability to get things done. Jackie serves on a committee that oversees the military. She learned that only 13% of women and men who are raped in the military report the crime. They report the crime to their commanding officer, who doesnโ€™t like to report it since it reflects badly on their ability to control their troops. Folks who report rape are often discharged with an honorable discharge that states they had personality conflicts with their fellow soldiers. She shared a few stories of rape where commanding officers said โ€œwork it out with the person who assaulted you, or go home and sleep it off.โ€ the stores were horrifying.

So Jackie started to share stories of these rapes on the floor of congress, one per week. She did this for about 6 weeks, then right before the Congressional recess in August she received a call from Leon Panettaโ€™s office that he would like to meet with her after the recess. Then in mid August she got another call, inviting her to come to the Pentagon during the recess. She and 2 other Dem. met with Panetta over the break and she feels that he is sincere in trying to change the reporting system for rape so it can be handled more appropriately.

All of this because she shared personal stories on the floor of the House.

At the end of her speech I asked her what we could do to help, she said everyone in the room needed to be actively engaged in the political process, needed to engage our friends and family who live in other parts of the country (I think she said that because where we live is so blue) and to elect more women to Congress.

    She ended with a quote

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
    Margaret Mead
    US anthropologist & popularizer of anthropology (1901 โ€“ 1978)

We must never doubt that what we do here at the Obama Diary is important, we must keep our focus, be ready to work when called, support each other and with the help of our President โ€“ we will change the world. No doubt about it.

Ha! See? That’s what I’m talking about! That’s how to do it. You never know how you will affect others. Your voice could be the voice of reason in a sea of craziness that gets heard and resonates. Just like Speiers and how she bent the ear of Penetta by just sharing stories. That’s amazing. thanks WIW.

This is amazing – and why haven’t we heard from this woman sooner? There are many Democrats who make their voices heard, but the vehicles for projecting those voices don’t exist. The media isn’t interested in relaying the truth to Americans, and making the truth clear. That’s not their agenda.

I applaud Rep Jackie Speir – that was heartfelt, direct and entirely appropriate. Halliburton is an excellent example – many don’t like what they’ve done, and the deaths they’ve caused are real deaths to real people who are serving their country and don’t expect to die from an American company’s negligence. If the “pro-lifers” were legitimate, they would be calling for the end of Halliburton for their illegal acts that have cost human lives for the sake of greed, not just the end of abortion, which is legal.

Rep Speir was excellent in this floor speech.I’m going to keep my eye on her. Many in the California delegation are superb and focused on working hard for Americans. (And many are not – e.g. Maxine Waters).

Much sadness today with the loss of these young women. Death opens a new door for them, but closes one to those who are left behind. My thoughts of healing and prayers of comfort to those in grief.

Just stands as a reminder that time is precious, we don’t get to decide the amount of time we are afforded, but we can control the quality of the time and the purposes for which we engage it.

I have listened to Jackie Speiers speak on the House floor, she is a committed and compassionate voice, especially for women. She strikes me as a very good representative.

As to Granny..all I can say is “Go, Granny Go! These pictures, and so many countless others reveal the heart and spirit that President Obama is able to connect to and with, not just in Americans, but in people all around the world. Can’t fake that …it’s the real deal!

  12. September 17, 2011 at 1:17 pm

And I see Chuck Percy has died, a decent and moderate Republican, the kind which no longer exists, who represented Illinois as Senator for 20 years, often mentioned as a presidential candidate. He was friends with the Kennedy family and was the first to recommend John Paul Stevens to the Ct. of Appeals in Illinois, who later became the liberal Sup. Ct. justice. of course. He also had tragedy in his family when one of his twin daughters was murdered in her bed, the crime never solved. He was 91 and had recently been suffering from Alzeiheimers. It’s interesting to read this Chgo Trib accounting of his life, how so much has changed in the Republican Party. It’s been radicalized from what it once was.

Desertflower – this just made my day –

I will be chanting this to myself as I work on web pages – “boehner’s being primaried neener neener neener”

      Karma in action

My favorite part of the article was Boehner’s approval numbers

“In an August poll, Boehner had just a 34% approval rating in his home state of Ohio. He had a 47% disapproval rating. He will be vulnerable and a challenger from the right is sure to impact his support.”

Is there anyone on the blog from Boehners Ohio district? It would be wonderful to hear what the Dems are doing and if they can exploit this challenge from the right.

YEA!!! Crazy, huh? No wonder the man is running scared. If he were smart, he would ignore the lunatics and do right by his constituents and support PBO’s Job’s Bill….but he’s NOT smart, and we all know that when you try and act from a place of fear, it NEVER comes out right. For anyone.
That said, would love to know what Dems in that area can do to our benefit in that area:) Kind of ironic that he’s getting primaried from a Teabagger:) Under his watch, the congress’ rating is the lowest it has EVER BEEN. 12% really sucks.
