oh rachel……..

So, Rachel Maddow says the President has achieved nothing legislatively?

Well, someone disagrees with you, Rachel….

****

By the way, in the video above she, rightly, describes the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act as “historic” …. “a bill that had languished in Congress for years, the start of much more legislative achievement to come”.

But this is what her Firebagger buddy and former hard right Republican Cenk Uygur had to say about it:

More here

How progressive of him!

I’d guess if it was a (current) Republican, rather than a firebagger fraud like Uygur, who sneeringly described legislation aimed at guaranteeing equal play for women as “minor”, Rachel would have called him out on it….

Oh well.

Is there a quote to what she said. I can’t imagine she’d flat out say Obama and Dems accomplished nothing. Could she have been saying Obama and Dems accomplished nothing last night ie it was just a speech and nothing was voted into law ie the GOP will block it or Obama will give in meme she likes to push?

This is the same Madcow who one year ago redid President Obama’s Oval Office address as if SHE were the one sitting in that chair and made herself look completely foolish. This is the same Madcow who praised President Obama for repealing DADT, then shat on him when he didn’t come out in full force of gay marriage happening in New York. She has had endless bitchfits about President Obama, so it’s hard not to be surprised that she’d say that President Obama and the Democrats accomplished nothing because she is JEALOUS that President Obama is more popular, while she is but a tiny mouse in comparison.

Her rant that fateful Saturday night before the vote in NY: a carefully crafted deal had been struck with a governor who has immense power. Horse trading was rampant between the projects Cuomo could give to Republicans in exchange for their vote on marriage equality.

The President came as close to saying he supported NY marriage equality without saying it, understanding that that’s all Cuomo and the Democrats needed was for him to become a lightning rod the night before the vote. By NOT jumping on the grandstand he assured passage of that bill.

It was this issue that turned me against Rachel Maddow. I could no longer trust her intelligence, her judgment or even her motives. All liberal Americans, and especially gay Americans and their friends and families, should have done nothing but celebrate the repeal of DADT, which was accomplished with a good dose of political capital from this President. When Rachel jumped into the swamp with the firebaggers on that issue, I lost it. Not fast enough? Not good enough? It was going to collapse because Obama hadn’t done enough?!?! Has Rachel thanked the President for potentially sacrificing the debt ceiling extension in Dec. 2010 in order to repeal DADT? Has she acknowledged that it was Gates who wouldn’t go the extra mile to certify it, something that was done with great diligence by Panetta?

If there has been a PL in the 1930’s like we have now, there would have been no second term for Roosevelt.

Rachel Maddow has behaved shamefully in my opinion. I have lost all respect for her and more importantly, she has lost my trust.

Rachel is very intelligent and does excellent research with clips proving hypocrisy on the opponent’s side, YET she seems emotionally immature which offsets her positive side making her more like Ed Schultz who seems totally geared to his emotional side. Ed does not seem to have an intelectual side at all. I expect him to scream that Prez Obama should go walk the picket lines, go to Wisconsin, and stand up and fight regardless of how the outcome would come out. I expect that of Ed Schultz and that is why I don’t watch or listen to him. I expect more of Rachel since she is smart so am doubly disappointed in her when she goes with her emotional side. I still think she is better than most in the arena and think we need to catch her emotional rants and correct her rather than get rid of her.

She acted so childishly by making the NYC gay marriage bill about Obama, instead of celebrating the victory. That was the night I stopped watching her show. Have not watched it since and never will. That is really the root of her Obama bashiing. That he is not yet completely on board with the concept of gay marriage. She is like a pouting toddler. She also referred to him as a “boy king”.

As I keep on pointing out, Madcow and the rest of the professional left loons are JEALOUS of what this President has achieved. It’s also because of these loudmouth unprofessional left losers that our side ends up losing more than it should.

This President got the American Recovery Act which helped put a lot of Americans back to work, the American Care Act which insured 30 million new folks that didn’t have health insurance before, repealed DADT, appointed two healthy Supreme Court justices, and ordered a bunch of bullets to be placed in Osama bin Laden’s skull, which is VERY IMPORTANT given that the 10 year anniversary of that tragic event is on Sunday. But instead of jumping up for joy and bragging about those accomplishments and others, the left fuckheads like Madcow choose to bitch bitch bitch… and they wonder why middle folks dislike anything associated with the words “liberal/progressive. ”

It’s not that the right wing makes “liberal/progressive” bad words, it’s these loudmouth kooks that make the word bad because all they do is bitch and continue to whine about what they didn’t get. They SUCK at politics, because politics has ALWAYS ALWAYS been about the art of compromise… even their “hero” FDR wasn’t exactly a “liberal icon” that they should be bragging and boasting about.

The reason why a lot of what President Obama has achieved has polled badly is because of the inaccuracies placed out there… not just by the right wing, but also by these ignoramuses on the left, like Madcow. When your average voter, who is NOT well versed in politics hears the right wing saying that President Obama has achieved nothing, then they hear the same coming out of the left wing loudmouths, then what are these average voters choice to conclude other than Obama sucks? Madcow and the left need to learn about WINNING, meaning you have to actually WIN elections to do what you want… and I don’t recall when Madcow or the left won an election. They just seemed to hop onboard the Obama Express back in 2008, but after then, thought they could sit on their asses and President Obama would do everything. That’s the thing that these “progressives” fail to comprehend, that progress is a continuing process, and that they actually have to WORK to continue to make progress. Saying that President Obama is weak and has achieved NOTHING does nothing to achieve progress, except in the eyes of the right, whose sole mission is to make him a one term President. The more I hear it, the more that the professional left = the right wing, it’s the same exact message, Obama sucks, Democrats suck, difference is the right wing continues to win elections at the expense of these clowns on the left.

When Madcow and the rest of the professional left comprehend the concept of WINNING ELECTIONS and aiming the fire towards the right, as well as reporting the FACTS about what President Obama has achieved and not their narcissistic opinions, then they can join the adult table and be a welcomed force. Until then, they need to be placed in timeout and ignored, because all they are doing is depressing and misleading voters and being counterproductive to the causes they supposedly champion and stand for.

And I’m not surprised that the professional left hasn’t yet labeled Elizabeth Warren as a brainwashed Obamabot corporatist right wing Republican sellout, because she’s done nothing but say nice things about President Obama and defended him when none of the professional left would. I mean, they’re labeling Reverend Al a brainwashed Obamabot corporatist right wing Republican sellout because he defends President Obama, but not Elizabeth Warren. It truly makes you wonder how any of them believe that they are political geniuses/experts.

I have suspected for a long time that the so called Republicans journalists/moderators switched to Democrats may have only done it because the Right was too full of journalists and the only place with room was on the Left. They gladly switched for the money but their true idealogy is founded in the Right. Not sure if it is an actual out and out intention to still support the Right or if it is embedded within them. Think about it this way, Rachel Maddow has been invited to the White House to meet with the president……Jane Hamsher and friends…..not so much.

I am working as a community organizer and most of my time is spent discussing with our fellows the latest Rachel Maddow or Ed Shultz show or things like that where the President’s policies are denounced. Unfortunately, on the ground, I can see exactly what you are describing. We often look at the Right wing who simply swallow everything said by their pundits like Rush Limbaugh and we comment on how amazing it is that they don’t ever question the twisted logic and defamation. I am now aware that people on the Left side of the equation have not been questioning their sources the last two and a half years. This has been taking its toll on our accomplishments. Every time someone they follow puts out a scathing criticism it seems to sap the energy in the group and people stop participating. We have to work doubly hard to connect with them and get them back. I have started connecting the dots. Pundits on the Left have a great deal of influence and discussing their talking points takes tremendous time and energy that could be better spent studying the actual policies and forming one’s own opinion. I would rather people’s concerns be channeled directly to those who could answer factually than have to first deal with the spin. Its exhausting and not unlike the feeling you have when you have to first talk to a Right wing person about the latest Fox news propaganda before you can get down to just the facts of the issues and weighing in on how you feel about them.

I’m telling ya’ll Rachel from the get has came across as smug and snide.. have merely seen clips here and there of her but personally cannot take her any better than any of the other mouths on tv. And now she has proven to anyone who watches her – that she will blatantly lie.. anyone still tuning in after this ought to expect nothing but iffy bs from her. Madcow and the professional left claim to hate the tactics of Rush Limbaugh and the right wing, but they engage in the exact same tactics to demonize us who call out the professional left for their behavior and lies. They just won’t admit that they’re jealous that the right wing bully tactics have worked for the right wing for decades, and instead of fighting and combating the right, they are aiding and abetting the right by calling President Obama weak and spineless.

After Thursday night what little professional respect I had for Rachel and Lawrence is gone. I could not believe what came out their mouths. It is obvious to me they have an agenda. The same for Ed but we all knew that.

    • September 9, 2011 at 11:42 pm

I don’t even watch any of it and I’m already sick of their opinions. In fact, Opinion TV in general is off-the-charts useless. I blame Reality TV. They’lre all just a bunch of people who love to talk and/or fight. Obnoxious and toxic.

    • 41 chiara
      September 10, 2011 at 2:23 am

Wow, it’s so bizarre to me that two people can watch the same thing and have such different reactions from it. I didn’t find her commentary particularly negative and as far as Lawrence goes I think he just got too far into the “process” weeds. He kept wanting to talk about all the ways that this could get bogged down in the various committees and because he has experience there he got too wonky and was throwing cold water on the speech but what he said may very well be true and the president knows it that’s why he’s already out there talking to the people.

I do find Ed to be over the top but mostly because I don’t find his (or Chris’) analysis to be that intelligent or insightful. He has passion and he believes in what he’s doing and I can value that because he is definitely fighting for the right things but I just disagree with him on some things.

I watch both Lawrence and Rachel almost daily and there is no way you could make them out to be anything other left leaning Democrats who for the most part support the president in almost all ways. I personally don’t want my news source to be only a cheerleader or propaganda for my side (that’s what Fox news is for conservatives), I want them to give me their take, give me their expertise and if I don’t agree with one of their opinions I’m ok with that but I do value much of what they have to say and certainly any experience they have to share. But, that’s just me.

      • September 10, 2011 at 7:36 am

What were Rachel’s exact words? did she say Pres. Obama hadn’t achieved anything legislation or is she being taken out of context?

        • 43 chiara
          September 10, 2011 at 2:19 pm

So my reply here is to a comment about her conduct on Thursday after the speech and my take on it, which was different from Betty’s Girl’s take.

As far as the headline of this thread, I watched the video and not only did she not say anything about not achieving anything legislatively she pretty much did the opposite. I’m think the headline must be reference something else and then Chips is using the video to demonstrate that Rachel says one thing one day and something else another. The video is from 2010. But I don’t know where they are getting the line about “achieving nothing legislatively”, I really can’t imagine her saying that about the president.

Personally I watch her almost every day and find her quite rational and thoughtful. No I don’t agree with her on all her points and when she is critical of the president, which I find to be far less than she is supportive, I take it in and make my own judgement as to whether I agree with her, but her analysis is usually pretty fine.

I think what worries me a little is that when things get so rigid that even the most slight criticism of the something the president has or has not done turns into a reason to never listen to that person again, I think that is a sure way to miss some really good information. Rachel is not Ed, Rachel is not a Firebagger. She really is on the side of the president there is no doubt about that, and she is definitely left of him but she is a journalist who can really inform well and who looks at thing many in the beltway media do not. We shouldn’t block out the voices on the left who actually are reasonable and incredibly smart just because occasionally we don’t agree and we certainly shouldn’t lump them in with the Cenk Uygur’s of the world who I really never heard give one word of thoughtful or insightful analysis to anything.

      • 44 cuphalffull
        September 10, 2011 at 10:29 am

After having read your comment my thoughts are trending toward the problem not being so much the messenger but the receiver. How do we become better critical listeners in general? When I hear an opinion piece how do I place that information in the proper perspective as I try to formulate my own opinion. It’s what I greatly admire about the President. I feel he respects my ability to form my own opinion on the merits of each case and that he has the responsibility to give me the resources to do just that. Maybe that’s the whole answer to doing a good job of organizing. Instead of just “myth busting” maybe we should be working to inoculate ourselves from being reactionary.

        September 10, 2011 at 1:43 pm

I agree with you, Chiara as I watched my Tivoed part and did not see the problem that is being portrayed here. It seemed to start with the complaint about the saying Chris Matthews said concerning Give Em Hell, Barry. Many who did not watch it lambasted both Chris and Rachel for saying that and without seeing the context it did not make sense. The saying came from Harry Truman’s calling out the GOP and doing a whistle stop train trip to take the problem of the Congress to the people. Someone said Give Em Hell, Harry. He replied I don’t give them Hell I just say it as it is and they think they are in Hell. (Or something to that effect.) The use of Barry instead of Harry was a compliment in this context and only worked due to rhyming. From there the conversation went into the negative against the moderators. I watched and thought they were all very supportive of PBO’s speech. Whether anything will change or not is still up in the air especially with the current past behavior of the Congress. It is my hope that WE can make the change happen by supporting our President and calling, writing and emailing our legislators. By all means do the same with the journalists but be sure you actually see what is said before you jump in.

I think Rachel can be great one day and totally off the next. Sure, many times I don’t agree with her, but she seems to balance it out the next day. Strange. I actually thought the documentary with Richard Engel about 9/11was quite good, sad how that day changed so much here – and not in a good way. It really is worth watching.

Now Cenk is a totally different story, I was so glad when I saw you posted something about him. Thought I was the only one! I really was shocked when he actually got on MSNBC. SO happy when he got the pink slip. (Of course he tells it differently). Then he tried to suck up to KO. Guess Current didn’t even want him. He is all about the money, no doubt. Now get this, he’s in an idiotic contest to get his face on a billboard in Times Square.

Just because (I know, I know, just couldn’t help it), I voted for some random person. I thought anyone but Cenk. Haha, he must have really come unglued when Rev Al ended up in that slot! The site that is doing this for whatever reason is http://blog.about.me/2011/08/23/be-the-face-of-about-me-and-star-on-our-times-square-billboard/

And what about DR? Does anyone actually watch him? I turned him on for a nano second to see what he had to say about PBO’s fabulous speech. Must have had total brain fog. Hope he’s the next to go!

Rachel is no PL. I thank God that she is there. I find her more watchable than any pundit on TV, period. She gets riled up about certian issues, sure. She says snarky, silly stuff sometimes, sure. Pointing out that she might have contradicted herself at one time or another is fine. Beating her up and trying to drive her ratings down is misguided. Comparing her to Hamsher is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY of the mark. My two cents.

My two cents, too, Left-Indie. I have not abandoned Rachel since she made her remarks about the President not supporting gay marriage. She was right. He does not….at this time. He supports gay rights as a civil rights issue and I remember the President in an interview somewhere discussing gay marriage as a states issue and also a matter of semantics. Marriage vs civil unions. Church vs state. That was my impression. He said he is evolving. But, let’s face it. He’s also a politician and he can only say and do what he can get away with.

I have always felt that Rachel is still very aware of the administration’s accomplishments. There are other clips of her updating the list of accomplishments.

I watched Cenk for a few weeks before I declared him too ill-informed for my taste. I tolerated Ed a little longer, but I can’t take the constant anger. I hated that he went to Madison, WI and ranted about conservatives and liberals. Many there were not liberals & I can’t help but suspect he may have turned off some people.

I could never tolerate Dylan Ratigan…ever. One minute of his faux outrage was enough for a lifetime. He is a Wall St insider and I reject anyone who does a “rant” segment after spending his whole time ranting. And, I still tolerate Lawrence even though he’s a terrible predictor of what’s going to happen.

Stopped watching Morning Joe long ago. Nothing being learned there and can’t stand watching Mika tolerating the treatment she gets there. She’s too meek for my taste. I won’t read her book. If she’s an example of knowing your value, I think women are in trouble.

There isn’t much to tolerate anymore. The pundits never get it right. They are less informed than their viewers. They have no memory or even an historical reference. Everything is presented only for heightened drama and effect.

So, I rely on other means to get my news. Like the blog roll Chips has here and twitter for links to other articles. I trust certain journos more than others even when I think they got something wrong.

But, this is America. This is democracy. I have choices and I choose not to watch. Although I must confess I did get hooked on the coverage of Balloon Boy but I digress….
