‘us exports hit record high’

BBC: US exports hit a record high in July, pushing the country’s trade deficit down to its lowest level in three months, official figures have shown. Led by strong overseas sales of manufactured goods, US exports rose 3.8% to $178bn (£111bn), said the Commerce Department.

At the same time, imports fell 0.2% to $222.8bn, helped by a fall in the price of oil reducing the cost of the US’s crude imports. The trade gap fell 13.1% to $44.8bn.

The figures will be welcome news for President Barack Obama, who is set to give a speech on job creation later today.

Obama Earns Money For U.S. By Appearing In Japanese Television Commercial
According to aides, the advertisement will air nationally throughout Japan and will feature the president endorsing a savory, stick-shaped cracker snack manufactured by the Ezaki Glico corporation, which agreed to pay Obama a one-time fee of $300,000 plus residuals, compensation to be used exclusively for U.S. economic stimulus purposes.

OT—-I don’t know who thought this was a good idea, but whomever it is was sadly mistaken. Joe Scarborough was just on The View “singing” his original 9/11 song. It was excruciating, flat on every note, even with a guitar and a backup singer. Ay yi yi. And Whoopi just called him “a performer”—-if she meant a “singing performer”, that is quite a stretch. Hopefully she meant political talk show host performer. Prior to regaling us with song, he did a smackdown of Perry, noting the stupidity of his soc. sec. ponzi scheme stance etc., and he placed Romney up there on a too high, false pedestal, calling him the steady, calm middle of the road choice. I expect Repub political operatives will be hammering this same message home. They want the executioner gone.

I want the executioner gone, too!

If I’m recalling correctly, Joe and Mika went to the Romney home during a previous campaign and Mrs. Romney served them breakfast. I think. One free breakfast (or free cup of Starbucks) and Joe is yours. I don’t think the guy has any friends, tell ya the truth.

Did anyone see the composite sketch of Jack the Ripper on the internet last week….I don’t remember where I saw it, only that it looked like,,wait for it…..Joe Scarborough to me. Joe is gasbag who he thinks he knows everything. As for me, I so badly want Perry to be the nominee (even though it might eventually be Romney) so that Texans can stop suffering under his regressive rules.

    • September 8, 2011 at 12:51 pm

Once Joe gets it, that’s the word. He and FOX are two sides of the same coin. He is the first in the so-called Liberal media to get the GOP talking points. He massages it into the heads of his panel and they run with it.

He likes to call himself middle of the road, but that is a flat out fabrication. As we can see from Ut’s excellent daily summarization of his show, he is GOP through and through masqurading as a moderate.

He is a complete mouthpiece for the Republican party, and to boot, he is very, very thin-skinned.

And Joe’s the one who admitted to Jay Leno or Bill Maher that he has to do what the NBC executives say he has to do … they’ve apparently taken him in the back room and chastised him for something or other. Probably his bad breath.

Dems need to start pointing out private sector vs public sector employment numbers. What would the UE rate be if public sector jobs were at 2008 levels? How can President Obama be accountable to Walker, Scott, Kasich, Christie and the rest of the States slashing State jobs? Or the GOP forcing spending cuts to federal programs that result in job loss?

Extreme Liberal makes it plain. A must read.

The level of disrespect being shown towards President Obama is unprecedented and has to stop. It comes in both blatant and subtle ways and there are many reasons for it. Anyone who is honest with themselves knows that a lot of it stems from the color of his skin. Not all of it, for sure, but a whole hell of a lot of it. We all remember the signs from the Tea Party asking for their country back…back from what, you motherfuckers, the man won a clear victory in a democratic election with a wide electoral margin. President Obama IS the leader or OUR country, all of us, even you racist assholes…whether you like it or not.
What drives me absolutely nuts about this phenomenon in politics is that President Obama is deserving of more respect than any president in my lifetime. He has avoided attacking Republicans, much to the chagrin of the far left, since he began running for president. He has kept his rhetoric respectful, even for people that probably don’t deserve that respect. Remember his dressing down of the clown Donald Trump, he was even tactful about that. So when people try to say that he doesn’t deserve their respect or that he has brought it on himself, I have to pound my head on the desk and wonder what in the fuck is wrong with these people. This president has gone out of his way to represent everyone in this country and treat all people with respect, even those not deserving of it…yet, he is enduring the worst lack of respect of any president in our history.

Go read this most excellent piece at The People’s View that lays out what President Obama has done for of all our people…in the face of the most obstructionist congress in our history. The man deserves more respect than any president in history, now give it to him, damn it!

I’m not sure I would have just let them skip it. It would have further illustrated how unserious the GOP is if many skipped it. Of course this is probably for the best because the MSM would have spun it as President Obama being weak rather than calling out the GOP for skipping it.

Gallup tracking shows Obama’s approval rating up six points in two weeks. Not sure why, but there it is

This is why Gallup daily/weekly tracking is pointless. President Obama tanks for no reason and now gets a bump that is equally unexplainable. Is this a Hurricane response bump? Kids going back to school bump? End of silly season bump? Anti-Rick Perry bump?

      All of the above?

I wonder if the MSM will breathlessly cover this?

      • September 8, 2011 at 1:27 pm

“I wonder if the MSM will breathlessly cover this?” Errr Do pigs fly?

Your point about the pointlessness of Gallup is spot on and I think applies to others, too. When I used to spend a lot of time at TPM, I saw the same thing. It was crazy. There was nothing happening but the polls would just go from one end to the other.

My motto: I don’t get too high or too low about the polls, especially not this far in the game.

“Today the President called Texas Governor Rick Perry to express his concern for citizens of Texas impacted by the unprecedented fires,” a statement from the White House said Wednesday evening.
But the call from Mr. Obama had to be even more jarring, coming just hours before Mr. Perry’s debate debut.

Such calls from presidents to governors are fairly routine after natural disasters. But there’s little routine about such a call between two men who may just face each other as rivals next year.

“The President also assured the Governor that requests for additional assistance, including as recovery begins, would be quickly assessed,” the White House statement said.

More positive news about the Affordable Care Act:

/// “Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that more seniors and people with disabilities on Medicare are seeing reduced costs for important health care — through both discounts on brand-name drugs in the Medicare Part D “donut hole” coverage gap and free preventive care.

“Today’s news confirms that the Affordable Care Act is saving money for millions of seniors and people with disabilities who are enrolled in Medicare,” said CMS Administrator Donald M. Berwick, M.D. “These new benefits are encouraging patients to talk to their doctors about their care, and to get the preventive services they need.” ” ///

Indeed, my family is living testimony:

My husband is disabled. One of his medications cost hundreds of dollars, needless to say we didn’t have the money to buy it. His nurse and social worker just tried before to get samples or sometimes we just went without.

Now, he pays nearly nothing for the medication.

ACA works!!! For me, being unemployed, the community clinic sees me and I pay on a sliding scale, which is barely nothing. My medication starts at $4.

I swear up and down by ACA.

      Thanks for sharing this, Hope!!

Berwick must be near the end of his appointment, as recess appointments only last a year. No way he gets through the Senate, and recess appointments are seemingly forever a thing of the past (I certainly hope the Dems don’t roll over on this ever and allow them again under a Republican President). Probably another spot the GOP will force to be left open.

Good Morning Chips and TOD Family. Hope all is well within our family. Hugs go out to Sue as well Let’s keep Sue in our thoughts and send good energy toward Sue today. Also thanks for the post concerning the decision made by the three judges in the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va. The three judges who ruled in the case were two Obama appointments and one by Clinton. Diane Motz of BaltimoreClinton 1994; Andre Davis of Baltimore (Obama) and James Wynn of Raleigh(Obama). Read the case files:Virginia v. Sebelius and Liberty v. Geitheir. We need to continue to contact our Senators and support Chairman Leahy and Harry to get these other nominations voted on. There are 20 right now that are waiting for a vote. Yes, I know judges are nonpartisan, but we need level headed, fair, lawful judges on the bench. Let us keep working on the nominations in waiting. Those within our family who are in the legal field, let’s get to work. We need eexcellent judges appointed by this President to get a fair hearing, voted out of committee and on for a fair vote in the Senate. We have work to do. Love you all back.HZ

MoveOn is launching a campaign as follows:

Donate to Stop the Republican Onslaught in the States
Republican governors and state legislators are pushing a frightening far-right agenda to slash funding for public education, cut off Medicaid for millions of poor and elderly people, and more. We’ve launched an innovative new strategy to bring MoveOn-style online campaigns to the states that are under siege. Can you make a monthly contribution to support our work? We’ll bill your credit card today and on the 3rd of every month going forward. You can stop at any time. You can also make a one-time contribution, but your monthly gift will make a big difference.
