    Raise a Toast to Labor and Piss on the Tea Party’s Grave
    ============================================

    Perhaps by then and for enough people the nihilistic platforms of the Tea Party’s presidential hopefuls will have been exposed for what they are. The promotion of greedy corporations and the greedy ultra-rich over the welfare of the American people, the fashioning of an anti-government narrative with the government, not these immoral forces of greed, as the enemy – a complete reversal of nature. Perhaps enough people will realize that without the federal government, nothing will stand between these rapacious forces and us, and realize that without the federal government, our children will be back at work in factories, without the benefit of health care and we the American people will carry the burden alone, carrying the rich on our backs, reduced to Old World serfdom.

    Perhaps. But all that depends upon us standing up against chaos. Whether there be gods or no, we must play the part of gods, because unless you believe divine beings are going to fly to our rescue at our moment of greatest need, we are all that stands between chaos and the abyss. Sure, we can go down fighting the good fight, satisfied that we did our best, but wouldn’t you prefer to lift a toast to labor and live to piss it on the Tea Party’s grave? That, my friends, is living.

    Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi

    MAKE IT IN AMERICA
    ==================

    Make it in America is a legislative initiative from House Democrats to revitalize manufacturing in America, create new good-paying jobs, and make our nation more secure. By rebuilding our manufacturing sector—which was hit particularly hard during the Bush Administration when America lost nearly a third of its manufacturing jobs—we can create the high-skill, high-wage jobs of the future while promoting American competitiveness, innovation, and exports. When we Make it in America, we create jobs to lead the world economy. This effort builds on House Democrats’ actions to create jobs and grow the economy and focuses on investing in key priorities while cutting wasteful spending.

    The Make it in America agenda:

    Closes tax loopholes that encourage outsourcing U.S. jobs overseas.

    Provides hometown tax credits to help small businesses hire new employees and sell their products and innovation overseas.

    Boosts incentives to create American clean energy jobs like making state-of-the-art wind turbines and solar panels–paid for by ending
    corporate welfare to Big Oil.

    Strengthens rules that U.S. and its contractors buy American, especially to build transportation, energy, and communications infrastructure.

    Demands that China and other countries honor fair trade principles or lose American business.

    Gives incentives to hire and retrain America’s returning veterans for new clean energy jobs.

    Strengthens partnerships with businesses to retrain America’s workers for jobs for the jobs that are actually needed.

      LadyHawke…thank you so much for posting this here. This site is invaluable…I often forget to check and see what she has posted, but this site is a fabulous tool and a plethora of information! Even notes what percentage of Republicans voted AGAINST these measures to move America forward!

      In 2012 we need to make sure that Nancy Pelosi will again be the Speaker of the House and that Democrats control the agenda.
      Without that, the President will face more endless battles and will not be able to push his agenda for a sustainable economy, a healthier planet and a more stable, more democratic world. We all need to do our part, reconcile our differences and move in a united way. We need the leadership of our great President, but we have to be participants, not just observers.

    Ok I am in a fog…woke up thinking today was 9/11…..

    I hope everyone in our family enjoys a day of respite and community with family and friends. Looking forward to the event in DTW.

    As a former union contract worker from first hand experience, I know the importance of unions. Union jobs are not cushy, over paid, underworked positions…..that is what the Fat Cats at the Top would like to lead you to believe.
    Unions simply give those without power a safety net of support and representation, they value the human aspects of the labor force. We must ensure that workers have a voice. Please support our unions.

    Did I miss HZ in the last 24 hours…hope she is OK.

      I swear Sue in M, we partly share a brain! 😉 I woke up thinking about HZ, and was reading down the threads to see if I’d missed her before asking if she had left a message. Sure hope she is not in any pain and is with family (where there is no access, maybe) for the long weekend.

I am going to hope she is busy with the real world working her cocoa buttered legs and setting the world straight all at the same time. I absolutely adore her, and miss her when she isn’t with us. Just concerned.

    President Obama Comforts New Jersey Irene Victims: It’s Called Leadership
    ==========================================================

    Your President urged Republicans not to “play politics” with aid to Hurricane Irene ravaged areas as he visited New Jersey today. Clearly he was aiming that warning at Eric Hostage Taker Cantor, who has said he would like a redoux of his debt ceiling debacle with emergency aid now being tied to the “budget” (this is code for how to take money from the people and funnel it to corporations, thereby privatizing the federal government).
    .
    .
    Locals were deeply moved by Obama’s visit, “It will go down in history,” said Charlotte Shepperson, 51, who waited for a glimpse of the president’s motorcade. “Someone cared enough from the White House to come here.”

    • September 5, 2011 at 11:45 am

      My greatest puzzlement is this – why are they allowed to still collect their salary? They’re not working. They set their own appearance hours. They are blatantly standing in the way of progress. They publicly thumb their noses at those they promised to serve. Yet they regularly receive a salary that most of us could only dream about. Even when Republicans threaten to shut down government I doubt their salary would be affected. If you and I performed a fraction as dismally as they do at our jobs we would be fired. It makes no sense to me that the entire country is not crying out that these guys have passed their ‘best by’ date. If Americans return these incompetents to their positions in the next election, it will tell the world a lot about the sanity of the country IMO.

    Labor Day: Brought To You In Part By The Enemy
    ======================================

    It all started back in the early 1800′s. The rich got richer and the poor stayed poor. Companies would hire children as early as 8, probably even younger. There was no minimum wage and employees didn’t even need to be paid in cash, they could pay in vouchers you could only spend with them. It was widespread and organized manslaughter. People could be tried with a criminal offense or potentially even killed for simply asking for better working conditions (like maybe conditions where you could kiss your wife goodbye and feel confident you’ll be able to greet her by coming home later in the day). It was a crime to try to unionize. In the mid 1800′s laborers started to band together and organize to fight for better conditions. This began the first unions.

    Census Data Reveal Fundamental Tax Mismatch in Texas

    Click to access tx_povertyday_0910.pdf

    CPAC 2008 :: Former Governor Mitt Romney
    “The threat to our culture comes from within. In the 1960s there were welfare programs that created a culture of poverty in our country. Now some people think we won that battle when we reformed welfare, but the liberals haven’t give up. At every turn they try to substitute government largess for individual responsibility. They fight to strip work requirements from welfare, to put more people on Medicaid and remove more and more people from having to pay any income tax whatsoever. Dependency is death to initiative, risk taking and opportunity. Dependency is culture killing. It’s a drug. We have got to fight it like the poison it is.”

      Perry is skipping his SECOND Republican debate or forum? Chicken! If he’s afraid of his fellow candidates, how scared would he be of President Barack Obama?

      • September 5, 2011 at 11:07 am

        He always runs from debates. He wouldn’t even debate Bill White last year. He probably sees he has the momentum and doesn’t want to crash and burn in a debate and end it.

        I believe Romney changed his plans to attend the DeMint forum – we could see a set-up here. Perry bails with this excuse, Romney can’t get out now.

    EPA Smog Rules Freakout is Ridiculous
    ==============================

    The president has chosen to push for jobs — green jobs — building and maintaining roads and rails and bridges and sidewalks. All of those things enjoy enthusiastic bipartisan support among voters. They also have enormous consequences for how much fuel America burns and how much pollution we create.

    Obama is leveraging the Department of Transportation for a very progressive agenda, but you wouldn’t know it from listening to progressives over the last few days. They are always in their issue-silos, unable to see a larger picture than their own narrow field of concern and quick to react with outrage.

    The EPA isn’t the only cabinet agency that can effect environmental change for the environment. In many cases, it may not even be the most effective one for accomplishing progressive environmental goals. It is already a target of bipartisan opposition, and that is the simple calculus of the congress Obama has.

    So stop saying he isn’t smart. Stop saying he has no strategy. Above all, stop the idiotic sports metaphors. All the calls to “go long” are like fans upset because Joe Montana has thrown ten short completions in a row instead of a bomb, and that he doesn’t play quarterback and tackle and wideout and placekick all at the same time.

    MSNBC is saying the President is “facing a tough crowd” in Detroit.

    First of all, I pray for him to have a successful trip.

    Secondly, I’m thinking the good people of Detroit will welcome him with open arms. It’s a prelude to his jobs speech on Thursday, so it should be well received, since his words and actions are honest and sincere. (I’m not minimizing the effect unemployment has had on Detroit and other cities; just hoping this is a magnificent event.)

      The media is really pushing the notion that unions no longer support the President. I have no doubt some of the nonsense that has come out of Trumka’s mouth lately has something to do with it. This may not sound nice but as the wife a union member and mother of 3 union members I will say the crowd damn well better be supportive of the President. They either sat home in the last election or voted republican causing a lot of these problems themselves. They also are well aware of the fact that the President can not magically give them job. I am off my soap box now.

    Reflecting on a ‘cultural shift’ on Labor Day
    =================================

    Hostility towards workers isn’t new, especially from the right, but given the recent shift in the political winds, it’s getting more intense. When congressional Republicans talk about eliminating “regulations” as a central facet of their economic policy, they’re often talking about scrapping safeguards intended to protect workers. When Republican governors target collective bargaining rights, they’re not even being subtle about attacking unions, usually school teachers. When there are disputes over trade agreements, GOP officials generally refuse to even consider measures with Democratic provisions providing federal assistance to displaced workers.

    And if there’s a Republican White House in 2013, responsible for enforcing existing labor protections, we can expect conditions to deteriorate further.

    Enjoy Labor Day, my friends, while it lasts.

    Detroit is able to celebrate Labor Day today because the President authorized loans to the Big Three with stipulations. They came through and now are having record sales. I doubt that the president will face a “tough” crowd…..Detroit has been through many hard times, this last one nearly sank them, and I think they know who has their back! In addition….the Tigers beat the White Sox last night 18-2….that has to make for a good feeling in the city.

    I used the CBS Ustream link that JER gave yesterday in the Obama’s Sunday Schedule Thread and I got the Detroit Rally. Hoffa is speaking now.

    I am not savvy enough to link it.

  30. September 5, 2011 at 12:37 pm

    CNN has opened a livestream for the Detroit Labor Day event:

    is there a Usteam working.The one JER posted is telling me that I need to install pluggins and it refuses 🙄

    Sarah Palin is despicable, which I know is not shocking news to anyone. She’s in NH at a tea party rally now screeching that she warned us about Barack Obama, that we should have paid attention to her, that after he’s done “parting the waters”, all he’s doing is growing govt. and dictating to you. She wants to take our country back and a bunch of stuff about freedoms, the usual, and God has shed his grace on thee, media is telling tea party to “go to hell” but they’re still standing strong, America is being transformed into something unrecognizable, used the word “refudiate” again with a toss of her head proudly, crowd now yelling “run for president” (horrors), President Obama is engaged in things that don’r make sense, keeps calling Obama “unvetted” and a part of the “crony capitalism”, Obama keeps spending more, keeps growing govt., tea party can’t tolerate business as usual, “free men and free markets” is what the tea party is about and why it keeps getting mocked, tea party stands for truth and what is right, now comparing tea party to Abe Lincoln, omg, “they” can mock us and call us names but they can’t stop us, let them laugh while “we” (tea party) get about the business of saving America, independents should be flocking to the tea party, help to replace Obama, calling tea party the “peoples’ movement”, now talking about raising the flag at Iwo Jima, free and strong and proud Americans, God bless you Tea Party Americans! Oh brother—–don’t know what she’s doing, grifting for dough or —-looked to me like a campaign speech and courting tea party.

    Sick of CNN…..We need to tweet @CNN…Have you lost your mind..that you rather give someone,,(not running for public office) a divider, hate monger, time on national TV, while A Leader of the free world, A sitting President of the USA, is out there uniting, comforting, working 24/7 for a better America? Are you serious??

    If you want to avoid wading through all the RW propaganda, it looks like C-SPAN will be streaming the Detroit speech live too.

    Just went to check if CSPAN is playing the celebration of Am Workers yet and noticed in the related links on the page promoting the event was a link for Romney’s jobs plan! We know what is plan is, just look what he did in MA. I was tempted to click but didn’t want to give the farce that I know it is the clicks toward legitimacy. He’s even following PBO around on the webz

      Good catch LS, I didn’t notice that today, but I’ve definitely seen links to Romney stuff on other sites where I went to read something about the President.

    I just don’t understand how when Teahadists insult the President in a speech Mark Knoller calls it a “rousing” speech yet when a Democrat stands up and gives it right back to them he calls it “partisan” ? I just don’t get it;I really don’t . . .

    screw CNN they’ve turned into Fox-light since last year and gawd how many times can Pierce Morgan parade John Huntsman and every goddamn Teahadists on the planet and all we got on the Democratic side is Bill Maher mocking the President? 🙄

  38. September 5, 2011 at 12:49 pm

    What the heck? Can CNN be any more obvious? Utterly ridiculous. In the meantime, I’m watching the Aretha on streaming vid. She looks and sounds so good!

    So, last week- talking to Veterans, President Obama reiterated that ALL US troops will be out of Iraq in a couple of months!
    One of the jackals said to jay carney, that things are getting worse there and he basically said his sources are stellar!
    Jay kind of mocked his sources- pointing to the fact that Iraqis are in the lead for security and No US troops died there last month! First time that has happened!
    Hello!

    Also, oddly enough, Jessica Yeltsin said that the presidents approval rating in Michigan is just 34%!
    how can that be? He saved the auto industry! Is the swift boating working?

    • 177 hopefruit2
      September 5, 2011 at 1:29 pm

      No, it’s not working – rather, the media is showing it’s desperation slip by citing slanted polls to spin a false narrative. Has Ms. Yeltsin cited the corresponding approvals for John Boehner, and the Repubs in congress??? What about Walker? What about the GOP presidential candidates?

      Did CNN cite New Hampshire’s approval rating for Sarah Palin? She’s giving a hate speech there.

      Jovie these are the kinds of questions we need to ask the MSM when they breathlessly cite another one of their slanted polls about the President. Don’t simply repeat what they said – hold them accountable and demand that whenever they cite a presidential poll, they need to cite the corresponding polls for the GOP “leaders” and candidates.

    4 More Years… 4 More Years!!!

  67. September 5, 2011 at 1:45 pm

    It’s time to move folks. Registration of voters should begin now. ACORN is gone and it’s now up to us. The cycle of apathy must be broken.
    The Presidents election broke up the rights plans to reduce the middle class to serfs and servants. They have corrupted our government on the municipal, state, and federal levels.
    Knowing how they plan to roll dictate what our moves should be. We must halt the spread of the cancer that is the republiCON party

    WOW!!! Just watched PBO’s Labor Day speech in Detroit. PBO is definitely FIRED UP!!!!! The crowd was FIRED UP!!!!! I am FIRED UP and READY TO GO!!! Made me happy to see him there rested and in his element. Loved it when the crowd kept shouting “FOUR MORE YEARS” before and during his speech. He simply blows away anyone else in the field even before he begins his campaign. All of the MSM, firebagger and teabagger rhetoric just vaporizes in his presence and they cannot shield his brilliant light from the American people.
    Obama/Biden 2012
    FIRED UP and READY TO GO!!!

  69. September 5, 2011 at 2:18 pm

    Wow! 21.5 Mil viewers streaming and over 16k in the crowd. All ahead full!
