detroit, labor day – meet the base ;-)

Text of speech here

President Obama embraces UAW member Ghana Goodwin-Dye who introduced him during a Labor Day speech at Detroit’s Renaissance Center, headquarters of General Motors, Sept. 5

Freep.com: In perhaps some of his strongest words of support for organized labor, President Barack Obama told a riverfront crowd of thousands in Detroit today that “As long as I’m in the White House, I’m going to stand up for collective bargaining.”

He said organized labor is responsible for the rise of the middle class and the core of the nation’s economy and that legislative battles to curb the rights of organized labor is a threat to the nation as a whole.

“When I hear they’re trying to take collective bargaining away, trying to pass right to work laws, I know it’s not about economics it’s about politics,” he said, prompting a chant from the crowd of “Four more years.”

Lots of love on display. That last gal has on a wedding ring, but she looked like she was going to hang on to Obama and never let go. Which is understandable.

Makes a joke of the primary Obama crowd at Salon and @TullyCast: we are fired up and will expand the ground game to get not only 4 more years but a Democratic Congress. Give Nancy back the gavel! We are diverse, we are America, and we want four more for 44.

      September 5, 2011 at 3:31 pm

Yep, four more years for you Mr. President. I will do everything I can to make sure you are back at the WH working tirelessly for us. Besides, what else would the PL complain about without you?

They’d have to go underground and whisper their complaints in fear that the RW would through them in jail if they protested, chainned themselves to the WH, and never be invited on RW teevee to complain about them.

    • September 5, 2011 at 3:31 pm

I’m gonna tweet the shit outta that!!!

  11. September 5, 2011 at 3:06 pm

Now I know I read someplace that the glow was gone from our President Obama. That he wasn’t drawing any crowds anymore (yeah right) (sarcasm) looks like more than a few thousand to me. And look at their faces 🙂 WOW He went there today. Thursday is going to be off the hook. Our guy gave and gave, now its time for the other party to give back. And if President Obama can mobilize the masses behind him. I know he will. Then it’s on.

    • September 5, 2011 at 3:09 pm

I also read that it was the AA vote that put him in the Whitehouse and that he has a problem with white men in the 40-50 range. I sure do see lots of white middle aged men in that crowd.

    • September 5, 2011 at 3:16 pm

He said something very interesting today: “we’re not going to wait for congress”. He’ll go there on Thursday and they’ll say their usual no, and then, I suspect that he’s got a rabbit.

      • September 5, 2011 at 3:23 pm

You know what? I think he is going to ask the Federal Reserve to put together a national infrastructure bank. I don’t know if it’s legal, for them to do that, but that was one thought I had. And I think he is going to go through the tax code and close a lot of the loopholes, and use that money to pay for his jobs plan. Just a thought. Because I think he said the hell with it. I’m going BIG. I pray he have learned his lesson fooling with the other side.

        • September 5, 2011 at 3:27 pm

I hope he’s going big. I really do. People will stand with him even if none of this can pass congress. At least it’ll be clear to them who’s on their side.

          • September 5, 2011 at 3:32 pm

He just said a million construction workers are out of work and need work. So that lets me know he’s got something at least for a million construction workers. And you know with them working that will trickle down to other businesses. So that was a great tidbit. I think that will pass, if nothing else do. If those fools in congress want to be reelected.

Imagine all those unemployed construction workers marching on Washington, or their congress persons office. Yeah I think it will pass LOL

            Glad to see you BWD.

Me too. I think he is fed up with the house republicans. He’s tried working with them and all they got are tax cuts for the wealthy. I wonder if some of these nutjobs who had town halls listened to their constituents. They want jobs and if all they come up with is naming post offices, defunding healthcare for the middle class, and tax cuts….they are toast. I hope PBO tells the American people to contact their house representatives and demand to implement the Presidents program.

Me, too. The love that would flow to this President if his plan is what SHOULD be done would be immense. I have supported and I do not regret for one second that support, his “politics is what is possible” approach. But we all have to learn and adjust. There is nothing this batshit crazy Congress is going to do to support this President and the good of the country unless we remind Americans of what SHOULD be done.

There is no common ground with these loons unless the public demands that. That process starts with President Obama delivering a plan of action that will bring back this country’s strength and greatness. Let the people do the rest, but give them a specific dream to fight for.

The country will love him and there will be no looking back — his second term is assured.

        September 5, 2011 at 3:40 pm

I’d read this earlier in the week but I never underestimate what all this President has planned until it surfaces and then sometimes it even takes me awhile to realize the genius of it (and I’m an unabashed Obot!)

        http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2011/09/obama-rolls-out-a-jobs-plan-that-doesnt-need-congress/244420/

        • 59 Um No
          September 5, 2011 at 4:48 pm

No genius there, sorry. Don’t listen to the National Journal. They don’t know what they’re talking about.

That executive order only applies to spending that’s already been appropriated by congress. It doesn’t “go around congress.” It doesn’t create new spending initiatives. PBO can’t “go around congress.” They will have to pass something new. The republican House will have to pass something new.

Which means the President will need all the support possible to get it done. There’s no “working around congress.” No magic executive order. Just big confrontational politicking in full view of the american people, to beat back those sabotaging republicans and help get folks back to work.

          • September 5, 2011 at 5:42 pm

Um No, that’s not the National Journal. It’s The Atlantic article in which the author, Fawn Johnson, explains that the president is asking his departments to find what funds they had already appropriated and in hand to work on things like infrastructure. It was directed to the departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, and Transportation. They’d be asked to select up to three high-priority infrastructure projects that can be completed within the control and jurisdiction of the federal government.

They’ve probably already been asked. I doubt that he would announce something like that before he knew it would be actually workable. And it might not be all he’s proposing.

            • 61 Um No
              September 5, 2011 at 7:54 pm

“Fawn Johnson is a correspondent for National Journal.” Says so right in the header. I assume the National Journal and the Atlantic are owned by the same conglomerate.

The point is, like you said, that the executive order is neither a “big jobs initiative” nor does it “go around congress.” It’s a misleading premise. It just cuts down departmental red tape for projects that have already been authorized. Getting projects started faster doesn’t create more jobs, it creates the previously expected number of new jobs quicker. All I’m saying.

We need to help the President pass things through congress, not expect that some workaround exists otherwise.

                September 6, 2011 at 1:41 am

They are owned by the same company. It’s important to not confuse Atlantic Monthly and Washington Monthly. That being said some very important journalism has come out of Atlantic Monthly. Washington Monthly is definitely left of center, Steven Benen being a fantastic advocate for honest progressivism and our President. He is one of my go-to reads throughout the day, usually linking from TOD.

The Atlantic Monthly has an esteemed history being founded in the 1850 by Harriet Beecher Stowe, among others.

In the last photo the SS agent looks like he is reaching to pull PBO back. That women was holding on to him to tight and too close. I am always afraid that we someone does this that they may accidently trip and pull him down causing others to fall on and possibly injure him and others. This kind of behavior must drive the SS crazy. It is one thing to be enthusiastic, this goes too far; not only is this the President of the United States, this is someone’s husband and two someone’s father; she should not be all up on him like this.

I missed the speech, but thanks everyone for the play by play comments and thanks to Chips for getting the pics so soon. Hope everyone is having a great Labor Day (that crowd sure did).

I had to laugh when the president gave his teaser/commercial for the speech on Thursday.

Yep. These teabaggers fight mandates to pay for health insurance, but they want to mandate little girls get vaccinated in Texas so that his buddies at Merck can get rich and give him kick backs. I don’t know how he got re-elected after coming out with that mandate that, thank god, failed.

This particular topic was covered in her post of Aug16, 2011, “Perry’s Executive Order on Gardasil, Proves He is a Corrupt Bastard”
This is wrong on many levels, not the least of which is the shared benefits of crony capitalism between Perry and Merck.

I think Obama supporters should have a “unity sign”…. when we pass each other in the public square, when we see a bumper sticker on a car, a t-shirt in the street….a quiet form of acknowledgement and a reminder of our collective efforts and unity. I am serious.
Our movement isn’t underground, but it is openly being denied by the MSM, and derided by the Tea-haters, according to them we have all abandoned our ‘weak, bumbling,in over his head leader.’ I say it sucks to be a FOOL! Hope they are able to get up after the knockout punch that is heading their way. BAM as in O-BAM-A all the way to 2016.

Hoffa: ‘Let’s Take These Sons Of Bitches Out!’
Teamsters President Jimmy Hoffa didn’t mince words when warming up the crowd before President Obama’s pro-union speech in Detroit Monday.

Hoffa described the recent Republican-led assaults on collective bargaining rights as a “war on workers” and described Obama as union workers’ general who will lead them to victory in 2012 over the Tea Party and like-minded allies.

“President Obama, this is your army,” Hoffa said. “We are ready to march. Let’s take these sons of bitches out and give America back to an America where we belong.”

The rest of Hoffa’s red-meat rhetoric at a pro-union Labor Day rally.

“We got to keep an eye on the battle that we face: The war on workers. And you see it everywhere, it is the Tea Party. And you know, there is only one way to beat and win that war. The one thing about working people is we like a good fight. And you know what? They’ve got a war, they got a war with us and there’s only going to be one winner. It’s going to be the workers of Michigan, and America. We’re going to win that war.”

“GOP 2012: CHASING THE TEA PARTY”
    ================================

    This DemRapidResponse ad starts with

THE TEA PARTY – How extreme is their agenda?

The ad then gives some pretty good examples of extreme ideology and ends with

So this LABOR DAY, instead of talking about JOBS, they’re courting the TEA PARTY.

    • 191 bonkers
      September 5, 2011 at 4:39 pm

Ugh. I wish people would stop using that name “tea party.” These are REPUBLICANS through and through with this extreme ideology. The Repub Party needs to branded with this craziness. They borne and nurtured The Crazy. They own it. They ARE it.

They shouldn’t be allowed to separate themselves from it by giving it a different name. Plus, they’ve bastardized what the original Boston Tea Party was all about anyway. I refuse to call these hateful nutjobs the “Tea Party.” They have nothing to do with the original Boston Tea Partiers and should not be allowed to claim some connection with those brave people in American history.

          Precisely, JoJo.

The ad is doing just what needs to be done, equating Republican == Tea Party. Indistinguishable. It is essential to do so now, unrelentingly. We, thereby, forge a synonymous relationship and solidify the meme that Republicans are radical, rabid ideologues dedicated to crushing the middle class and doing whatever else it takes to ensure the dominance of the ultra-wealthy.

        September 5, 2011 at 5:25 pm

True – if someone says they’re a Republican, then they’re a member of the tea party, since they’re one in the same. They can’t pretend to be a thinking, caring, logical, civilized human being when everything they trade on and bank on is greed, racism, hate, stupidity and all manner of negative things. They are the same party – that’s why they have a majority in the House. If they want to differentiate themselves, then they have to give up the majority and declare a separate, third party. If someone calls themselves a Republican, then they are branding themselves with all the evil of the tea party – no way out.

He states that President Obama had a horrible summer. I don’t think so. All of this is created by the media. It is rather glaring and even the average American voter has to start to see the FRAUD and DECEPTION going on in the MSM. September 5, 2011 at 5:23 pm

You’re right Keith. His summer wasn’t any more “Godawful” than that of the Repubs. He came out less bruised in the debt ceiling negotiation than Boehner and the Tea Party. On the other hand, the Repubs have a flailing presidential field, dealt with angry townhalls, and saw plunging approvals for John Boehner and other Repubs in congress. Their desire to see Hurricane Irene become “Obama’s Katrina” was met with resounding competence and skill from the administration. Sarah Palin’s bus tour and movie were both abject FAILURES. But the MSM refuses to discuss any of that.

I like and respect Jonathon Alter, I do not agree with his description of this past summer as being God awful, at least not in the way that he is suggesting. Perhaps if he wants to be more accurate he could use that tern in reference to those that dared to play hostage with the lives and well being of the American people and the world. God awful is a pretty accurate description of the Republicans and their America hating agenda.

I can’t wait any longer for the MSM to do the job that I reasonably expected them to do. I am done with wondering why, how come or when. They are writing their own scripts, their own narratives….frankly with few individual exceptions they are not journalists. And it appears they have little concern for integrity, or even the perception of integrity.

Whatever their justification……they are IMO a giant FAIL!

Obama Rocks the Motor City With Promise To Stand With Unions

    ==================================================

The President dedicated the day to the non-elite, shouting, “The working men and women of America, this day belongs to you!” He pointed out that the cornerstone of the middle class was built by the union, and that a critical and all-American aspect of the union is that union members watch out for each other and their brothers and sisters who are not in unions, but are still benefiting from the rights of union members.

President Obama pointed out that the “some were blaming” the working people for the poor economy, but the economy is stronger when workers are paid a decent wage and pointed out that unions are about “shared prosperity”.

It looks like the Republicans have a few powerful narratives to kill this week, and even worse for them, it looks like their big dreams of knocking out labor and the middle class and thereby killing the largest support of the Democratic Party has failed.

The biggest point the President made in his speech is that he supports the middle class, the workers, and the right to collectively bargain. Obama
pledged, “As long as I’m in the White House, I’m going to stand up for collective bargaining!” To which the crowd roared back, “Four more years!”

Hoffa never used any reference to using guns in a way that Palin did with her graphic map reference of people who were in the cross hairs of rifle targets. FOX aught to be ashamed for trying to distort news. This is once again their tactic of picking a minor incident to try to gin up controversy to overshadow the fact that President Obama, despite all the false memes of him loosing his base, received an enthusiastic welcome, and very passionate support, from tens of thousands of people in Detroit, including members of Labor Unions.

It would be sweet if this leads to Bush/Cheney. Bushes “ownership society” that cut red tape, forbid states to stop these preditory loans, and gave the green light for these “liar lowns” that the mortgage brokers and banks cooked up. The only problem is they never changed the language that you will be prosecuted if anything on those loan documents were false. No one bothered to read the small print when they lied about how much money they made with those “stated” income policies. Talk about shock and awe….go get em Mr. Holder. I’m pretty sure that none of the idiots running against President Obama for 2012 will challenge any of the lies in Romney’s so-called plan (since they all read off the same playbook), but Romney’s opening the door for people to question why he wasn’t able to bring this same jobs plan to the people of Massachusetts when he was Governor, since the state was 47th out of 50 in job creation… This should be a fun week.

You’re right….the Tea-O-P took the bait. They’re getting their message out first only for the president teams to slam it because it will be 100% tax cuts and deregulation.

Timing is everything…and things happen for a reason…I am so glad that the job speech is after the Repubs debate…I am sure he will have to re-edit some of the prepared draft….and will knock them out by every word they utter….Where they can never take it back on national TV.
PBO…is always ahead of the game…..while everyone was nit picking on time….PBO is always on Time 🙂

So true – the whole “speechgate” nonsense now seems to have been some pretty smart strategizing from the Administration. First, the GOP have shown themselves to once again be the racists that people are now realizing they are, with no respect for the Office of the President – and I think they’ll have to be on their good behavior at the Joint Congress address, so they don’t reinforce that image – a lot of people were angry. Second, the scandal heightened everyone’s awareness that the speech is even happening (including those who were worried their football would be pre-empted), and emphasized again that the GOP is not focused on jobs. Third, the GOP “debate” is now going to be scrutinized for evidence of a jobs plan (this might be wishful thinking on my part). Fourth, The football viewing crowd will have their TV’s on, and most likely will be at home or someplace where they can see the game, and the speech.

He might have taken a hit in the eyes of some who want tough talk, but as a move in the long game, it was quite brilliant. And the President didn’t utter a word.

Remember during the debt ceiling talks PBO said “Can they say yes to anything?” I think he probably knew Boehner would balk at the Wednesday request and he would actually get what he wanted anyway. PBO is always miles ahead of the stupid T-Repubs.

PBO just put Repubs on notice with this line here:-)

But we’re not going to wait for them. We’re going to see if we’ve got some straight shooters in Congress. We’re going to see if congressional Republicans will put country before party. We’ll give them a plan, and then we’ll say, do you want to create jobs? Then put our construction workers back to work rebuilding America. Do you want to help our companies succeed? Open up new markets for them to sell their products. You want — you say you’re the party of tax cuts? Well then, prove you’ll fight just as hard for tax cuts for middle-class families as you do for oil companies and the most affluent Americans. (Applause.) Show us what you got.

We must get out and Vote for President Obama, and Democrats in State and Local elections for 2012. Only then can we move USA forward & Impeach Clarence Thomas, allowing Pres Obama to appoint total of 3 Supreme Court Justices. VOTE and get frinds to do same

Now, the tea baggers are mad about what Hoffa said! Calling on the president to condemn him and all unions!

Not only does PBO stands with UNIONS…He backs it up with Legislation he passed during his first term:-)

And I want everybody here to know, as long as I’m in the White House I’m going to stand up for collective bargaining.

That’s why we’ve reversed harmful decisions that were designed to undermine those rights. That’s why we passed the Fair Pay Act to stop pay discrimination. That’s why we appointed people who are actually fulfilling their responsibilities to make sure that the offices and factories and mines workers that clock in each day, that they’re actually safe on the job.

And we’re going to keep at it. Because having a voice on the job and a chance to organize and a chance to negotiate for a fair day’s pay after a hard day’s work, that is the right of every man and woman in America — not just the CEO in the corner office, but also the janitor who cleans that office after the CEO goes home. Everybody has got the same right.

Kasai…I ‘ve always loved this song! And then to hear Luther Vandross yesterday signing “Ain’t No Stop’ in US Now”……perfect campaign song. Lots of very fond memories from younger days. Music is spirit, powerful, powerful spirit.

Well let’s come up with one and spread it around. I’m thinking the ‘ohm’ sign ….thumb to fore finger (forms an O) make it and raise it.
And be sure to throw in a smile.

Thanks for the video Chips. I got goose bumps listening to that chant – 4 more years, 4 more years, 4 more years.
But for the President to achieve 4 more years and ALL good thinking voters really need to GO OUT AND VOTE in 2012. If you don’t vote, the President may not get that additional 4 years.
4 more years, 4 more years, 4 more years.

If the Democrats could get the base to make it to the polls during mid term elections we would be in great shape. The base has to be motivated by their local and state politicians as well as the President.
