Desert in reading this paragraph…All I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!!! America is one lucky country on this planet earth to have such a Leader!

In May 2009, the Obama administration conducted a simulation exercise around the possibility of a Category 3 hurricane hitting New York City, White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters Friday.

The National Level Exercise, as it is known, was part of a coordinated effort by federal officials to prepare for a variety of disaster scenarios, including one very similar to what is likely to take place this weekend. President Obama himself participated in the exercise, one of the first of its kind by the new administration.

        Chipsticks-

I’m Paddy from over at The Political Carnival. Since way back in the campaign I’ve been posting a link list (usually about 13 links long so ppl can catch up if they need to) at the OFA site. Since the last change, I’ve had intermittent problems posting, and now (even after the blog mistress Jess chasing me down and begging me to come back) I still cannot post the link list. A couple of posters suggested I put the list over here, but I didn’t want to do so without your permission. I see that a few things I post would be doubles of yours, but I can always just not add them to the list. Mostlyt stuff reflecting polls, decisions and oppo crap.

        Let me know-

        Paddy.

          Hiya Paddy,

Jeez, don’t talk to me about webby problems, this place is the definition of ‘glitch’!

I’d be more than thrilled for you to post your link list here, no need at all to ask for permission – I’ll fiddle about with the list to exclude doubles, then I’ll update the blogroll.

Thanks so much Paddy, really appreciate you dropping in.

As long as you are in a safe structure with water and a light source you will be fine. Just hang in there and know that it will eventually pass and the skies will be bright and calm.

Just a tip for if you loose power and have to live by candlelight: Placing any light source (such as a candle) in front of a mirror increases the amount of light in the room. That way you not only have more light in the room but your candles or kerosene lamps go further.

Those of you along the east coast, may you be safe and able to get some little rest in between the winds, rains and worry. The night will probably seem very long, yet know that you are in the thoughts of the rest of the nation and the world.

  5. August 27, 2011 at 8:25 pm

    Hi Everyone

Have not been at the blog all day – but I have a really good excuse, and a wonderful story to share.

I am working with the Save the American Dream movement (powered by MoveOn), and we were asked to attend a counter protest to the Tea Party rally that was held in Napa Ca. The Tea Party is starting a national bus tour from Napa to Florida. Here are the important points I came away from the event with.

    1. There were 250 protestors, groups of all types came together, Sonoma MoveOn (my folks), Napa Move On, Sonoma Democratic Club, Napa Democrats, Iron Workers of America (from Oakland) San Francisco Move On, the Green party, California Teachers, Napa / Solano fireman. Labor Councils from all over the bay area.

    2. The Tea Party had advertised the event as drawing 10,000 – the crowd was 6-8 hundred including several vendors who were selling Tea Party accessories. They had 2 large busses, I do not know if they filled them.

    3. As I talked to union members, progressive Dems, and average folks from Napa – NOT ONE PERSON criticized the President. There is no “Obama Disappointment ” among the rank and file. In fact for 2 hours we chanted and protested and during that time we shouted many slogans “Jobs not cuts” “Tea Party Go Home” but by far one of the loudest and most heartfelt chants was “O -ba -ma”. Folks were decked out in the new Obama T-shirts, there were very cute tote bags with Michelle “First Lady of Fantastic” and 2012 bumper stickers were being handed out like candy. Trumka and the Political left can take a hike. The base has got his back.

    4. I share this story not only because it is encouraging, but also because I am asking you to consider getting involved with the American Dream Movement which is led by Van Jones. I know from BWDs site that MoveOn has done some destructive things in the past and I am guessing they will probably do some dumb things in the future. But right now they are doing a good thing by promoting the American Dream movement. A while back I showed a video of folks who were protesting a Boehners office and ended up kicking his locked door (that was mOveOn and the American Dream movement). Most of the townhalls where the congressman is being questioned is from the mOveOn and the American Dream movement. I encourage you to visit this website, and sign the Contract for the American Dream petition. http://rebuildthedream.com/

    5. My last comment is this. We need to be out there, working the phones at OFA, protesting on the street, going door to door. When we do that (and I know that most of the folks on this blog have done way more than I have for the President and the Democratic cause) – WE NEED TO POST HERE. When we share our stories, others are inspired and they are just a bit more likely to take the plunge and join a rally or go volunteer at Dem headquarters. It would also be neat to know what is happening in other parts of the country. So share your stories here…..please…..

You are awesome in everyway, I sincerely mean that. I’ll look into The American Dream locally….I definitely want to get into the streets.
Thank you for always bringing the positive, and inspiring us as you do. What you do is of enormous benefit and I don’t think should be underestimated by anyone, especially you. You are a rock star WiW, thanks for being in the trenches.

I have to agree. WiW has been steadily building a positive resource base from I ‘met’ her over at BWD’s place. Though I don’t leave a comment I periodically drop in to her site and the message is always uplifting. Thank you for your vision and your persistence, WiW; may you see your impact growing as the 2012 campaign gears up and moves into full gear.

Wow. Thanks for the GREAT work WiW and for reporting the real news on the ground. I’m glad to know that there are many real progressives out there who are standing firm behind the President and aren’t like the emoprogs out there whining about everything. The teabaggers had their day in the sun; had their 15 minutes of fame, but now that more and more Americans are being exposed to their duplicitous and abhorent nature and their willingness to wreck the country because of their obsessive hate against President Obama, their influence among the mainstream is beginning to dwindle in credible numbers. Once again, thank you for going out there and fighting the good fight and thanks for your wonderful report.

Awesome what is working. I will do that next time we call bank. We really need to get started registering voters in Florida. The laws are so hard to keep up with because they keep changing.

    • August 27, 2011 at 9:54 pm

I’m actually very proud of Van Jones because he is doing what every member of the PL should be doing. He often told them to stop waiting on the President to do all the work. He told them that they should walk with him on issues they agree and move ahead of him on issues that you don’t , etc. I like that he is so proactive. I get so angry when I see comments from people refusing to do anything until Obama does xyz. I mean, how are you sitting there telling me that you care about the American people but won’t lift a finger because Pres. Obama hasn’t done something for YOU lately?

We had a successful house meeting tonight, our hostess plied us with delicious Mexican food and tres leches cake. Scheduled a volunteer shift , several one on ones and collected a nice pile of I’m in cards. Very productive night led by a wonderful hostess. I think everyone here would be pleased about the level of support for the President, some of the guests didn’t attend the political part of the evening but they let us know that they are behind him for 2012. What the media reports and what is actually taking place on the ground are not necessarily one and the same thing. Obama Biden 2012.

I am so glad to hear you saying this because I have been aware that MoveOn has been helping a lot more these days and have wondered if it is the Van Jones influence. I have been coming to the same conclusion regarding your comment. They were good, they lost their way, they’ve been making their way back. And yes I’m sure there will be things in the future that don’t sit well, but we really need their reach, energy and creativity. And I really love their creativity. lol

Dag, but the things we can do when we come together in the right spirit! It seems the guiding light in this new and improved organization is Van Jones. PLEASE don’t read this as a diss on the wonderful people within the group. Not all are frustrati, it’s just that the frustrati are loudest and get all the coverage.

I remember Van Jones saying -when he gave up waiting for confirmation to the admin- that he felt he could do more if he moved on (no pun intended) A lot of the frustrati said Pres. Obama threw him under the bus, but he shot that down immediately.

It is my hope that as we get closer to campaign mode most of these groups which propelled us to victory in 2008 will come together again. It’s how we win.

      • August 27, 2011 at 11:51 pm

I am willing to give Move On another chance. They were awesome for the 2008 campaign. I phone banked every single weekend for them and they were spot on. They funded tons of ads, etc. I unsubscribed to their emails because I did not like the direction they were going but with Van Jones, and The American Dream organization, I really think it is a winning combination. Arizona is also so much better with a new leader of the Democratic Party so I am really encouraged.

Really really disheartening. Bush was warned that the levees wouldn’t hold up and his administration still didn’t have adequate preparations for Hurricane Katrina. Fast forward to 2011 and we finally have a more than excellent President who did this:

“In May 2009, the Obama administration conducted a simulation exercise around the possibility of a Category 3 hurricane hitting New York City, White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters Friday. The National Level Exercise, as it is known, was part of a coordinated effort by federal officials to prepare for a variety of disaster scenarios, including one very similar to what is likely to take place this weekend. President Obama himself participated in the exercise, one of the first of its kind by the new administration.”

        http://immasmartypants.blogspot.com/2011/08/obama-administration-had-trained-for.html

This is what effective government looks like under real LEADERSHIP. Thank heavens for President Obama and his excellent hardworking administration.

Stay safe neighbors, what a nasty storm, I can’t believe how big it is.

We’re expected the tail end to hit here Sunday afternoon, eastern Canada.

The emergency services are pretty good, a lot of warnings, they opened shelters, expecting flooding in some areas.

Streets are deserted here – (CT) we went out for one last pastrami sandwhich before all breaks loose. Very weird. Stores are closed, although nothing is technically going on yet. We’ve been getting robocalls with reminders about preparedness. And now we wait…

Thanks, Chips for providing a meeting place for friends (even with disagreements from time to time)

I’m outside of Hartford. Middletown is fairly close. We take the Harley through there often to hang out at the River. Actually I worked there for a couple of years with disabled adults at a facility near Main St. Middletown has become very cosmopolitan – fine dining and patio dining all over the place.

I dare, DARE, DOUBLE-DAMN DARE Gov. Chris “Krispy Kreme” Christie to turn down federal assistance when the inevitable issue of rebuilding the New Jersey beaches comes up. I DARE HIM!!!

Ok, now that I got THAT off my chest… It’s raining very hard in Philadelphia. A few of the places that usually flood when it rains like this have done their usual thing. If it’s going to rain like this all night and into tomorrow, the problem will be where all that water will go. For those of you who don’t know Phila there are three rivers/large creeks that flow within Phila city limits, (similar to, but not as famous as Pittsburgh…) The Delaware River, the Schuylkill river and the Wissahickon Creek. So there are lots of houses that are in very low lying areas. The Schuylkill has East and West River Drives that flood occasionally.

All SEPTA (public transit) is shutting down as of 12:30am tonight (technically Sunday morning) . So, if you don’t drive, you better get your ass wherever you need to be by midnight. Power is holding steady where I am, though there are reports of sporadic outages in Delaware (state)

When I watch this video, I am in awe of what PBO has been able to accomplish,
What part of foreign policy don’t you understand sir? Like getting rid of Al-Queda #1 and #2 leaders? Libya? Egypt?
Or treaty with Russia? Getting our troops out of Irak, and soon out Afghanistan, pre-empting several terrorist attacks here at home, kept us safe since 2008? I can go on.

Listening to him back then, I feel like I am in an alternate universe and that the good Lord was certainly looking down on us and directing this man and us and telling us which way to go. I shudder, even with all the hate, as to what it would be like in this country and this world if we did not have Barack Obama as President. We had to have had help with this and I pray that the same God will look out for us in 2012.

              August 27, 2011 at 11:28 pm

Doris, I must say that while lying here in pain,(yes again, but I am not worried about it, I must find the workable ways and with my faith, trust to use wisdom to calm the pain) I am also crying because of your moving and I feel, true assessment of what happened in the 2008 elections. I truly have faith that that Higher Power, God Almighty was looking down, around, and all inbetween, gathering those gentle, loving, compassionate, and hard working spirits within all of the wonderful young and old people within this nation to assist His powers in choosing Barack Obama as the man to help bring a goodness in change for this nation as well as the world. He had already prepared him, but he just needed some wonderful spirits of likemindness to help him finish across the finish line. And We Did! Yes We Did! And He moved even through all the hate and vile things to still bring it to a reality. Now we still have the hate and ugly and vile people, but He is aware of that: Why would David say in Ps. 37, “Fret not thyself of evildoers, because they will be cut down and withered as the green grass……” I take comfort in that when I go to my quiet space in my music/library where I have my devotions each day. I have to because just like so many of you, I get upset, even angry and very hurt, so I need to read that each day. I have seen how it has worked in my life in the past, and I know it will continue to work for President Barack Obama. so take courage, Doris and all of my TOD family here tonight, we will pray and meditate on the fact that the same God will look upon us with favor again in 2012 to complete the task before us. I am not talking about the type of ;mocking attitudes of God these hypocrites in political parties shamelessly march around talking about, but I am talking about a sweet and humble spirit that is gentle and want to be a sister and brother keeper in a broken world. Faith carries with it love and belief in what is right, good, honest, patience, compassionate, and longsuffering. That is what I speak of when I speak on this blog. And I thank Chipsticks for allowing each of us to honestly respect each other in what their personal spiritual core is. I thank you Chipsticks, but this is just who I am. Doris, thank you for all of the love that you give to us on this site, and I am praying that that Higher Power of God Almighty will keep you and all of my family here who are in the path of this hurricane as safe and calm as possible. Please be safe. I know how you all feel, I was born and lived in them all of my childhood and young adult life. Please keep faith, quiet peace in your hearts and pray humbly. I love you all, and I ask God to be merciful to all of you and to our President and all of his Administration’s families and friends during this time. HZ

Just tried to call both my sons- and no luck, cell phone service seems to be out. they were both prepared and hunkering down, so I won’t worry – much 🙂 Josh – middle son has the news on all the time, so I’m certain he won’t go to work if it’s unsafe.

Don’t worry Tally, Mama Chips is here. Folk wouldn’t do anything to hurt her, we love her too much. Sometimes families have to share how they feel. We ALL love this President so much and we are sometimes passionate, but we’re all adults. We’re fine. Good to see you. Miss you girlfriend.

Tally, I thought about you today, and I said,”Tally has to be at a rehearsal.” So relax, and do not worry. I am very hard in thoughts about our continued respect for Chipsticks on our beautiful site which has become a beautiful haven for all of us. You are right, we must hang together, stay focus on whot is right and still needs to be completed. As Chipsticks asked us yesterday, I hope we will not disrespect her and not be polite and respectful with each other. So many, I am sure do not want this site to be who we are, factual, true to our purpose and our President’s agenda, loving, intelligent, and care about each other’s feelings in a way that is so respectful that others would want to come and be a part of this great family. So we have a lot of work to get done, and we must not fight amongst ourselves, but listen carefully and lovingly and respectfully. I love you all so very much, and I hope that I have not disrespected not one of my dear TOD family members. I love you all back so much,HZ

I am sending one of Tally’s laughs, smiles, and my hug in the mix to all of my family on TOD tonight. Love you, Chipsticks and thank you so much for each day you make this home a beautiful and caring, supportive, and clarity in our mission to support President Obama and not allow the bashing to enter our home. I respect you and your hardwork at all times. Love you back so much,HZ

  18. August 27, 2011 at 9:49 pm

I I have just finished re-reading David Plouffe’s book. Here is the deal : Most blogs, labour some senators and congress critturs including MSM and newspapers did not support him. They were derided by big labour. The young and independants were his base. Al sharpton and Jackson also were proHillary. Al changed his mind when Revend Lowery was proObama when there were in Selma. The two Davids ran a campaign that everybody in the establishment thought it would fail because it encouraged people to own the campaign instead of bribing labour precints to provide boots on the ground.
Whe president Kennedy died, a woman said in 45 years there would be a man of color in the presidency. People thought she was a crackport.

TOD family do not despair about Pres Obama. He will get a second term if we donate and volunteer.
Of note during the primaries when I did not think Obama would win, one of my asian ameican co-workers said Obama would win the nomination because the astrologer’s in China saw O as being a very strong influence on the world stage compared to hillary. Naturally being scientist I did not
believe her until he won Iowa to finally win the Nomination.
I have also finished reading Alters book. FDL and its owner are very influental with congress and senate. Nobody wants to piss her off. Moreover as soon as Obama won, the only people who would get MSM facetime was to bash the president. It is the reason why anybody whose job depends on being in communications is to bash O. All progressive radios excepy for Randy and Stephanie are bashing him and they get sponsers that way. I think it is the reason why Rachel gotta Negative (cenk as well) and it probably could be why she had rather focus on other issues rather than be antiO all the time.
As for Tweety, I have ignored ever since he got Phil Donoghue fired because he was very popular and antiwar.
Sorry for a long rant but I wanted people to remember that all these people did not support O. Rather the voters did. However negativity can bring down morale when it is done day in and out.

Thank you Zulu. I think I will go back and read those books again. I just read A Singular Woman. About Obama’s mother. I think we need to be reminded how we got here. I too believe he will win again. We need him, the US needs him and the world needs him. I am fired up and ready to go.

      • August 28, 2011 at 12:23 am

MTmarilyn, I went back one month ago and re-read David Plouffe’s book: “The Audacity To Win.” It is a must read. Great book. Read page 44 over and over. I hope that you will re-read it MTmarilyn.HZ

Members of The Old Guard have guarded the Tomb every second, of every day regardless of weather or holidays since April 6, 1948.”

        August 28, 2011 at 12:25 am

Agreed, however, I really believe they do they have paid ops who do this. it really is a brilliant way to use the interwebz.

The Koch money is everywhere, and the rabbit hole is deep.

They’re spending billions – including money from all the Health Care cartels – trying to get rid of as many Dems as possible including PBO to overturn and repeal the ACA before it really gets going in 2014. Because once the non-profits come online, it’s over for those big companies, AND THEY KNOW IT.

My day gig is at a small insurance agency, and I see it every day. The Health Care Industry is beyond evil.

        • August 28, 2011 at 8:49 am

A lot of times it’s more homegrown than actual tea party infiltration. And even if it was Rove inspired the truly frightening part is the regulars have a bad habit of swallowing those talking points whole and regurgitating them like they wrote it.

    • 147 LunarSea
      August 27, 2011 at 11:55 pm

That was funny. Isn’t that all the things we usually say? Mostly it’s true but definitely written in snark. The protesters in the comments must be seeing themselves. Or perhaps the writer? either way, attributing it to some grand design by Rove is funny stuff and possibly true. Go figure

    • August 28, 2011 at 1:53 am

Read the comments – it’s very enlightening.

  23. August 27, 2011 at 10:52 pm

I am with you Jacqueline…I read it on the orange site…and by the comments…since they really don’t have an actual link…they all fighting about who actually wrote it…most of them think..It is not from Karl Rowe but from someone of their own….or just a snark.

I read that earlier. Think I saw at the end it said ‘snark.’ Someone check it out for sure though. Stressful day here with all of us watching the storm news. Lucky enough late afternoon to find Direct TV is showing various local stations up and down the coast. We’ve been able to watch WAVY10 and that relieved our daughter a little. Looks like she and the kids will stay here and son-in-law will rent a car, buy a generator here and drive back Monday. Navy guy has to return to work Tuesday.

Scanned the KR email quickly on the DK site, and l looked especially for “snark” but didn’t see it. However, I agree that sometimes teapartiers do get on Democratic sites and write as disgruntled progressives. They love to stir the pot. That is why it is so good to have Chipsticks here to moderate. She senses the scammers and knows their characteristics. Bravo.
OT Huffington Post and Queen Arianna…do you remember that she ran in the Republican primary against Arnold Schwarzenegger and about 10 other Republicans for governor of California. So, she was a registered Republican then. I used to go to HP during the election, but the headlines were so discouraging, I would always go to the Obama blogging site for encouragement. After the election I would go to HP for news, but got tired of it too. I used to enjoy the Style section, but got so tired of their childish “Fashion Faceoffs” between our FLOTUS and whoever came to town. So silly!!! Now, I don’t bother. Their headlines are misleading, and they deal in speculation. For a while I kept mental track of their speculations compared to what actually happened. A VERY low ratio…..now I’m happy…I just don’t go there. Thinking out loud here…..that “Karl Rove” email sounds a lot like the HP.

i have not read all the comments, but the ones I did are excellent. When I watched these clips in the post, I was just amazed and so thankful to God that we elected Barack Obama as our President. Every day that passes, my vote for him becomes more and more validated, beyond my wildest dreams. I so pray and wish that he could proceed without the hate and the resistance from the right. I wonder tonight, after coming home from an evening out (I am lucky; I am nowhere near the hurricane affected areas, except in my heart: I love the East Coast so much and have friends and family all the way up it) that Virginia seems to have been very hard hit; maybe the hardest of any state yet, and therefore, I wonder what our President thinks of Cantor’s latest remarks.

The truth about Kos blogspot -Aug 19, 2007

    http://truth-about-kos.blogspot.com/2007/08/indictment-of-markos-ca-moulitsas-ziga.html

OMG TODers visit this link for everything you ever wanted to know about the DKos founder Markos C. Alberto Moulitsas ZÚÑIGA. I had read his college writings some time ago but was never able to find it again. Those writings coupled with the vitriol of the site is why I stopped going right after the election except for fridays when BWD had her posts up. (and Deaniac et al)

But this is the whole kit and kaboodle from extensive research in 2007. Another spoiled rich kid who hates minorities, gays and apparently telling the truth about who he is. His family business is responsible for the deterioration of a large estuary that has environmentalists rather upset. It’s claimed that they ‘pollute a unique lagoon and threaten endangered species’. He runs from his hispanic heritage but not the wealth his family resort in El Salvadore brings him.

After reading this stuff you’ll better understand why the hateful vile are permitted on his site. Egads.

Jeeze, put this together with greenwald, hamshire & huffington and you have a perfect quad of faux liberalism and progressiveness. Anyway you’ll want to bookmark it. Lots of links to collaborating info that should not be passed up. It’ll take some time to get thru it all. There’s audio also so can’t say it wasn’t him.

    Excerpt quote:

    Child of the Salvadoran Oligarchy:
“Sure, I could always talk against racism, fight ignorance and prejudice wherever I ran into it, yet I would always be looking in from another room and I could always close the door. My life, in my world, in my own detached selfishness. And as I left the ugly reality of racism behind, it struck me that what was such an easy and trivial exercise for me would be impossible for anyone whose skin color or religious persuasion (sic) made them the target of bigotry and discrimination. THEY would never be able to escape who THEY were.” (Emphasis added.)

    • August 28, 2011 at 9:26 am

I think we all can agree that Kos is an arrogant and cynical person with a very odd sense of humor hiding behind the keyboard and therefore a total embarrassment as a guest pundit on cable shows (the few times he’s invited). However, I tend to not buy into conspiracy theories that delve into someone’s past. Many, many people who voted for Reagan voted for Obama. And a right wing background doesn’t mean that they still hold that position. Just because Greenwald, Hamsher, etc are wolves in sheeps clothing, should not indict others who were Republicans. Good Lord, I was brought up in a house with parents who were ACTIVE memebers of the John Birch society! Frank Schaeffer is an example of a person who has switched to the liberal causes and is very comfortable with it. I get the sense that Kos actually doesn’t fully know what he believes -other than he doesn’t like POTUS – he was a John Edwards follower – which is why he’s largely non-existent on his own site now other than commenting on the failed website “upgrade”.
