Justin Elliott (Salon): Here’s an interesting tidbit from Rick Perry’s past to keep an eye on. In the mid-1990s, the presidential candidate owned stock in a video rental store chain whose hardcore porn offerings drew the ire of conservative groups, according to a 2006 report on a liberal Texas blog. That item was resurrected by several liberal web sites this week.
Burnt Orange Report, a site founded by a Democratic activist, reported in 2006 that Perry’s 1995 financial disclosure showed he owned between $5,000 and $10,000 in stock in the company Movie Gallery. He was at the time state commissioner of agriculture.
Why is that significant? Because the now-defunct Movie Gallery, once a competitor to Blockbuster, was known for offering XXX porn rentals along with conventional Hollywood fare….
Ironically, it was the social conservative crusaders at the American Family Association – the very group that helped organize Perry’s stadium prayer rally this month – who spent years on an anti-porn campaign targeting Movie Gallery….
…. Perry’s stock holdings were put in a blind trust in 1996, so what he has owned since that year is not publicly known ….1995 was a long time ago, but never underestimate how intensely social conservatives in places like Iowa abhor porn… it’s not beyond the realm of imagination that it could become a real headache…..

Chips, just a Gremlin update. On my android I cannot get alot the treads to open. It is frustrating. This is the only blog I have problems with and it is my most important one. Usually it is the latest thread. After you open another one I can get into it. There are some I still can’t open on my droid. Now I have no problem on my desktop. The phone people said it wasn’t in my phone. Thanks for looking into it.
Hiya MTmarilyn, so sorry you’re having problems, I’ve noticed a few others are having trouble with their Androids too – I’m guessing it’s yet another WordPress issue, rather than an Android problem. I’ll contact WordPress support and see if they can help me sort it out. Unfortunately I can’t get in touch with the Support guy who was HUGELY helpful recently, when I contacted them a few days ago with a list of problems the guy who replied wasn’t helpful at all. Grr. Sorry again MT, will let you know when I hear back from Support.

Here’s a excellent op-ed from The New York Times last month that explores the contradiction between taking the oath of office to the Constitution and then adding multiple pledges from special interest groups. I hope the Democrats will keep this Grover Noquist no taxes pledge in the spotlight. Average Americans can see the conflict and they don’t like it. Signing Away the Right to Govern
It used to be that a sworn oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution was the only promise required to become president. But that no longer seems to be enough for a growing number of Republican interest groups, who are demanding that presidential candidates sign pledges shackling them to the corners of conservative ideology. Many candidates are going along, and each pledge they sign undermines the basic principle of democratic government built on compromise and negotiation.

I’ve been on this page since day one, have written to all my Congress people, the DOJ and the WH. This is needs to be addressed. The only valid pledge is their sworn oath taken upon entry into elected office to uphold the Constitution serving and protecting the people it serves.
Please write/e-mail/twitter/fax regarding this issue. Grover Norquist is not an elected official….and as Alan Simpson suggested on LOD’s The LAst Word, he should be investigated, and his money trail and support lines revealed.

Eh.. Perry will just say he found God.. or some such BS … just like Gingrich has done regarding his cheating/multiple marriages. These folks have values as conveniences only- Bachmann, Perry, Gingrich.. all of them are pushing their ‘morals’ on to the country- but none of them ever live what they preach.. it is the story of Republicans-hypocrisy is their only code.
And yet it is the truly ‘family values’ guy- the one who never preaches it.. President Obama- that is attacked and undermined at every turn .. while the media pushes these sick/dysfunctional ‘leaders’ onto America.
But God should not be an acceptable excuse for ignorance. God gave us brains so that we could use them, and hearts that we wouldn’t become unfeeling, uncaring machines.
Whenever you peel back the very superficial layer of holier than thou conservatives you see ugly hypocritical underlayers. Nothing against porn; pretty much everyone at one point in their life has watched porn and still watches porn. It’s all good. The only problem with conservatives is that they rail against such “immoral” leanings. They rail against gay people; then you find out that they’re secretly gay. They rail against prostitution; then you find out that they get their rocks off with prostitutes. They rail against sex education and preach abstinence only; then you find out their children are mini whores. They rail against people with no military background; then you find out their military records are forged. They rail against big government take over and demand their country back; then you find out they know nothing about history or how government works. They rail against illegal immigrants; then you find out that they are the huge exploiters of poor immigrants. They rail against lack of sanctity of marriage; then you find out that they are the greatest violators of the marriage vow. Hypocrisy, thy name is GOP.

Unfortunately, methinks they don’t hate porn as much as they hate Obama. NOTHING keeps these people from the polls. It hasn’t made a damned bit of difference in TX.
I hope this has some legs but I doubt it: unless he continued to own stock, unless he knew what the company did it’s going to be a non-starter. Like mutual funds — does everybody know what their mutual funds are invested in? They tried this on Barbara Boxer a few years ago.

You know, I’m going to answer my own question: for awhile we had a mutual fund, pushed on us when the market was happy by a stockbroker friend of my husband. When things began to tank I said to my husband, “I’m owning a part of Halliburton and I’m LOSING money?” I couldn’t stand the market. It makes absolutely no sense. After the IPO, nothing goes to the company and you’re just gambling with fake money. I got out of the market I didn’t know or trust. If I’m going to do that kind of investing I want a mutual fund that invests in socially and environmentally conscious companies. Because of the kind of business my husband and I are in, I’m better off investing in our own extremely small, small business than playing roulette on the stock market.
I have a family member that suffered severe losses playing with the giant casino that is Wall Street. Sadly he lost most of what he had worked hard for over 25 years running a small business with another brother.

Love the pictures of POTUS and the girls! These are the first pictures of the girls in several years. I think they hae been having a nice private summer! Good for them.
This article on Perry and porn just made me laugh. We travel from OKC to Dallas at least 6 times a year to see our children and grandchildren. Traveling down I-35, the first thing to be seen after crossing the Texas line is DW Adult Video Store. We laugh every time. One reason is because my husband’s initials are DW, but also because Texas claims to be so religious, and the greeting to the state is an adult video store. Texans have a stomach for contradictions and hypocrisy that is very big! Maybe others do too…..but everything, as they say, is bigger in Texas.
